One reason DVD changers are beginning to win converts is that the machines serve double duty as full-featured CD players. This holds especially true for changers like Toshiba's SD-3205, which boasts accommodations for five discs of either stripe on its rotating lazy-Susan style turntable.

Load her up with music, and this beauty goes on auto-pilot for a whole night. It even automatically detects and decodes High Definition Compatible Discs (HDCD) for added enjoyment when you're listening through the stereo jacks. You can also program it to play favorite tracks from the onboard music discs, do a random play of the loaded lot, and even add or swap out as many as four other discs on the turntable while one remains in play.

DVD changing is a little stickier. With several DVDs installed, this changer went through the motions of ejecting one and starting up the next before we had a chance to load a new title. Most of the time, we had to enter some commands on the remote to get the next feature going.

Rather than trying to load one DVD while another is still in play, a better idea might be to preload a music CD into the changer along with the first DVD. That way the music title will start up automatically when the feature film ends, to keep the atmosphere charged while you're chatting with the gang about the movie you've all just watched.

There is a lot to like about this DVD/CD player. Video performance is quite good, which is to be expected from Toshiba, one of the DVD format's primary architects. You can expect realistic-looking color tones and strong blacks. The picture looked especially clear and crisp through the S-video and component (interlaced) outputs. Naturally, you'll need to have a TV display with S-video or component inputs to enjoy the advantages these formats bring.

Sound is full-bodied from a wide variety of sources. For example, you can tap into both optical and coaxial outputs that carry the pure digital version of the soundtrack for decoding through your audio-video receiver.

A pair of analog jacks carry conventional stereo signals and encoded Dolby Pro-Logic surround tracks. The analog audio jacks also distribute specially decoded versions of stereo discs mastered with the higher-resolution HDCD process. (As a point of reference, HDCD used to be available only in CD players selling for three times the price of this model.) That same stereo pair can also deliver a more encompassing, got-you-surrounded sound from just two speakers when you click on the Spatializer circuit.

In addition, the SD-3205 boasts six (5.1-channel) output jacks for exporting the Dolby Digital soundtrack, which the SD-3205 has already decoded internally. This output set matches perfectly with an inexpensive Dolby Digital-ready receiver.

It should be pointed out, however, that this changer does not internally decode the less-popular Digital Theater Systems (DTS) surround format. To enjoy films and concert discs with DTS, you'll need to get a more elaborate receiver with its own DTS (and Dolby Digital) decoding.

Front-panel controls are minimalist, but the remote control is an absolute pleasure and well laid out. We especially liked the true, four-directional joystick for getting around a DVD's increasingly deep menu of viewing choices. (Those commentary tracks, popping up on an increasing number of special-edition DVDs of late, are a lot of fun to call up the second time you watch a movie.) Once you've landed on a menu selection, just pressing down on the joystick's button top is all that's needed to issue an "enter" command, expediting the order.

There were a couple of minor annoyances that we learned to live with. For one thing, the SD-3205 has a peculiar habit of not letting go of a just-played-disc. When the tray drawer is open and you tap the stop button, then either of the disc-skip buttons (in forward or reverse direction), nothing happens. To get a previously played disc out, we had to first close the drawer, then press stop or one of the other disc select buttons. Then, and only then would the stashed disc be released.

Disc-position numbering on the tray is also illogical. The numbers are embossed in the black plastic material close to the center of the tray, in the shadows, rather than at the perimeter. This makes reading the slot position difficult unless you've got a light shining down directly on the platter.

Aside from these annoyances, the SD-3205 is a worthy entertainer. You can expect good audio-video performance and a lot of flexibility for a modest price.

As an electrical engineer and ex consumer electronics sales/install/service guy I look at a lot when selecting a player. Toshiba is one of the worlds largest and best IC and component manufacturers. If you own consumer electronics, it has Toshiba parts in it. These guys wrote the book and are continuing to pioneer consumer electronics (ahem... ps3). That said, there is also a lot of cheap crap being sold nowadays and consumers are driving the market down into the crapper by shopping at best buy and walmart. you pay less, you get less, and manufacturers are forced to compete by putting less into a player. Consumers think that prices will drop as the technology gets older, in reality the price drops as quality drops. a great dvd player equal to the first generation models is still over $500.
Anyway, I had six years of faithful service from this player. While working for the shop, we had only a handful of Toshiba DVD players come in for service over the years (yes, we were and authorized in-house service center for everything we sold - opened in 1889 - we were the first to sell anything in our market thought the 20th century). Toshiba units like this one have a superior board layout - taking care to keep the good power supply far from sensitive components. They use quality spindle motors. everything is plastic now so like any they are sensitive to abuse.
All DVD and CD players suffer the same fate - optical pickup or spindle motor failure. An optical pickup will fail early if given a poor environment (i.e. dirty, smokey, etc) regardless of manufacturer. I will be replacing mine in this player to give me years of more service.
Due to its age, this unit does not play newer mp3 or video disc formats, but i loved the performance and build. and for the repair price (roughly $30) i am way ahead.
I wrote this review to give Toshiba a fair representation. They are one of the best.

Same Problems.......2004-05-17

I had this unit for about 2 years, and after playing a VCD for the first time, it lost it's mind. Lots of green and red blocks on the screen. After that, I get the (apparently famous) Insert Disk message, and it won't play anything (DVD, CD, VCD, etc). I expect my consumer electronics to last longer than 24 months.

At least received near 3 years of use, but received the famous insert disk error on any CD and DVD. Similar as many reported on numerous sites. Stay away from Toshiba.

Worst electronic purchase ever! Stay away for Toshiba!.......2003-02-11

I had the same problem with this unit that many people have had, Disc Errors, Mech. Errors, you name it, of course all this started a couple months after the one-year warranty. I wrote Toshiba's headquarters and enclosed copies of dozens of complaints from other websites to ask them if they considered this a known problem. I will not pay for repair of product where dozens, probably hundreds of people are having the same trouble. Anyway, they called two weeks later and said there was nothing they can do. Well, I figured out how to (sometimes) get the disk to play; bang the DVD player up and down very hard and loudly, about ten times, and you might get the LOADIING message. Soon I will chuck this p.o.s. over the balcony after burning $... and never buy ANYTHING from Toshiba.

Insert Disk Error!!!.......2003-01-03

This player started out working fine, however about about one year of use, it would not reconize disks. This is the same problem that many others reported. I took mine apart and found that a cable on the top of the laser unit tends to generate a bad connection (back middle). If I disconnect it and reconnect it, I was able to get the unit to play for another year before the cable became hosed from reconnecting time and time again. I purchased another one from e-bay, with the same problem, but I could only get this one to work for a few weeks! Perhaps if I can buy a pack of these cables, I can keep mine working for a little longer before I can purchase a better one.

Nearly impossible to use without remote. Goes bad after about one year, or earlier.

Lemon, I have two and they both went bad. Both manufactured April 2000!

Great adapter.. driver update is a little hard to find.......2006-06-28

Love the adapter. I got this about 3 years back and it is still running solid. I downloaded a driver update at some point that migrated me from Widcomm 1.1 software to the next version. This added more BT profiles and is also way more stable. Once in a while I see a error message from windows sayng that it is 'unable to start Bluetooth stack' or something like that right after booting up. I'd have to reboot to get bluetooth working again. So there are some minor software issues with windows. But not that big of an annoyance.

Does not work!.......2004-10-21

The device has issues. Windows drivers are old from 2002.
It is not waking up after hibernation.
I had issues when I use with Bluetooth headset.
Not recommended.

Buying my second.......2004-08-01

Bluetooth isn't for everybody. You have to understand which devices provide what services, how to discover device, and how to pair devices. It isn't like the wireless ethernet stuff that you buy and it just runs out of the box. Once you conquer it though it is just too cool.

My wife is a mobile network. She has her bluetooth enabled cellphone, bluetooth earbud for the phone, and bluetooth pda. We have a hawking bluetooth usb adapter connected to the computer at home. So, with this, my wife can do hands free calls with her cell phone with no wires... she can even be up to 30 feet from the phone and still talking on it with her earbud. She can surf the internet with Internet Explorer with her IPaq PDA through GPRS on her cellphone (up to 115 Kbps for free on t-mobile) and of course get her email on her IPaq instead of using the keyboard interface on her telephone she is using Windows 2003 Mobile. She is also able to synch her pda and phone using the bluetooth so she doesn't have to hook it up with the usb cable.

We're getting the second adapter now because she has gotten a laptop. She can now carry her laptop and get the same surfing capabilities and so on using the bluetooth and the phone's communications abilities.

Bottom line is that the investment of thirty bucks and the time to figure out how to make this thing to work can really be worth while if it is what you need. You'd have a hard time taking my bluetooth away from me!

Just alright: Bluetooth is not ready for primetime........2004-05-22

I wasn't too impressed with this dongle, which is why I turned around and sold it. Bottomline: it installed simply in WinXP, and did connect to my Palm Tungsten successfully. But Bluetooth is just not ready for prime time. Which I suppose is not the fault of this HT adapter, but the fault of the IEEE. However, as far as this product goes, the software worked very well and the signal strength in my apartment was always good. The constant need to validate connection on both the handheld and the PC was the deal breaker for me. If I'm 25 feet away and want to access an email or webpage, it's a massive pain in the backside to have to get up and walk over to the computer in order to accept the BT connection. And it entirely defeats the purpose of having a wireless device in the first place!

New driver on CD works with Nokia 3650 but will expire.......2004-04-16

I bought the dongle to use with my nokia 3650. The supplied driver version is 1.4.2.10. The setup took minutes and it worked fine on both Windows XP professional and Win98SE desktops. However, within a few weeks, the drivers stops working, prompting "Bluetooth license check failed." Hawkings support has not returned my emails after two weeks.
