The Benefits of HDTV

Standard TVs (SDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the interlaced scan method, which creates a picture with alternating lines of information.

Enhanced-definition TVs (EDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the progressive-scan method, which creates an image using consecutive lines of information for a crisp, flicker-free picture.

High-definition TVs (HDTVs) display a maximum of either 1,080 interlaced lines or 720 progressively scanned lines for the sharpest possible image.

And since not everything you watch will be high-definition in origin (wouldn't that be nice), CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all video signals (including 480i/p) to 1080i HD. This significantly reduces jagged-line artifacts for a smoother, more natural image. (Selectable 540p, for those who want a progressive-scan image from a progressive-scan source, is available through the onscreen menu.) CableClear DNR+ Digital Noise Reduction circuitry optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable by eliminating video noise (snow).

Meanwhile, DFine high-speed velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction processes RF and composite-video signals for a sharp, clean picture. This advanced filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricate scenes. The TouchFocus digital convergence system creates perfect corner-to-corner focus at the press of a button. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown) circuitry identifies film-based content from DVDs and reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce a movie's original 24-frame rate. This process eliminates artifacts and provides sharp, accurate full-frame progressive images.

Finally, the set's TheaterFine HD super fine-pitch screen uses a .52 mm design to reduce the space between lines on the lenticular screen, thereby sharpening the image. With convenient direct video input selection, you can choose specific inputs right from the remote's numbered keypad--no more scrolling through all the inputs to find the one you want.

The 57H83's arsenal of connections includes a DVI input for an HDTV receiver.

For audio, the 57H83 offers SRS WOW, combining SRS 3D (which creates a wide three-dimensional sound field), TruBass (which boosts bass frequency perception for dramatic low-frequency effects), and Focus (which raises the perceived sound image vertically to clarify voices) to greatly enhance home-theater sound. StableSound maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal, and Toshiba's Sub Bass System (SBS) boosts a program's low-end audio for heightened dramatic impact.

The 57H83 is loaded with connections of all stripes, including a DVI HDTV input, which gives you a pure, uncompressed video connection with your DTV receiver or set-top box (not included). The supplied Illuminated Universal Remote also controls most manufacturers' VCRs and DVD Players, and the set's split cabinet design allows the cabinet to be split in two for ease of delivery and installation.

WE BOUGHT THIS TV IN 42 INCH AND AND WE WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOSHIBA
BRAND PRODUCT OF ANY KIND, THEY SENT OUT PEOPLE TO REPAIR A BRAND NEW TV & THEY PRETTY MUCH GUTTED THE TV AND REPLACED ALL PARTS, AFTER CONTINOUS POPPINGS AND THE MOTHER BOARD REPLACED AFTER CONSTANT FLICKERING AND IS STILL VERY FUZZY, THE ONLY TIME IT LOOKS GOOD IS WHEN A DVD IS PLAYED IN IT. TOSHIBA PRETTY MUCH HAS IGNORED US AND THEY WERE VERY RUDE AND I HAVE A FILE FULL OF REPAIRS TO THIS TV. WE WILL REPLACE THIS AND MOVE THIS TO THE BASEMENT OR GARAGE. I WOULD NOT EVEN GIVE THIS TV AWAY.

Had it since 2003 and it's still going in 12/2005, so no complaints. it's 1080i not 1080p and thats going to be our next set. For the price you cant beat it.

Nice Pic, about as reliable as a 1986 Yugo; BEWARE!!.......2004-11-10

My wife and I were excited at finding such a good TV at a semi-reasonable price ($1900); we had owned a Toshiba 26 inch for 11 years without a hitch. Much like the some of the other reviews, about two months after we bought it; POP! The screen went blank. After a week and a half of waiting, Toshiba sent out repair people and fixed it. They replaced something they called a reflection board. Then, a month later; POP! Same problem. No picture, and now the part is on backorder. No one can tell us when it will arrive. I've been told to FAX a copy of our receipt to them and they will consider replacement. Why do I think that will take even weeks longer? We have a brand-new TV that refuses to work, and Toshiba is being zero help. SHAME on Toshiba for not recalling this piece of JUNK! DO yourself a favor; if you are looking to buy this TV, just keep on looking and save yourself a MAJOR headache!

Bad picture .......2004-08-21

I can't believe this TV received high marks from Consumer digest. The picture in HDTV looks like an Andy Warhol painting. Normal TV also looks very fuzzy. The DNR filter does not seem to be doing anything.

I looked at many TV's and read many reviews before buying this TV and think the picture quality of this one is among the best. Another important and uncommon feature of this television is that splits into two pieces for easier moving. These 57" rear projection televisions are huge, and if you ever plan on moving them, this feature is important. It's not always possible to get the T.V.s that don't split into some apartments. I was orginally getting a Sony, but the delivery guys couldn't get it into my apartment.

I've had it for a few weeks and am very satisfied so far.

This phone was definately not worth the money.
The sound quality is very poor--sounds very tinny with an echo. Long distance phone calls are muffled, and the volume doesn't go very high. Reception is fine, but I wouldn't recommend this phone. One could probably find a phone for cheaper and of a better quality. Don't buy GE.

I've tried to use this phone as my business phone for some time. I've got a headset and I can't get enough volume out of it. If you dial a number and hit the talk button the phone will sometimes skip digits and you will get an error.

I will not be buying GE phones again.

Good power protection, poor software management.......2005-07-17

As a standalone UPS, this unit works flawlessly as designed. If the power flickers, which would ordinarily cause at least a reboot, if not actually damage a computer, the 350 continues to supply power so my computer never knows the difference. If the power goes out for an extended amount of time, I can usually get several minutes out of it.

However, my two main complaints are with the software management, and lack of load handling.

The lack of load handling is to be expected. The documentation makes no pretense, and tells you not to load more than 350W, or the unit shuts off. This is not enough to power just my PC and my (19") monitor. So, I only have my PC plugged in. Otherwise, the unit will shut down. 350 is not enough for a PC and a modern monitor. Perhaps in the days when people used 14 and 15 inch monitors.

My second and biggest complaint about it is the software management. To be blunt, it doesn't work. I have Windows XP professional with Service Pack 2, and after plugging in the cable and installing the software, it can't "find" my UPS. I do I.T. for a living, and I can't get it to work. I can't imagine a "normal" person being able to get it to work. Too bad.

So, not being able to plug in my monitor to battery backup, and not having the software working so that it will automatically save my files and shut down my computer, presents a big problem for me. Whenver the power goes out and it seems that it will be off for more than a few minutes, I have to use my memorized keyboard commands to shut down my computer. Since the software won't do it for me, and I can't see what I'm doing, I have to rely on my memory and keyboard expertise to save what I was doing and shut down safely. It almost, kind of defeats the purpose of having a UPS.

Overall, as a "dumb" UPS, it works perfectly. It's too bad they couldn't get the brains working right.

Best So Far.......2003-09-19

Just to chime in with what the other review said, this is the best UPS I've had so far. I've had 2 other ones (including an older Tripplite model) that worked well but stopped holding a charge after like 8 months. I've had this one for over a year now and it still works great (hurricane Isabel has given me at least 30 off-on type power outages tonight and yet here I sit -- I was actually shopping for another one so I can put my router and second computer on it).

It will only support your system for a couple minutes, but just being saved from those 1-second outages is worth it. I have my 19" monitor, my computer and a USB cablemodem plugged into it and it saves both my computer and my internet connection from power failures.

This is a great investment, even if you live somewhere where the power is normally stable.

I get a lot a lot of very brief power outages. The electricity goes off for about a half second, but then comes right back on - just long enough to make the PC reboot. That's the primary reason why I bought the Internet 350.

In the two months that I've owned the unit, I've had about a half a dozen of these "mini-failures". Each time, the Tripp-Lite has performed flawlessly, filling the gap in power so that my PC never even knows that anything has happened. I've also had one more serious power outage that lasted several minutes. The Internet 350 gave me more than enough time to save my data, shut down the applications I was running and power down my PC, 17" Monitor and Cable Modem in an orderly fashion.

The unit has a total of 6 AC outlets - 3 for surge protection only and 3 for surge protection and power backup. One of each set of 3 outlets is spaced to accomodate a transformer block without interfering with the other outlets. There are also telephone jacks so that you can surge protect your telephone modem line. LEDs give you the unit's status and it beeps when you're on battery backup.

I'm completely satisfied with my Tripp-Lite Internet 350 UPS and can recommend it without hesitation.
