Product Description

With a performance as inviting as its classical good looks, the Emerald, now in its second generation, is a truly refined speaker. Designed with a distinctly art-deco feel, the speakers from the new Emerald range are built into a real wood cabinet, producing a rich, warm sound, steeped in emotion. Although undisclosed by the appearance of the Emeralds, technology is used extensively in the manufacture. Complex computer modeling has been used in the design of the cabinets to minimize coloration, the woofer cones are constructed using the patented mineral loaded homopolymer plastic to damp unwanted resonances, whilst retaining the strength to keep bass accurate and dynamic. Finally, laser interferometry has been used to create a truly outstanding tweeter for the Emeralds. The end result is a classic amongst speakers - a dry acoustic character with a revealing and flawless transparency.

Amazon.com Review

Wharfedale's Emerald 93 is a jewel of a bookshelf speaker. Built by one of England's most celebrated manufacturers, the two-way speakers employ a pair of superb speaker cones as well as other key component parts for a sound best described as "musical." Their sound is impressive--open, warm, and natural--and consistently conveys the essence or "soul" of the music.

That said, the Emerald 93s are handsome, well-fashioned speakers. Both the oak and rosewood models are cased in gorgeous, real-wood veneer with black grilles. Just below and running parallel with the angular grille base runs a wedge carved into the cabinet itself. This subtle yet striking cosmetic touch sets the Emerald 93s apart from less fashion-conscious speakers.

But let's talk about what's inside those cabinets.

A 6-inch, mineral-loaded polymer woofer handles the bass frequencies and the critical midrange, where 80 percent of the music takes place. Wharfedale's quick-response woofer gets its rigidity from finely crushed stone, which Wharfedale presses into the polymer during the molding process. This outstanding driver crosses over to 1-inch, silk-dome high-frequency driver, certainly one of the sweetest tweeters we know of.

In addition to being a looker, the Emerald 93s boast a rigid cabinet that's free of resonant coloration. Both deep bass and speaker sensitivity (how loaded it sounds with a given voltage input) are enhanced by a rear-firing port, which means that the Emerald 93s require some distance from the rear wall (about two feet or so) to perform at its best. We also recommend a pair of sturdy, 24-inch-high stands to get the most from these speakers.

The Emerald 93s' sound is exquisite. Vocals are so present it's like having the singer in front of you. A grand piano, one of the hardest of all instruments to reproduce, is full and sonorous, with layers of complex harmonics and a gorgeous tone, while electric guitars ring with the texture and crunch of real life.

The Emerald 93s' bass sounds punchy and warm, reaching down to an honest 50 Hz with a beautiful roundness. Bowed acoustic basses growl, and drums rock with a sense of real weight behind them. And the tweeter is, again, a marvel--extended, detailed, and sweet.

What else is there to say? Wharfedale's Emerald 93s are remarkable speakers. They're also a remarkable value. If you truly love music and want to hear its subtlety, nuance, and bouquet of tone colors marvelously reproduced, these are speakers you'll cherish. --Wayne Garcia

Amazon.com Product Description

The Wharfedale Emerald 93 is a midsize, rear-ported bookshelf speaker containing a 6-inch mineral-loaded polymer woofer and a 1-inch silk-dome high-frequency driver for the tweeter. A rear-firing port enhances the bass frequencies and adds to the Emerald's warm, open sound. This speaker has a rated power handling of 100 watts with 8 ohms nominal impedance, making it capable of handling the output of more powerful amplifiers without distortion.

The speakers are housed in a real-wood veneer cabinet with black grilles. A wedge carved into the base of the cabinet subtly adds to the aesthetic quality of the rich oak color. And at only 19.8 inches high and 11 inches deep, the Emerald 93 will fit easily into almost any room.

Wharfedale provides a five-year warranty on parts and labor.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Sound.......2003-04-30

A little bigger than other bookshelf speakers so you can't exactly hide these, but the sound is wonderful, rich, detailed and good low frequency... perhaps not the best for rock or rap, but perfect for anything else. AND they are as good looking as any speakers I have seen, with a pleasing vintage style

5 out of 5 stars My bedroom rumbles! Great stuff here!.......2003-03-19

My living room, den and bedroom have all been blessed with the Wharfedale name! The Emerald 93s serve as the "bedroom theater" pair, and are just outstanding with their rich, full and spacious sound. Mount them at ear level, connect with top-of-the-line Monster Cable speaker wire, an added "super tweeter," and subwoofer, the room shakes the rafters!. I smile everytime a sonic boom, scream, or trickle, emits from these fine babies! You can't go wrong with the 93s! ... I'm proud to own these babes!

5 out of 5 stars Emerald 93 Excellent value.......2002-12-18

I have spend considerable amounts of time in audiophile boutiques in various parts of the country and been astounded by some of he pricing involved in stereo equipment. These speakers are easily the best "value for money" I have purchased in a long time. They are beautiful finely crafted solid speakers with a sound quality that is clear, transparant, yet very warm. If you guard your budget carefully and aim to stretch your dollar for audiophile quality- then this is your speaker. Enjoy. HFG.

5 out of 5 stars better than my ears.......2002-11-15

First, i think they're maple not oak, but in any case, and it is the first point, they are beautiful. "veneer" does not do them justice. This is furniture.
More important is the sound. I had some very fine and now 22 year old EPI speakers which i thought were wonderful. They were but some things are finer.I was reluctant to buy speakers online without listening, but the reviews and good price made me take the chance. They are as good as 350$ each bookshelf speakers i've listened to. They have great power handling capacity (if you value your and your neighbours eardrums).
Tonight i have listened to Mozart wind concertos(or as we cognescenti say, concerti), Richard Thompson, and Buddy Guy. The only objection i have to these speakers is that the bass can sound a little punchy on the classical stuff. But honestly, this may have to more to do with the acoustics of my living room( beaucoup de wood, no carpet) than the speakers themselves.
I ruined my ears before i loved anything but blues, but these speakers, at this price are great.
And by the way the EPI's are doing great service as rear speakers for surround.

5 out of 5 stars The best sounding speakers I have ever heard.......2002-06-26

I recently replaced my venerable 16 year old Advent speakers with a pair of Wharfedale Emerald 93s. The first thing you notice is they are so much smaller and lighter than the Advents, how can they possibly sound as good?

Well let me tell you, these speakers have the cleanest, most transparent, warm and sweet sound I have ever heard come from any speaker (with the possible exception of my Sennheiser headphones). The sound stage they produce is well defined and sounds three dimensional. They don't sound like good speakers, they just sound like the musicians are in the room with you. These speakers truly produce "the sound" I have been looking for from my audio equipment for over 30 years.

Even before fully broken in (they need 60-100 hours to fully open up) they are marvelously bright and full. They produce more bass than a box that size normally would (due to the ported design), but without it being over powering or boomy. The high end is accurate without the tinny/hissy quality I hear in too many speakers these days. I would also definitely recommend biwiring, which they are equipped to do.

The bottom line...try them, you'll be pleased with the result.

Take Kodak's hassle-free KB22 camera out on the town and still bring back solid-looking photos. The 30-millimeter lens is constructed of quality, 2-element plastic aspheric material. It has a fixed focus that keeps objects further than four feet away in clear focus. The exposure control is fixed as well and the camera has a shutter speed of 1/100 seconds. The flash fires every time to ensure every shot is well lit and quickly refreshes in 5 seconds.

The LED lets you know when the camera is ready to shoot. Film winding and rewinding are operated manually, and the camera also allows mid-roll rewind. The KB22 uses only 2 AAA batteries, which has an estimated battery life of six 24-exposure rolls. The camera automatically shuts down after a period of nonuse to conserve power. At only 4.3 ounces, the camera can be taken practically anywhere without effort.

The most professional among the compactsThe letter "M" in the name of the new LEICA CM is eminently justified: Its outstanding performance is unusual for a compact camera and makes it as unique in its class as the Leica M cameras are in the category of rangefinder photography. The LEICA CM has a solid titanium body and is fabricated with precision craftsmanship in Germany. A Leica lens with a speed of f/2.4 masters virtually every application and it achieves impressive pictorial results with the finest nuances. Whether it is used in the fully automatic mode or with manual settings - with its extensive, easy-to-operate settings, this compact camera offers the best conditions for individual picture composition. With its brilliant viewfinder, the subject coverage can be evaluated confidently, even under poor light conditions. A detailed LED display in the viewfinder helps in controlling the photographic parameters. And its looks? Typically Leica!

5 out of 5 stars Leica CM - Probably the best P&S in the world...........2005-11-26

Eventually I got fed up of lugging hefty kit around, but still loved using Fuji Velvia, so I decided to buy a decent Point & shoot. After reading the reviews on here I went for thhe leica CM Compact. What a camera. It puts every other camera that I own in the shade. The quality of the pictures is just stunning; I always think that a camera can be judged on how well it handles tricky light situations. back-lighting - no problem, dark and light surfaces - a breeze. One reviewer mentioned that the pictures "almost look 3-D" - I agree entirely. This camera puts my heavy duty film and digital SLR's in the shade. A breeze to use when you have mastered the instructions (which are admittedly rather heavy going, but worth reading carefully several times to get the best from teh camera). I love it, and now travel with it exclusively. Light, unobtrusive, and great quality lens and light meter. A bargain for the price; you will never regret buying this camera. I just love it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Premium Point and Shoot Cameras.......2005-02-18

If Kyocera has discontinued the Contax T3, then the Leica CM camera must rank as the finest premium point and shoot (P/S) camera currently available. Its 40mm f2.4 Elmarit lens is one of the finest ever made for a P/S camera, offering image quality which rivals other recent lens designs for both the Leica M rangefinder and R SLR systems. The image quality is absolutely superb, judging from the photographs I have seen. Although it is a relatively expensive camera in its class to acquire, it is well worth the additional cost.

5 out of 5 stars My Best Camera Ever.......2004-09-30

I have a range of top quality Canon lenses, but I stop using them since I got Leice CM. The optics of Leica CM is just better. Some pictures really look 3D. Leica CM "size-to-quality" ratio is much better than anything I have seen. You can put it in your pocket, and you will not know it is there. It is a bit bigger than a pack of cigarettes. But it is not just the size, it is my first choice for sharpens as well. For all mu "normal" photos, when no close-up or no-zoom is require, it I is my fist choice.

    5 out of 5 stars great decision.......2004-08-08

Traded in a F100 and several lenses, and am delighted.
Results are stunning. Joy to travel with, carry and use.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate in 35mm point & shoot cameras!.......2004-05-02

Of course it is the ultimate, it is well made by Leica, in Germany. I found the camera to be solid and easy to use. Read the extensivly detailed manual (in three languages, including english) to discover the many features and flexibility of this work of art and design. My cloud and indoor pictures have turned out exceptionally sharp with an (almost) idiot-proof metering and auto/manual focusing system. Since I wear glasses, the adjustable diopter in the viewfinder has helped me a great deal. The on body flash is powerful, and an excellent computer integrated accessory flash is available (Leica SF 24 D). The camera's large LCD data screen makes reading your adjustments easy. I have taken a lot of pictures in my lifetime of 68 years, with a lot of different makes and types of cameras and films. All camera systems are the result of a lot of compromises, and this one is something to dream for. Even with the advent of of the digital cameras, This film camera is exceptional! It was worth every cent I paid for it and the flash.

3 out of 5 stars Generally not worth the savings; go for the flash........2006-08-30

I work at a professional photofinishing lab, and I can attest to the quality of the film inside this camera. The Kodak Max Outdoor camera produces mediocre results in all but the brightest of sunlight.

Even for outdoor shots, a flash can really help boost image quality. As an example, using a flash when your subject is against a bright background will prevent your subject from appearing too dark.

Unless you are shooting landscapes or landmarks (with nobody in front of them), you should go for the extra versatility offered by the Kodak FunSaver or PowerFlash cameras.

4 out of 5 stars Might want to go for the flash version instead.......2000-08-12

I know this one is $3.00 less than the flash version, but I think you'll like the quality of the pictures with the flash disposable better. You can use the flash for outdoor pictures as well as for indoor ones, and they tend to come out better. Plus you have the option of using it indoors at the end of the day. Reasonable picture quality *for the price* - if you wanna take photos for National Geographic, you'll need to pay a bit more than $6.00 for your camera! :)

        1 out of 5 stars H-P Computers.......2003-01-04

In the past three years I have owned two different models of H-P computers and I was very sorry and disappointed with both of them. The first H-P I bought I took it right out of the box and it would not boot up nor would the replacement. I was assured by H-P that this was not usual. When I tried to upgrade to a larger hard drive I discoverd the BIOS would not support anthing bigger that a 4gig hard drive. I even took the thing to the local authorized H-P dealer and they could not upgrade the BIOS. Even after talking with the Tech support At H-P numerous times. The next H-P I purchased had a larger hard drive but the on board sound card and Video card made playing some of the better games impossible to do. The lack of an AGP slot and the lack of more PCI slots made my computing expiernce very frustrating. When my wife would be "on line" nine time out of ten she would be booted off the net and back to the desk top. So my advice to any one wanting to purchase an H-P computer better take a lot of Valium to deal with the frustration. These computers are for people who only look at the price tag, because yes they get a fast chip with junk components

This system won't give you top performance but it's a good value for what it is. I bought an HP Pavilion 2 1/2 years ago that was state of the art for the time, and I've been quite happy with the quality and features of the system. One nice thing HP did is their keyboard has two USB ports on each side of the keyboard, and two more ports on the back of the box, for a total of 4. This has been great for hooking up a couple of ZiO! flash ROM readers/writers that I use as "fat" floppies without having to add an extra USB hub.

This system improves even on that and has 6 USB ports, which is very convenient. You should be able to hook up your keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, and two other peripherals without having to add capacity.

If you need performance, this system probably isn't for you. But the 1.7 GHz celeron chip is more than adequate for most applications. The system lacks a DVD, but I have one on my system and I've only used it once. The only use for a DVD on a PC at this point is to watch movies, and unless you're a laptop user and watch them on plane flights, you probably won't need it. However, they'll be more useful when games start coming out on DVD which require the higher storage capacity.

The system does have a decent CD R/W drive, but the graphics is an Intel Extreme Graphics chipset and is onboard and not upgradeable, but it does have 32 megs of video RAM, which is good enough for many games, but not for some of the more demanding ones, like Unreal Tournament 2003. You should probably get a minimum of a 64 meg and probably 128 meg video card if you're going to run games like that at high settings, such as using full 32-bit color, greater than 640x480 resolution, a high level of world and texture detail, or special effects like dynamic lighting, trilinear filtering, halos, decals, and so on. Also, the onboard chipset is PCI and not AGP. AGP is about twice as fast as PCI in terms of bus speed.

One great use for this system for someone like me would be as a separate Red Hat Linux box, so I wouldn't have to double-boot my own PC. I might even buy one for that reason. This would probably also make a great Linux webserver for most applications.

One futher suggestion, I haven't checked them out in a while, but the eMachine boxes have also offered good machines in the past. I don't know how their current model would compare with this one, but I know they're still out there and you might compare features and price with them too.

Overall, however, a good quality system that would probably be more than adequate for most people's needs at a competitive price, and I'd actually give it 4.5 stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars At this price it would be hard to beat.......2002-12-28

This computer isn't perfect. The graphics are built in, can't be upgraded (no AGP slot), and not made to run the latest 3-D games at their highest settings. Their is also no DVD drive.

However at this price you are getting a fast CPU, decent graphics, and a CD-RW drive (much more useful than a DVD, who watches movies on their PC?). I think this is the best 'budget' PC out there.

If you can spend more, you should. If you can't or just don't want too, this computer will run anything other than high-end 3D games very well for years to come.
