Amazingly affordable, Toshiba's 34HF84 is ready for the digital future with a widescreen dimension, a wealth of picture-enhancing technologies, 2 high-definition component-video inputs, an HDMI direct-digital connection for hookup with a DTV set-top box or HD satellite receiver. And the 34-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks great, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity.

Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to 1080i resolution. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals.

DFine high-speed VSM (velocity-scan modulation) also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Finally, Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown reversal) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

As standard video amplifiers increase the gain of the video signal, video bandwidth tends to decrease. This eliminates the higher frequencies, reducing resolution. The 34HF84's wideband video amplifier maintains the higher frequencies, enabling higher resolution and greater sharpness and detail.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can directly select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them.

Two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

The set's stereo speakers are powered by 10 watts per channel, and SRS WOW processing combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass low-frequency enhancement, and Focus (which clarifies voices).

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your television. The best TV I've ever owned..........2005-11-21

This is the last and the best TV ever released by Toshiba. I learned from research that both the Toshiba 34HF84 and 34HFX84 reportably were the last HD CRT TVs ever made by Toshiba. Picture and color are excellent. Inputs work great. Very high quality. They will be collector's items. I highly recommend this TV to anyone.

Toshiba TVs are not reliable........2005-06-24

I purchased a Toshiba HDTV and had it fail just after the 2 year warranty expired. Toshiba explained there was nothing they would do back up their product. No TV should fail after 2 years. I recommend selecting another brand, you can get the same performance and price, and end up with a more reliable product.

Great picture, but what's with the grey bars?.......2004-11-21

I thoroughly researched my first HDTV purchase, settling on a 34" widescreen for my small space, not to mention the cheaper price for these sets, plus their reputed superior picture. I bought this Toshiba sight unseen, so I was a little nervous about the picture quality. Once I got it a couple of days ago I was quite impressed. I have both digital satellite (DISH) and basic cable, and even the cable looks great. One thing that did bother me was the grey bars on the side of the screen when watching a 4:3 standard TV source (SAT, CBL). The manual warns that burn in caused by these bars is not covered under warranty. So why the heck didn't they make the bars black, which don't pose the same kind of risk? Fortunately, the Toshiba set offers a multitude of modes to stretch the 4:3 image to fill the whole 16:9. And much to my delight, the image doesn't appear badly distorted. In fact, in many instances, it almost looks more natural, as if that's the way it was originally filmed. Mind you, I don't yet have an HDTV source.

Movies on DVD are spectacular. The TV upconverts the 480p signal from a progressive scan DVD player to either 540p or 1080i.

I was also impressed with the sound from the TV's built-in speakers. In fact, at one point when I was testing them, I even forgot that I was getting the sound from the TV rather from my audio receiver, which is how I'll normally watch it.

PROS: connectivity options, picture quality, stylish design (small footprint, 33 1/2 in. wide, with speakers below screen), stretching modes, sound from built-in speakers, lighted remote.

CONS: grey bars for 4:3 sources and POP; minor geometry problems; upconversion of standard TV (480i) to 1080i is automatic (can't deactivate it) and may make some programs look "shimmery" esp on basic cable.

On a side note: the first set I got through the Amazon marketplace retailer BeachAudio arrived busted up. I refused delivery, called BeachAudio, and they had a replacement out to me in 3 days. Excellent customer service. It sometimes pays to go with an established online retailer.

Updated 12/12/04: I recently saw the following posting on AVSforum.com: "The grey is used by Toshiba to delay burn in, as it uses the pixels underneath the grey, rather than leaving them not activated or activated with black." At any rate, I suggest not letting the grey bar issue effect your decision.

Excellent value for the price.......2004-11-08

After buying our first HDTV last year (a Sharp 37" LCD) it was clear that we would never buy a regular analog TV again. But when we needed to get a 16:9 aspect ratio HDTV to fit in a 37" wide wall unit in our family room, we found the choices very limited. None of the Sony 34" models would fit. Only 3 models fit and the Toshiba seemed the best choice.

After getting it home and hooking it up to a HD cable box and DVD player, we are more than satisfied. The HD pictures are excellent - much, much better than our previous analog set could produce. Same for DVD. Although clearly less Hi Def than HDTV (the DVD is only 480p whereas the HDTV is 1080i), DVDs look much better than they did on our older Sony analog TV.

The set is easy to use and almost all of the controls on the remote (which can easily be programmed to handle the most basic features of your receiver and cable box) are very intuitive.

Make no mistake about it. This 34" HDTV is nowhere near as crisp or clear as our 37" LCD HDTV. As far as I can tell, rumours to the effect that CRT (picture tubes) still deliver a better picture than LCD are just plain wrong. One can easily see that in the showroom or at home. But this CRT HDTV only cost about 1/3 the price of an LCD. For 1/3 the price, you get all the same digital HD features, and a picture that, while not quite as sharp and clear as an LCD, is still far, far better than the best picture you can get on an analog, non-HD TV. IF you don't need the thinness of LCD (or plasma) and want a mid-sized 16:9 HDTV, consider this Toshiba. I think you will be pleased with the picture and the cost/value ratio (<$1150 delivered to your door).

Excellent widescreen high-definition TV .......2004-10-24

If you currently have a conventional TV set with the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio but watch a lot of DVDs, you're probably tired of black spaces above and below the picture wasting much of your TV's screen size whenever you watch the widescreen movies which have become the norm on DVD. The cure for this problem is to get a widescreen TV with a 16:9 aspect ratio. This Toshiba is an excellent 16:9 TV with a very sharp picture. Also important, this is an HDTV set which is ready to display the dramatically improved picture quality characteristic of the new High Definition Television broadcasts to which all networks are rapidly converting and which are now available from most cable and satellite providers. Although this Toshiba's 34" screen may not be as huge as projection TVs and some of the new thinscreen plasma TVs, it is still quite large. Furthermore, it's picture quality is equal to plasma TVs and better than projection TVs -- and its price is much lower. All things considered if you want a widescreen TV that's ready for HDTV and you don't want to break your budget to get one, this excellent Toshiba set may well be the answer.

This is a fine camera if it were not for its hunger for batteries. One set of AA batteries lasted for about 10 pictures when flash is needed. With this consumption rate for batteries, it becomes impractical to use this camera.

Konica KD-300Z.......2002-08-10

The pixel count for this camera is outstanding, since this is one of the smallest and lightest digital cameras on the market. It is rugged, esthetically pleasing and easy to learn to use. It is perfect for the student who wants to record their memories while away at college. The USB/Camera interface is so easy to use, even grandma will love it and insist on getting and sending pictures to the whole family.

The Konica Digital Revio KD-300Z is the same camera as the Kyocera/Yashica Finecam S3. It's a great little camera. You could, if you wanted, complain about some of its limitations -- yes, it's slow, the zoom is only 2x, focus is a bit soft, the range of resolutions is more limited than it should be, battery life is terrible, the camera body gets hot, the lens motor is a tad noisy, movies have no sound, the LCD always comes on after power-up (even if you turned it off previously), and the flash is weak. But so what?

The KD-300Z/S3 is the only 3 megapixel camera I know that's small enough and solid enough for me to carry all the time. It's smaller than my cellular phone and fits in the tiny breast pocket of my microfibre cycling vest. It offers a remarkable range of manual controls -- from aperture to ISO sensitivity to white balance to focus. Moving from photo to photo in View mode is faster than on any other camera I've ever used. The build quality is outstanding. It remembers most settings when you turn it off, which some other cameras don't. It's usable by a rank amateur, but if you know what you're doing you can take very good pictures using the manual settings.

It has a raw TIFF mode, a decent optical viewfinder, very close macro focusing (6 cm), an all-metal body, and an above-average package bundle that includes a 16 MB MMC storage chip, a USB card reader and extension cable, a soft leatherette pouch, a video-out cable, and power cords for both 120 V and 240 V standard outlets. The controls are logical and surprisingly usable (despite their tinyness) after a quick read through the thorough manual. Newer versions of the Mac OS and Windows recognize the SD card reader without new drivers. Most important, you'll take the camera with you when you'd leave even a Nikon CoolPix 775 behind.

Its only competitors are the Canon Digital ELPH/IXUS models, but they are 2 megapixel cameras without as much manual control, and maybe the larger and more expensive Fuji FinePix F601. The price has come down too, since the design is now a year old, and it is an excellent deal. Grab a spare battery and a 128 MB SD card, and you're set.

Or buy a 3 megapixel camera that's faster and takes better pictures -- then leave it behind for that perfect shot because it's too lumpy to carry. Your choice. If you want a tiny camera that's still capable, the Finecam is a good bet.
