Product Description

All of the Diamond series use audiophile grade film capacitors in the crossover, as opposed to the usual bi-polar types. All use the 'Audiostealth' rock polymer in their construction. The Diamond 7.1 is a compact 2-way loudspeaker which continues the Diamond traditions of affordability, outstanding sound quality and technical performance. After many years, this is still the definitive bookshelf speaker.

Amazon.com Review

British loudspeakers are known and cherished for their precision and detail, and Wharfedale brings hefty helpings of both to a tiny, affordable speaker with astoundingly beefy low end. This two-way speaker is ported at the back--as it would have to be to pump out sound below 50 Hz. The amazing thing is that Wharfedale resorts to porting without also defaulting to a tubby, muddy, or grievously unbalanced tonal character. The Diamond 7.1s are cheery little things, extremely well suited to rear-channel home theater service or front-and-center bedroom, office, or kitchen placement.

These speakers are so small and lightweight that we questioned their ability to render even a facade of full-bodied sound. However, we were happily impressed. The Wharfedale 7.1s are detailed, effortless, warm, and punchy; what bass they can muster is firm and taut, like you'd want from a small speaker. Most speakers have trouble recreating the deep and woody sound of an acoustic upright bass; on the Diamond 7.1s, recordings of this instrument sound articulate and musical, if not necessarily six feet tall.

The Diamond 7.1s sound best at medium-to-loud levels, but you do get more bass as you crank them up, and distortion doesn't seem to be a worry (see our accompanying FAQ for more on Wharfedale's antidistortion measures). The speakers are fairly dynamic, though they do compress a little under high-power, bass-heavy material. They also sound a little piercing at the level where the low end sounds right for rock listening--in this respect the removable grilles help, so if you're going to listen loudly, leave 'em on.

Imaging is good, and the Diamond 7.1s offer a good sense of low-level ambient detail, especially with ambient recordings commonly found on classical CDs. Often small speakers, even very good ones, will really dry up ambient recordings--that is, shrink the perceived room size where the musical performance is taking place. This is largely because so many bookshelf speakers have little deep bass, and many ambient or spatial cues live in low tones and in room resonances that make up the atmosphere of a recording, rather than in specific musical tones.

If pressed to name shortcomings, we'd say the Diamond 7.1s' high frequencies are not as smooth or effortless in quality as those from pricier speakers and are a little too pronounced (emphasizing, for instance, the tape hiss present on CDs mastered from analog tapes). And the bass, for all its pleasing qualities, is a little muddier than one would want in an ideal speaker. But considering the per-dollar level of quality here, these quibbles are easily forgiven.

For a budget sound system or merely a compact, secondary-use pair, we highly recommend Wharfedale's Diamond 7.1 bookshelf speakers. --Michael Mikesell

5 out of 5 stars Great little speaker.......2003-05-28

These speakers are a great value, and they really sound well for their price and size. They seem to do well on all kinds of music and speach. I gave my pair away, and missed them so much that I purchased a pair of 7.2 LTD as replacement. The 7.1s actually sound much better in my opinion. Normally, I listen to Linn Ninka speakers, which are in a different league altoghether, but I really enjoy the 7.1s for a change. I have played them very loud at parties, and have not manage to break them yet, however some of the partiers tried cranking dr dre, odb, motorhead and othen speaker unfriendly music at very high volumes. When my friends succeed in breaking the 7.1s I will definitely get another pair or two as replacement. May even get a matching sub with them. Only wish they had an active version for the laptop or ipod.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound, great price.......2003-05-14

These speakers are small, but pack a big punch! The sound is crisp and tight. You will be challenged to find a better speaker in this price range.

5 out of 5 stars My Ears are Smiling.......2003-03-21

I'd never heard of Wharfedale before I purchased a pair.
Now, I know the name of my next speaker purchase...WHARFEDALE!

5 out of 5 stars Love them!.......2003-03-04

An incredible deal. If you're looking for very affordable yet very good speakers, buy these! You won't be sorry. They're excellent! I'm no audiophile, but I can tell good from bad, and I swear many of my CD's have never sounded this good. Makes me want to upgrade my receiver. No kidding, if the price is right for you, buy them! You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Budget Audio Surprise.......2003-01-03

Ok - just when I wanted to order another Wharfedale Anniversary set (love those in the living room) for the hobby room there are no more. Limited budget, so what do I do now? Ordered with a sigh this 7.1 pair. Just got them set up and fired up on an NAD 7155 receiver. They are very tight! I've auditioned a lot of speakers and actually got earaches at low volumes with some "audiophile" (high priced) speakers, because the bass and mids had a very strange resonance and phase shifting thing going on, that actually hurt my ears for real. Not these little guys. Beautifully driven, but I also suspect they really like a good amp to develop some volume, something to consider. Maybe the other reviewers' complaints about highs are from people that aren't used to hearing them? After the Boston CR75 pair I junked out (award winning, hence over priced, high pitched, mushy bottomed - enough said?) these Wharfedales are perfectly balanced. I finally get to hear all the detail while not in the living room McIntosh driven (the high end amp, not the computer) environment with the slightly larger Wharfedale Anniversary speakers. The 7.1 pair sounds very dynamic. A whack on the drum is a dry and hard one with no wobbely bits. The high end is NOT exagerated, but everything is there and I can pick out the accompanying brass, strings, vocals, well the whole shebang. Sounds like a thick heavy curtain has been removed and I am finally close to the stage or right in the studio. Anybody who sets these up in an apartment and complains about lack of bass is a complete utmost fool and deserves the eviction he will get for sure. No subwoofer needed for me, I can HEAR the lows. All in all, these and the Anniversary edition are hands down the biggest bang for the buck I ever had. With buying TWO Wharfedale pairs I still haven't spent the money I blew on my last set of award winners (the Bostons, bad move). Somebody pinch me.

Pros:
Sound is balanced, tight, clear, detailed, delivers punch, good dynamics, great for rooms under 200 sq-ft IF properly positioned. PS: not quite broken in by now, but I think my hobby room may even be too small for these to unfold. At medium volume they seem to want to hammer on the walls, if that makes sense. A larger environment (tested them in the living room) and some damping furniture/bookshelves/carpet-wall-coverings would let them run loose and unfold into a more pleasant, softer mode, so FORGET the 200 sqft comment I made earlier.
Cons:
consider the price! NO CONS

4 out of 5 stars Very nice for the price .......2005-01-29

Opened the box pluged it in to my system, installed the software and we were off and running. Recognized my Plextor CDRW no problems. Tried some old 4x imation CDR and they bunred without a hitch. The only reason I did not give it five stars, it's a little slower than I expected, but then again I don,t have a top of the line system. I would recomend this drive.

        Customer Reviews:

        2 out of 5 stars Worked for a while.......2004-06-25

This switch worked very well for a little under a year, then it started making hissing sounds, like bacon frying.. no kidding. It was still working well so I shrugged it off for the time being. About a month later it started acting up really badly, ports would randomly go offline, or only link up in 10mbit, whenn they are normally 100mbit. I tore the thing apart (bye bye warranty), and the main controller chip literally burned my finger upon touching it..! Being a hobbist hardware modder, I pried off the stock heatsink, and thermal epoxied a much bigger heatsink to the main controller chip. problems have not come back yet... Very bad long term build quality. Won't be buying a hawking product again..

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing quality.......2004-01-06

This was a very cheap (in price and quality) switch. I also found that this switch got hot. In fact, it would sometimes give off a burning plastic smell. The ports would work intermitently, and my computers would not be able to see the network. It finally just went dead after about a year and a half.

4 out of 5 stars It works well, but a little bit hot.......2003-03-02

I really like the small size of this router,
and the fact that the cables attach from behind,
letting me view the leds while reducing the clutter.
It has been working well for me.
I also like, internally, that it has 1Mb (128KB per
port) of buffer space, and that any port can be
used as uplink, making it easier to install and
        more flexible.
        Only two very minor negatives.
First, the "blinking" of the leds when there is activity
is at constant rate, so it does not give you a good
        idea of the throughput.
Second, the switch runs a bit hot; will this
impact long-term reliability? It's too early
        to tell.

4 out of 5 stars No problems at all.......2007-03-07

I purchased the hp officejet v40xi printer 5 years ago. It is a refurbished model, but I have never had a problem with it. Copies great, faxes great, and scans photos great. Like one other review, it is a little noisy and shakes while printing, but otherwise no complaints.

              1 out of 5 stars V40 Carriage Jam problem.......2005-03-14

I own three of these. One, bought and used at lot in the UK, has been trouble free; two in the States are about 18 months old and little used - and one of them has experienced the "Ink Cartridge Carriage Jam" problem. It was of interest to read of the other reviewer's search turning up many with the same flaw and HP's lack of support - so I certainly won't waste any time and money trying to get it fixed. I wanted to standardize on this product, but am pleased that it is no longer sold and that I had to buy a different one for my fourth printer. I would certainly advise against buying a new or reconditioned V40.

4 out of 5 stars Worked great for me..........2005-03-01

I must have the only v40 that has worked flawlessly.. I have owned my V40 for years. Copies fine. Faxes every week/every time. Paper feeds fine. Prints nice photos and text. I don't remember it ever jamming...

The only issue I have with it is the cost of replacement ink. But, that's a general HP issue..

              1 out of 5 stars Not Reliable!.......2005-02-03

I had the same "Carriage Jam" problem just after one year. Unable to fix. A google search found that this is a very common problem with this machine.

1 out of 5 stars STAY AWAY FROM THE V40!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-11-14

I had this printer for just over a year and suddenly got a message called a "carriage error". It is not an error that can be fixed. HP knows about the defect in this product and doesn't care. A google search revealed that everyone seems to have the same problem just after their 1 year warranty expires. It was very loud and I never was too happy with the printer before it broke. HP - never again!

4 out of 5 stars Three years experience.......2002-04-22

A friend asked about mine and wanted to buy one. On checking the Iomega site to send him a link I discovered they no longer make this. It is a grat product. I don't know of any other way to view digital pictures on a TV other than directly from the camera if it has a video out jack. The Iomega software works pretty good except that you have to put the pictures in viewing order from the Fotoshow. If you put them in order from your computer in Windows Explorer for example the pictures will revert to the order that Fotoshow had them. Other than that it's a great product.

4 out of 5 stars It does what I need it to do........2002-03-21

I got the Fotoshow mainly to serve as a zip drive and as extra storage for my digital camera when I go on vacations. As a zip drive, it works as expected. It's nice to have the option to take it with me as additional storage for my digital camera. I thought of going with a digital wallet, but the thought of carrying (and dropping) a harddrive with all my pictures in it worries me.

There are a few things that I think would make the Fotoshow better.

                1. The card slots are useless when the Fotoshow is connected to the computer via USB cable. It would be nice to be able to use the Fotoshow as a card reader.

                2. The power transformer is big and heavy. It should be smaller and lighter for travel.

                3. Option for battery/portable power.

                4. Faster operation when using the TV.

Overall, I like the Fotoshow. I would like it better if Iomega would fix the items above.

2 out of 5 stars CF tranfer too Slow.......2002-02-28

It have nice resolution, but the transfer time to Zip drives are extremely slow!, it take about 30min to transfer a 128mb Compact Flash to a 250M ZIP drive.

4 out of 5 stars 3 features add up to a decent product........2002-02-26

                Feature 1. USB zip drive.
Feature 2. Compact Flash/Smart Media to zip drive transfers.
Feature 3. Television Display of Images.

The biggest reason I got this was the ability to dump my compact flash card to disk. A 20 gig hard drive digital wallet would be
nice but, its about 3 times the cost.

I plan on going to Australia from the US, and did not want to lug by laptop with me. I bought it for this reason alone, although since it was a ZIP drive as well that gave me extra incentive.

I tested it this weekend on both smart media and CF flash and it worked perfect.

Copy of 38 images off smart media took less than a minute. It seemed the same for compact flash.

Retrieving the images from the Zip drive to a computer was efficient. The photos are under a folder called originals.

Hooking it up to your TV and having it display is simple, it just takes a bit of time to process NEW images.

The TV display is so so. SOme of the editing capabilities are nice, but a bit cumbersome.

It was a big plus to display the images on the TV for my wife and parents.

AS a sample of the usefulenss. A friend had about 150 pictures on A CD of my daughter playing baskeball. I copied the images from the CD to the zip drive, (when it was hooked up to my computer of course). I brought the unit to "grandma's" house. Hooked it up to the TV turned it on, and it took about 15 minutes to "process" the picutres. After that we had a nice slide show....

I think grandma is going to buy one......

The only minor issue I had is

The AC power adapter is only 110 60 cycle. Most digital products these days the AC power adapter is 110/220 60/50 cycle. I have a UNIVERSAL power adapter so I should be OK.

                1 out of 5 stars RIP OFF.......2002-01-26

Don't buy it unless you either already have "POWER POINT" software on you system or are willing to pay [PRICE]to purchase this software. Without "Power Point" you will not be able to use a computer to organize, create, or manage your shows. The editing features that run on the TV are poor ar best. When you copy from a Compact flash card to the zip drive it deletes the originals therefore you must copy these files to your computer before you copy to the zip drive All in All I sorry I got the thing!
