Customer Reviews:
1080P WITH GREAT PICTURE FOR A GREAT PRICE.......2007-09-11
I bought this TV at Circuit City for $999.00. Sure there may be better Plasma TV's but this thing is awesome. I use it with with DishNetwork HD. The picture is stunning, the sound is excellent and the setup and remote contol is easy. This is my second big screen Hitachi. I've had great success. I love my HD!!!! Hope this helps.
GREAT product for GREAT price.......2007-09-06
My husband researched and had me return a different plasma tv. We went with this because it was a good price and had free shipping. It arrived and because we weren't ready to install, the shipping co left the tv in the box (normally they'll unpack take packaging) Of course always check for price drops within your 30 days, I did and saved an additional $250
The picture quality with our regular DVD player is great. I have not yet switched my Directv to high def, but picture is still better than our old projection style tv.
Bargain 42" Plasma.......2007-08-26
Ordered this TV set through Amazon. Arrived quickly; in fact four days before the estimated delivery. Picture is amazing. Easy to set-up, although reading the manual is required. While the picture quality is not quite like that of the higher cost Panasonic (blacks in particular), the average user will have little to complain about. The number of features and conveniences offered in this set make it appealing to either the average or the very serious viewer.
Very pleased with the bargain price Amazon provided on this model. Same sets are selling for $400 to $500 in retail outlets. Delivery by Eagle was quick and included unpacking and hauling away packing materials.
Recommend this set to anyone interested in a plasma TV with numerous features and connectivity, and high quality picture.
Will add a 5.1 surround sound system to enhance the entertainment value of this TV.
Picture quality is not as clear and sound could be better.......2007-08-23
Well, the only thing I have to say is that I'm really sorry that I did not repurchase the 42HDS69 like I originally had before it was stolen. I thought I would get the same quality of picture and sound from this model, but not the case. Believe me, the quality of picture on this model is not as crisp as it was on the 42HDS69. Also, someone told me that the volume/sound coming from the bottom speaker of the plasma tvs was suppose to be better than the volume/sound coming from the speakers on the side. Not true. I liked the sound from the side speakers better. I now have to add more speakers to this model to get the quality of sound I'm accustomed to. As for the poor quality of picture, I guess I'll have to live with that too or sell this one and purchase another one. In a nutshell, I'm truly disappointed with this purchase.
DON'T BUY HITACHI!!!.......2007-08-20
BUY A SHARP AQUOS LCD - THEY ARE MY NEW, FIRST RECOMMEND! If I could do it over again I would!
Let me begin by saying that I'm a technophile - work at Google currently - have worked at Oracle and Microsoft previously... I know technology!
I bought this particular set because of its features and technology... however; it broke 3 months after purchase! After some very annoying back and forth with first line Hitachi customer support, an "authorized Hitachi repair person" came and took my Plasma away - this was near 4 WEEKS AGO, and counting. I have been without ANY TV for near 4 weeks! Buy "authorized Hitachi repair person" I mean some guy - no uniform, loaded my Hitachi in the back of an unmarked, open pickup truck - and left me with some generic service repair ticket.
Customer service is completely inept, uncaring, and without any authority to assist. Its borderline criminal - I originally went with a name brand to avoid this very thing. There is definitively no CARE in Hitachi Customer Care.
Someone at Hitachi viewing this can view my support ticket by last name: Greene, and Zip 94103.
ADVICE: DON'T BUY HITACHI!

Amazon.com Product Description
Get the most out of your high-definition plasma television purchase with the 42-inch Hitachi 42HDS69, which offers a wealth of advanced technological features that will ensure superior picture and audio performance for years to come. Its blend of refined aesthetics is ideal for any home while its fully high-definition display--with 1080 vertical lines of interlaced resolution--provides stunningly vivid and colorful entertainment. The set's built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner pulls HD signals (480p/720p/1080i) right from the airwaves, and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. The set's CableCARD port means the set will also receive digital cable television systems services directly from a compatible cable operator without requiring a bulky, external cable box. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. It comes with a manual swivel tabletop stand.
Plasma display technology offers the widest viewing angle of any type of television. The wide viewing angle makes plasma the ultimate choice for wall mounted television. Plasma television performance is also exceptional for producing high quality images of fast motion content, like sports programming.
Hitachi's original ALiS (Alternate Lighting of Surfaces) technology minimizes the barriers between picture elements or pixels to deliver a smoother, more film-like picture. Using more than one million pixels, ALiS can reproduce more detail than any plasma in its class. ALiS is also unique in that it is designed to match closely to the 1080i HDTV system for a sharp, smooth and seamless image.
This set's video is powered by the PictureMaster HD III processing technology, which features third-generation 1080p processing and new histogram processing for enhanced contrast, sharpness, and color for a clearer, sharper picture. It also offers extended color capabilities to reproduce the purest reds, greens and blues, a maximum 16-bit/281 trillion color capability, and a 16 percent brighter panel.
The 4 MB, 10-bit digital 3D Y/C comb filter separates brightness and color signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-color, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. It performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the color from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl, resulting in a razor sharp image. This set also performs automatic 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.
The 42HDS69 has a 1024 x 1080-pixel resolution, three color temperature settings, four-step black enhancement, multiple aspect ratio formats (four HD, six SD), and split-screen/picture-in-picture functionality. The anti-reflective, high-contrast screen effectively absorbs ambient room light, reducing reflections and producing richer blacks, vibrant color and increased detail in shadows and highlights. Other convenience features include on/sleep timers, closed caption decoder, V-Chip parental controls, several screensavers, and three-language on-screen display (English, French, Spanish).
It has a three-way, 36-watt speaker system that can produce simulated surround sound and a bass boost. The set can also be used as a center-channel speaker in a full surround sound system. It includes the following video and audio connections:
- Composite A/V: 4 rear, 1 side
- S-Video: 2 rear
- Component Video: 2 rear, 1 side
- HDMI: 2 rear, 1 side
- RF: 1
- Digital audio output: 1 optical
Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

poor quality.......2007-08-20
Only 11 month into usage, this TV developed a 3 inch red strip along left side of screen on all input signals. This pretty much renders the TV useless. Even before this, the TV has excessive audio buzzing noise. I have tolerated for almost a year. Definitely will never buy another Hitachi product.
Don't buy Hitachi!.......2007-06-28
My Hitachi HDTV is still broken after 4 repair attempts. Phone support flat out lies to me telling me they don't offer refund or exchange. After escalating it to her supervisor, got him to admit that exchange is an option. Now waiting for them to call me back with their decision. Not holding my breath.
Simply Gorgeous.......2007-06-22
It has been more than a month now, since my wife and I purchased this tv. Let me tell you... It is a amazing. We have a near-500 dvd movie library, and this television is amply the centerpiece of the livingroom.
We first noticed it at the local PX (as I am military), in the electronics department. Of all the hd lcd's and plasmas there, THIS model drew "the crowd." It's not just the sleek design, it's all in the picture. CRYSTAL CLEAR. I mean CRYSTAL CLEAR! The brightness was amazing too. When you think of high-definition, it's tv's like this one that come to mind.
It has many, many perks, but one of my many favorite features is the VIEW FROM BEHIND! Yes, it has soooo many different connections and it can support. It is because of this tv, that my wife and I decided to completely upgrade our home theater system. The back of the system clearly shows you that it is a system you can build on. (From conventional rca, to s-video, to component, to hdmi...and we are talking about multiple connections for each)
You definitely get your money's worth.
AWESOME TELEVISION.......2007-05-25
I wanted to buy a plasma screen for my husband has a surprise, so I did a lot of research. The Hitachi Ultravision received the best reviews overall. My husband couldn't be happier. The picture is stunning. One thing I noticed, as with all TVs, the closer you get, the fuzzy the picture gets. I wouldn't view this set or any other set closer than five or six feet. Ours is in our workout room in front of the eliptical machine which is about six feet away from the set. The picture is fantastic. Delivery was a breeze and fast. The gentleman who delivered the set made sure that I checked the item for any cracks or defects. He was extremely helpful. I bought the two year warranty with this and the suggested wall mount. My husband said the wall mount was easy to install.

Customer Reviews:
Satisfied but puzzled.......2007-01-19
I am totally pleased with the Plasma HDTV. I am electronically challenged so I did not set it up at all, the TV deliever people and the Cable company. But I have a question for the owners: I get a 1080i display on the screen that wants a response yes or no when I turn it on or change from HD to digital. If I ignore it it goes away, but there should be a way to answer only once. Anyone know what I should do?
Buyer Beware!!.......2006-05-27
The monitor out jacks on this TV do not output audio signals when the video inputs are high quality (HDMI or component video). Therefore you must buy an additional audio receiver to use external speakers with this TV, if you want HDTV. This is not explained in their product literature, nor is it well known by their distributors. This info appears near the end of their trouble shooting guide, so beware this will be a shock if you're used to hooking up standard TVs.
Uncompromising, as long as the features suit you.......2006-04-21
If you are buying HD for a single quality -- i.e., picture quality -- then I'm not sure why you'd go any further after you see the picture on this unit. Unless, of course, you are one of those rare consumers who can see beyond what everyone else sees into some other realm of discernment. Then you might continue your quest for happiness elsewhere.
The look is sleek, high-end no-frills brushed metal deep blue-black. No built in strobe lights, no dashing/slashing/curing chrome strips, no gun ports. Just a discrete reference to the brand.
This TV operates essentially like other TVs. I've installed it as part of a wall-mounted home theater arrangement, with all cabling and external speakers concealed in the walls. So the hookup features of the 42HDS52 were particularly appealing. Everything (a full complement of antenna, set-top-boxes, audio, and video inputs, as well as outputs for external speaker systems) is concealed behind the unit except for a limited set of side inputs -- Input 5 (i.e., one for a USB device like a still camera and another for a composite video/S-video/audio input like a video cam or an iPod) on the left side recessed panel. On the right side is a set of external button switches for operating on/off, volume, channel external to the included remote.
At the time I bought, I really wanted simply a monitor -- no speakers, no tuner(s). I bought the HDS because it had an HDMI input, which I thought was mandatory. Therefore, I've never used the tuner or speakers in this device.
I also haven't used the remote control except for initial setup, so I won't comment on it. I spent some extra dough on a third-party programmable remote. BTW, if you're thinking about an A/V receiver-driven home theater setup for the first time, seriously consider a highly-featured third-party remote. All of the so-called universal remotes that come with your electronic devices will leave you ultimately disappointed. Compounding your frustration will be the inevitable flotilla of remotes on the coffee table. This caution is especially valid if you have someone in your household or extended family of casual users who is in any way daunted by change or technology. If you're technology oriented yourself, you'll end up using your computer to customize the crap out of the programmable remote. Even if you don't take this self-customizing step, you won't regret the purchase of the remote and you'll never go back. End of digression.
The rear panel of the Hitachi is replete with inputs that bring the total to five, including an HDMI hole. My hookup uses only the HDMI input that comes from a big honkin' Denon A/V receiver.
The Hitachi has a number of nice features, including a great picture-in-picture, powered side speakers (I haven't heard them in action), 1080i screen, screen saver, on-screen display, and a slick remotely controlled rotating stand (removable for on-wall installation) that rotates + or - 30 degrees.
However, its main draw is the picture, provided by a gazillion teeny-tiny pixels that help ensure that Hitachi's stellar reputation in plasma screens does not go down in flames with this unit. After five months of living with the Hitachi, my wife and I still marvel aloud when something designed for HD flashes to breathtakingly brilliant life on the screen.
When I took delivery of the device (early January), the street price was about $3K. I've seen it now about 5 months later at less than $2.2K. By the time this review goes online, they could be giving them away. Who knows.
For my money, the best test isn't whether you'd recommend it to a friend. It's whether you'd buy it again. I would.

couch surfin.......2005-11-08
Very happy with this HDTV :) After looking at the consumer reports I went shopping for the top rated Panasonic, soon to find out that the Hitachi's have higher resolution, 1024i x 1024i. The Panasonic set are 720p. From what I was told, this puts Hitachi and others like Pioneer in a true HD classification and were not reviewed this year as in the previous year report where they were at the top of the list. Value priced, picture in a picture, 60,000 hour lamp rating made this set the choice for me. The over the air signals from PBS and 13 other Seattle area digital channels are incredible and free with a set top Terk TV5 antenna. I have a surround receiver so the sound quality is not a factor for me.

Customer Reviews:
Wow. I LOVE this tv.......2007-09-11
I love this TV. Picture is one of the best on the market.
What I love:
Picture quality: The picture is crisp, clear, bright, and just perfect. I looked at a couple other plasmas and a couple DLP's and LCD's and I just felt this one was the best in this size range.
Features: I love the swivel stand. My apartment has a huge window and being able to swivel the stand just a inch or so can make a big difference with glare.
Remote: The remote is easy to use, I like the way it lights up, I like the scroll for the volume. I do not use the channel scroll because of my Time Warner cable box remote but I imagine that would not be as easy to use as the volume would be.
Looks: Except for the little silver strip on the top and bottom I think the TV is great looking. And even that is not bad.
Price: For $1,799 (price paid at HHGregg with 0% for 12 months) it is an amazing value.
Aspect ratio: I do now know why but not all HDTVs have the aspect ratio. They just have like a zoom button with a few different levels. A friend has a LCD 42 that has that feature and I hate it. The 42HDT79 has 4:3 zoom, 16:9, 16:9 zoom, and a few others. I just like being to readjust the screen ratio easily and properly as I switch between HD channels and regular digital channels.
HDMI Inputs: This TV has 3. When I bought this in March (I think, maybe Feb.) most on the market in this range only had 2. I have a HD DVD player, PS3, and my cable box so I need at least 3.
Inputs: On top of the three HDMI inputs I use I also have a Wii and occasionally an Xbox 360 so the 5 total inputs, plus a separate line for wall cable and a photo input come in handy.
TV Guide: I really like the built in TV guide. The first month or two I had this tv I used basic cable and this TV guide is great. It is better than satellites and basic cables. The digital cables I use now but I still love that feature.
Customer Service: I have only had to call Hitachi customer service once and while the wait was long (30-40 mins) once someone was on the phone he was helpful, polite, and friendly. One can not ask for much more than that.
What I do not like:
Sound: This would definitely be the one glaring weak spot. Most of my fiends with 42 TVs also have bad sound systems in them. And I understand the main purpose is a great picture but I was a little disappointed. I am working on buying a decent surround system for my apartment but still.
PIP: I love that it has PIP (picture in picture), especially during football season. I hate that it requires a second tuner. I feel that should have been included.
Very few cons compared to a lot of pros. And there probably are more. I will probably pick up one or two when watching it tonight that I forgot right now. Either way I love it and have been contemplating buying another just like it for the bedroom. I am torn between that an 57 DLP just because I wont need as many features (but will need TV guide since bedroom has basic cable so that will be a must) and the value of a DLP for that situation.
This is a great TV.......2007-01-25
I got this TV because I got a great deal on it. It was not in my list of choices due to the fact that it was more expensive than my budget. Thankfully the other two sets I was looking at were not in stock, and ultimatly I was offered this model for 1,501. I have wanted a flat panel since they were 10-16k. I have followed trends and prices every since. When my 10yo tube died, and it came time to buy I figured it was time for a flat panel. My suggestion to people when shopping is to go look at the TV and PLAY WITH IT. Try different settings. If the salesperson gives you [...] then go somewhere else. Do NOT rely on people like Consumer Reports, or other review types. People precieve color different than others. What looks good to one may not look as good to another. For me the Hitachi is simply the best to my eyes. The connections they give are great. The remote is nice, however unlike others I don't revolve my life around a remote. Yes I have acctually seen people bag a TV because of the remote. If you read the features of this TV then compare with what is considered to be the best, or TV's in the same price range you will find the Hictachi is feature rich. The only thing I would like to see from these Manufacturers is built in DVR. As small as large capacity storage is getting this could be done, and we could all loose one box from our systems.
This TV has an in depth color setup, and 3 levels of black enhancement. It also sports three HDMI connections (two in back one one the side). The upper level menu functions are available from the TV panel such as changing the channel, and menu functions. There are 3 screen savers (user selectible) to be used to help with IR. The TV is cable card ready so if your provider has this say goodbuy to the 'ol cable box. In my area if I use the cable card I save $13 a month buy getting rid of the box as the card is only $1.50 a month. You still get all of the HD and programming just without the box. The overall picture is great on this TV. HD is nothing less than awesome. SD is great on some, not so great on other channels. The not so great I blame on systems outside my TV. I had to call support because I broke my remote the second day I had the TV. After going through some steps with the support tech we found the remote was bad. They sent one to me 2nd day air no charge, no questions. THAT is service....oh did I mention I spent more time getting through the automated menu on the phone then did waiting for a tech to answer? Not that the automated menu was long, they were just THAT fast getting me connected to a live AMERICAN ENGLISH SPEAKING person....did you hear that DELL, HP, and etc.....go buy this TV.
Better than our Panasonic or Sony- especially movies!!!.......2007-01-18
We have had the Hitachi for a little over a month. Our two other HDTVs are a 42" Sony LCD rear-projection and a Panasonic 32" LCD which we have owned (and loved!) for 14 months and a year respectively. For sports, it is a very close match between the three - I may prefer the Panasonic just a smidge but it is in a very small (and darker!) room. For broadcast TV we like all three but this one (the Hitachi) wins for reasons of flexibility and a far superior remote (imho). A lower model (the 69) was rated highly in, well, you know, but below the Pani but this model has a 16 bit processor (and picture was roughly equal with the reviewed 12 bit) and thus a superior picture and features. The case we found to be far superior for viewing purposes. We couldn't find an angle, for example, to view the Pani where glare wasn't obvious- on this one we have to TRY to find any glare. Our kicthen/dining area is directly behind us and has the brightest lights and 3 large windows. We don't see much if any glare even on sunny days (we have the set tilted down about 10-degrees from vertical on a wall mount and that helps). But the real selling point is the adjustability of the picture/color and how this set performs on movies. I teach film classes at least a few times per year at our college and I watch a LOT of movies (tough job but . . .). :) The subtlety and superiority of the picture on dvd, up-converted dvd, or HD-DVD are all very obvious (two pair of 52 and 60 year old eyes agree with this assessment). HDTV is also superior though HDTV looks so good, relatively speaking, that it is harder to tell under our viewing conditions and with present conditions (DirectTV and off-sat reception). It also doesn't seem to get nearly as hot as some reports and I've had no problem what-so-ever with "odd" greens as reported on a few blog sites. Having so much experience with LCDs before it did take our eyes a few days to adjust to the greater and more subtle detail of a plasma but it has been well worth the adjustment! (Our set is professionally adjusted but I found the same things to be true with my own educated guesses before adjustment!).

Well worth the price.......2005-06-01
We got this model on Saturday. It replaced our lemon of a SONY plasma TV. We are EXREMELY satisfied with the picture AND sound for unlike our last plasma, this unit runs QUIET. Sleek, sexy design and it swivels. A delight and to me it gives every bit as good a picture as the 6000-10,000 dollar priced units. Go HITACHI!
Love it!!!.......2005-03-24
Hitachi has the rest of the 42" Plasm HDTV's wondering how can they do it all for under $4,000? After much research, we bought it, and have not looked back. The color and sound is simply incredible, and we only have cable... highly recommend
Bad Support. Stopped working after just one month........2004-04-28
Stopped working after just one month.
Called Hitachi and they told me to call an authorized repair center. I called the repair center and the repair center referred me to another repair center... I called that repair center who made an appointment to see the TV... Took a week for them to come out to see it. After inspecting it told me they have to order a replacement power supply from Hitachi... That took almost two weeks... Once they got it in, it took them couple of days to come to my house to replace the power supply. It still didn't work after that... So they decided to replace another part, the logic board, which they have to order from Hitachi again...
It's been almost two weeks again. And I have been with out TV for over a month... Paying almost $6k for a TV that works for a month made me really upset as you can imagine. I would have been happy if Hitachi fixed it in a reasonable time, but over a month is not reasonable. I have called Hitachi and asked for a refund or replacement to which they just flat out said no. Of course during this time I am also paying for Satellite service which I can't use. I would highly recommend staying away from ALL Hitachi products.
