2 out of 5 stars Nice display, bad product!.......2007-09-13

When I received this product, it did not work. I contacted the phone number on the package, Hidecki Electronics, the company who makes it. They sent me a replacement for the Base, as they determined it was not working properly. I had to pay to ship it back to them, but they promised another remote in repayment for the shipping costs. Well, they shipped a new base, but no additional remote. I contacted them and they said they would send the remote. I got another base unit instead! Neither unit displays the same readings. Plus, now the remote will not send a reading to either base unit. We have replaced all the batteries, however they still do not get a reading from the remote. Plus, it seems that these units are battery eaters! I contacted the company twice now, and I still do not have a response. I would not recommend this product. Spend more money and get a unit that works! We have another product that displays just indoor temperature and humidity, which was checked against a $600 professional unit and is accurate. These Honeywell units do not compare to our $20 simple temp/humidity, old reliable by Micronta.

4 out of 5 stars HUMIDITY READINGS.......2007-08-24

I purchased this unit for use by the person who checks my Fl Condo during my absences. It was easy to set up and start using and appears accurate, I will ckeck it against other meters to confirm its accuracy.

1 out of 5 stars Not so great.......2007-08-14

I purchased this to monitor humidity around my wife's piano and to let me know what the temp is outside. After a few months use, the outside temp/humidity function is way, way off and the indoor humidity doesn't seem right, either. I definitely wouldn't recommend this item to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Relative is the concept.......2007-08-11

This combo thermometer and hygrometer is relatively good. The large display can be seen many feet away. Temperature seems fairly accurate when compared to its remote and 2 other termometers I have. But relative humidity is...well, relative. Internal reliability is poor with a 10% difference between the main unit and the remote. And both units were way apart from the other 2 hygrometers I've have (tho internal reliability with them is a problem too). But when it's dry, both register in the lower range and when it's wet both register in the higher range. But if humdity is important to you, look elsewhere.

The other complaint I have is that the unit can be paired with 2 other remote units but I have been unable to find out how or where to purchase another remote unit. However I still have to cycle thru blank displays remotes 2 & 3 before getting back to the main display on the primary unit.

3 out of 5 stars Good display, bad readings.......2007-08-03

The large dispay is nice, but the temperature and hygrometer readings of the base and mobile units don't match. The humidity readings are off by 20%, which makes me wonder what the real number is. Because of the large size of the base unit, a clock would have been nice. Also, to replace the batteries, you have to unscrew four tiny screws. A snap locking mechanism, like the mobile units would have been a better design.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Digiview RC61ELW Atomic Travel Alarm Clock is a radio-controlled digital alarm clock designed especially for travelers, but you'll find that this inexpensive atomic clock is also ideal for use on a nightstand or a crowded desk. Although the RC61ELW is pocket-sized, it features a large display and an auto-off backlight for clear viewing day or night. This compact, remarkably accurate clock is loaded with dual snooze alarms, and it even features a calendar and indoor temperature display.

Digiview didn't scrimp on style -- this clock has a semi-metallic silver-toned molded case that looks good in any decor. In timekeeping mode, the clock's two-line LCD panel shows the time, month, date, weekday, and indoor temperature. The dual alarms also feature a programmable snooze interval so you can wake up just how you prefer. The hinged front cover protects the LCD display during travel, and then pivots open to serve as a stand. Designed for placement on a nightstand, table, or desktop, this compact clock works on the road, at home, or in the office, and it is powered by a single AAA battery (not included).

The RC61ELW is amazingly accurate. It calibrates itself to the world's most accurate clock every night by receiving WWVB 60kHZ radio transmissions. These transmissions contain time information from the U.S. atomic clock source operated by the U.S. Commerce Department. The time can be displayed in 12-hour or 24-hour format, the month and date are displayed digitally in that order, and the weekday is displayed as a two-letter abbreviation in English, Spanish or French. Successful reception of the time-sychronization radio signal and signal quality are indicated by a radio tower and waves icon just above the clock's seconds display. After synchronization occurs, you can select your continental U.S. time zone, and a U.S. map icon in the upper line of the display indicates the selected time zone. This clock automatically also adjusts for Daylight Saving Time.

Almost anyone who travels can use and appreciate the Digiview RC61ELW. It's small enough to fit in a pocket or purse. And because the clock can be manually set, you can use it outside of WWVB range, in which case it functions as a highly accurate digital quartz clock. This economical atomic travel alarm clock makes a thoughtful and practical gift.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great item.......2007-05-26

The clock is compact and easy to read. It was just a bit confusing to set up; it didn't have the time zone for Alaska, where we were traveling. If you read the instruction booklet, it's easy to use.

3 out of 5 stars not user-friendly.......2007-05-25

I have used a travel alarm for years that is small and simple to use, but worn out. This Digiview is twice the size and difficult to program. I ordered it for the atomic time reset feature but that convience hardly offsets my frustration. I need to take the instructions with me when I travel. Maybe I'll eventually get used to it.

1 out of 5 stars don't bother.......2007-05-23

It did not set itself to any atomic clock in US or in Italy. It wouldn't keep time and it was hard to manually set it. It seemed like a great idea, but it was back to the cheap little manual alarm clock with the battery for my trip; I was glad I didn't throw the manual one out. I left the atomic travel clockack in italy rather than waste space on carrying it back.

4 out of 5 stars Gets The Job Done.......2007-05-14

I was most interested in the variable time snooze. For those of you who are too, the variable snooze adjustable from 1 to 60 minutes in one minute intervals. It works well, I set it to one minute and get right out of bed. The automatic clock setting works but only includes US time zones. I don't know how it will react if you leave the country, plus you can't turn off the automatic setting of the clock, which I'm guessing I will be useful when traveling abroad. Yes there is a buzzing noise when the back light is on. Big deal though. I can't even hear it unless I'm in a noiseless environment. Yes the AM and PM is VERY small. If your vision is bad don't buy it for this reason.

2 out of 5 stars Frequent Amazon Purchaser.......2007-05-13

This clock works okay, but it's much too complicated. It reuses the same buttons for several things. I threw it away and bought one at the drug store that was much easier to use and cost less.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was hoping for.......2007-08-24

I'm impressed with this little thing. The case is well-made and has a very solid feel. The Nano fits perfectly into the skin and into the MiniBlaster. I didn't have difficulties with the fit like others mentioned. Getting the Nano out takes some pushing, but that's the way it should be. You don't want it falling out on it's own and hitting the pavement. All the Nano controls are accessible. The front, circular control (volume/scroll) works fine through a silicon skin and is very protected.

The reason we buy this thing is for sound and size. Size and weight are impressively minimal. You won't beat that anywhere. As for sound, it's not a home entertainment center or a Bose IPod system - it's a tiny little device that offers maximum portability. If you can bring your Bose system along with you, then do it. If you need something small and more portable, then read on.

The sound has a distinct clarity. Mids to highs are crisp and well separated. What you loose is bass. It's attenuated, but not dull or muddy. I wasn't expecting strong bass with a frequency response of 450Hz to 20KHz. It's not built for it and shouldn't be expected.

It's made, as others have said, for you and a couple of friends in an environment without too much ambient noise. If you are looking for a system that you can play at a beech party with a big group of friends, keep looking, because this isn't it. Too many voices chatting away will drown this little thing out.

In a reasonably quiet room or out on the trail, you get enough volume to really enjoy the music. It's loud enough to hear the detail in the sound. It even gets too loud for conversations and has to be turned down. Don't get me wrong, the neighbors won't be calling or stomping on the floor. It has what it needs to fill the niche that it's designed for.

I personally like the sound with the EQ set to "Small Speakers" - seems like a good balance for Classic Rock which I tend to listen to the most.

If you want a small, light and very portable speaker system to free you from headphones and make portable music a social experience between friends again, then you are onto something.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great for use while traveling.......2007-08-11

I wanted to be able to listen to podcasts and my own music while commuting and so first purchased (for $80) an FM converter that plugged into the lighter and my iPod and then matched an unused frequency to play what was on the iPod. The sound wasn't great and it changed depending on where I was driving. I spent a lot of time trying to find the right static frequency and match it with the device. In the short time that I tried it out I had to switch frequencies twice.

So, I looked for a speaker. I decided that it wouldn't be a disaster to buy something at this price to try even if it didn't work great. It was what I was looking for! I can use it in the car and also other places where I want to play what is on my ipod so that others can hear. It is not great sound quality, but it is much better than what I was getting with the FM converter and much easier. I can either use batteries or the AC adaptor (I already have a device that converts the cigarette lighter into AC power).

It is a great solution for what I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars Good Product.......2007-07-26

I recommend this product over similar products that are outrageously expensive. Powerful sound for it's size and easy to use. Great value.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, under 15 bucks including shipping!.......2007-07-04

Don't expect too much bass out of -any- tiny speakers but as a way to turn your nano into a sort of 21st century "transistor radio" equivalent with stereo audio and a better sound quality, this little thing is superb. Talk radio podcasts are delivered very clearly and music can be enjoyed to an extent especially if you choose an appropriate EQ setting on your nano. Volume capability is decent, just don't expect to entertain an audience bigger than about two or three. Battery life is good for the 4x AAA batteries.

3 out of 5 stars JLab Audio.......2007-06-08

The sound is good from the Miniblaster, but getting my Ipod in and out of it is a real chore!! It is very difficult to do. It not only is very hard to place in the miniblaster, but getting it out is even worse. I like the size of it as it doesn't take up a lot of room when I place it on the counter. Just difficult to use. It is also hard to adjust the volume with the "skin" on it.

4 out of 5 stars slow to start but eventually fine.......2007-07-24

was a bit frustrated at first as the clock would not pick up the signal (only have a north-facing unit in our condo). it would not sync for a couple of days. this was even up against a window. then decided instead of going through the hassle of returning the thing i would just put it in our bedroom and manually set the time. it was at least 10 feet away from the window by this point. well, magically the antenna and signal sign came up by the next day and the thing has been sync-ing daily since. have no idea if the manual set somehow triggered the thing but otherwise it would not sync before that. so, overall happy with it now that it's working. big numbers, easily visible from almost any angle. can wall mount or use the stand to place on a flat surface. temperature seems to be fairly accurate on the thermometer reading.

5 out of 5 stars Startup couldn't be simpler.......2007-03-20

Simply inserted the batteris. Within a minute the clock had synched to WWV. Startup couldn't be simpler.
The time seems accurate, and should be more accurate than almost all others sources, except for GPS. But one doen't need the GPS nano-second accuracy for home usage.

5 out of 5 stars This clock works as described........2007-02-19

I have had the clock a week, and I ordered two more like it.

I tried a digital wall clock because I couldn't stand the ticking of the mechanical clocks with hands. The digits on this clock are clear. The radio-synchronization works perfectly. I recently compared it to the Greenwich time using the internet, and it was on the second.

There are some weak points. The instruction booklet has very small type. Have reading glasses handy. The display needs a certain amount of light to be able to read it at wider angles. The radio synchronization didn't kick in until the morning after I set it, but has been working fine ever since.

The clock also looks nice. All in all, it serves its function very well.

Amazon.com Product Description

Wake to the sounds of your favorite iPod tunes with the Emerson iTone iC200BK clock radio. Offering a built-in iPod docking station and Emerson's patented SmartSet auto time-setting system, the iTone is the perfect bedroom, office, or kitchen stereo. The iTone's audio performance starts with its powerful amplifier and matching high-fidelity speakers, which combine to produce the type of high-quality, crystal-clear sound you'd normally expect from a much larger, more expensive audio system.

The built-in iPod docking station, meanwhile, lets you play any dockable iPod model-- including the iPod mini, nano, and shuffle--through the system's speakers. The docking station also automatically charges your iPod battery so you won't have to worry about running out of power. Most importantly, you can choose to wake up to any song in your iPod catalog every morning.

The iTone iC200BK is easy to use. The digital turner automatically scans the AM and FM bands and locks in stations perfectly with no repetitive fine tuning required. You won't have to struggle to read the time thanks to the 0.6-inch white LED clock display, while the integrated station presets (10 AM and 10 FM) make it a breeze to locate your favorite stations at the touch of a button. The radio frequency also features a dimmer control so you can clearly see your choices. And don't worry about bad overnight weather conditions short-circuiting your alarm, as Emerson's SmartSet automatic time- setting system automatically sets the clock to the correct year, month, date, day, and time the first time you connect the system to your AC outlet and after every power interruption. It even adjusts for daylight saving's time and leap years all on its own.

Because everyone has a preference when it comes to deciding when and how it's best to start the day, the iTone iC200BK's unique dual alarm system lets you wake up to your iPod, the radio, or an electronic buzzer that starts softly and gradually increases in volume to wake you gently. It also lets you program one or both alarms for weekdays only, weekends only, or everyday operation. The clock even includes a programmable 99-minute sleep-to-music timer with auto shutoff and a 99-minute nap timer that wakes you after a nap without having to change your regular alarm settings. If you need a little extra sleep in the morning, there's also a snooze alarm that you can activate by pressing the snooze button on the top cabinet or the remote control, or you can simply wave your hand in front of the "touchless" snooze sensor on the front panel.

The iTone iC200BK is flexible and versatile, offering both ease of operation and customization options. Thanks to the compact 13-key remote control, you can operate all the major functions of your system from across the room. And if you still want to use some of your favorite devices with the iTone iC200BK, you can take advantage of the included stereo headphone jack and an auxiliary input jack on the back panel, both of which make it a snap to connect older, non-docking iPods, MP3 players, and personal CD players.

The iTone iC200BK measures 13.5 by 8.5 by 6.5 inches and comes with a 3-volt battery.

What's in the Box
Clock radio, remote control, 3-volt battery, user's manual.

4 out of 5 stars Just What I've Been Looking For...........2007-09-07

I don't know if they have "rev'ed" this item since the bad reviews were posted but I'm very happy. This is a $70 alarm clock with iPod dock and for the price it works and sounds fine. I've tried two other iPod clocks(extremeMac Luna and the latest iHome) and they both came up short. I have a few need for an alarm clock.

I want to go to sleep listening to audio books on my iPod
I have to have a gradual ramp up buzzer alarm.
The radio has to work reasonably well on AM and FM

The Luna was great but the radio was useless to the point of it not really being a clock RADIO. The iHome was better in that respect but you couldn't have an iPod connected and use the gradual alarm buzzer.

The only issues I have are the lack of a 5G dock (see review below) and the fact that even on the low setting the display is a little bright. This is a common complaint on iPod alarm clocks. I don't understand why the designers of these products can't get it though their heads that an alarm clock display needs to be really dim in the dark. Don't they test these things? Auto dimming would be even better so you can see the time clearly in daylight.

But I'm finally satisfied.

2 out of 5 stars inconsistent.......2007-08-26

after four months the power button on the top of the unit ceased working and the unit could not be turned on. Amazon sent a replacement even though it was after the 30 days .... the second unit remote sensor did not function... the third unit was received and set up and seems to be working - but it is only the first week... so although i thought it was a good value ... i have been disappointed by the quality of the actual physical product.

3 out of 5 stars This works great! ... almost........2007-07-07

Alright, first, I really do love this thing. As a stereo for my ipod goes it's wonderful, I haven't been plagued by the humming sound many reviewers mention. The remote for it works well from anywhere in my room, also a plus.

The clock, well its nice to not have to set it, and that's for certain, the two alarms and that they can be set by weekdays or weekends are also nice, though it would be even nicer if I could get down to specific days, just due to schedule oddity. Still wonderful and I'd take nothing off for it.

The radio is very receptive. I can pick up a radio station that any stereo in a building tends to have to struggle with, which is one thing I was hoping for.

Ok, now the problems:

Even on dim the screen is super bright, ah well, I can live with that, no worse than the led lights from the computer or the glow of the optical mouse from the days of using my computer to play music at night.

The touchless snooze. Just in general this is a problem, and that I can't turn it off is even worse. It's far too sensitive. I had it on a dresser at the foot of my bed and the only reason I heard it was I was already awake. By the second quiet ring, my foot twitching set the snooze. I now have it located on a bookcase across the room. Unfortunately this means I can't read the time on it at night unless I happen to have gone to bed with my contacts in. The alarm going from soft to loud is nice though, and with it set on buzzer I can have music going on my ipod at night and it will still switch to alarm at the proper time.

I think if the touchless snooze either wasn't there or if it had a way to kill it I would go full on the rating, but this just really hurts its functionality as an alarm clock.

1 out of 5 stars horrible humming sound! .......2007-07-01

I bought this to have something to play my iPod in the bedroom. However, when this thing is turned on, there's a horrible 60Hz humming sound, which means it's impossible to play it at low volumes. I've tried moving it to different outlets and moved it to different spots around the house, so it's not environmental. The problem occurs for both the radio and the iPod.

Don't waste your money on this product! I can't believe Emerson didn't at least try it before releasing this faulty product!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted.......2007-06-12

This was exactly what I was looking for. I've owned it for probably 9 months now and it has been great. I love the "wave your hand in front of it to make it sleep" feature, as I usually just end up waving my hand about searching for the sleep button anyway in the morning. The radio reception is excellent, and it keeps my ipod nice and charged.

It is a bit bright, but I just keep it on the floor next to my bed so that is not really a problem. The "nap" feature is great too, but it's too bad that's only connected to the buzzer alarm. But only two negatives with all the other positive aspects, seems like a good deal to me.

Also, the remote is great for when I'm getting ready in the morning. It does randomly go to sleep occasionally without my touching it or waving my hand in front, but it doesn't totally go off, just pauses, so this has never been a problem for me (I'm a light sleeper anyway). Oh, and I don't know what this buzzing noise others are referring to is, I've had this thing up loud while I clean and I've never noticed that. Perhaps it's not as happy with the newer ipods? I don't know, but I have a mini and it's great.

4 out of 5 stars Just bought this item at Target.......2007-09-10

I really like the look of this alarm clock, hopefully it will hold up ok, it seems to be a bit mixed, looking at reviews. Apparently it is a SHARPtech product, not Sharp, made by M.Z. Berger and Company.

I have the warranty on hand - It is warranteed for 2 years after date of purchase against manufacturing defects. If you still have the reciept or photocopy, you can send them with the product to:

M.Z. Berger Service Center
33-00 Northern Boulevard
Long Island City, NY 11101-2224

but they require a check of $5.95 to cover S&H, which is hardly worth it for a $10 product. They note to include your return address. If mine breaks, perhaps I will purchase the award winning plastic one from LL Bean.

The model is SPC303 - or at least mine is.

1 out of 5 stars Piece. Of. Crap........2007-09-06

So, I got this a week ago and somehow -- on using the Snooze function -- I put it into a "Silent Alarm" mode. No lie. I set the alarm on a test and waited. The display blinked. No sound. After spending far too long trying to get it out of silent mode (including removing the battery in order to rest it to factory default), I called Sharp for help. Two phone numbers later, they tell me "It's not a Sharp Product." Even with Sharp's name all over it, it's not a Sharp product therefore they don't support it. The support number they provided wasn't even a toll free support line.

Thanks for nothing, Sharp.

2 out of 5 stars Looks can be deceiving.......2007-04-08

I bought this alarm clock today (April 7, 2007) at Bed, Bath and Beyond for $10. I wish I had seen the reviews first. I bought it because of the product name, small size and variety of options. Unfortunately, I realized it wasn't a great buy when I brought it home...and spent a few hours trying to keep the battery in a certain position so the clock would stay on. The connections appear to be very sensitive and the battery doesn't stay in place.
The clock light is pointless. It's supposed to help you see the time in the dark, but unless you have the clock at a certain angle everything will appear blurry. Actually, the screen is blurry in most positions even with the light off.
As for the alarm, it's pretty quiet. If you're a sound sleeper or live in a noisy environment, this is not the clock for you. You'll only hear the alarm if you sleep with it under your ear.
A final note on this product: The clock has been on for almost an hour without any problems...but only with the battery cover slightly open. If I close the cover all the way, the clock shuts off. If you want an alarm clock that will last awhile, I suggest buying something else. You get less than you pay for with this model.

3 out of 5 stars Dim background lighting.......2007-02-27

I bought this clock to keep up with the time at home when I traveled over the international date line. I also brought a second clock to give me real time at the location I was traveling to.
I liked the clock for it's small size, temperature gauge, 12 or 24 hour clock feature, and the calendar. The only problem I found with it is that the button to light up the clock failed to work after a while. Still I continued to use it and and still would, but I left it at a hotel last weekend. I bought it at Target for around $10.

2 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for.......2006-07-13

I bought this clock at WalMart at the end of last year (2005). It was the cheapest travel clock with the features that I wanted. It has worked well as a daily alarm clock until about a month ago when the alarm stopped beeping. I have replaced the battery and the alarm still doesn't beep, but the display light flashes as normal. I got about 8 months out of this clock, so I guess that's not bad. But I wouldn't buy it again.

5 out of 5 stars Great piece of equipment.......2007-08-28

The setup was a little difficult at first. I would think you could do everything from the software but you can't some things need to be input with the remote or buttons on the side of the unit. The 1.2 version of software that comes with the unit needs to be upgraded to 1.3 as soon as you can as the 1.2 version was writing my data file and it was growing after 3 days to 138MB! But the new version solved all that and it runs fine now.

1 out of 5 stars Poor software, poor manual, inaccurate sensors.......2007-07-29

The "Weather Capture" software that came with the unit is version 1.2 nad has very limited capability written by an appearant novice software engineer. The Honeywell web site has a link to get the upgraded software (version 3.1) but clicking on this link gives error 404 (file not found). Very sad.... Also, the software screen shot shown on the TE923W box is totally different than what you get on the included CD (maybe they are showing version 3.1 which you can't get from their web site).

The manaul has been converted to English from some other language and was done very poorly. Quite often it is difficult to determine what the manual is instructing you to do.

The temperature sensors seem to be fairly accurate (compaired to other digital thermometers I have). The humidity sensors seems to be reading 10%-15% lower than what gets reported by local radio and TV stations just a few miles away. The local barometric pressure reading is always 1-2 inHg low. At high noon on a cloudless day in late July the UV sensore is reading "medium". Not sure how the actual UV exposure could get any higher but the sensor only indicates "medium" all day.

I've downloaded several software programs for use with weather stations and haven't been able to get any of them to work with the Honeywell TE923W. This does not seem to be a well supported unit.

When registering this product on-line or asking for techical support you complete an on-line form and it is then sent to the company as an email attachemnt. My Internet Service Provider (MSN) detects a virus with the email attachemnt and won't allow it to be sent.

I can not recommend this unit.

3 out of 5 stars Well thought out unit but inaccurate readings............2007-06-08

This unit is very well constructed and the design well thought out. I didn't like the metric screws as I needed more and they are expensive. Comes with all needed hardware. Instructions are complete but could be a little more clear on some items. UV sensor failed almost immediately and the company has yet to replace it. The most severe shortfall with the unit is the accuracy of the rainfall and wind sensors. The winds sensor seems to be the most inaccurate with the rainfall sensor not being all that far behind. The forecasting function actually works pretty well and the PC connectivity is icing on the cake. In this price range $250, I think it is hard to beat, if you can stand the readings being off a bit.
UPDATE: The company now tells me the some wind sensors have been reported bad. They claim I will receive one with the UV sensor but I haven't seen either one yet. The rainfall sensor agrees with a rain gauge, most of the time. The outside temperature sensor indicates temps correctly but gives some outlandish values for humidity. I need to talk to the company about that also. The rest of the review stands as is.

1 out of 5 stars Wind Speed and Rain Gauge are Inaccurate.......2007-06-01

I have owned the product for about 6 months. While the remote transmissions work very well, the wind speed and rain gauge are very inaccurate. They are often off by a factor of 3. This product is a nice try, but it doesn't work.

4 out of 5 stars Good choice.......2007-02-19

I purchased this weather station for my father as a gift. Having never set one up before, he did run into a little difficulty with the monitor settings. The customer service center listed in the back of the manual offered excellent and immediate assistance. It only took a few minutes to work through the problem. He is really enjoying it. Both he and myself would recommend this model.

Amazon.com Review

Tivoli Audio has made waves in the audio field with the retro look of models such as the Model One Henry Kloss Table Radio and the iPod-inspired iPAL Portable Audio Laboratory AM/FM Radio. The SongBook AM/FM Radio breaks that mold slightly, opting for a simple, yet fun, look and feel. And like all Tivoli Audio products, the SongBook deserves accolades for the surprisingly rich sound it is able to produce despite its compact size.

The Tivoli Design
The first thing that called our attention was the SongBook's brilliant color and unique texture. This is a radio clearly designed to make you feel happy by just looking at it and holding it. With the options of several, bright elementary colors (Black, Blue, Red, Silver, White, Green, Yellow) that make you want to reach for your crayons, the SongBook truly makes a statement. It's a radio that you'll definitely want to take to the beach, and it's a radio that makes you long for summer days all year around.

But Tivoli Audio knows that good design involves far more than color. The radio is coated with a unique, rubberized texture, and the dials and displays are all sealed so that a sudden rain shower or a little sand won't interfere with performance. We're not suggesting that you surf the waves with your SongBook, or bury it in the walls of your sand castle, but a little of Mother Nature here and there won't bother this baby.

Weighing in at three-and-a-half pounds, and with dimensions slightly smaller than that of a hardcover book, the SongBook is designed with portability in mind. The minimalist front-face design -- a round, metal mesh covering the (surprisingly robust) 2.5-inch driver, and several rubberized button and knobs are the only elements in view -- harkens back to early portable radio designs. Five presets, two tuning buttons, a rotary volume control, a function knob (OFF/AM/FM/AUX), and buttons for the alarm, sleep, time set, and back light functions are all clearly and conveniently laid out. The radio's LCD (with an on-demand blue back light) sits directly above the speaker. Meanwhile, three standard 3.5-millimeter inputs are set on the radio's side -- an auxiliary line-in port for plugging in your iPod or other music device, a port for AC/DC power, and a headphone input. All the ports feature strong, attached rubber plugs that keep out the elements when they're not in use. A rear keyhole cut-out for wall hanging is set into the back, and a single telescopic metal antenna is set into its own groove on top of the radio.

Because the SongBook is designed for the elements, the battery compartment is tightly sealed and requires a coin or screwdriver to open. Once opened, you can easily access the two switches (alkaline/rechargeable and 9k/10k) that offer options for the battery source. You can also choose U.S. or international AM reception here. The only design element missing is a handle, but Tivoli offers an optional, color coordinated SongBook Carry Bag to make up for that.

Giving it a Listen
As with other Tivoli products we've reviewed, the sound of the SongBook is remarkably strong for such a small unit. Granted, you don't get stereo sound, but competing designs that offer stereo speakers in a small package don't offer that much stereo separation anyway. Reception came in loud and clear on all the area AM and FM stations, with both AC and DC power. The only glitch, which we were able to repeat in two separate locations, was occasional outside interference that broke up broadcasts with a brief screech. All in all, though, we were happy with the sound of every genre of music we listened to, as well as talk radio. The auxiliary input was great, too, for listening to MP3s from a portable music source.

In addition to good sound quality, we found the presets, time set, alarm, and tuning/search functions impeccable. Everything was so intuitive that we barely needed to consult the manual. Another bonus we liked: The SongBook comes with a handy internal recharger, so you have the option of using rechargeable batteries without the inconvenience of having to carry around a separate recharger.

Tivoli clearly decided early on not to reinvent the wheel with respect to portable radios. Instead, they put their energies into making an easy-to-use, rugged, yet playful, radio. Audiophiles, beach-goers, and general radio listeners of the world should unite in praise.

5 out of 5 stars So far Tivoli gives great music!.......2007-05-31

I just purchased this radio in white. I bought it to use around the house, not for travel. Also since I just unpacked and plugged in the radio today, I have not had an opportunity to use the alarm clock or battery charging functions. Other reviews on this radio spoke of the quality of sound and of good reception. I had tried without success to listen to a favorite FM radio station where I live. The signal could be picked up in my car but not in radios inside our house. The Tivoli Songbook did the trick! I can now hear my favorite music! Although I am not quite the audiophiles that some reviewers are, the quality of sound is fine for me! Also I like the radio's design. It's sleek -- cool! The fact that it has the rubberized casing and is water resistant is icing on the cake. I also like the option of hanging it on the wall although mine will likely be sitting on a table or dresser instead. The station pre-sets are very convenient. Very nice job, Tivoli!

5 out of 5 stars nice way to listen to ipod.......2007-05-20

Great tuner. Pre-sets are very nice. Great way to listen to ipod. Need to buy connector wire to plug ipod into aux input, and can't charge ipod using this device, but speaker is fine and nice to have option of switching from ipod tunes to excellent radio tuner.

4 out of 5 stars Top Quality .... But at a Price........2007-03-22

Super sound, well thought-out controls, and more rugged than you might imagine. This is one fine radio. It has provided excellent performance in daily use since purchase six months ago. Only negative? Tivoli Audio's restrictive pricing policy on merchants.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2007-01-05

When my nearly 20 year old Sony Dream Machine cube style alarm clock radio finally gave out I decided to go in search of the best night stand alarm clock radio money could buy. The requirements were design style, sound quality, reception, ease of use, and a back light that goes completely off so that I can sleep at night. After a good deal of research I zeroed in on the Tivoli SongBook ($159) and the Sangean Sonido ($99). After trying both, here's what I've found:

The Tivoli SongBook has very attractive, modern styling (I prefer the black model), exceptional sound quality (like having a $1,000 Bose next to my bed), terrific reception (I don't even need to extend the antenna to get my favorite radio station clearly), very easy to set/update the clock and alarm times, and a back light which thankfully goes completely off. I took one star off for the SongBooks negatives - the alarm must be turned on everyday buy pushing down and holding the alarm button for a few seconds (easy to do, but I fear the day that I forget), no alarm snooze (I just turn the volume down), and the display, with or without it's beautiful blue back light turned on, is small and difficult to read, even from only a foot or so away while lying in bed.

The Sangean Sonido looks nice, though not as attractive a design as the SongBook, cost's $59 less than the SongBook, has a more readable screen than the SongBook (with back light that goes completely off), has an alarm snooze, and has an alarm that stays on from day to day. While I haven't made my final decision yet on which to keep, I'm strongly leaning toward the SongBook given the Sonido's shortcomings - to get my favorite station clearly I must extend the antenna directly upwards creating an unsightly mess, while better than a Sony Dream Machine the speaker audio quality is only about half as good as the SongBooks (I think this is what spoiled it for me), and even though the display is nicer when the radio alarm sounds the display shows the radio station number, not the time!

I hope Tivoli will improve the alarm functions in a future SongBook model update, until then I think it's still worth the $159 price tag (as long as I'm not late for a meeting because I forgot to turn the alarm on!)

Update: In the end I decided to go with the Sonido. I exchanged my first unit and the replacement had much better audio quality (though still not as good as the SongBook). The reception remains less than stellar, but while using the SongBook I was late for a meeting because of it's lack of full alarm function features, so it had to go.

3 out of 5 stars Travel radio? Not really........2006-12-02

Cool design, good sound quality, but if your travel plans require a passport, definitely not the radio for you. Not mentioned anywhere on the product specifications is the fact that this radio (as seemingly do most, if not all, Tivoli products, including the expensive iSongBook "travel" radio) requires a standard US external power source, so if you were to try to plug it in, say, in your hotel in Europe, most likely you'll have one less thing to worry about when packing to return home. And of course the warranty will not cover any damages from such "improper" use. Which makes me wonder whether advertising it as a travel radio and trumpeting its AM/FM radio features made specifically "for North America AND Europe" isn't a bit misleading, if not downright fraudelent. Look elsewhere if you really need a radio to travel with.

2 out of 5 stars Stupid thing has no snooze for the nap timer.......2007-03-27

The snooze bar doesn't work with the nap timer. Otherwise, this is just an average piece of junk alarm clock.

1 out of 5 stars Cheap Price, Cheap Quality.......2007-03-18

This Elgin remake of the original Timex 3400T is nothing like the original. (I like the original so much I was hoping to buy another.) Sadly, the quality of this clock is very, very poor. This new design of the 3400T is completely different (worse) -- they should have changed the part number.

I liked the ability to quickly and quietly set a "nap" time in the original. No more! The updated version is much more difficult to set and it beeps loudly every time you press a button.

I am very disappointed. I'd gladly pay three times the price to get a 3400T of the original Timex design.

5 out of 5 stars Modern cool.......2007-01-06

I have used this clock for a few months now.Its great. Its the little things like the ease of setting the nap timer or using the snooze. Some guy said this clock gains time.Thats a little true after 5 Months it gained 3 minutes. Not a problem.

2 out of 5 stars Gains time..And Display isnt very clear.......2006-02-26

Bought this despite mixed reviews from previous customers. As mentioned by others it gains approximately 3-4 min in a week. Also the Indiglo display isnt that great. It is very hard to see the time display during the day. Bottomline.. Always look through customer reviews and think hard and long if a product you are considering buying has bad reviews.

Update: Display is all messed up after just one battery change. Stay away from this product

5 out of 5 stars does what I want.......2006-02-23

I wanted to set a timer for certain events. This does exactly what I want very well, at a very fair price. After reading the reviews, I had expected it to gain or lose minutes each day, which would be ok with me, but have had it for a month or so and it keeps the correct time. Pleasant design, works fine, I am pleased.
