1 out of 5 stars Costly Mistake.......2006-08-29

Worst TV ever....
The set came highly recommended and for the first two years put out a beautiful picture... then, out of the blue we couldn't turn it on... It kept turning itself off. Tried to do a reset by unplugging it for the night to no avail. This unit cost us 2700 2.5 years ago and they want another $800 to repair it. It's just not worth it. I am very dissapointed in Hitachi and most likely will NOT purchase another Hitachi product. I work too hard for my money to be wasting $1000 a year for a TV that doesn't last. And, if you work hard for your money too, take my advise... Stay away from Hitachi.

4 out of 5 stars Great TV, excellent connections, Nice R/C.......2005-02-04

Purchase from Amazon in Feb 2003, delivered by truck (took about a week) and they set it up for no additional charge...

Worked perfect for 6 months -- then suddently stopped working one night [~ 2:00 am when I had fallen asleep watching it :)]. Called Hitachi and they found someone who would service it (most I called did not want to come to my location as I'm 35 miles outside of Chicago). The service people contacted me - came out, diagnosed the problem ("jungle" chip) and left. 2 weeks later came back out, fixed it (no charge) and it's been fine ever since.

Picture is still fantastic, service is excellent and despite my angst over it not working for a bit has been an excellent TV. I would recommend an extended warranty however.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent TV, with an excellent price........2004-01-02

This is by far the best thing that I have ever purchased. Anyways, it is an outstanding TV, with a great picture, lots of input jacks for stuff, and by far the best price tag for the quality.

UPDATE!!
After one year of use this TV is out of comission. I turn the set on and instantly the screen turns blue, white, then shuts off. Thank god for the warranty. I will update again once it's fixed.

5 out of 5 stars Super sharp with DVDs.......2003-05-08

I had been looking at projection TVs for 3 years and never saw anything in the showrooms that I couldn't live without - until I wandered into Circuit City at the Holyoke Mall. There I saw the Hitachi 51UWX - the picture was spectacular. CC delivered it to me in Vermont (free delivery - with 3 ft of snow on the ground) and set it up. It's been 'Cinema Nirvana' ever since. The key feature is the ability to manually sharpen the image at 117 points on the screen - the result is a sharper image (from DVDs) than any first-run movie theater can provide. If you're a film afficianado - this is the machine.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be happier.......2003-04-26

This is my first purchase of an Hitachi product and I have to say I am very pleased. Sony was the first HDTV I looked at but two things changed my mind. First the 'flicker' problem associated with Sony projection TV's. Their tube televisions are peerless but over and over I came across comments about the development of flicker and a green cast on the picture after even 3 months of use. Then I saw the TV's side by side at Circuit City. That clinched it. The color and definition of the Hitachi were, to me, superior. One caveat...normal cable looks less than great on this TV. I have digital TV with HDTV channels and it's amazing. I cannot say how a picture from an antenna would look. But before the Cable company hooked up my HDTV box, the pic on the HItachi wasn't as good as the picture on my father's 3 year old Mitsubishi. However, with both tv's attached to HDTV cable, the HItachi is superior.

4 out of 5 stars And the winner is...Hitachi.......2003-05-27

Deciding on a big screen has definitely been a grueling and frustrating task. I have been looking for a Projection HDTV for almost a year now. I never wanted to spend more than 2,000 so I waited till now to actually buy one. There are so many models out there and once you start doing your research many of the contenders will drop out of contention. When I first started looking, I considered every brand and model and went from there. Deciding on what you want can really narrow down your search. First decide on whether you want standard or widescreen. I think there is no clear answer for this and its more of a preference. I myself went withthis standard screen because I do mostly TV watching with occasional DVD viewing. Remember if you buy a widescreen when you are watching TV there will be bars on the sides. Go to a store and ask them to show this to you on a Widescreen, you have to see it to decide whether you can live with it or not. Many people say that Widescreen is the future especially with HD on the horizon, but I'm not so sure its coming as soon as more people think. Yes there are some channels now offered in HD, but not enough in my opinion. With cable and satellite systems offering hundreds of channels, I did not want to invest in a widescreen just for a few channels. I think it is coming but in my opinion by the time HD broadcasts have reached a substantial level (about 5-7 years or maybe longer) then sure it will be worth it to get it then. My logic is that I will get a Widescreen HDTV in a few years and by then maybe I plasmas will become affordable or if not I could get a really nice projection widescreen HDTV. I could go on but now I'll get to the TV.

I think picture is the most important thing when buying a big screen. I would rather have a 42 inch with a great picture than a 52 inch with a so so picture. The picture on this TV is the best in my opinon. The Toshiba 50 inch H72 which comes in standard and widescreen is the only TV that comes close to this one. The few other competitors that I was considering such as the the Sony and Phillips had ok pictures but not as good as this one in my opinion. I really did not like any of the Panasonic TV's they didn't look like they were worth it even though they were a little cheaper. My advise is not too skimp, I understand how budgets are tight but don't buy a lesser TV just to save yourself a few bucks. This is a multiyear investment and evey buck helps you. I also have to say this by the way. One thing that really confused me was how I would read all these different reviews for different TV's and everyone would practically swear that they had the best picture. I think there is no "best" picture. It really depends on so many things such as the source that is being watched, the lighting, the angle, the calibration, and a whole bunch of other things that make it difficult to buy the "best" TV. And remember that the sales people ...can easily manipulate the picture. They can easily make a great TV look [bad] wih just a few presses of a button. Keep that in mind and when you go to look at TV's ask them to show you the TV with different sources such as TV, DVD, and HD if available. Sometimes you can tell that they have messed with the TV's by just checking the brightness and contrast. I apologize for giving more shopping tips than I have on this actual TV.

I chose this TV because it consistently looked the best at five different store. Hitachi consistently gets better technical ratings and has the best lens for this type of TV. They manufacture their own parts and have some of the best display technology in the business. One thing that really helped me was that I look through at the "Consumer Reports" analysis on HDTV's and this TV was very highly recommended. Unlike many of the editorial reviews on other websites, Consumer Reports does no advertising and really puts the products to the test. I also really like this TV because of its flexibility and options. There are plenty of inputs and you can adust many of the setting including aspect ratio, temperature, utilize BBE, and the on screen display is very easy. I don't know why some companies make their controls so hard to use. The remote control for this TV is ok, but nothing spectacular. To be honest, I really didn't pay much attention to the remotes when I was researching. I obviously did check them out but its one of the least important thngs in my opinion especially since they all perform the same basic function.

DVD's look beautiful on this TV and in combination with a good home theater system, say good bye to Loews and say hello to Blockbuster. And remember don't freak out if you open the box, plug in the TV, and it doesn't look perfect, this TV's need a lot of adjusting and many manufacturers suggest the best picture that these TV's can produce will be evident after about a hundred hours, this give the guns a chance to warm up and spread their wings for lack of a better term.

Finally, I know this is a hard decision and I hope my review has helpd you somewhat. Just remember to do your homework, don't rush it, look for prices online and in stores, and don't forget to buy an extended warranty-you'll need it at some point. Last thing, buy premium cables-like Monster.

          Tech Talk
Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Standard television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television will have either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, which is widescreen and appears rectangular, looking more like a movie screen and filling more of the viewer's field of vision for a more lifelike viewing experience.

Scanning method: Frames of video are made up of many lines of video that are scanned onto a television screen so closely they appear to be a solid picture. The scanning method can be either interlaced or progressive. Interlaced scanning (also used in today's analog TV), indicated by an "i" in the video format, fills in the odd number lines (1,3,5,7...) and then fills in the even number lines (2,4,6,8...) until the frame is complete. Progressive scanning, "p," fills in each line consecutively until the frame is complete, like a computer display.

          1 out of 5 stars Don't buy a Hitachi HDTV.......2006-01-31

We have had this TV for three years. Two days ago red swirl lines appeared across the screen. It is impossible to get someone to come and take a look at the TV and Hitachi customer service was no help. After reading other comments from customers, it is clear that other Hitachi customers are having the same issues. We spent 2 grand on this TV and are extremely disappointed and will never buy another Hitachi.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD GOING BAD.......2005-03-23

3 years of good service, convergence issues, now 2 output amps
are out. Green starts in lower left and right ok, then is two
inches above in middle of screen, like a small curve, service tech says these last 2 - 5 years before amps go out. I've
got nearly $300 in repairs and still not fixed yet. Paid 2 grand new.

          4 out of 5 stars Great TV.......2004-02-06

I have had the tv for about 6 months now. It has a great picture! I generally use my surround sound when it is on. I have Dish Network HDTV and get some local channels that broadcast in HDTV too thanks to the 811 receiver. You will never go back to "regular" tv again.

3 out of 5 stars Good But Shows Some Flaws.......2003-04-16

I've owned this HDTV for 1 year and 6 months. I won't get into too many details about the TV's specifications. The picture is good; the sound is good; and there's a smorgasbord of customization features.

Now let me describe the three problems I have with it:

My model comes with a plastic cover over the screen which causes some glare from light sources. This cover cannot be removed without taking the TV apart. Newer models of the same TV don't have the cover, so this may not apply to all prospective buyers.

After using the TV for a while I noticed these curved black lines across the middle of the screen. They're largest at the edges of the screen and get smaller as they approach the center until they're nonexistent. They're always there but aren't easily visible. I was practically looking for imperfections before I saw them and they're unnoticeable against dark images.

Finally, there seems to be something wrong with the color. I don't know if this is a growing problem or if it's been there all along. The bottom-left corner of the screen has a blue shift to it and the top-right corner has a red shift. It's as if the red & blue color convergence is out of adjustment. Manually changing said convergence doesn't help much. It might've always been like that and I just didn't notice before, I don't know.

These two problems may simply be flukes to which only my TV suffers. Also, keep in mind that I am a videophile perfectionist and my reviews for such products are strict.

The SWX series 57SWX20B offers a superb blend of unequalled performance, user convenience, and contemporary styling. By coordinating the design of all key components from source to screen, Hitachi delivers ultrabright, razor-sharp rendering of both high-definition and conventional programming. The set's AV NET user interface provides onscreen control and operation of external system components, such as DVD players, VCRs, and audio-video receivers. And a DVI digital input even accommodates newer-generation digital high-definition set-top boxes (a set-top box or separate HDTV tuner is required to enjoy full HD programming).

The set's 16:9 aspect ratio is perfect for cinematic widescreen viewing, and its hybrid wide-neck CRT and Super Contrast lens system are optimized for HDTV-level programming. Conventional TV and video sources will look better, too, with Hitachi's Enhanced VirtualHD digital video processing, which upgrades conventional signals to near-HD quality. An antireflective screen shield ensures smooth, even light distribution and wide viewing angles. Magic Focus convergence automatically aligns the picture for optimal performance at the touch of a button, and 3:2 correction/26-point motion-adaptive interpolation ensures smooth, seamless images.

5 out of 5 stars Great Home Theater.......2003-07-04

I purchased my Hitachi after doing several comparisons. The fact that Hitachi makes their own components is a huge reason their TVs are the best. They have control over the entire process of building the sets.
DVDs are simply fantastic. My DVD/Home Theater system is not a progressive scan system yet I would challenge anyone to notice the difference. Cable is acceptable and usually depends on the signal quality which determins how good the picture is for analog. VHS tapes are okay but I can hardly wait til I can go DVD recording and dump my VCR( after I transfer my tapes to DVDs). Sound is also VERY good. All in all I'm extremely pleased with the set.

          5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2003-01-17

It was between this one and the Sony V600 model. Lucky for us we were able to compare them side by side at a local store and Hitachi was clearly the winner. Every type of signal was compared and the only signal that looked better on the Sony was the air antenna. When we received it, the picture did not seem as good as it did on the showroom floor, but after reading the manual and making some adjustments the picture was terrific, even on analog cable!

            1 out of 5 stars very unhappy.......2005-11-04

I have this tv and the picture quality is great. One exception.
in two and a half years I had to change the crt's twice. I had "screen burn". Hitachi does not back them up at all. I never played vidio games or put up pictures from a camera. I was told the instant you turn the set onyou start the procces no matter how long you leave the set on. Just normal watching constitue misue and Hitachi would not cover the repair. Why would I spend this kind of money to watch tv and it be concidered misuse. Thats what I bought the tv for watching.

5 out of 5 stars seeing is believing.......2004-03-08

this tv has the best picture of any projection tv i have ever seen, and give many a tube tv a run for the show as well. i have seen alot of them, as i deliver for a tv and appliance store. the price i paid for this item is unbelievable as well. so needless to say i am a very happy hatachi watcher. dvd quality is out of this world, i have pioneer 600 watt surround sound w/5 disc changer hooked up through red blue green on both units. just switched from cable (clear picture aint so clear) to direct tv the picture from direct is much much better. when not using the pioneer, the sound still sounds good from the hitachi. even though i got a tremendous deal it is well worth the regular price.

5 out of 5 stars Best Rear Projection Available.......2003-01-12

Bought this HDTV in early December 2002. Prices have gone UP since. We are very happy with this unit.

DVD progressive-scan picture quality is flawless. I challenge anyone to see more detail in a film like "The Last of the Blonde Bombshells" (an HBO film shot with HD equipment): I can safely describe every scene as of "photographic quality". "Shrek", "Matrix", "Moulin Rouge", and "Moonstruck" are also fantastic.

UPDATED Sept 2004: The (cable box) HD picture we see from home is fantastic. "Pinch me, is this real?" HBO is best, then HD1, then NBC, then CBS, then ABC.

Lets face it, if you spend this much on a large screen TV, you will want to fill the screen edge to edge, and the six aspect-ratio settings let you do just that. We choose 16:9 (1.85:1 "widescreen") viewing most of the time. Breathtaking stuff!

When you watch 4:3 images (1.33:1 "full screen") you can expand the image to fill the screen, but the distortion bothers me. So we mostly watch those at the "Zoom1" setting, which provides an edge-to-edge viewing experience with some cropping. I prefer cropping to the grey or black bars that otherwise frame the image.

Compared this 51" to the 57" Hitachi and was surprised that the 57" picture quality was better, considering it uses the same elements. I thought that picture would be grainy or washed out, but it was also superb. However I could not justify the additional cost - and this 51" screen fits our basement viewing area well.

I am very happy with this HDTV watching 50/50 DVD and satellite TV, but I am hunting for the best HD receiver to complete our video experience.

For sound, we use an RCA 700W surround system. Despite small satellite speakers, the sound is incredible large, thanks to a large subwoofer. The Hitachi's 40W speakers provide good sound, though, and we usually set the volume at 50% while watching movies. They fill in nicely in the mid to high-range frequencies.

I strongly recommend this set and challenge anyone to find a better quality image for the money.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-12-29

I am very impressed with this set. In comparing the quality of the picture with other manufacturers the picture far exceeded their capabilities. This set far exceeded my expectations and I am happy I bought it. It is even better than I thought it would be by seeing it in the store.

            5 out of 5 stars Hitachi.......2002-12-09

I checked other systems and frankly this one was the clearest picture of all. Expansions capabilities are also quite diversed. One negative side is that the input ports are low (close to the floor) thus needing longer cables than otherwise needed. Asides from that, overall a 5 star.
