Terrific Little Speaker with Clear, Strong Sound.......2007-09-07

After reading several dozen consumer reviews describing laptop speakers I puchased this one. You simply plug it into your laptop, or USB hub, swivel the gooseneck to position the speaker where you want, and you've got an excellent speaker that fits in a small laptop utility bag.

The only complaint I have is that there is no quick volume control; once you've plugged it into your USB port, it overrides the laptop's volume control "knob". You have to open the volume icon in your Control Panel every time you want to adjust the speaker volume, which can be too slow when you're being blasted by a loud video.

This is not to say that there is anything wrong with the volume modulation in the speaker itself, just that there seems to be a wide volume range across items I view--YouTube, email messages with videos from friends, etc.

If this speaker had a volume control knob it would be perfect!

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR DELL LAPTOPS.......2007-09-02

After several weeks of light, mid-volume use, the speaker stopped working on my Dell Latitude D500 and I began receiving error messages noting a "device malfunction". After trading emails with J-Lab customer service, I was instructed to return the speaker by mail (at my expense) for a refund. The refund I received was 80% of the original purchase price because, according to J-Lab, the device was still "working" upon receipt. The representative handling the return acknowledged that there has, in fact, been a history of compatibility issues with Dell laptops-- in other words, a "working" speaker may not always operate correctly when connected to a Dell laptop. Is trying this speaker on your Dell worth the risk of paying two sets of shipping charges, losing 20% of the purchase price, and spending time emailing representatives and repacking/mailing the device? If not, maybe it's worth considering alternatives.

Are we listening to the same speakers?.......2007-08-08

We bought this speaker for our Gateway M505 Media Laptop on a recent trip. The M505 has reasonable speakers for a laptop, but their volume level isn't quite strong enough for us to be happy--we'd always find ourselves straining to hear dialogue from movies.

From reading the reviews I honestly thought this would solve our problem in a nifty self-contained USB-powered fashion.

For us it didn't.

We found the speakers to be nearly identical to the M505 speakers, and while the B-Flex did give us the tiniest improvement in volume, it wasn't enough to really give us adequate volume, or the "big sound" many reviewers have mentioned. Also, there is no way a speaker the size of these can give the kind of frequency response any level of audiophile would be happy with.

So, who should try out this speaker? If you have standard tinny sounding laptop speakers (the almost nonexistent kind), these will be a big improvement. Also you will like the fact that it is USB powered so no batteries, no cords are needed.

However, having said that, I really think the bottom line is, to get truly better sound, you need to use a powered speaker. I think some of the JBL's may be the way to go.

For cost of these guys, unless you catch them on sale, my advice is to keep looking. We had to return ours. (Thanks to Amazon a really fair & generous return policy).

My boyfriend bought me this speaker. It is plug-and-play. On my computer, often movies are not loud enough for some reason and with this speaker it's as loud as we could possibly want. Also I can blast my music throughout the house from my laptop - before I could not because it sounded horrible at high volumes.

I'm not much of a sound expert, but I think it sounds pretty good.

Unless your laptop's soundcard is not working, or your speakers are barely hearable I wouldn't recommend this. Odds are your laptop does as much as these speakers.

I really thought the reviews for this item were probably a little over-blown, but the speakers have proven me wrong. As someone who primarily uses their laptop on the go, I have been looking for a set of small, easily transportable, decent sounding speakers. These fit into all three categories. I am pleasantly surprised by the fullness of the sound that they put out. If you're strictly an audiophile, you'd be better off investing in a good set of Bose headphones, but if you need something to quickly and efficeintly plug and play so other people can hear what is on your laptop, then you won't find a better buy for your money.

Ahhh--peace!.......2003-02-18

The apartment above mine is leased by a music school to house music students. My apartment is also adjacent to the Jacuzzi. I attached the Jensen JW-120 wireless system to my TV and replaced the earbuds with Sony MDR-EX70LP earbuds. The JW-120 pictured does not look like mine--and mine is a JW-120. The JW-120 that I have works just as advertised. When the Sony earbuds are inserted quite snugly, they work as well as earplugs to block out extraneous noise.

Can't Live Without It, Best Clarity for a headset vs others.......2004-07-09

I had tried many headsets that were purchased separately to plug into my cordless phone and they all sucked in one way or the other (weak clarity, fuzziness, broken connections, etc). Finally I decided that the answer was to find a phone where the headset and phone were just one piece and that would solve the problem. It did with the GE headset phone. Very clear, no problems. While others have complained that the headset part breaks I haven't had that problem after a year. But I simply assume that all phones these days are just cheaply made in foreign countries, period. So, I've purchased a second GE phone as a back up when the first one breaks, which I just assume that it will. There's little real quality in the phones today so we should all just get used to it and then won't be so upset when they break. I can't live without the GE headset phone.

Takes a Lickin..........2003-04-09

I have been using this phone almost daily for over two years now. If I had a dollar for every time I dropped it or knocked it off my desk I would own a retirement home in Palm Springs. This phone has never failed me despite the abuse it has been subject to. only now are the batteries beginning to die. I am looking to now replace and took some time to review other models currently available, however did not see any that came with an additional battery. The phone is extremely comfortable to wear, and I have never had any problems with the headset being fixed to the phone. This has actually been a benefit as I have caught the phone many times by the cord, saving a collision with the floor. Why Pay More for Less? Buy It, You'll like It.

THIS PHONE NEEDS WORK!.......2002-06-24

For this style phone I have to say that I have gone through 4 of them.. Thank god for warranities.. In under 2 years.. The major problem with them is with normal wear and tear the plastic headset gives easly and breaks... Same place on all phones and all break in under 6 months.. When asked if there was a recall Londondrugs simply said no it was to expensive.. and just replaced the phone.

Great phone....actually have had this specific model for 5years and also have same model with built in Call waiting/caller ID (which has way better features)...
sound quality and reception distance from phone is EXCELLENT; however;
plastic headsets on both of my phones have "cracked" (and are now taped together) right at the slide adjustment...they just cracked from use within first 6months of use on both...
Need to currently buy another new unit with the caller ID feature and acn't seem to find them anywhere...

It is a really good DVD player but...........2004-10-21

I bought it for the MPEG-1/MPEG-4 on SD CF card capability. It does not do this. Amazon should not say it does. I will be contacting them about this. It plays .asf type MPEG-4 NOT MPEG-1 unless it's a CD ROM or DVD Video (VCD/SVCD). It also says it cannot play memory cards greater than 128Mb (or 256Mb CF SD cards), but it has. Although the actual file it played was very small-It was on a 512Mb CF card. Also it was "initialized" (formatted) on a PC (WIN ME) The manual says that won't work but it did. Probably great if you are using it for a Digital Video Camera, but not recording from a TV tuner card onto memory card. Kind of wide, may not fit into some entertainment systems. (stands) Very light though. Owned for a few hours, paid ninety-nine bucks for it. (half off) Will keep, no others play MPEG-1 anyway. Hope this helps someone. :)

Does the job reliably.......2004-09-27

I got one of these back in mid-2000. It's been quite reliable. I actually got it used, because I had a defective drive from another outfit (Iomega). I then tested someone else's drive (the one I have now) on my Mac with Toast 4, which worked. I went out and bought an 8230e, the kind available at the time. It didn't work, so I traded with the friend for his drive.

It's worked reliably, and rarely produces a bad disk. Even though it doesn't advertise so, it works with Toast for Mac. It doesn't include any Mac software. I wouldn't have bought it afterwards because it's not particularly fast and the computer I bought at the New Year of 2001 had FireWire. But it's served me well over the past few years, and will be subject to less use when the new iMac comes.

Background: I have burned lots of CDs but never had my own burner. I bought this drive for its USB connectivity (one drive I'll use on many PCs).

I expected installation to be a pain (on every PC). I expected it would be hard to use for making copies. I COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG!

It took me longer to unpack the box than it did to install the drive. Total time for both: 10 minutes. Instructions: insert USB cable, one floppy in drive...2 minutes later: ready to go. Awesome!

Once installed, software is a BREEZE. Start yourself off by inserting a blank disk and you never have to look for the software in your start/programs/etc.. It AUTOMATICALLY pops up with the right window -- if the CD is blank, it asks: What do you want to do? An Easy Menu then takes you right to the program you need.

Insert a blank CD-RW and it will format it in the background; insert one that is already formatted and it doesn't annoy you with any windows/menus -- just go right ahead and use it.

It passed my wife's skepticism with a new record: no complaints, nothing but "wows". She inserted a blank CD-R, one click on the menu to the right software, inserted a disc to copy. Bingo, started copying. 10 min later, she's got a copy and no fuss.

The combination of CD-R and USB isn't the speediest and I've coasterized a couple of discs, but I'd trade coasters for the ease-of-use that this drive provides -- in a heartbeat.

If anyone from HP is reading this, congrats gang, because this really isn't like an HP product of yesteryear -- it is simple to use and fun right out of the box. Keep making products like this -- Please!

Although I don't use Hoya filters myself on my Leica and Rollei cameras, I have friends that use them and are quite happy with them, and I've used them on their cameras, too. They're good quality and at a reasonable price, which is more than I can say for the Leica and Rollei filters. So I thought I'd put in a plug for Hoya here even if I don't own any myself. Actually, I recently was given a Canon EOS Rebel for my birthday, which will make a perfectly decent knockabout, everyday camera when I don't want to carry my more expensive ones, and I'll probably get a few Hoya filters for it.

A polarizing filter is great for reducing unwanted glare from reflections, and will even help to enhance color and produce more saturated colors as a result. Remember that the filter's greatest effect is proportional to the sine of the angle with respect to the sun, which means that at 90 degrees the effect is greatest, and at 180 degrees, the least. This is no problem when using an SLR since it's all through the lens metering. But if you're a rangefinder user like me, you'll need to take this into consideration when correcting for your exposure. You can do this by using a spotmeter set to the exposure settings on your camera and then taking a reading with and without the polarizing filter in front of the spotmeter, subtracting the two, and then dialing in that correction on your camera. It's not 100% accurate but it's pretty darn close. This will enable you to get the most out of your filter. When I haven't had a spotmeter, I've just used bracketting to make sure I get enough exposure. Although that wastes an exposure or two, it usually works okay for those times when you don't have your meter.
