I love it!.......2007-07-18
Six months and I'm still in love with this TV. Some people mentioned having to pay shipping and handling, but I didn't have to do that. So I paid a total of about $900. The picture quality for HD channels is great---clear, crisp, distinctive colors and gives you an almost "there" feeling. As another reviewer mentioned the sound isn't that great, but for the TV sound that's fine and only a bit of a problem when I listen to music. Another minor issue I have is that the screen seems to continually have marks on it that only show when the TV is off. Other than that I think I got an absolutely wonderful bargain. Other TVs I priced for this size were $400 to $700 more.

Pleasantly surprised.......2007-05-24
Bought this during the under $600/free ship period in late '06. Was looking to buy a true HD, but the price was very hard to pass up. Did some research and concluded that ED would work for us considering how much $ we were saving, so we pulled the trigger. Quick delivery and no problems with the setup/hanging (bought the wal-mart mount as others suggested).
Here's my take on the TV:
- Picture is great with HD signal. I didn't know what to expect the HD 1080i signal to look like on an ED monitor, but I would say that if I didn't know it was ED, I'd certainly think it was HD (as long as I didn't get too close). Colors are bright and crisp, blacks are dark, etc. All around great experience. I and my kids are totally addicted to DiscoveryHD now, and March Madness was outstanding...
- Picture is better than true HD monitor for SD signal. I've seen SD Comcast signals on friend's HD monitors, and this one looks a lot better. Still looks awful when compared to the HD, but the upconvert is a lot less, so the picture looks better. Same goes for DVDs.
- Got a component hookup for my PS2 (yeah, I know I need to move up, but I don't play enough to justify the PS3 purchase right now, and the PS2 meets my needs). It looks so much better than the RCAs. Got Gran Turismo 4 (which is 1080i), and it looks magnificent.
- Sound is awful, but I intended to hook it to my wired surround sound anyway, so I don't care.
Very happy with the purchase. We may look to get a true HD at some point and hang this one in the bedroom or office, but for now we are very pleased with this as our primary TV.
You Get What You Pay For. .......2007-05-23
I bought this tv in December and it has never worked properly. The tv emits a high pitched electrical hum that will give you a headache within a few minutes. I had the tv "repaired" under warranty (this took over 2 months). When they returned the tv to me, it still had the same issue, so they came back to my house and picked it up (that was 3 months ago), and I still don't have it back. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and asked my credit card company to refuse payment. This tv, and Sylvania/Funai Corp are worthless.

I would give this NO stars if possible. This product is nothing but a piece of junk. After 4 months power went out and never came back on. It has been a month and am still waiting for Funai corp. which is sylvania to take care of this. They ignore you and will not return phone calls. Quite frustrating but I will not give up. Totally aggravating but like a previous review stated, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. It is a real PIECE OF ----. BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles, and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the 6842PE is a mere 4.6 inches deep, ideal for desk or wall mounting (Sylvania recommends Sanus Systems universal VMPLs, not included, for wall mounting). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. You do, however, need to be wary of image burn-in (wherein long-held stationary images leave a permanent impression in the screen).
One of the main benefits of a plasma screen is its vivid and brilliant color display of over 16 million colors. Additionally, the 6842PE affords extremely wide viewing angles (160 degrees) to afford clear views of the screen from nearly any position.
The 6842PE's 3-line comb filter enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). Want to linger on a powerful image? Hit "still" to freeze any picture at any time.
Connections consist of 2 component-video inputs (1 standard-definition, 1 HD), 4 composite-video inputs (2 conveniently positioned on a side panel for easy access), and 2 S-video inputs (1 on the side, 1 on the rear). There's no real reason to run audio into this device if you're not going to listen through its speakers, but it does have a stereo analog audio output (passthrough) in case you find a need for it.

We bought this TV in February of 2006 and have had it for a year now. It was side by side with a Panasonic HDTV and the picture was comparable. Maybe a 5% difference in sharpness but once we got it home you couldn't tell any difference. My brother has a 46" Samsung HDTV CRT and the picture on my Sylvania is hands down better. Of course thats comparing CRT to Plasma. I am running Digital cable with the HDTV package thru it and the picture is great.
Cons: - Speakers are horrible but I have it hooked up to surround sound.
- The remote is to basic. It has everything you need to run the TV and adjust it but it just seems cheesy.
- No HDMI connection

we bought this tv after looking at a ton of tv's, the 42 in size was perfect for what we needed. since i am not going to paying to recieve HD, i figured for the money this was perfect for us, we paid 1299.00 andanother two hundred for a decent surround sound which is a must. it was easy to setup, you need component cables to hookup DVD, we are on sattelite so we get a good picture,the sound is horrible as stated in other reviews,besides you got to have surround if you get a big screen. stil haven't found the remote code so i can program one remote. if anyone ever figures this out please add to review.

I found the TV was easy to setup. I think the picture quality is excellent. I have two issues with TV. The Standard 5W speaker are not just bad they are an total embarrasement. I can't believe someone would build a $2k TV with such bad audio. Be preparded to invest in a home theater system. The good picture is just nothing worth without the sound. I got me a Bose 321 and now I'm really happy!
I am still struggeling finding out the remote programming code for the TV. None of the codes provided by Bose seem to be working. I called Funai customer service and they told me to try Sylvania, Funai and Emersons codes as well, but still no success.
Just fine for a no-name brand.......2004-12-10
It was showing a demo DVD in progressive scan mode and some basic analog cable signals. I bought it because it was in my price range and it had what appeared to be the best picture among the other cheapy plasmas on display and it did not have the visible integrated speakers. I wanted a very clean and simple look and did not want the extra bulk of integrated speakers. I do wish they had added some wire guides or something as it is difficult to hide the cables coming down from the back. The remote also appears rather weak and flimsy, it was probably meant to be replaced by a Universal remote.
It took me a few days of tuning before I finally got the picture to my liking. I tested with some anamorphic DVDs and initially the image was sub par, decent contrast between darks and lights, but blacks appeared to be washed out with no detail and quite a bit of contour banding. The lights were still very nice. This was using 480i and S-Video from a standard DVD player. I then switched to a component cables and turned on progressive scan
Image quality improved, with bright colors details standing out vividly. I tested with Moulan Rouge and Hero (the Jet-Li original DVD Chinese release) both have some spectacular complex scenes... Both looked very good but I still thought the darker shades still lacked a lot of detail. On a hunch I bought some really expensive true 75ohm components cables... and bingo, suddenly darks came alive. I tested with Matrix and Heat, both containing a lot of dark scenes... though the blacks are still not up to the quality of Panasonic's Real Black Drive system. It was very acceptable to me.
Contrast ratio is stated at 1000:1, Compared to Panasonic's claimed 4000:1 it is noticeably dimmer. If I had a little more money I would have bought the Panasonic EDTV equivalent. But the Sylvania branded Funai Plasma is still a decent plasma definitely better than the AKAI, Daewoo, Gateway models I looked at. If you have the extra $500-$1000 dollars go with the Panasonic, JVC or Mitsubishi EDTV, but if your budget constrained, this plasma, with the proper set up, will provide decently.
I can't comment on it's performance with HDTV signals, but HDTV looks good on almost everything.

for the money this is great! I agree with the other reviews about getting to the volume...but not that big of a problem when you get use to it. I was really happy to see it arrive with all the accessories. This is a great gift idea for kids/teens that want their first MP3 player. The leather case looks cool but no clip, and no way to turn player off/on when in the case. You can however reach the pause/play feature when in the case. Nonetheless I give it FOUR STARS for an awesome bargain. and it sounds great too!
Joy Be Player is a Joy!.......2005-01-17
The JoyBe MP3 player is about portability (hang it on your neck) and ease of use. It holds 32 tracks, which is enough for the length of my workouts! With Windows XP, you just use Microsoft Explorer to transfer files. You need to set up file order by naming convention in Explore. Then scroll through files on the Joy Be. Titles show up on the screen. The USB connection is integrated into the unit -- no extra cords necessary -- just like a memory stick. The menu is simple, the "reset" works, the unit seems rugged enough to last as long as its battery.
Lowlights: There is no charge level indicator, volume is 2nd level menu, the USB connector is probably the mechanical weak spot of the unit. The earphones are not comfortable for me, but sound OK. I do wish for more storage, but plan to wear this player out first!
almost perfect..........2004-09-30
i think that i'm the first person ever in the world to review this player... i looked everywhere for a review to see if i should buy this thing or not, but couldn't find any... so i went for it anyways... it's a nice small player, and worth it for the price, there's only one really big thing that you people might find small, but, there's no clip or anything for when you run... it's like you made a leather case for the thing, can't you add a little clip? it's not that hard... secondly, you have to go into the menu to access the volume and the hold function, which is weird... and the headphones they give with it, are actually pretty nice... pretty good sound... it looks really nice too, i just really wish there was a clip man... now i gotta hold it in my hand when i run, which sucks... oh well...
