The DV-SR45U is an integrated DVD recorder and DVD player that lets you make simple, one-touch video recordings onto durable, rewriteable DVDs for collecting, sharing, time-shifted viewing, and video archiving of your VHS tapes and camcorder footage. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DV-SR45U sports one set of progressive-scan component-video outputs and 1 each composite- and S-video outs for use with SD (standard-definition) TVs as well as with VCRs or DVRs.

Inputs consist of 2 each composite- and S-video, with 2 sets of stereo analog (left/right) RCA audio inputs. One set of AV/S inputs is conveniently located on the unit's front panel for ready connection to a camcorder or other device. An RF audio/video input accepts a feed from an older VCR or cable box, or an antenna, while a single RF output passes an NTSC tuner signal to another component.

In the audio department, this unit--like many other DVD recorders--compresses all incoming audio signals with Dolby Digital 2.0, which conserves space but slightly compromises audio quality. A set of left/right RCA analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

The DV-SR45U simplifies the process of searching for a specific moment on a disc through its high-speed-access thumbnail views and Quick Search functions. In addition, this DVD recorder also features a Block Noise filter that decreases overall noise in the playback picture.

The DV-SR45U is CPRM-compliant. CPRM stands for stands for Content Protection for Recordable Media, a copy-protection system triggered by specific CPRM programs. You can record copy-once broadcast programs, but you cannot then make a copy of those recordings. CPRM recordings can only be made on DVD-RW discs formatted in VR mode, and CPRM recordings can only be played on players that are specifically compatible with CPRM.

Absoulute garbage. I should have know better that to go Sharp so it serves me right that this DVD "recorder" only succesfully records half of the time and the other half it steals your money for the blank DVDs you buy.

I've had this thing for a year and a half and it's been nothing but trouble. There is no indication on the packaging that only 4X DVDs are required. After you search and search and finally find 4X DVDs(I had to get mine online) this thing turns half of them into coasters. No matter what brand DVD-R you use, it will only work half the time and you won;t know until after you think you've finished the recording.

And if it's after 90 days, forget it. Sharp charges you to send it to them, for a diagnostics, and estimate and repair.

The worst thing I ever bought in my entire life.

Great value and easy to use.......2005-11-11

I just bought two. These machines replaced an old, very poor Phillips DVD recorder and all the VHS machines. Picture is great. I found it easy to use and had no problems with 1x, 2x, and 4x DVD-R's and 1x-2x DVD-RW's and they played fine in other DVD players. I don't know where the other reviewers shop, but I had little trouble finding both DVD-R's and DVD-RW's for this machine online AND at Office Depot, CompUSA, Staples, Best Buy and even Big Lots, and all at reasonable prices (CompUSA having the best selection and prices). It also played a variety of DVD+R's, DVD-R's, DVD-RW's, and regular DVD's. It did play a DVD+R/DL, but only one with just the movie and no menus (store bought DVD's played just fine). Tuner and timer recording work great and menus are easy to navigate. Like most Sharp products, the remote is ergonomic and easy to use.

Sure, DVD's and formatting takes quite a while and reading takes a few seconds, but nothing longer than my expensive Pioneer Elite DV-37. And it is a change from VHS, but this is not a lifetime product. I do think it is a big improvement over past DVD products.

Good recorder for disappearing media........2005-09-10

This is a very good recorder with strong editing capabilities. Both the DVD-R & RW format disks offer track-editing options suitable for basic or more event-specific recordings from several sources. Recording from VHS often rewards you with a quality that in fact appears better than the original.

It has a quirk regarding the cooling fan which is easy to circumvent. What you can not work around however is its inability to function outside of 4X media. Though you may have an easier time with 2X or 1X, the proper media is DVD-R 4X (MAX) 4.7GB for this machine. You will not find this information easy to come by otherwise. Such 4X disks appear close to extinction, as they have often been replaced in catalogs and on shelves by 1x-8x disks -- DO NOT BUY THESE -- which are not compatible with this machine. There are no firmware upgrades available for this model.

If you have a stack of 4X max. disks on hand or know a source that can provide you with such media, then you will be quite satisfied. Without a firmware upgrade however, this recorder will soon suffer a fate not unlike death.

Using a DVD-RW (Not DVD+RW) ver1.1/ 2x speed it works great and is re-recordable and simple. Haven't found a DVD-R that works with it yet (it tells you in the manual which ones will work but I just couldn't find the DVD-R of the correct write speed in stores). Recording works instantly (like a VCR) but takes between 20secs to a minute after recording is stopped to write to disc.

Don't waste your money.......2007-08-20

We've had this phone for a year and a half or so, and can't wait to replace it. Cordless phone seems to work ok, but the corded handset on the base unit is worthless. The speaker on the handset earpiece is very hard to hear and gets a lot of feedback (?) from the mic. The only way we can hear the person on the other end of the line is to put our finger over the mic when we're not talking, which is very inconvenient. Also, the volume on the answering machine is horrible, even when at it's maximum setting. I'm ready to toss this unit in the garbage.

Excellent sound quality with headset.......2007-04-29

I've owned this model for 2 or 3 years. I work at home and need a cordless handset with a headset so I can walk around "hands free" or work on the computer while I talk. This phone has excellent sound quality with the headset. Plenty of volume and clarity, which is important to me because I have partial hearing loss. Before I bought this model, I bought and returned a higher-rated model because the sound quality on the headset was so poor.

I recently developed the "sticky button" problem on the handset as described by others here. This was so annoying I decided to replace the unit with a nice, highly-rated GE 5.8 GHz unit with two handsets. The sound quality over the headset was terrible. Switching to another brand of headset made no difference so I returned the unit and set up the old one again.

Another reviewer here said it was "easy" to take apart the handset and clean the number pad and circuit board. Don't believe him, it ain't easy. I tried. After removing six tiny screws, I couldn't get the circuit board to come apart, but I could lift it up enough to create enough space to blow air on the number pad and board. That seems to have helped somewhat.

In summary, if using a headset is important to you, this model can't be beat. If the "sticky button" problem comes back, I'll definitely buy the same model again.

Not a great buy.......2007-04-14

The corded phone works fine but we have had nothing but trouble with the cordless handset. The battery dies constantly and won't hold a charge. And as other reviewers have mentioned, the numbers on the keypad stick so that that number dials two to three times. Forget making a long distance call. Definitely do not recommend, I am only giving it 2 stars because the corded phone and answering machine work fine.

Bought this 2 phone system for my service center and it has serviced me well for 3 years now. Would recommend it to anyone needing so many features in a small package.

Don't buy it!.......2006-06-14

It was working ok but just after the 1 year warranty expired, some of the buttons from the wireless handset stopped working or if pressed the number were entered twice.

Called customer service and was told that if not under warranty, it cannot be fixed, so basically you have to throw your phone to the trash.

You would be better off buying other brand.

Our family is disappointed with this Companion.

We own two earlier versions of Franklin Electronic Scrabble Dictionaries, purchased approx 1991 & 2002. Each has been a tiny treasure; well used at home, while traveling & especially at the beach! Purchased this because we wanted to update.

CONS .....
1. Too large, not easily carried with our Travel Scrabble.
2. Uses heavier, shorter lasting & more expensive batteries.
3. MOST DISAPPOINTING, does not have the UPDATED special little words that make great Scrabble crosswords & scores. It is even missing some that are in our older units!
Having the newest legal Scrabble words is the exact reason we purchased it, so phooey to this gadget!

PROS .....
You may like it if you have not already used the first generations of the Scrabble Companion. It is easy to read if you need larger buttons or print. Could be useful for teaching children or beginners. Has some games. Colorful.

CONCLUSION .....
We will use our new Official Scrabble Dictionary in book form when at home. Not as much fun, but IT has the most up-to-date & challenging words. When traveling or at the beach, will use our old Companion while complaining we could have higher scores, if only....... ;-D

I have wanted this dictionary for 3 years but could not afford the 50.00 price Franklin put on it. I am on social security and have limited funds. So when I saw your offer of 30.00 off - I couldn't resist it - so I bought it for my birthday (june 23) and love it very much. I do a lot of things with it and couldn't be without it. Thank you very much.

Great product, but an old edition........2007-06-27

I love my Scrabble dictionary. It is very compact and a lot easier to bring along on vacation than the paperback dictionary. It has some skill-building games on it and can even be used to find words for the letters you have--a feature I use when playing against the computer in order to increase my skill. The drawback of this dictionary, however, is that it only contains the words from the 3rd edition of the official dictionary. The fourth edition has been out for some time now, but this product has not been updated. Otherwise, I would give it five stars.
