Amazon.com Review

Some folks say they want a revolution--but not many are actually part of one. Wharfedale's LoudPanel wall speakers (also available with black wood frames) let you rid your home of obtrusive box-design speakers. A little more than an inch thick, the LoudPanels look exactly like a pair of picture frames and hang directly on the wall--you can even decorate them with your own images, whether paintings or commercial art prints. The package also comes with a small yet butt-kicking passive subwoofer that, to our admitted surprise, sounds mighty fine.

Flat speakers themselves are nothing particularly new--electrostatic and planar magnetic types have been around for ages. Like conventional cone drivers, those technologies act like pistons, pushing back and forth to create sound. (Electrostatics and planar magnetics, like conventional speakers, also need space to breathe, usually requiring at least three feet between speaker and wall.)

NXT, the company that developed the technology for Wharfedale's LoudPanel, has invented something entirely new--a speaker that, much like a piano, acts as a vibrating soundboard. Also like a piano, the LoudPanel is nondirectional, which means that room placement and seating arrangements are not especially critical when compared to normal speakers.

Finally, because random energy is emitted from both sides of the panels, the panels need no enclosure to contain the sound-killing out-of-phase air, making for very thin structures that can be placed right against the wall.

Hooking up this three-piece system is a cakewalk. Any concerns about the LoudPanels' sound quality were quickly addressed: the sound is remarkably clear rather than muddy, the high frequencies present and accounted for (though the treble isn't quite as extended as that from most conventional tweeters). And dynamic range? Very good, if less explosive than some box designs.

The LoudPanel's sonic strengths are its spacious presentation, fine detail, textural clarity, and the even balance between its panels and subwoofer. (The sub, in fact, can be tucked away in a corner or under a coffee table.) The LoudPanel is not quite as airy sounding as most conventional systems, but then most conventional speakers dominate whatever room they're in. And keep in mind that the LoudPanel sounds as good as or better than most comparably priced in-wall speakers.

The bottom line: If you hate having speakers in your room (or simply don't have room for speakers) but love music and home theater, Wharfedale's LoudPanel system has your name all over it. --Wayne Garcia

2 out of 5 stars Sound Quality.......2002-09-25

I bought this unit used from a friend of mine and regret the purchase. The speakers themselves sound very thin and the highs are too bright. I would definitely tell people to spend a bit more and buy something with more sound quality. There are many other manufacturers of small speakers that have a much better overall tonal quality.

4 out of 5 stars Loud Panels (application review).......2001-12-28

These are an excellent choice as a rear channel speaker. takes up no room and you can put a 16x20 poster print in them to cover the white panel. (this does not affect the sound). plastic frames...yes, but a little simulated wood-grain contact paper and an exacto knife and you got a psuedo-wood frame.

Now to the speakers themselves: Good sound with the PASSIVE subwoofer attached...without the sub, they sound thin and bright.

These don't even begin to sound right till you give them some real watts...(not a speaker for someone with a 50 wpc receiver). Now when they get linear you have a speaker (sub attached) that i would rate between a 3-4... If you add too many watts the sound worsens (rated at 70 watts, and thats pretty accurate). I tested these as both stereo speakers and HT rears. as fronts I wouldn't put them in a room bigger than 12x12. the sound is non-directional, so there is no soundstage, but they arent that bad for casual listening.

OK for home theater as back or side channels (where soundstage isn't an issue); they do a very good job...they dont need a symetrical placement like box speakers. as a rear speaker compared to other HT rear speakers, they rank a solid 4. If you have a high-powered system that you usually crank up...these will be a disappointment... But at 50-70 watts of input these will do a very good job... sure, they are 'inexpensive' looking, sorta 'inexpensive' sounding, but remember one key point...they *are* 'inexpensive'...and like others before have commented, they really are cool.

4 out of 5 stars Form and function.......2001-12-21

I was intrigued by the prospect of these virtually unnoticable speakers and the reviews I read seemed promising. The main complaint seemed to be lack of bass response despite claims from the manufctr. otherwise. I wasn't overly concerned because I could hook up a self-powered sub. They sound very good though I would not recommend them to someone who has very expensive sound tastes. However, they make great conversation pieces, also. If I hadn't purchased a high end satellite system, they would be perfect rear speakers. If you can find them for under [money], great buy...

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a bedroom surround sound system.......2001-05-16

I have 2 sets of these in my bedroom hooked up to an Onkyo DR-90 all in one Dvd stereo, with a wharfedale center. All who have heard it have been surprised at how great it sounds. I dont even need a powered sub with the 2 passive subs. A big tip for all, Do not adhear pictures to the loudpanels, instead use a spray adheasive and put your pics on cloth, this way you can easily change the artwork, it also looks more like finished framing. With a set-up like mine people would not even know that you have a full surround sound system, but crank it up and they will envy what they can't see.

3 out of 5 stars Wharfedale - Speakers as Art.......2000-08-02

The Loud Panels from Wharfedale allow the placement of the speaker to blend in with the livingroom. The technolgy behind them is interesting as it differs from the stndard cone speaker. The Loud Panel allows for a room with live acoustics (many surfaces) to sound better. The limitations come when the room has a larger number of people in it, or lots of SOFT surfaces, sofa, drapes etc.. These soft surfaces absorb the sound and make these not the ideal speakers for the room. The Speakers rated response doesn't really hit the lows as well as I would like, 30hz is the rated low end.

I do like the ability to place a poster in the frame and not detract from the sound (about 18"x19") and the subwoofer is small for easy placement.

If you are building a high end system these are not the speakers for you, but to give quality sound to a room that has decorative limitations you have the perfect set-up.

I found them to be pleasant to listen too and the flexibilty of placement was their strongest attribute (they sound good too).

    Amazon.com Review

If you're looking for a two-line multifunction telephone for your home or home office, the GE 2-Line digital messaging system is an ideal candidate. It provides conference calling and digital answering for each line, all in one elegantly designed desktop unit.

After plugging in the phone line and AC power adapter, a synthesized voice let us know the system had been activated. We found the unit sturdy and attractive with an organized layout. The digital answering functions are grouped together at the top of the unit, individual programming functions on either side of the numeric keypad, and line and speaker buttons at the bottom. Memory buttons are conveniently located next to a directory for at- a-glance reference. Basic functions, such as ringer volume and clock settings, can be found on either side of the unit.

Although programming the phone was not completely intuitive, we had no problem following the owner's manual. For example, to set the date, we held the time check/set button until the correct day appeared. We set the time by selecting the current hour and minute, pressed the star button to select AM or PM, and then pressed the time button once again to save.

We found the digital answering functions easy to use without the manual. The large buttons are clearly marked and straightforward. A voice mailbox is provided for each line. The synthesized voice guided us through much of the setup, such as recording a greeting and playing back messages. You can record different outgoing announcements for each line and can set them to play during specific hours, or you can activate a particular greeting remotely.

You can store up to 24 numbers for memory dialing and easily access them at the touch of a button. To store a number, you press the store/in button, enter the number to be stored, press the store/in button again, and select a memory location button. To clear a stored number, just skip the second step of the storing procedure.

For a three-way conversation, simply place the party on the first line on hold, call the second party on the other line and press the conference button. Other features include speakerphone, conversation record, and a distinctive ring for each line. --Emily Bakko

    Amazon.com Product Description

The GE two-line digital message system with speakerphone is perfect for the small home office. Its call conferencing permits three parties to be linked together, and the chain-dialing capability saves dialing time for making credit card calls. The do-not-disturb function turns off the speaker and takes a message on the second ring. You can also work both lines at once with the electronic hold button. The GE two-line phone accepts an optional battery for limited operation during power failures. This function saves recorded messages as well. A full-featured speakerphone option provides hands-free dialing, speaker volume control, microphone mute, and auto switching to the handset.

The digital answering system eliminates the need for cumbersome tapes that sometimes result in static or garbled messages. The outgoing announcement stops and resets automatically when any phone in your house is answered. Each line can have a separate outgoing announcement plus one default message. These outgoing messages are programmable to be active at different hours of the day. If you need to check messages away from home, the 10-touch remote function is easy to use with a programmable three-digit code.

            5 out of 5 stars Really good.......2004-01-03

The Hp pavilion 734n works just great. I have the games Call of Duty, Battlefield 1942, GTA Vice city, Halo, Max Payne 2,Max Payne, and Grand Theft Auto 3, on it and it runs them all flawlessly. The 80 gig hard drive is awsome. It comes with a great 512 megabites of RAM. and a real good graphics card Nvidia G-force MX 420 for games and it has two disk drives one a normal one with a 40x burner and the other a DVD rom drive. The only problem with the computer is the dinky speakers. consider upgrading for better speakers

4 out of 5 stars Totally worth its price!.......2003-02-18

This desktop pc is a really good deal for the price. Has a good ram to play any of the games or can be used for business purposes. HP Pavilion 734N is a Desktop PC that's geared for serious fun. It can tackle business, games, multimedia creativity, and more. This desktop is extremely efficient in usage.

This pc is very good for music and entertainment purposes such as watching dvd's. One of the advantages of this system is its massive 80 gig hardrive.
The anthlon processor scores a 9/10 on graphics but it heats up pretty fast.

I think its totally worth its price but if you are willing to spend a little more I think the Alienware Navigator Pro is a better deal.

4 out of 5 stars Does the job........2002-12-01

This system has three components: 1) a brush mounted on a CD for cleaning your CD/DVD laser lens, 2) a rotary compartment for cleaning the surface of CDs, and 3) a bottle of solvent. Although the equipment is not very sturdy, it does the job. When you put the laser-lens brush disk in your CD drive, it auto plays and give you information about the basics of drive cleaning (with language tracks in English, Spanish, and French). A track then runs that sweeps the brush over the laser lens.

The CD cleaner removes fingerprints and dirt from the surface of disks (including CDs, DVDs, Xbox games, etc.) It is important to realize that it DOES NOT REMOVE SCRATCHES. To clean a disk, you insert it in the compartment, spray solvent on the playing surface, close the lid, and rotate a lever about 20 times. The disk comes out with a small amount of residue that dries in a few seconds.

If you are cleaning a number of disks at once (which is most likely the case), you do not need to spray each disk. If you do, the cleaning pad will saturate, leaving an excess of solvent on the disk. It will evaporate, but will leave "streak marks." I found that spraying every second or third disks works fine.
