NEC 870 with Windows XP.......2006-06-05

I'm glad that I didn't read the reviews stating that the 870 wouldn't work with XP. If I had, I might have been concerned when I bought my new computer. As it was, I just started printing after loading the NEC provided CD.

In fact, to complicate things, I'm printing through my home LAN via an Ethernet-to-Parallel print server (about $30, if I remember correctly). My HP inkjet is also on the server. No problems with either.

How to make this printer work with Windows XP.......2005-08-06

Ok, this was a super printer. I would have given it 5 stars -- worked for years, printed many many drafts of my dissertation -- but then NEC stopped supporting the driver. Everyone still using this has had problems because it definitely doesn't work with XP, and some people have problems with Windows 2000. NEC no longer supports it; they blame Adobe for not updating the PrintGear software they depend on, and Adobe (perhaps not surprisingly) blames NEC.

Regardless, I have just discovered a way around this. While I would NOT recommend that anyone buy this printer from a reseller even though it is cheap, if you already have this and want to keep it working, I suggest using the driver for the HP LaserJet IIP. To do this, use your control panel, select "Printers" (or whatever), "add a printer" and then you will have to manually select the driver. You should be able to pick out this driver out of the list of what came preloaded with XP. Select HP as the company, and then choose between the printer driver options.

I don't know whether this will clear up all the problems for everyone, and let you use all the features that were available with this printer when the NEC driver worked (watermark, booklet printing, etc.), but I do know that I wasn't able to print at all before, and I can print all my basics now. Best laser printer I have ever owned!!!

Go to the Hewlett Packard website and download the Windows XP updated driver for an HP IIP Laserjet. Works like a charm!!!!!

NEC Abandons Customers.......2004-08-16

This printer works wonderfully ... quick and reliable prints... no problems until Windows XP. NEC refuses to make a driver for Windows XP, thus leaving me with a useless piece of trash.

Based on this experience I would guess NEC has no problem treating its customers poorly and would expect the same on their "current" products. I'll not buy another product from NEC.

NEC Abandoned Current Owners of the NEC 870.......2003-12-24

The NEC Superscript 870 is a great printer. I've used it now for three years and it's a workhorse that never jams and continues to spew out fantastic looking text, graphics, etc. I love this printer!

However, I HATE NEC! NEC refuses to issue an updated driver for this printer so that it can be used with the Windows XP operating system. If you have XP or want to upgrade to XP (like I want to) this printer will suddenly become a large paper weight! This means that I spent $400 three years ago for a terrific printer that still works like a charm and shows no signs of ever stopping BUT when I upgrade to Windows XP I have to buy another printer.

Simply do a search on the net for "NEC Superscript 870 XP Driver" for evidence of widespread frustration regarding this printer and the terrible way NEC has handled this problem.

I will never again buy ANY product from NEC.

I've had this camera for almost two years and am now in the market for a new one. It served it's purpose well and I can not complain about the camera. Although starting about 6 months or so ago, the quality of the pictures started to diminish. Now everyone time I upload pictures I have to lighten every single picture - which is quite time consuming. The pictures turn out very dark. So if you're looking down the road on how the camera will perform after lots of use, this is just what I experienced.

Great Camera.......2006-12-29

I have had this camera for about 3 years now and I am still very happy with it. I take this little camera every where I go and am constantly taking pictures, my kids automatically turn and smile when I call their names lol. I am still using the original battery that came with the accessory package, I charge it on the cradle when I think about it...lol. I love the fact that the lens cap is attached so that I wont lose it and the fact that the viewing screen can be turned off to provide more battery life. The pictures come out just awesome, I have compared them to pictures taken from a friends 8.0 mp camera and there is no distinguishable differences that either of us can see. I have had several cameras before this one and this is by far been my favorite. The pictures I took of my daughters tee-ball team came out better than the pictures the professional photographer took with his high dollar equipment. My six and ten year olds are able to use this camera and easily take outstanding photos, I would recommend this camera for anyone.

I bought this before Christmas 2 years ago. It is simply a great digital camera for the money. I just returned from a 14 day European trip to Italy, France and Spain, and got some fantastic pictures !!! I also got some great pictures using the NO FLASH and the landscape mode. It is so user-friendly!! I love this camera and will probably purchase Kodak in the future.

Defective keyboard revises rating to 2 stars.......2007-02-25

Having just received a used version of this product from an Amazon reseller today, it seems appropriate to write a review using the LOGITECH CORDLESS COMFORT DUO. Everything but batteries was included in my like-new purchase, including a shrink wrapped Setup manual with a 2002 copyright date.

Showing beginning signs of repetitive keystroke irritation, continued attention to better ergonomic solutions is important. Already I have a fully adjustable Herman Miller Aeron chair, under-desk keyboard drawer, and Logitech Marble Mouse trackball accompanying my standard Mac extended keyboard.

LOGITECH CORDLESS KEYBOARD

[Edited March 10, 2007: Keyboard periodically malfunctions -- either becoming unresponsive to keystrokes, repeating keys with no hands on the keyboard, or locking caps. This may be symptomatic of a defective unit, a serious design flaw or poor battery life. See customer comments.]

I like the fact that the split keyboard is curved in a more natural wrist position. Small legs beneath the keyboard tilt the keyboard forward but can introduce rocking when the palm rest is not securely attached. Just make certain it is securely snapped in. With or without the attachment, the keyboard does not fit in my under-desk tray so it sits on top of my desk. (Therefore, the original keyboard remains in the tray allowing me to use either one.) There are no USB ports on the wireless keyboard.

It does not take long to get used to typing on the split keyboard. Because of the angle, it is easy to accidently transpose the Shift and Return (Enter) keys with my right pinky. Just noticing personal behavior, I tend to rest my left palm on the wrist rest and elevate my right hand so that only finger tips are touching. (The ergonomic manual advises against resting either palm on a surface.) Keys require full depression, which may annoy some touch typists. (I learned to type on a manual typewriter so am used to pressing hard.) Number keys are appropriately split between the 6 and 7. Keys are slightly louder than my standard Mac keyboard with the spacebar providing the most acoustics.

Function keys are from F1 through F12 (typical on Windows keyboards) instead of F16 on the standard Mac extended keyboard (but extra 4 customizable buttons are included on the Logitech keyboard). Modifier keys are clearly labeled with Mac and Windows symbols. There is no light on the Caps Lock key to indicate it is enabled. It's pretty much a given that a keyboard skin for this odd shaped layout is unavailable. Too bad, since I am frequently rinsing the one for my standard keyboard. Perhaps the different location, on top of the desk will keep the Logitech one clean.

It is possible to use the peripherals without the Logitech software (at least on the Mac) but installing enables configuration of four (supposedly five) hot-key buttons on the cordless keyboard and five on the cordless mouse. The installer was straightforward without a hitch on OS X 10.3.9. The same Logitech Control Center can assign actions to my Marble Mouse trackball buttons. Hot keys can open folders, launch documents/applications, go to a Web page, or perform a keystroke, adjust monitor brightness, or eject a CD. Only the so-called power button did not respond to any assignments.

There's a IR connection between the base, keyboard and mouse rather than a battery draining Bluetooth. This is good since there is no switch to turn off the mouse or keyboard. IR range is excellent. Though I could not read the text, the up and down keys scrolled from across the room (about 12 feet) even when the keyboard was turned away from the base. So you could use the keyboard as a (rather large) remote control when watching DVDs. However, the dedicated media control keys (pause, stop, backward, forward) affect iTunes, not DVD Player. The IR apparently also interferes with Screensaver during DVD playback. Normally, the Mac OS does not go sleep or activate Screensaver when viewing movies in full-screen mode; the cursor even fades into oblivion if not used. However, since connecting the COMFORT DUO the cursor remains visible when playing DVDs full-screen and I had to reset the Screensaver not to activate for a couple of hours so I can view an entire movie.

LOGITECH CORDLESS MOUSE

Wireless is nice but the position of the right finger key is not natural for the size of my hand. Though I would like to lose the cord, the trackball is more comfortable and requires less real estate to navigate large monitors. Scaling is surprisingly very good; I can move the cursor from one end of a 1920 x 1200 pixel display by sliding the mouse laterally only 3 inches. The scroll wheel works but feels very stiff with preset clicks resulting in jerky page scrolling. The cursor jumped around too fast until slowing down the tracking speed with System Preferences: Keyboard & Mouse. My fingers are long so the position of the right finger button is not natural for me. I still prefer to use my two-button trackball.

The Logitech Control Center software assigns actions to two fingertip buttons, the scroll wheel (normal or so-called "accelerated" scrolling), scroll wheel click, and right thumb click. I mapped the Tab key to the right thumb button. Though not intended for left handed users, the mouse feels reasonably comfortable in either hand; the thumb button can be clicked with the ring finger.

BUYING RECOMMENDATIONS

The CORDLESS COMFORT DUO has been all but disowned by Logitech. There is no information about it found on their Web site, hence no available driver updates if required for the next OS. In its place is a similar Windows-only CORDLESS COMFORT DESKTOP LASER with a new mouse, same keyboard layout, and different palm rest. What that means for Mac users is there is no software to configure the hot keys but very likely basic functions of the keyboard and mouse will still work.

If you can find a used CORDLESS COMFORT DUO, it can save you more than half the cost of current offerings. The money saved may be useful in searching out a good mouse replacement. If you use a Windows machine, check out reviews on the LOGITECH CORDLESS COMFORT DESKTOP LASER with software for XP and Vista.

Nice keyboard but high key pressure makes it difficult to type.......2006-11-22

I used this keyboard/mouse for over a year. I like the ergonomic shape and the wireless capability. However, I threw them aside when my hands started to hurt from typing and mousing. After looking at a few other keyboards, I realized just how difficult this keyboard's keys were to press. The mouse also takes some effort and is abnormally heavy for a mouse.

Overall, I would not recommend buying this product because of the strain you will be putting on your hands and wrists.

i wish logitech would sell the keyboard separately from the mouse, but it's a great product. i just need to stop spilling liquids on it!

Power User - love it!.......2006-09-20

I've been a programmer for 22 years and type about 65wpm. I'm on email/internet or programming all day long and I type hard much of the time. I've had this keyboard for 3.5 years and it is still going strong! Most of the keys are worn smooth but all letters on them are crisp and clear. I've worn out two Microsoft Natural keyboards in my career and have had two Microsoft keyboards at home that have both failed after a while. I'm a big Logitech fan now.

The mouse batteries last me about 2 months so I just keep a set of AA NimH batteries on a charger all the time. The keyboard batteries last at least 6 months and maybe as long as a year.

I do not have any use for the special function keys for email, internet, etc at the top of this keyboard and would not pay extra for them. High on my wish list for an improvement is more of a rise in the middle of the keyboard between the G and H keys to make it more comfortable for long-term use.

Ergonomic feel.......2006-06-30

We ordered these for use with our notebook computers. They make working with a notebook more comfortable and more ergonomic for the bulk of our work, which is done away from clients' offices. The keyboard is designed for a more natural wrist position, which reduces stress in the wrists, arms, shoulders and upper back.
