Poor product, support is nonexistant.......2003-09-14
Just a word of caution, I have just received my second replacement drive for the CDRW 48X16X48 drive I bought less than a year ago, and the second replacement drive is also defective!!!!
The original drive worked well up until about 2.5 months ago so I contacted the IO Magic RMA department, got an RMA number and sent the drive to them. After a few weeks I got a replacement drive (which was not branded as IO Magic and had a different faceplate from the one I sent in) an lo-and-behold, it was also defective... It could burn disks at 12X and lower, anything higher than that and the disk would be full of errors (checked using Nero's CD Quality check). I wasted four CD-Rs from different manufacturers finding this out.
So I send them another email, telling them the replacement drive was bad as well. After about a week I got a reply that said 'sorry about that, here is a new RMA # and we'll have UPS come pick up the drive within 2 business days'.
'Well that's nice', I thought. And it would have been if only they had picked up the drive, which they didn't. A week later after sending them an email (generating no response) about why they had not picked up the drive, I gave up and sent it to them on my own nickel.
Now I have received the replacement drive for the replacement drive and I am almost 100% sure they just sent me back the same drive again!!! Accompanying this defective drive was one piece of defective media!!!! A paper sleeve with a CD-R that was severely scratched and which had been written on already (though the disk was unreadable. They probably wrote it with the drive they sent me...).
I'm telling you. Do not buy any products from these guys if you ever think you're going to have to deal with their RMA department and support. And chances are you will.
And you know the funny thing is I don't even need this drive. I have three other fully functioning CD-RW drives at home (BusLink & 2 Sony). At this point I am more interested to find out whether they are actually going to honor their warranty. And it makes for a good conversation topic when talking to friends.
It is amazing how big a difference good support makes. When it is there, it builds brand loyalty, when it is not, it makes you want to sit down and share it with the world so they will not have to go through the same pains.
I would highly recommend not buying any prodcuct sold by IO Magic under any of their brand names (I/O Magic, Hi-Val and Digital Research). There is a high chance you'll be buying a piece of junk and if you ever need support, you will not get it because they don't believe in providing their customers with support.
HAVE BEEN USING FOR SIX MONTH WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM.......2003-09-04
HAVE BEEN USING FOR SIX MONTH WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM. UPTO 48X SPEED, SILENT, WORKS GREAT, GREAT CHEAP PRICE FOR BURNING. I AM HAPPY WITH THIS DRIVE.
Very pleases with the product.......2003-07-04
For months I was looking for a CDRW drive that cheap but a very good one with a trusting company name. I walked in RadioShack the other day, and just happened to pick this up. I installed it in my tower, and now it has been 4 monts since I last bought, and hasn't failed me yet. I think the only reason people are arguing is because they don't know how to use the recorders right.
Piece of junk.......2002-12-20
Probably the worst CDRW I have ever had the misfortune of using. I have experienced the same issues as the other reviewers. None of the CDs which were supposedly burned successfully are recognized in any drive. Even when it did work (which was not long) it said it was burning at 48x, but it took it almost 15 minutes to burn a cd. If you are thinking about buying this burner, you might as well go ahead and throw your money in the garbage...
Poor, poor product!.......2002-12-07
Mine also worked for about a week, and then the disks it claimed it has successfully burned would not be recognised by any player, AND if I tried to play them, they would lock up the computer or the DVD player at the television set. Poor product! The version of Nero bundled with it will not work with any other drive either. Even the construction of this drive is cheap and probably wouldn't last long----if the drive worked long enough for this to be an issue!

wasted hours trying to get it to work........2006-06-15
this is the worst piece of computer equipment I ever bought. after giving up on my last computer I boxed up the dvd burner and forgot about it. now I have a whole new computer without a dvd burner so I thought I would see if maybe the problem was my old computer like the people at iomagic said. I guess IOMagic was wrong again because it doesn't work in my new computer either.
A piece.......2004-03-21
this burner is a waste of money period. i have two burners in my machine, one old DVD-R Pioneer 2x and just recently added this I/O "magic". i can't backup my cd's like i can with my pioneer. i use nero and when i try to make a copy of a cd it says, "please insert empty disc". but then when i take that same disc and put it in my pioneer it works fine. I/O magic's products are crap. unfortunately i didn't read the reviews on this drive before i bought it. saw a good price and jumped on it....oh well this will not happen again. be warned i usually don't waste my time writing reviews unless it is something peeps need to be aware of. THIS DRIVE BLOWS
Good Product But Beware Of I/O Magic Rebates.......2004-03-20
The recorder performs well for me and so far has accepted all media I have tried. This is actually an Optorite DD0203 ± recorder. The only complaint I have is I/O Magic's failure to honor the offfered rebate. I purchased this unit in Aug 2003 and submitted the required items to receive the $30.00 rebate. Inquires to the status of the rebate resulted in "unable to locate anything in our system". I have submitted copies of the information two additional times and still no luck. I will never buy another I/O Magic product.
Decent product, but don't count on getting your rebates!.......2004-01-14
I bought this product in September 2003 and haven't had any major problems with writing DVDs with it. However, I have not received the $50 in rebates that were promised as part of the purchase.
When contacted directly via phone, the rebate company (www.rebateservices.com) states that it has not received the requested information even though I have sent the documentation twice. The second time I sent copies of all the forms and UPC codes via certified mail which proves they received them. Two other people I know have had the same experience with this company.
Beware of I/O Magic rebates. If you're considering buying this product because it's offering a rebate, think again.
I/OMagic DVD Writer not 2x or 4x per specs-Burns RW Coasters.......2004-01-02
PRO: Cheap
CON:
Cheap - Could not obtain reliablility with Nero Diagnostics at 2x or 4x. When I advised I/OMagic Tech Support of problem, they sent new software that disabled 2x and 4x. Not reliable even at 1x. Model IDVDRW4D DVD Writer makes coasters out of even +/-RW Rewritable media. I/OMAGIC refuses to provide refund. Claim no responsibility. Quoting their Manager of Customer Service email response: "we are a wholesaler of computer goods and as such, under no circumstances do we offer any refund(s) for products purchased." I would not expect anything better out of this or any other I/OMAGIC product. The "magic" is "on the box" and not "in the box".
SUGGESTIONS:
I have just trashed my I/OMagic and purchased a Plextor Model PX-708A. After extensive testing with Nero, on all four formats, I have not experienced a single data error. However, don't expect the "in the box" software (Roxio EasyCD/DVD Creator) to work on all four formats. The problem is the communication between the Plextor and Roxio's packet writing software - now called "Drag to Disc" which was formerly DirectCD. I have installed a trial version of Nero and all formats are working so looks like I will spend another $60-$90 to purchase Nero. Gets expensive when you can no longer trust what is "in the box" to work like what is "on the box".
After a very frustrating and time-consuming DVD writer experience, my suggestion would be to spend more money to purchase a higher quality unit or not to purchase at all if you are interested in writing DVD's. If all else is equal, look for Nero "in the box" if you need to use packet writing. An additional advantage is the Nero diagnostics which can be downloaded free at www.cdspeed2000.com. These diagnostics won't work with "Drag to Disc" or any other packet writing software installed because you can only have one packet writer installed. I suspect Nero's packet writer is embedded in the Nero diagnostics which are all *.exe files - no installation required. These tools are also included in Nero 6 Ultra edition.
Hope this helps you avoid my bad experience as I have benefited from many Amazon reviews. We can only hope to keep the manufacturers honest by sharing our experience - good and bad.

Good Burner, even on an old machine........2006-12-30
I installed this burner and the software that came with it on an old Gateway computer (866) that has 384mb of RAM. I have XP pro installed on the old workhorse and it runs great. Adding the burner was super easy. XP did it's thing and installing the software was a snap.
The software that came with it is OK, but I think if I had a more powerful computer and wished to do more video editing, I would want more. But that that's the point of free OEM software, to try to sell you the upgraded version. For me the OEM software does the job.
The burner has trouble with discs (DVD+R) that I have made on my Lite-On 5007 DVD recorder. It reads them for a few seconds, then stops. Seems to happen with all the different programs, including windows. I've tried to copy the files from the DVD onto my hard drive, but so far no luck. To date, that's my only gripe about the burner. I hope to find a solution soon though.
I've burned several discs so far with no coasters. It burns a full 4.7 gig DVD in about 13 minutes, which I think is pretty fast. I have been using HP brand discs, and they work nice.
1/5/07 Update - The drive reads DVD+RW discs recorded on using my Lite-on 5007 DVD recorder. Now I can back up TV shows I wish to keep to my hard drive.

Customer Reviews:
Not for music CDs!.......2004-06-29
I got this at Office Max (...), but it's going back. I installed it and found myself unable to burn .wma files onto a music CD. Whenever I tried, it gave me an error message saying that it didn't recognize "file.wma", and that it only supports formats such as .mp3, .wav, ..., .wma!
After attempting to upgrade the software with their website (which took forever and didn't help), I found out that I would have to upgrade to the platinum edition ($$$) to use .wma's.
Sadly, my old burner's software (which I loved) won't work with this drive. So it looks like I'll be returning this drive, and getting the (...) burner here on Amazon, since it comes with good software.
Second reviewer is right; firmware upgrade solves problems.......2004-06-21
First, my three stars should only be taken with a grain of salt, as I haven't yet had a chance to give the I/O Magic CD-RW drive a thorough work out. I'm writing primarily to confirm that the second reviewer is correct: a firmware upgrade, available on I/O Magic's web site, does solve the problems with the drive. I was having the same issues that the first reviewer had, except I was using Easy CD Creator (version 5.3.5) from Roxio. I was just about to return the drive when I learned of the firmware upgrade.
Now the drive is recognized by the software, and I am able to burn data CD's (my primary use for this drive) at the maximum speed without problems. The drive may have some shortcomings in areas that I haven't tried yet, but considering the low price that I paid for it (...), I think it represents a good value for the money.
Firmware!!.......2004-01-18
You forgot to update to the new firmware...I had same problem but everything is A-OK.....Best bang for buck....
Worked perfect at first, then I get every error msg it has........2003-07-25
I got this from Best Buy a couple of months ago, installed it, and burned cds with perfect speed and perfect quality. All was fine through the first 30 or so cds, but after that I started getting weird error messages in Nero (the one I always used with it). So, I contacted Nero tech support and asked them what the problem could be, took a week and a half to get a response, and finally they ask me if my system meets all the requirements. Here's the kicker: I gave them the system requirements for the CD Burner, my system specs, and how I had the burner set up. So after that I contacted I/O magic's tech support, and I still haven't gotten a response after a week. So this thing is coming out of my computer and going back to the store. If you're thinking of buying this, I recommend making paper airplanes with your money instead. They're alot cheaper than the cds I had to buy, only for them to be turned into coasters.

Good "n" Inexpensive.......2002-01-19
I got one of these a couple of months ago and it's working well. This replaced an old 2x drive, also sold by I/OMagic.
I/OMagic repackages a number of brands in its boxes, but they're all from pretty reputable OEM outfits like BTC and Lite-On. Both my new one and the old one are BTC. It installed easily, runs quietly, and makes good discs. Mine came with Nero Burning Rom software, which works very well but took a little learning to use. Tech support from I/OMagic could be a little more responsive, but if you know what you are doing this is probably a very good buy.
Speed for the Times.......2002-01-05
Can you really tell the difference between a 550 and 733 if you're a just a regular consumer browsing the net? I think not. What if you're a computer geek that spends 12+ hours a day in front of the computer? YES! I am a member of the first group of users. My roommate has the fastest CD-R available, and he paid for it. I have seen him burn CD after CD. Most of the time he never uses them again. I have the I/O Magic 16X10X40 Internal CD-RW Drive! It's perfect. Right in my price range, fast enough for my needs. I burn Music, pics, last semester's docs... and more. No data gaps or skipping. And the software is easy to use. Don't forget to add the CD labeler to your cart. I didn't the first time and I ended up having to come back later to get. In the mean time all my CD's got disorganized. Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP is the most affordable and pretty much works best. If you don't have XP Easy CD Creator 5.0 Platinum is the bomb!
Happy Burning!

Vista Incompatible.......2007-05-16
You must first install the software, then shut down, then install card, then power up and configure. Unfortunately, you cannot install the software if you are running any version of Vista. D-Link tech support apologizes for this known issue and suggests downloading their Vista driver Beta which they describe as 'unstable.' Huh?
This one finally worked.......2007-02-06
I have several Linksys wireless adapters, usb, pci, etc that I could never configure with a Linksys wireless cable modem/router. This one worked fine. Go figure. I had to reinstall once when it stopped working by (1) removing software, (2) removing the card, (3) reinstalling software, (4) reinstalling the card. Installing software 1st seems to be an important step.

yes, it works with the linux madwifi (atheros: ath_pci) driver. although w/ FC6 is a real pain to configure....eg. i had it working properly w/Network Manager and suddenly, not working again. at any rate it's linux approved! now go forth and b mobile. :-)
Great Connection...Difficult Setup.......2007-01-06
Overall, I have a great connection that has not failed in the 4 months I've owned it. The only drawback I had with this is that the install instructions were insufficient and I had to wind up calling customer service. Although I thought this was a pain, they got it to work properly and I have not been dissappinted. I highly recommend getting this product.
Avoid this junk.......2006-12-04
Now I see why this thing was only $20 retail. Its a piece of junk. It takes forever to connect to a router that is only 10 feet away. The highest download speed I achieved was 53 Kb/s and I am on a 6 Mb/s network. The latest drivers at the D-Link site are 2 years old. Now I see why there was a big stack of them at the retail store. They are trying to dump all the obselete junk on the consumers. I took it back to exchange for a Linksys
