The speakers are magnetically shielded so as not to interfere with the TV picture.
The system is compatible with a host of other components, with three analog audio inputs, one analog audio output, three optical digital inputs, a coaxial digital input, and an optical digital output. This is the 3rd home theather Sony branded I have. I bought this unit less than a year ago and the display went dead suddenly. Now Sony is charging me $200 to have it fixed. What a disappointment for a company that claims to be best in class. Never will do business with them again.
BUZZZZZZZ..........2004-06-10
I was very pleased with this system for the first month or so I owned it (better speakers would make it much better though..); However, shortly after that it began making a loud intermittent buzzing noise. This noise ranges from almost imperceptible, to so loud it drowns out almost all other audio output. It seems to be coming from the satelite speakers only.
I have a friend with a different Sony system and he has a similar problem with his subwoofer. (Maybe this is a problem with Sony products in general?) He tried to get it serviced and was told there was nothing wrong with it. I hope I have better luck, as this can really be a great system on the rare occasion that I can hear it over the sometimes thundering buzz!
A big step up from pro-logic.......2004-05-27
Wow! Our previous system was a Kenwood Dolby ProLogic receiver (100W/ch) w/ Bose 301 front speakers (we used "emulated" center channel) and some generics for the rear. And we thought it was nice. We were not prepared for this. After hooking things up we watched Jurassic Park. When the T-Rex roared you knew it, even if you were in a different room. On the other side of things, you can hear people speaking very clearly. I tend to agree that the manual could be a little more user-friendly but I had no trouble (mainly because I only hooked up the included DVD changer audio to the receiver {using digital via included coax}, the component video went straight to the TV and the speakers hooked to the receiver.) I have no more use for my equalizer, cd player, vcr, tape deck, etc. but there are plenty of hook-ups for these devices.
Mostly everything is set-up correctly right from the box. Just make sure you configure the DVD to turn on DTS and Dolby Digital. I also suggest using the digital coax (orange jacks) for connecting the DVD audio to the receiver and getting better speaker wires for the speakers (lamp cord from HomeDepot or Lowes is 100x better than the scrawny included wires)

I've owned this system for almost a year and find it is extremely versitile and does most everything I want. The only drawback is that it has no turntable inputs. That's right, I ahve an old AR turntable that I want to connect. Oh well.

This system is well worth the money. It really does sound fantastic. I have a large apartment and this baby fills it with no problem. The changer played every disc I threw at it (cd-r, cdrw, dvd r+) with no problem. I haven't been able to test out the progressive scan yet, but when my HDTV is delivered next week, I'm sure I won't be disappointed. I highly recommend this system.
Update: I got my new TV and let me just say that watching DVD's with Progressive scan and through component video cables is unbelievable! This system was one great buy!

I just bought one of these. It did not matter what direction I turned it, what postion the antenna was placed, or how much aluminum foil I put on the antenna, the weather station would not come in. Hate to put my safety in the performance of this product.

The item works perfectly if you do not place it near other mechanical devices, i.e. TV, air purifier, elec. clock, etc. Fortunately it hasn't alerted us yet so that will remain to be experienced. You have to turn it a
number of directions until you get the best reception, then leave it in that position.

I recommend this portable DVD compared to the Mintek and Initial brands (which are the same company/manufacturer, by the way). I originally purchased the Mintek 1810 model and found that the quality was just not up to par to what I was expecting. I returned that model and recently purchased the jWin JG-VD753 and it is 100% better. It is a little more bulky than the Mintek, but it comes with more features and is a more reliable portable DVD player. The sound quality is clear and loud and the picture resolution is very good. The battery has a nice feature of charging without being connected to the player.

absolutely love this thing. Get the extra battery (which subs into the cd rom port) for over 10 hours of battery life. I use it as my main computer, I don't even notice the 'small' screen. Has no screen distortion, nice resolution. I watch movies on it, play games (half life) on it, draw diagrams on it (with the additional mouse), and use wireless internet (true wireless: no internet cable AND no power cable) a lot. Really cute design, people are always impressed and asking where I got it.

I bought this laptop six weeks ago for my trip to Thailand (from Dallas). This is my fourth computer. I have a laptop at work and two desktops at home. I was in the market for a subnotebook, a light travel companion that have adequate computing power for simple tasks like word processing. My other choice was a Sony TR series subnotebook. Interestingly despite being ranked lower in a recent performance test, the Sony TR has been more popular. I guess people still believed in the brand.
The reasons for buying the Fujitsu (although I have not owned anything made by Fujitsu before) were (i) it was in stock (ii) it was $200 less than the Sony (iii) it had slots for different memory sticks e.g., for my Sony digital camera and my dad's Canon digital camera (iv) it was as light as the Sony.
I also purchased a notebook in-flight power cord to be used on the plane. This turned out to be unnecessary as the P5020D had a very long battery life. I was not close to running out of battery on the 13-hour flight. (I did not leave it on at all times). Also on AA flights, the seats with power outlets in the economy class Boeing 777 are the ones next to the aisle seats (in the 5-seat rows). This makes it a little awkward to move to the middle seat when the plane is not full. Check the AA.com site for the location of the AC outlet seats.
Other features I like: DVD/CD-RW drive, Clear battery remaining indicator, Easy-to-find switch to turn on/off wireless transmission (you'll need to turn it off during the flight), Universal adapter for 110/220 voltage (I use the laptop in both Thailand and the U.S. without having to purchase an additional adapter), Simple interface design (I have only had to refer to the manual once in the last one month)
Features I haven't tried: DVD player, IEEE 1394 connector, Digital audio out/in (for downloading songs to MiniDisc), Video out, USB interface, mini VGA adapter, Wireless LAN, swapping the dvd/cd-rw drive with an extra battery (optional)
Note: The keyboard is an 83-key keyboard functioning as a 101-keyboard. All keys are full-sized except for some non-alphabet keys like ".",",","/". Unfortunately, for foreign languages these keys are used for additional alphabets. (There are 44 alphabets in the Thai language). A slight inconvenience when writing in Thai.
