The Sangean WR2 brings distant AM and FM stations to your door step through Sangean's advanced RF/IF electronic circuitry. The wood enclosure is acoustically balanced and the enhanced frequency response, front firing speaker provides rich, room filling sound. The acoustic bass compensation and 7 watt amplifier give this small radio a truly big sound. (Stereo FM is fed to the earphone jack). Advanced features include: large backlit LCD display, clock with alarm (radio or buzzer), bass compensation, auxiliary input jack, stereo headphone jack, 10 memory presets, F type antenna jack and RDS. Preset and clock values are automatically saved up to 30 minutes during power interruptions. Additionally, the WR2 comes with a full-featured infra-red remote control!

The WR2 has some very advanced features. The Radio Data System (RDS) displays short text messages on applicable FM stations. The upcoming Enhanced Other Network (EON) is also supported providing traffic information in some areas. The auto-clock-set function will derive the current time from the RDS signal of your local FM station (if you have RDS in your area). The clock may be set for 12 or 24 hour format. When rotating the volume control, the volume level (1-60) will be displayed. If you tape the the volume control once it becomes a full range Treble Control. Two taps converts it to a full range Bass Control. The tuning steps may be set to 9 or 10 kHz on the AM band and 50 or 100 kHz on the FM band. The radio will continue to run 6 minutes during a power failure and preset information will retained for about one hour. The back lighting may be set at 3 different levels of brightness, or turned off. Any discussion of the WR-2 begins with its black wooden housing, which is rich in both appearance and tone. The cabinet's front surface features the speaker on the left side, a series of intuitively placed control buttons toward the bottom, and a generously sized LCD display in the middle with three brightness levels. More importantly, the cabinet teams with the 7-watt amplifier and the acoustic bass compensation system to add warmth and depth to the audio. Complementing the housing is Sangean's advanced RF/IF electronic circuitry, which picks up distant AM and FM stations and reproduces them with unmatched clarity, making music and even talk programs come alive.

Even though the WR-2 is advertised as an AM/FM radio, it offers much more than a standard digital tuner, including a Radio Data System (RDS) that displays short text messages on applicable FM stations, along with support for the Enhanced Other Network (EON) and its traffic information (available in certain regions). And unlike most tabletop radios, the WR-2 lets listeners adjust the treble and bass levels via the variable volume control. In its default mode, the rotary volume knob displays the volume level from 1 to 60. Tap it once, however, and it turns into a full-range treble control, and two taps creates a full-range bass control. Additional features include a clock with an alarm (radio or buzzer), an auxiliary input jack for connecting such devices as an iPod or MP3 player (both of which sound great through the speaker), a recording output jack, 10 memory presets that help you quickly find your favorite stations, and a full-featured infrared remote control.

A final bonus stems from the power backup function, which plays the radio for six minutes during a power failure (great for emergencies) and retains the memory preset and clock values for about an hour. The WR-2 measures roughly 9.5 by 4.5 by 6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 pounds.

Everything's great but the ergonomics.......2007-09-14

This is a very solidly engineered unit. It performs well, looks good, and exudes quality. The controls aren't the most intuitive, though; the display, while attractive, could be more informative; and the operation manual could be user-friendlier. Still, the sound quality is good and the reception is beyond reproach. I'm very happy with the unit. Plus, it comes with a low-profile but comprehensive remote.

If I only lived in Europe.......2007-09-05

I must admit, it's a nice looking radio. However, I have no idea how it sounds since mine arrived with a European power cord and I live in the US. It's heading back to Amazon and hopefully the replacement arrives with the proper power cord.

Totally pleased .......2007-08-20

I couldn't have asked for a better table radio. It is a marvel, really. From the substantial feel to the piano black wood finish to its make-no-compromises internals. The sound is perfectly balanced, the display is outstanding, the reception is stellar, and the other features are a bonus and plentiful. I recently looked at the competition at a bricks and mortar store and I am pleased to know that I indeed made the absolute right choice with this one. It may cost a bit more than the others, but every cent over is money well spent.

2nd best radio every had..........2007-08-10

This is the second best alarm/radio combo I have ever used in my life. The first was my brother's old timex which was amazing in many ways.

As far as my Black WR-2 which I own 3:

Positives:

1) Great sound. Warmth and bass without sounding like a rapper's boom box. Won't name names but there are $150+ radios out there that have 100x the bass and nothing else.

2) Great reception. Clear reception all the way around even with just built-in hidden antenna.

3) Love the rotary knobs for tuning and volume.

Cons:

1) Display is too weak and not clear in direct sunlight. Should have a light sensor and increase brightness in day time. Display overall doesn't have enough contrast.

2) Snooze and other buttoms a little too small.

3) It would be nice if this was like $100 and not $140.

worth the $$.......2007-08-08

i've only listened to this for 2 days, but i was impressed right out of the box. the finish on the radio is top notch. it feels heavy and solid, which generally translates into better sound quality. while it can't compete with a quality full size hifi or multi speaker unit, the sound quality is the best i've heard in a single speaker unit of this size. i would certainly recommend it over a single speaker unit from tivoli, the obvious competition. what got me to buy it in the first place (i was having a tough time deciding between models from tivoli, teac and other sangeans) was the fact that music hall's table radio is this radio. music hall is an electronic component maker and distributor of audiophile quality. their rdr-(radio done right)1 is the wr-2 with their name on it for $200. there is some conjecture as to whether they might have tweaked some of the electronics, but i don't know. at any rate, my wife and i are very happy and impressed with the wr-2 and feel it is good value as well.
