Product Description

The Diamond 8 series is the result of over three years intensive research and development into virtually every aspect of acoustic design. Firstly, the tweeter in all models is a 25mm textile dome, ferrofluid cooled unit powered with an ultra-strong neodymium magnet for the fastest, most accurate response International Audio Group has ever achieved. Next, the woofer cone is made from a bi-directional KEVLAR weave - self-damping in nature, reducing resonant frequencies to virtually negligible levels. The impetus for rapid movement here, is a dual layer, vented voice coil which transmits the signal information with the highest levels of accuracy. The cone is mounted on a nitrile rubber 'Flexaural surround rim'. A profiled phase plug improves the off-axis performance to project an excellent stereo image across a wide listening area. All the stereo models are front ported to enable positioning close to a back wall. Gold-plated bi-wire terminals are used for connection and you should take advantage of the increase in openness this offers, even if using an amplifier with single connections. The final test though, of any loudspeaker is not how much technology is used in the constituent parts, but how these react together to form a coherent package. It's more about the kind of music synergy that can be created between the various elements to ensure the overall result is much more than the sum of the parts. It is this elusive element, the 'musicality' that separates the Diamond 8 from all the competition and you will not believe the results.

Amazon.com Review

Wharfedale's bookshelf Diamond 8.2 loudspeakers are both built and priced to thrill: with their 6.5-inch Kevlar woofers and silk-dome tweeters, they offer uncommonly luscious sound for their size and market positioning, with remarkably deep bass and smooth, transparent midrange frequencies (critical for voices, acoustic instruments, and even electric guitars). They'd make a super choice for use with hi-fi systems, home theaters, or computer setups, though they're not self-powered like most PC speakers are.

The 8.2s derive some of their low-end heft from their ability to push air from their tuned, front-panel ports. Our listening revealed taut, punchy sound with dramatically smooth midrange frequencies and detailed but never excessive or harsh-sounding treble. So you'll hear all the nuance of sticks on cymbals, but the crashing won't rip your ears off. Fittingly, voices and acoustic instruments sounded especially lush and realistic owing to the 8.2s' beautiful midrange, while the bass ran surprisingly deep for speakers using only a single 6.5-inch woofer each (the rated frequency response is 45 to 20,000 Hz).

The speakers owe a lot of their clarity and openness to their textile tweeters and woven Kevlar woofers. The tweeters are 1-inch silk-dome, ferrofluid-cooled drivers powered by a strong, neodymium magnet for speed and accuracy. Kevlar is said to be self-damping, a fact that would grant the woofers high rigidity and easy movement--a terrific recipe for dynamic sound from even wimpy amplifiers. And, despite their 6-ohm rating, it doesn't take much to make these speakers sing. Anything from 20 watts-per-channel integrated amplifiers to 85 wpc surround receivers will make a good fit, though be warned that the speakers are rated for use only to 120 wpc. For optimal sound, especially if you're biwiring, we'd recommend 40 wpc or above.

An especially choice feature of the 8.2s is their two sets of gold-plated speaker terminals, which let you power each speaker's driver independently if desired, a process known as biwiring. (The speakers come with jumpers to allow standard wiring; remove the jumpers to biwire.) Whether you use separate mono-block amps for each speaker or merely use your receiver's A and B speaker outputs to power the tweeters and woofers, respectively--with set A for the tweeters, set B for the woofers--extra cable required--you'll hear a little extra clarity, openness, and even frequency extension since the amplifier is focused only on a given driver's needs at any given moment. (Think: division of labor.)

The speakers' low end is not as taut or as even as you'd find in a larger or more expensive speaker with additional drivers or more sophisticated engineering--but at this price and at this size, their performance is exceptional. We recommend placement at least one foot from any room boundary, and the closer you can get to putting 3 feet between the 8.2s and your walls, the more natural, in our experience--though the port's front-panel positioning allows closer wall placement than would a rear port.

Each of the speakers in the Diamond 8 line uses the same tweeter and cone material for perfect timbral matching, so you can use the 8.2s for either stereo or surround-sound applications, enlisting the Diamond 8.1s as surround speakers, and the Diamond Center for a center-channel speaker. --Michael Mikesell

5 out of 5 stars Delightful but somewhat demanding speaker..........2006-01-29

For a long time I had a very low opinion of this speaker, having only heard at a friend's house who runs them off a very cheap Pioneer 414 receiver and has them positioned quite poorly. After discussing these speakers on an Internet audio forum (ecoustics dot com) I finally decided to borrow them from my friend for a week and hooked them up to my digital Panasonic sa-xr55 and then to my NAD separates.

VOILA!!! It was really like day and night compared to how they sounded in my friend's living room. Both my Panny and NAD are light years better than his one hundred thirty dollar Pioneer, and these Diamonds blossomed. Excellent imaging, warm lush midrange (vocals), solid bass, and nice big soundstage. In short, they had the presence of an entry-level floorstander but the midrange delicacy of a fine bookshelf speaker. The tweeter was not quite as precise as my Ascend Acoustics speakers' during treble peaks at high volumes (above 90db) but the Ascends are by far the best bang-for-your-buck audiophile speakers out there.

I suspect that a lot of the poor reviews around here came from people with similarly crappy receivers who are relatively new to audio and don't understand proper speaker placement and room acoustics. See, the Diamonds are 6 ohm impedance and low 86db sensitivity so they do need more high quality current than your typical 8 ohm, +90db mass-market speakers.

Note I did not say "watts per channel" since most manufacturers today hideously overinflate their RMS numbers especially for their cheap entry level models. (Harman Kardon, Marantz, and NAD are the most honest; Sony, Onkyo, and Yamaha are the least.)

Another key point is that like most audiophile speakers, these Wharfedales are not deliberately designed to accentuate the bass and treble while rolling off the midrange (the V-shaped equalizer curve commonly found in most kids' systems) like the kind of speakers commonly found in boomboxes and mini-stereos that are aimed at kids who usually listen to rock, rap, and dance music often in compressed MP3 formats or off FM radio. Audiophile speakers are aimed more at people who listen to jazz, classical, instrumental, or vocal-dominated music which all benefit from a more neutral frequency response.

So if you're looking for speakers to blast AC/DC or Snoop Dog, I'd recommend JBL or Cerwin Vega instead. If not, these Wharfedales are an incredible steal at this price and should provide you with years of enjoyment. (You won't enjoy taking the grills on and off but very few people ever do that anyways, so relax.)

5 out of 5 stars Superstar.......2005-08-13

Wharfedale Diamond 8.2 is one of the finest speaker you could get for that price. I have brought three pairs of the 8.2 ...it sound alot better than the B&W which cost $1200.00 a pair. If anyone is looking for a pair of speaker for less than $300.00, don't waste your time shopping...8.2 is the one. TRULY

2 out of 5 stars Over hyped.......2004-01-13

Bought some Diamond 8.2's a few months back. After listening to them with all different types of music and also playing them to friends and family the response was rather negative. These speakers
have a really boomy bass, at some points it was hard to distinguish other sounds over it. I tried turning it up and at points the vocal became disorted and shrill, it also sound very flat and 2 dimensional. When played at low, easy listening levels the musical details are lost by the silk dome tweeter and its overly tame driver.
I dont use these any more as i have bought myself some Bose but i would not recommend them to anyone except those on a very tight budget who are not so fussy about sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars gorgeous sound!.......2003-07-23

Ive been a music producer, record executive, and pop music critic. besides all that i've been a music fanatic since i got my first transistor radio in 1965. i need superb speakers! after shopping around brick and mortar stores, and having been flummoxed by high prices, too many options, and imbecilic sales people i came to Amazon and began reading reviews. then i ordered these fantastic speakers. i cannot over state how happy i am with them. it's just a wonderful experience... even listening to records i have heard thousands of times. i didn't want huge speakers dominating my living room (actually my wife didn't want that), but i NEED a clear vibrant bass sound. i like to hear clean high frequencies, but i don't want shrill fake treble. in the studio, we would use Yamaha NS-10's for the final mix. they offer a completely faithful, no-frills, replication of the recorded music. but they sound was so faithful that it was, well.... boring. these wharfedales are EXCITING. they are ALIVE. despite their small size they have full, warm,. round bass tones. even with my relatively low powered Denon 80 watt amp. one recommendation... plug your speaker wires into the Bass inputs in the rear of the speaker. there are two alternative plugs and when i switched to the bass inputs, the speakers realized their full potential. what a deal, too!

These are great little speakers. The wife didn't want the tower speakers so I "settled" with these little gems. I am not an audiophile, but I really do enjoy the sound of these speakers. For the size, they really do produce a great sound. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Why buy the Leica c11?.......2002-11-18

This is a GREAT camera! The author is a serious advanced amateur, having two Hasselblads, a 4x5 rail camera, Canon EOS 3, Leica M3, 25+ lenses, etc. Did I mention a Nikon Coolpix 800? So, where does the C11 fit in? NOTHING is as small and light. This camera is about the size of a deck or cards! The lens is great for the 4x6 prints (if I want 16x20, there are better choices). But it is great for snapshots! Why is it better than the Coolpix? Better lens resolution AND the batteries aren't always dead!
The flash works well to about ten feet. You can just pick this up, turn it on, and take a nice photo in about three seconds. I have lots of cameras that can take good photos, but it takes half and hour to get ready. This camera is easy to hold (I really like the round bulge on the side, very gripable). All the unique APS features are present (panorama mode, date, mid-roll change, etc.).I bought this for my mother-in-law and had to get one for myself! You rarely go wrong with a Leica product; the C11 is another winner!

      4 out of 5 stars A fantastic OUTDOOR camera........2006-08-30

I work at a professional photofinishing lab, and I can attest to the quality of the film inside this camera. The Kodak FunSaver produces excellent results in outdoor and bright indoor shots. However, it does not perform well under normal circumstances indoors and in low-light situations.

The flash on the FunSaver is designed for outdoor use. Even if you are shooting outdoors with this camera, make sure you use the flash. In general, using a flash outdoors provides extra versatility when shooting subjects against bright backgrounds, and in all but the brightest sunlight, the flash will not wash out your subjects.

For indoor or low-light shooting, consider the Kodak PowerFlash camera.

1 out of 5 stars Cheap and Nasty!.......2004-06-16

I recently used the Kodak Funsaver camera at a Birthday. The majority of the Photo's were taken inside using the flash. The Flash must be pressed before each shot is taken otherwise the Flash won't go off (As I quickly discovered). The results were a little dissapointing, very unclear, very grainy. These camera's are cheap in price and I'm guessing aimed at the younger market for things such as School excursions and Camping trips. If you are attending a Birthday and want above average photographs then I suggest spending the little extra and getting one of the more advanced Kodak disposable cameras.

2 out of 5 stars Cheap, Inexpensive way of taking Color Pics!.......2004-01-03

Low in Price, these Camera's are a great way of taking Color Shots. However, being lower in Price than the Max HQ and the Advantix Single Use Camera's you sometimes tend to get Pics that aren't as clear. A Great idea for a Child's School Camp or Excursion.

4 out of 5 stars Eay to use.......2000-10-30

I love these cameras. They are so easy to use, and a lot easier to deal with when it comes time to get the film developed. No fuss with having to wind the film and no worry on your part of exposing the film to light.
