When the unit worked, it worked well. Unfortunately the built in amplifier is of poor quality, and doesnt last long. I dont recommend this to anyone.

I have to say, after hearing many different brands of audio equipment out there. KLH is the best deal I've seen yet. I see all these people saying how they have so many problems, what are you people doing to this sub for it to stop working that fast? It has an internal amp, that doesn't mean you need to use the speaker inputs with high amp and then have the gain up high. Are you running it for long periods with bass testers or something? Read the manual, it says to prevent long and loud bass for extended periods of time. Maybe you people just don't know how to use audio equipment the proper way and with care for the equipment as well. And anyways, just like with a car for instance, you don't get it and then floor it until you break it in a little, the same thing goes for audio equipment.
Besides the aspect of its "problems" people seem to have generated with this speaker, I would say it has the quality of some Velodyne subs, and they are almost 2 times the price for an 8" subwoofer. So, all I can say is, if you want an awesome stereo system and don't want to refinance your house, go with KLH for everything, I've had no problems with any of my equipment (Digital Dolby Receiver, Floors, Bookshelfs, Sub and my other stereo w/ 8" bookshelfs).

not a quality piece. i usually like KLH products, but this is definitely a case where you get what you pay for.
the sound is loud, but very boomy and not controllable at all. i played around with it for a few hours and had to take it back - it was worthless to me. and i'm not an audiophile.
i eventually bought a jbl PB10 and it's considerably better. it's twice the price, but worth it for the improvement in sound.

Strange Buzzing sound and then it stopped working.......2001-09-23
This subwoofer worked great during action scenes, but during the quieter scenes it had a really annoying humming sound coming from it and it made it hard to concentrate on dialogue. I played with all the dials and made sure the wires were plugged in correctly, but it didn't help. After the warranty expired, so did the subwoofer. I have to give the subwoofer a rating of 2 stars because it did perform well during action scenes, but that is the most I can give it. I will never buy KLH speakers again. It wasn't worth the aggravation and added expense in the long run.

Since I see a lot of people complaining about these subs, I just want to make sure people are setting them properly. Before you hook the sub up, slowly turn up the volume on your other 5 channels until they are as loud as they can go without distorting. Then disconnect those speakers and hook the sub up, keeping that volume the same. For the crossover, check the frequency response of the sub, and then set the crossover to slightly lower than that to give it some leeway (like if frequenct response is 20-150hz, set it to 100hz or 125hz) This will minimize distortion from the sub since it won't be trying to play notes that are almost out of it's range. Now with the sub hooked up, start with the gain at minimum, and slowly turn it up as high as you can without it distorting. Turn the volume back down, hook your speakers back up and enjoy. Taking these steps will optimize the quality of sound, and will keep your amp and sub running longer since it won't be overworking itself.

Trouble-free external backup drive.......2007-07-10
I have had a Maxtor One Touch II 300Gb hard drive attached to my Windows XP system for two years. The drive has been completely trouble-free. I use it for backups only; I have Norton Ghost configured to use it for full backups once a week and incrementals three times a day.
My system is on 24 hours a day and the drive has never had a problem. I haven't had to do many file restores, but when I did there were no problems.
Run Do Not Walk! Customer Service Issues!.......2007-04-08
First off, I've been a long-time customer of both Maxtor and Seagate. As of December 2006, they are one and the same.
Regrettably after the unit failed, it took me 4 1/2 months and nearly 20 contacts to finally get a product returned and replaced. This was the worst customer service experience that I have ever had. Ousourced support, indifferent management and a lack of committment to basic customer service principles plague their product support system.
Ultimately, the only way to make it past a support system designed to disuade customers from seeking out an avenue of resolution is to concentrate on the US based corporate communications\Community relations managers.
Until Maxtor\Seagate publicly acknowledges their support issues and makes an effort to resolve them, I cannot endorse their product lines.
Should you have a product and are unable to make it through the escalation tree on the 3rd pass, I'd highly recommend contacting the regional community relations managers off their corpoate website and voice your opinion as well as demand resolution.
Not Reliable.......2007-03-09
I would not recommend this hard drive, or any other Maxtor hard drive. After 1 1/2 years, it died inexplicably, along with all of the pictures, music and data that I stored on it. Customer support is through Seagate, and they said the only option is to pay $50 for them to analyze the problem, and then $500-$2500 to fix it. Thankfully I don't trust these hard drives and had backed up everything to another hard drive (not Maxtor) which still works.
It suddenly crushed. Company's a rip-off regarding warranty.......2007-01-31
I bought the product in May 2006 with a one-year warranty. In July the product crushed and stopped working. I lost all the information stored. I sent the product to Seagate to evaluate data recovery but it was out-of-the-blue damaged beyond recovery. I learned it's a common problem with such devices and many consumers were affected. In August the product was sent back for replacement under warranty. I received the replacement unit in September 2006 while I was out of the country in vacations. When I came back by late October, I tried to install the new drive but it was not working. I contacted Maxtor back in early November for support. They told me the unit was bad. I asked for another replacement and they told me the product was out of warranty. I was perplexed as this was the replacement of a unit that had several months left in warranty. They told me replacement units had only a 30 days warranty. I explained I was out of the country when the product arrived and it was unacceptable. They agreed in sending another unit and to extend a 6-month warranty to honor the warranty period left in the original unit. I sent the unit back fulfilling all the tricky requirements designed to void most claims. Every shipment to and from Maxtor had associated expenses I had to cover. The replacement unit never arrived and when calling to complain, they again are telling me that the replacement unit had only a 30-days warranty that expired a few days before I complained

I never kept my drive on unless I was using it, but it died at six months. I also had a Maxtor 5000 and it died at six months. Think I will try something else next time.

Worked reliably for approx. 18 mos. then click-blink-clink-blink nothin. I expected a lot more life for the price I paid for it at the time (This unit came inside a Lacie FireWire box).
I run a hotrod Mac G4, Big Audio files (Audio Restoration Work) . I Used it for Audio burns ONLY (of course). As for now, I must use my 2 yr old internal Pioneer AO7 DVD for audio; atleast till a replacement is delivered or locally purchased.
For the price, I will give Lite-On another try. Although I'm not Impressed thus far... I'ld give LACIE a 2star, because they should install only the HIGHEST quality in their boxes. Lacie patronizes High End Mac users at premium prices.
Just, good stuff..........2005-09-06
I'm a refugee from a time when the only working parts were from American companies in America. Later, heart broken to find out they were parts from over-seas, but met tight American specifications. Or they were sent back, called -sx models, or Celeron. Everyone knew what junk was before you went to the store. For me then, Lite-On is confusing. It works! They are from Taiwan?! No one in their right mind would buy foreign steel because it's scrap. I have seen and cracked my own cheap socket at no less than 150 foot pounds. No one would buy a Chinese violin because the Italians have it down cold. Right? Wrong. Criticized for their focus on cost, Chinese have been learning from the Italians. Foreign steel makers are buying up all the good steel and re-selling it. I tell you, Lite-On It is another exception. My Best Buy computer came with a Lite-On player. I though the age old stereo-type, junk. Cheapest parts on the block, just to get the box on in the price range. So, this weekend I bought a Mad Dog. I have a CD that was placed on top of another CD and spun/scratched, slightly. It still works fine though. The November 2004 MD-ED56R, Mad Dog Lightning 56x will not read the disk. However, to my surprise, the nearly 4 year old Lite-On It drive will! I'm shocked, choked up, gasping for air, checking the jumpers, cables set-up, another disk...it's the little scratches. Their drive will read other disks, just not this one. If Lite-On IT technology that is 4 years old is superior, what does this say about their products today?! I'm sold and have no problem laying down the money for something that works.
No Sales Receipt with Order.......2004-08-22
I received this drive from Circuit City and there was no sales receipt with the order. I notified Circuit City that I would like a sales receipt in case I needed warranty service. Needless to say I never received it.
Hasta la vista Circuit City--I'll shop elsewhere from now on.
Lite-On Is Write-On!!.......2004-08-01
After my Yamaha EZ3200 bit the dust after a year (run don't walk away from any Yamaha cd-writer....they no longer manufactur cd-writers and will not provide any support for them), I needed a quick replacement. Enter this Lite-On CD-RW. Not only is the cost terrific, but it is was a breeze to install. I've been using this writer and Nero software for about 2 months now. I've just made it through my first 50-pack of cd-rs and have not burned one coaster yet! I would recommend this writer to anyone looking for a effective and inexpensive replacement for their old or burned out cd-writer.

Bought this unit on newegg.com for a much better price. I had an easy install replacing my old cdrom/dvd drive. I was very pleased for two weeks. I only used the thing about four times. About two weeks after installtion I tried to open the tray and it didn't open. I also have a zip drive on the secondary IDE which was also dead. I took the drive out and put my old cd drive in and everything worked again. I emailed liteon support. Ten days later they responded. They gave all the right steps to reinstall, but this unit is dead. I wouldn't buy this one again.

One reviewer claimed this is just a CD-RW drive not a combo drive as advertised. Not so, the SOHC-5232K is a combo drive, but the drive they shipped was not a SOHC-5232K.

Worked as claimed, only problem- there was no accompanying cd burning software with it. But then at the price I got it, it was still worth it. Free udf writing software from HP worked fine with it.
Forgive Amazon, guys.......2004-11-02
I can understand the frustration of other buyers as I had to return the wrong drive twice. My understanding is that what Amazon actually got were just the CD RW drives and the price too fits that category but erroneously they had labeled them as CD RW DVD combos. I am not sure what Office Depot and Circuit City are shipping but their price suggests that they should be shipping the combo. But folks, we need to admit that Amazon is doing a good job and at time things might go wrong since humans do fail at times. It took a while for Amazon to understand the problem and once they knew the problem they removed it from their inventory. The delay in the reordering should be due to the fact that Amazon does not have the combo drives with them. I actually ended up ordering the "SAMSUNG Internal 52x32x52x CD-RW plus DVD-ROM Combo Drive". I haven't tested it properly still but so far I like the drive. I will post my comments under that drive very soon. Again folks, let us accept the fact that Amazon too can err at times and we need to be accommodative. Overall their service and prices and the quality of products are very good.
Absurdly poor service.......2004-10-29
Like many others, I've ordered Amazon numerous times, but this instance was atrocious. Having shipped the wrong item like the other reviewers, I decided to opt for a replacement, only to find that the estimated delivery date would be 2 months from today! What's more surprising is that I can go ahead and order from Office Depot via Amazon.com and receive it in 7 days along with the $15 increase.
Shipped the wrong drive twice.......2004-10-22
Have never had any problems with Amazon before, but this time they kept shipping the wrong drive and now they are refunding the purchase price. I don't want a refund, I want the drive I ordered since they still show it to be in stock. Had problems with Buy.com before and they made everything right - a good retailer. Return shipping was free so that was nice, but still no drive and had the hassle of having to go to UPS drop off twice.
