Customer Reviews:
Ideal for personal use.......2007-05-15
I bought this for personal use at home, so I'm reviewing this with that in mind.
Plus points
(a) It's NAS! Which means, all you need to do is connect this to your wireless router at home and you are done. On Windows, you'll instantly have a network share to dump your files against. Can't tell you how cool that is.
(b) Absolutely simple to set up.
(c) Web based configuration is also easy and simple. If all you care for is a huge dump of your data, you don't even need to tweak it much.
(d) Compared to other NAS devices in this range, it's big plus point is that it does HTTP and FTP. This means that if you open up the right ports on your router, you can access all that data over HTTP/FTP from any browser. I use it all the time to listen to my music at work (it is authenticated, though not encrypted).
(e) You can set up multiple shares with multiple users in the latest boxes, in case you have roommates and want to restrict access.
Negatives
(a) The transfer speed is considerably lesser than an attached USB drive, which is expected (seems to reach a max of like 4 Mbps on my 802.11b network). It is more than good enough for playing back movies and audio, though, so it's only a pain if you are doing lots of multiple transfers.
(b) It's FAT32, so you can't store files larger than 4 GB by default, but for most normal users, that shouldn't be an issue.
(c) Doesn't seem to turn itself off or use low power on idle. Wonder how long the disk will last.
(d) There is some latency to transfers over wireless. So if you are clicking on a video file to play it, it'll take some time for the player to start playing. Again, not significant enough to be a PITA.
Didn't work out for me .........2007-03-29
I got one of these through Newegg a couple months ago, and it setup and worked really well, for about 2 days. After 2 days, cycling the power would sometimes result in it not booting prtoperly, and not being available as a network attached device. Soon after this behavior started, it just powered itself down, and wouldn't power up again. So I left it to "cool off" for awhile, and hey presto, it fired up again.
Problem was, all the data I had so dilligently copied to it, had gone. Infact the drive had to be reformatted. So, I started again, and that same day, again, it powered itself down, but this time started making horrible clicking noises. This time, it was well and truly dead.
Maybe I was unlucky, but I didn't do anything out of the ordinary to this piece of hardware. I'm not a novice computer user either, so I don't think it was user error.
It just seemed quite fragile to me, with intermittent problems when the drive booted. It never felt robust, and ultimately, that was proven to me.
Solid and Simple.......2007-03-16
I hesitated for a long time before buying a NAS drive. After various research I decided to try this one. The price point seemed worth the risk as in the worst case scenario I could use as another external drive.
My initial testing and use have been very pleasurable. I will use it for storing mostly digital pictures from high school sporting events or other family activities as well as music and it seems to work just fine. I have two wireless access points. The 11G works faster of course than the 11B but it too is fine. The inital setup was very easy. Plugged in and then from two different laptops running Windows Media Center 2005, I mapped the drive using file explorer. It took 5 minutes total from the plug-in near my router in the basement to copying files to it from upstairs.
I still need to figure out how to change the default passwords but assume this is on the user manual pdf. I did not have to install the software that came with it to use.
I think this is worth your consideration.
Very Disappointed.......2007-03-14
I hate to rain on anyone's parade but I just received my LaCie 250GB drive today.... I was excited to receive it but extremely disappointed when I started reading the manual and saw that you can only format this drive in FAT32 format. The main problem with FAT32 is that files are limited to 4GB in size. If you format the drive to anything else, it becomes a read-only drive. This is a huge problem for me, I wanted this drive to store video files between multiple machines on my network. My video files are routinely larger than 4GB so unfortunately I have to box it back up and ship it back. What a waste of time, I wish they stated this extremely important restriction online where people could see it. Now I know why this drive is priced so cheap.
Invisible file proble.......2007-03-09
This disk is OK except for one big thing, and I'm not the only user who has had this happen: if I drag a file from my Mac to the disk it appears OK in the disk's finder window. However, if I save a file from within it's application, the file does not appear in the disk's finder window. The file is there, and can be opened by it's host application using the 'open' dialogue box, but it cannot be seen in the finder, now overwritten by dragging an identically named file from my Mac to the disk. Big problem.

DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE........2006-06-10
Please do not make the same mistake I did. Drive crashed after just six months and we LOST ALL OF THE DATA IN IT. Go with well-established brands like Seagate, Maxtor, or WD.
Somewhat of a disappointment.......2006-03-26
I have 3 LaCie drives, no problems with any. However the limitations pointed out in the comments apply, and I did not know beforehand that formatting was fixed to FAT32.
My main disappointment however is, in the ethernet mode I am using it in (i.e. not locally connected), it is much slower than I expected. It has its own little computer inside running Linux, and it is not as fast (file-sharing) as it should be.
Read customer reviews before you buy.......2006-03-03
If you think you're gonna hook this guy to your network, map it and you're done... oooh boy what a dissapointment!
This is merely a glorified USB hard disk (it looks good though). It's FAT32 preformatted, so any files larger than 4GB (such as my AVI and MPEG files) mean trouble. Add to that file naming and file sharing and much more...
At such a price, do yourself and your wallet a favor and don't bother.
need Windows XP Professional for this drive.......2006-03-02
Great drive, but you need to have XP Pro in order to use it. You need to turn off Windows Simple File Sharing which can ONLY be done with XP Pro.
Note that I called LaCie tech support and they were amazing and tried to help me the best they could. They even found out a work around to solve this issue but no satifacti=ory for most people.
I agree--caveat emptor.......2006-02-01
The NAS concept is nice but tricky. You cannot pop this bad boy on ethernet and expect it to work like all your other hard drives, which is more or less how they sell it. It comes preformatted FAT32, which limits your file size to 4GB and has no security features, which works as long as you don't use backup software & hope to use it over your network. In this situation, as mine, where your backups are dumped into a single conglomerated file reaching several GB, your only option is a drive connected directly to a machine running an OS, like a server or peer-peer network connection. Sure, you can connect this drive via USB, but why spend the extra $ on an ethernet connection, processor, & web interface? A $69 plain vanilla external hard drive will be all you need and can use unless you're willing to put up with the signficant restrictions of NAS. I didn't know that before I plunked down my $200; hopefully you will.

That's right. This is the only router/4pt switch in it's class that has a 10/100 WAN port. Netgear, Linksys, Belkin, etc. are all 10baseT WAN. The NAT for port forwarding for an FTP site actually works! Haven't tried it too much with anything else. For games that use a LOT of ports like Mechwarrior 4, you need to jump into the DMZ. But I know Netgear and Linksys users that have to put their FTP servers in the DMZ. Down side is that only 16 TCP or UDP ports can be forwarded, where I think Netgear's funny looking new silver one (what was so wrong with square blue metal? You could set that on it's edge WITHOUT the silly stand) does 20, but NONE of them allow you to enter, say, a range of 100 ports for subsequent connections in games. For that I guess you need a REAL router like a Cisco and a lot more money. The best part is the price. With Super Saver shipping to Hawaii, I got WAY over on the usual "Pony Express" charge-by-weight price gouging, as well as the local merchant price gouging,(as if they really pay individual shipping rates on bulk products)if they even carry a selection. This router is cheaper than the competitors and better in most areas, although ALL these companies could still do a better job with NAT reliability, command line interfaces and port range capability. The CPU is an ARM 7 125Mhz with an 8MB Cache. You won't find these specs anywhere, though. I had to dig. Why are these companies so tight-lipped about # of ports you can forward and proc/cache specs? Well, cuz they want to sell volume and most folks don't even know what this stuff means. None of the companies are interested in establishing any standard of baseline comparison, because they'd rather market by taking up space on the store shelf like beer companies do. This little router does have nice bright green LED's on the front for each speed, which makes monitoring traffic easy. Small, light and stackable with OTHER rectangular components besides Hawking products, unlike Linksys and (newest)Netgear. This black router just looks more professional to me than a lot of the other funky-colored home-user market niche types. Don't know too much about it's electrical durability yet, but after all the Linksys products (hubs, mostly) that I've seen get fried by power spikes, I steered clear. Bottom line is that this router is yet another sleeper computer/networking product that most folks in the market for a router will overlook.

and just stay away from it. JVCs are great if you don't need any accessories or never need customer service. if you do you are in trouble. I bought a JVC video recorder last year and despite it being new it came without most of the accessories offered with it--things you'll probably need such as the cable to connect it to the TV and the one to connect it to the computer. I had to buy each of these for $40 each--they would not ship them, and also had to buy the software that was supposed to come with the camera. after all that, the leads broke, then the zoom button would stick, and finally the camera started eating tape. the customer service was useless and I finally just threw it out. I had owned this JVC product for less than a year and will never buy another one.
Great Camcorder !!!!!!!!!.......2004-09-04

The average American spends four hours a day watching television. Why stare at a box on a shelf when you could bask in the glow of a multiple aspect ratio projection screen. Meet the Horizon Electrol available in both tensioned and non-tensioned versions for a viewing experience second to none. The Horizon was engineered with the serious home theater enthusiast in mind - a home theater that alternates between a standard video broadcast followed by a movie in Cinemascope format and everything in between. Enjoy your DVD in the format the directors filmed them in, video, HDTV, Letterbox or Cinemascope. Ceiling recessed with patented motor-in-the roller technology, optional low voltage control to connect to third party control as well as an optional network ready capability and masking that "steps back" to prevent shadowing make this the screen unbeatable. When you're finished, hit the button and the screen is out of the way and safely in the case. Before you spend the money on a flat screen, keep this in mind - our smallest screen dwarfs the largest flat screen, and our projection surfaces make flat panel televisions look downright chunky.
