These are some harsh reviews I'm reading. I personally owned this CD player and am coming back for another. My last player lasted two years of constant use, dropping, crushing, occasional tossing you name it. The controls are simple, I can use it in the dark half asleep. The sound quality is fine with descent headphones. It's nothing fancy but under normal use the anti-skip is more than adequate. It DOES play all the CD-R's that I've encountered. The bass boost DOES work noticeably. I will however admit that the included headphones are of typical "street style" quality in terms of sound and brittle plastic construction. The inline volume adjust is too sensitive, a brush against your arm could cause the music to stop entirely or blast unexpectedly. Also after a few weeks it (the headset) started crackling. If you care at all about a pure sound you never would have put on the stock set on, there isn't a good set to be found on any player. It does not play MP3's but I've heard that most MP3's are of poor quality anyway. If you want luxury features or a status symbol you will be disappointed. If you want a simple reliable player that wont skip then you've found it.
Don't Buy This Discman.......2001-07-03
This Discman has given me many long hours of grief. The batteries die down so quickly. Also, it is not very compatible with CD-R's. If you buy this discman to save money, the batteries will cost way more in the long run. Go for a discman that uses at least 30 hours out of your batteries.

This cd player is really junky. there are so many down sides to it. 1)the headphones are really cheap. They were made of cheap plastic, and broke very easily. 2) The anti-skip feature is basically useless, since it still skipped when it was activated. 3) it's pretty bulky. 4)It doesn't play very long when you use 2 AA bateries instead of the AC adapter. 5) it doesn't play CD-R cd's. The only reason why I still gave this product 2 stars was because it was pretty good when it was new, and everything worked perfectly. However, this product is NOT worth it for the price. To be honest, a cheap CD player like this should be priced for $15.

It looks pretty good for [the price] but there is more than what meets the eye. Let's start with the good qualities: 40 second anti-shock, bass-boost system, nice design, durable, one year warrany. Now the downsides: The anti-shock needs to build up for 40 seconds at the beginning of every track or each time you return from pause, so therefore if, say, you're jogging with your CD player, you need to wait 40 seconds so the anti-shock can build up, otherwise the bouncing will wear it off while it builds up. The bass-boost makes barely any difference. All it does is increase the volume VERY slightly. After a while, you sometimes need to press the buttons a few times before they actualy respond. The "open" button is very easy to accidently pressand the hold button doesn't stop it. If you drop it while listening to a CD, that part will always screw-up unless you have anti-shock active (The CD will still play fine in any other device, CD player or boombox). And the most annoying part yet (at least it happened to me this way): Last week I put in a CD and tried playing it and I noticed my right headphone wasn't working. I tried using a different set of headphones and the car kit too but it was still screwed. Though I found out that if I put the headphone jack half-way in, I can hear with both ears but only the left ear's part. So say I listen to Bohemian Rhapsody, which has a lot of stereo effects, I hear the left ear part in both ears and the right ear part is missing. REALLY ANNOYING!!! Oh yeah, and all this happened just after my warranty expired. AAAHHH!!! So since durability and nice design don't really count if the thing sucks, the bottom line is buy this if you think [theprice] is worth it for a slightly under average CD player that's good for a year.

This is a pretty "cool" CD player and I like the 40 second anti-skip, but I bought it for my car. I have a nice little built-in space for a CD player in my car. Well, this particular CD player doesn't fit in it because the two outlet plugs are on either side of the player. One on the left, one on the right. This makes it wider, and therefore does not fit. That is really annoying! Plus, when the weather is too cold. It doesn't work. I can't keep it in my car in the winter. So depending on what you'll use it for, it's ok.

An impressively low price, and easy-to-reach controls, make this portable CD player a good buy for bargain hunters. You will even find some of the advanced playing options you'd expect in more expensive units. The GPX C3860 lets you program a playlist, shuffle, and repeat tracks. A bass boost option gives a nice extra push to the sound, but overall, sound reproduction isn't as rich as you'd hear on a higher-end player--a minor quibble considering the unit's affordability. The GPX C3860 is a nice looking unit, with a plastic, matte-gray, metallic-looking front. The primary buttons--skip (back), search (forward), set, program mode, stop, play/pause, and open--are all located on the front, and are easy to find and press. The CD door doesn't go up very far, which makes it slightly difficult to remove and insert discs. The LCD, located between the set and program mode features, shows you track, minutes, and seconds. By pressing the program mode button, you cycle through the following options: repeat track, repeat all, intro scan, random, and program. As you cycle, each option appears on the LCD and you simply press "set" to activate the one you want. You need to select your option within the first seconds of playing the CD, or else it doesn't go into effect, something which we found a bit confusing at first. For the program option, you forward or back up to the track you want, press set, and continue this procedure until you've completed programming. We found the programming process somewhat confusing on this unit, thanks in part to the fact that the indicators on the LCD were not easy to understand.
On the left side of the unit are the headphone jack, line-out jack, and volume control. In the front are the bass and hold switches. The latter is a useful option that lets you deactivate all other features when you don't want an accidental mode change--for example, a change to a carefully programmed disc.
The headphones are a bit on the light side, although this will please some people. Buffering is adequate; jarring the unit sharply made it stop for a couple of seconds, though it did resume where it left off. The unit is normally powered by two AA batteries, and a battery-saving feature shuts the power off several seconds after a CD stops playing. The GPX C3860 also has an AC jack.

Hope you can lead me in the right direction. I have two boys, ages 10 & 12, who received GPX Model C3853G Portable CD Players for Christmas last year. The CD players work fine, unfortunately they have lost the covers for where the batteries go in. They both lost the cover for their CD player. Can you supply the address for the manufacturer? If this Model CD player is no longer made, we will need to purchase new ones, with battery covers intact.

I bought this product for price to try out the idea of having a portable CD player. I unfortunately failed to realize that it DOES NOT have Anti-Shock. The music quality of the this system is AWESOME! The headphones played well even on the higher setting and it was crystal clear. For me the music quality in conjunction with the super low price makes this product a wonderful item to get if you are not yet willing to pay the rather high prices for the others. As well it is perfect for those who plan to use it in stationary places like commuting and outdoors. This is unfortunately not the case if you plan on doing ANY exercise or excessive movement. Without the Anti-shock the product skips rather frequently. While it doesn't lose its place in the song nor does it stop playing the occasional scratching sound of the skips can be annoying. As for the other reviews claiming that the product did not work this player comes with a "lock" feature to prevent accidental button pushing.

Not too long ago I got this cd player and I was coming home from a trip and as I walked in my front door, I dropped it on our tile front entry-way. I was soooo mad cuz I broke it!!! This is a totally awesome player!! It's cheap and it works great-the bass is much better than most!! The color/design is totally awesome, and the sound adjustment on the cord is totally convenient!! (that's what I miss the most) so I've come online to order a new one and decided to write a review. I will warn buyers though that the picture is slightly decieving cuz the silvery trim is actually more of a see-through milk white color.(which I like better anyways) Also if you buy one, be extra careful with the headphones when you put them on... they aren't as sturdy as most. and I didn't think about it but it does eat up batteries pretty quickly- but I liked it a LOT > so I really don't care!

I bought two of these for our home. My wife and kids are radio junkies so I put one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen.
The only common thing I think that keeps these types of radios from a great review are the reception difficulties.
I would like to see a stronger antennae. That would make this item five star.
Mounting was easy and the cord is nice and long. Crisp sound. Recommend.

I got this item for christmas a few years ago and from the begining the CD player has not worked, It will start to play and then about 6 minutes into the CD it will stop.
The only thing this alarm clock is good for is the beeping alarm. Its just and expensive alarm clock. Look elsewhere if you want to wake up to your favorite CD. This doesn't cut it.

You may not be familiar with the GPX C3948BI CD player, but it's a great unit and definitely worth your consideration. It's loaded with useful features, such as 22-track programming and random and repeat play modes. It comes with an adapter kit that lets you plug the player into your car's cassette player for tunes on the road and a six-digit LCD that shows the track number and time counter. And there's an impressive 40-second antiskip buffer, which GPX calls an Anti-Rolling System, to keep your tunes from jumping forward when you nudge the player.
The C3948BI itself is impressive for the price. It handled the tremulous, high notes of Dmitri Shostakovich without sounding shrill, and it delivered the thumping bass line of a Cowboy Junkies song without sounding muddy. The bass boost switch didn't produce the kind of bass you can feel, but for our taste and for a portable CD player it sufficed. At a midrange volume level we detected a slight hiss, but when we adjusted the volume up or down it went away.
Try as we might to foil the Anti-Rolling System by vigorously shaking the player, we couldn't get the player to skip while the antishock was engaged. Then we dropped it on the floor, and to our surprise this plastic clamshell-style player held together nicely. We found the controls sensibly placed, and the buttons big enough and easy to push.
Our one disappointment with the GPX C3948BI was its headphones. While they look sleek enough and have an inline volume control/remote, they were uncomfortable and produced weak sound. In fact, using a different pair of headphones, we discovered that the player was capable of better sound and higher volume than was detectable using the ones supplied. Otherwise, we found the GPX C3948BI a very satisfactory portable CD player. --Cintra Pollack

I have had this for at least three years now, and it is still working as if I bought it yesterday! When I first saw it I thought it would break in a few months because it looks relatively cheap. But no, the player never broke and I have even dropped it a few times -- on the cafeteria floor. The only thing that I don't have anymore are the headphones, but those were actually cheap. I think they took about 6 months to a year to break? They still worked fine, but they had broken off from the tracking. Anyways, it's a really amazing piece even without the headphones -- plus I was able to get a new pair that I enjoy more.

I saw this CD player on sale at Amazon.com and thought, what a great deal! It was only $[money] or so at the time. Now, a year later, I realize it was too good to be true.
This CD player is lightweight and very easy to carry, which is one really good thing about it. When it works, the sound is also pretty good. However when it is bumped it doesn't play very well at all. This CD player also looks nice and I really liked the anti-skip feature, since I was primarily going to use it while running and driving- both bumpy activities. However, the CD player doesn't work well for either.
It is also awful on batteries - you can only play songs for about 45 minutes before it starts skipping and going out, and after an hour it just stops playing all together because it used all its batteries.
For one thing, the clear plastic case that covers where the CD fits into is very cheap and it cracked right away. Now that means it doesn't stay completely shut and in the middle of a song, it decides to stop reading the CD. In the car whenever there is the slightest bump, the CD player gets cranky and turns itself off for no reason. Then you have to start it all over again and find the song you were on.
While running it acts up as well, and I find myself having to hold it sideways, upside down, and every which way just to get it to play. Maybe this CD player would work well if you are sitting still and listeniing to it but other than that, it gives you all kinds of problems if you try to do anything besides that.
If you want a cheap CD player and are willing to settle for some problems it continually has, this one is a good bet. But otherwise I would recommend spending a little more money on a more reliable CD player. I wish I would have!

I received a GPX CD player (same model as this but older version) for Christmas. I used it pretty regularly for about a month (during which I was very happy with it) and then put it away for a while. The next time I used it, it wouldn't recognize any CD.
We returned it and received a new "updated" version which again worked for about a month. It has now been a month since I last used it and once again, it is not reading my CDs.
My advice? Don't try this one unless you enjoy being frustrated!

I bought my CD Player back in December, and it has not failed me yet! The car adapter waorks very well, and the unit itself offers okay sound. For the price of this item, you have to know that you aren't going to get "state of the art" anything - but the anti-skip feature has worked fine for me, the sound is fine and I utilize the "Hold" switch (which keeps the unit's buttons from being accidenatlly pressed) and the Bass Boost. The Bass Boost is pretty wimpy, although I must admit that I've never tried it with good-quality headphones, which might change the sound considerably. Speaking of headphones, my included pair did break about three months after I started using them. I simply replaced them with another cheap pair.
Complaints of short battery life can probably be attributed to the user leaving the anti-skip protection on for long periods of time. In my experience, this will drain the batteries faster than anything else, when using any CD player. If you need to use the batteries for an extended time, try to *not* use the Skip Protection, or else try to find a way to use one of included two adapters. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase, although your mileage may vary.
In conclusion, I must say that if you are looking for top-quality sound and construction, look elsewhere; if you just need something to play your CDs in and you can't afford to spend a lot of cash, this one's for you.

I've had this for less than a day, and am already tempted to chuck it out the window. The anti-skip feature apparently works by just randomly stopping the music altogether...ingenious.
This is just a piece of crap. Really, that about sums it up.

I bought this because of the car kit and it was reasonable priced. But you get what you paid for. I found out that the skip protection doesn't even work. Also the sound quality, with headsets, really stinks! Also, I have to buy a lot of batteries. It's cheap so you get what you pay for but stay away from this thing! You can find a better deal.

I was very impressed with this product, and the accompanying car kit was very welcome. There should be no qualms about the merit of this product other than three factors which I found quite significant, namely:
An EL backlight for the LCD display is absent. The Dynamic Bass Boost would seem to be lacking. The volume cannot be taken to extremely high levels.
Other than the above, the programming modes and the other features are well structured and physically laid out. On the whole, I would call this a very good value-for-money item.
