Everything I've been looking for........2007-09-16
After struggling for over a year with a Gateway M675 and a Dell Inspiron, and being dissatisfied with both, I went to the local Freys and checked out the HP DV2xxx series. Liked the key layout, finish, screen and I/O. Got it shipped overnight from Amazon (much cheaper than getting an eBay auction to ship overnight, and half the cost of local sales tax!), and had it the next day. Could not be happier - everything worked upon installation, the 14-inch screen is great and it's very portable and compact. Will get another 1G RAM for it. Vista takes a bit of getting used to (still prefer XP), but will strip out a lot of the time / space wasting features and get it a bit faster and more straightforward to use (I'm a Windows Classic throwback). The only drawback I can possibly find about it is the outside finish, which retains fingerprints and palmprits. I've heard there's a protector cover for it, which I'll look into. You do have to be a bit careful of hitting the touchpad with your palm while you type, but that's easily fixed. A joy to use!

Pros - Very fast, loads of storage space, the dv2420us is actually a 200gb hard drive albeit running at 4200RPM. Light weight, flexible, included webcam is a plus. Bluetooth & WiFi works extremely well. Light Scribe is an added touch
Cons - Not a gaming notebook..graphics card is low-end, gets very hot if used on lap, included battery is only about 1-1.5 hrs long. Windows Vista takes an incredible amount of time to boot, I clocked 4 minutes on a start-up.
Baseline - If you are looking for a notebook for school/office work/home/multimedia you get a great deal here. I avert my startup problems with Vista by putting the computer in hibernate mode and at the push of the power button, then it starts up in about 20 seconds. Also as with most electronics nowadays, this notebook runs hot. Use the notebook on a desk or if you have to use it on your lap, put it on a book so it gets good ventilation or it becomes very hot and sluggish.
Good for the price.......2007-07-29
The specs are very good for the price with this one. The hard dive is 200 gb even though Amazon's title reads 160. The screen and keyboard are great. The speakers are similar to every other laptop. Having 2 gb of ram is very good since vista home premium combined with integrated graphics really uses a lot of ram and system resources. The GeForce 6150 works well with games. I have tried the following and they all work good at medium or high settings: Doom 3, Warcraft 3, Red Alert 2, Empire Earth 2, Star Wars Jedi Academy, and Jedi Outcast, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. 1 game did not work which was the original doom, I think this is a vista compatibility problem and may be fixed by updating the video card drives which I have not done yet. I played all those games though without updating the video card drivers, newer drivers are available for the motherboard/video card on nvidia's website. The battery manager is simple to use and set up well, you can simply select your preference, to conserve power or high performance etc. HP built in the power settings but, you can customize them easily if you don't want to use the built in HP options. The lighting is very good on the keyboard. There is a on off indicator for the mouse and wireless.
I don't like the way connection ports are on the sides and on the front is the audio. This is kind of visually unattractive. I don't like having wires for my usb mouse, speakers, lan, and ac adaptor going out all sides of the computer. The fan is in the back. I think it would be SO MUCH better to have the fan on the side and all the ports on the very back. This would make it a perfect design layout, and I'd give 5 instead of 4 stars. Another thing is the mouse pad is at a bad location because when I type, my hand goes across the mouse which jiggles the curser around. HP solved this problem by putting a button at the top of the mouse pad that you can press to disable it, or a disable while you type feature which works ok. I use these features when I type. The other issue with vista and this computer is that it's just filled with junk I don't want and don't need, advertisements and pop ups are nonstop form the time you turn on your computer from both HP and Microsoft. All of these can be disabled within windows, using the control panel. After uninstalling built in junk software, trial versions etc. and disabled a lot of windows pop ups and start up programs, its running really great. There is a built in partition on the hard dive which is used to back things up and as a recovery drive. There is an option on the start menu to get rid of the partition to just make the one entire size c drive. This is what I did. I also turned off all the system restore features which constantly suck system resources for stuff you don't need. It works best for me to simply back things up on dvds. A final note: this computer does not come with restore disks, you have to make your own. This is very simple to do, just follow the on screen instructions when windows starts up. You will need 1 blank dvd dual layer.

How to pick between the models.......2007-09-06
Since there are eight different models here to choose from I'll restrain myself from talking about any specifically and try to help you tell the difference between the specs of each.
Processor: Core 2 Duo processors are better than the slightly older AMD Turion technology. The Core 2 Duo's larger L2 cache does partially explain their advantage, but the difference in front side bus is totally negligable so if you expect 1600mHz speed, sorry, it will only be as fast as the RAM and most machines in this price range have RAM with 667mHz. If the RAM was faster 800mHz RAM than I'm pretty sure they would advertise that fact. However, with dual core processors you only need a lot of power if you're doing multiple tasks at one time, so if that's not a concern go with the cheaper AMD models.
RAM: Highly important with any version of Windows Vista. Even with 1 GB the system may hiccup so 2 GB will make a big difference. Still, there are alternatives for people who can only afford 1 GB such as ready boost (a new feature of Vista) that allows you to use a thumb drive as RAM but this is by no means a substitute for having real RAM that goes much faster than flash memory and most cheap USBs will not work since anything slower than a good high speed flash drive might even slow down your system. Also Microsoft says Ready Boost only really helps systems low on RAM (1GB or less) and that exceeding the ratio of 1:1 in system RAM vs. USB flash memory will have no benefits.
Hard Drive: Get however much you think you need. I always use an external since its so cheap though. Some of the models here though run at 4200rpm speeds rather than the standard 5400. That will mean longer load times for programs because it will take longer for your computer to get the info from the hard drive.
DVD/CD Drive: Pretty standard now days. Light scribe, though, is pretty useless since you need to buy special discs that I can never find on sale.
Graphics: Try not to get a model with Integrated graphics like the Intel 950 or nVidia's better but still integrated 6150. Vista really requires a dedicated graphics card (it doesn't matter that much what card exactly because there is only a huge performance gap between integrated and the more expensive dedicated cards). The only reason you wouldn't like a dedicated nVidia or ATI card (besides the nVidia 6150) is if you plan on being on the road almost all the time because dedicated cards do use more power.
Exterior: There are plenty of ports here so I never have a problem. I also liked the two headphone jacks they have in the front :) and the screen looks great. I found the speakers to be more than adequate to pump out my tunes. The touch pad worked well too and comes with a nice button to turn it on or off so you don't brush it when you type.
Battery life: The 6 cell battery was only mediocre for a laptop this size. HP does offer 12 cell batteries which theoretically will have twice the longevity. The only problem if you buy this battery for around a $100 is that it sticks out a little in the back and weighs twice as much.
Operating System: Vista at this time is not better than XP. In the future it probably will be but right now it runs slower, takes ten times more hard drive space, has only marginally better security and there are no worthwhile new functions (it looks prettier though). The only way you can choose something besides Vista (which you may have to if you work a lot with software that isn't compatible yet) is to go with Dell notebooks. Oh yes, and if you're going with a economic PC also watch out because Vista has high hardware requirements.
Service: HP sucks. End of story. Then again, everyone in the PC industry is terrible now days so its not like they're worse than the competition sadly. In general, just keep praying it doesn't brake.
Final Note: You may also want to check out the HP website and their dv6500 customizable models. Amazon is great but sometimes they keep selling old computer models too long and if you buy an older model the performance you get for the same price suffers. Generally a computer's value drops by about 10% for every six months so try to get new models not old ones.

We've owned many different laptops over the years, Dell, Sony, and Gateways. My daughter was heading to college and wanted a very high-end HP Notebook complete with TV tuner. It sounded great and we even bought the extended 2-year on-site warranty from HP to make sure if there was a problem, she would have the service she needed while on campus.
What a Mistake! What HP provides for this many hundreds of dollars borders on criminal. After 2.5 months of issues and calls, the hard disk was finally recognized as a problem (the one we bought had 2-160 GB drives). The computer is only three months old. Eagerly we called the "extended" service numbers only to find out the 3-day turnaround is 9-10 business days and you need to mail it in to them. While we clearly had a document stating the "3-day" turnaround complete with pick and delivery, someone obviously offshore stated that we must be mistaken and our only choice was to mail it in and get it back in 2 weeks or they could send us an unformated disk and we can do it ourselves! If we wanted a new hard disk, we needed to give them a credit card before they would ship a new drive out!
Let's see, my college freshman was going reformat a new drive, for a new computer under warranty, covered by an extended warranty because that's how special HP believes its customers are!
NEVER AGAIN should anyone else be subject to this poor customer service and breach of responsibilities that we suffered at the hands of HP customer service.

The battery falls out of this laptop whenever you pick it up. I took the first one back thinking it was broken but come to find out it is the way they are made. Since I had purchased this one specificaly for the portibility I am not happy about this feature which seems to me would have been very easy to prevent. I have to duck tape the battery in in order to move from place to place. Doesn't that look nice? Our previous laptop was a tobisha and I wish now I had purchased a new tobisha instead

I'm one of the HP notebook users and I don't wanna to use any HP notebook anymore till I saw the new pavillons.. The pricing was excellent and decided to buy one for my wife.. After getting the products I get the rebate from amazon directly but it was diffucult to get from HP. I provided everything that they requested and send them the documents with postal mail however they didn't get it and if they don't get it they are not responsible to provide me this rebate with any information.. I can't believe it..!!! After a while my notebook begins to work slowly, since I'm a technical guy I understood that there is smthng wrong with the main processor.. My mistake was to buy a HP again.. :( I won't recommend anyone this new pavillons..

How to pick between the models.......2007-09-06
Since there are eight different models here to choose from I'll restrain myself from talking about any specifically and try to help you tell the difference between the specs of each.
Processor: Core 2 Duo processors are better than the slightly older AMD Turion technology. The Core 2 Duo's larger L2 cache does partially explain their advantage, but the difference in front side bus is totally negligable so if you expect 1600mHz speed, sorry, it will only be as fast as the RAM and most machines in this price range have RAM with 667mHz. If the RAM was faster 800mHz RAM than I'm pretty sure they would advertise that fact. However, with dual core processors you only need a lot of power if you're doing multiple tasks at one time, so if that's not a concern go with the cheaper AMD models.
RAM: Highly important with any version of Windows Vista. Even with 1 GB the system may hiccup so 2 GB will make a big difference. Still, there are alternatives for people who can only afford 1 GB such as ready boost (a new feature of Vista) that allows you to use a thumb drive as RAM but this is by no means a substitute for having real RAM that goes much faster than flash memory and most cheap USBs will not work since anything slower than a good high speed flash drive might even slow down your system. Also Microsoft says Ready Boost only really helps systems low on RAM (1GB or less) and that exceeding the ratio of 1:1 in system RAM vs. USB flash memory will have no benefits.
Hard Drive: Get however much you think you need. I always use an external since its so cheap though. Some of the models here though run at 4200rpm speeds rather than the standard 5400. That will mean longer load times for programs because it will take longer for your computer to get the info from the hard drive.
DVD/CD Drive: Pretty standard now days. Light scribe, though, is pretty useless since you need to buy special discs that I can never find on sale.
Graphics: Try not to get a model with Integrated graphics like the Intel 950 or nVidia's better but still integrated 6150. Vista really requires a dedicated graphics card (it doesn't matter that much what card exactly because there is only a huge performance gap between integrated and the more expensive dedicated cards). The only reason you wouldn't like a dedicated nVidia or ATI card (besides the nVidia 6150) is if you plan on being on the road almost all the time because dedicated cards do use more power.
Exterior: There are plenty of ports here so I never have a problem. I also liked the two headphone jacks they have in the front :) and the screen looks great. I found the speakers to be more than adequate to pump out my tunes. The touch pad worked well too and comes with a nice button to turn it on or off so you don't brush it when you type.
Battery life: The 6 cell battery was only mediocre for a laptop this size. HP does offer 12 cell batteries which theoretically will have twice the longevity. The only problem if you buy this battery for around a $100 is that it sticks out a little in the back and weighs twice as much.
Operating System: Vista at this time is not better than XP. In the future it probably will be but right now it runs slower, takes ten times more hard drive space, has only marginally better security and there are no worthwhile new functions (it looks prettier though). The only way you can choose something besides Vista (which you may have to if you work a lot with software that isn't compatible yet) is to go with Dell notebooks. Oh yes, and if you're going with a economic PC also watch out because Vista has high hardware requirements.
Service: HP sucks. End of story. Then again, everyone in the PC industry is terrible now days so its not like they're worse than the competition sadly. In general, just keep praying it doesn't brake.
Final Note: You may also want to check out the HP website and their dv6500 customizable models. Amazon is great but sometimes they keep selling old computer models too long and if you buy an older model the performance you get for the same price suffers. Generally a computer's value drops by about 10% for every six months so try to get new models not old ones.
If you ever need service...think again!.......2007-09-04
We've owned many different laptops over the years, Dell, Sony, and Gateways. My daughter was heading to college and wanted a very high-end HP Notebook complete with TV tuner. It sounded great and we even bought the extended 2-year on-site warranty from HP to make sure if there was a problem, she would have the service she needed while on campus.
What a Mistake! What HP provides for this many hundreds of dollars borders on criminal. After 2.5 months of issues and calls, the hard disk was finally recognized as a problem (the one we bought had 2-160 GB drives). The computer is only three months old. Eagerly we called the "extended" service numbers only to find out the 3-day turnaround is 9-10 business days and you need to mail it in to them. While we clearly had a document stating the "3-day" turnaround complete with pick and delivery, someone obviously offshore stated that we must be mistaken and our only choice was to mail it in and get it back in 2 weeks or they could send us an unformated disk and we can do it ourselves! If we wanted a new hard disk, we needed to give them a credit card before they would ship a new drive out!
Let's see, my college freshman was going reformat a new drive, for a new computer under warranty, covered by an extended warranty because that's how special HP believes its customers are!
NEVER AGAIN should anyone else be subject to this poor customer service and breach of responsibilities that we suffered at the hands of HP customer service.
By another brand! Stay away from HP!

The only problem is that the laptop came with a 12 cell battery and is very big.

The battery falls out of this laptop whenever you pick it up. I took the first one back thinking it was broken but come to find out it is the way they are made. Since I had purchased this one specificaly for the portibility I am not happy about this feature which seems to me would have been very easy to prevent. I have to duck tape the battery in in order to move from place to place. Doesn't that look nice? Our previous laptop was a tobisha and I wish now I had purchased a new tobisha instead
I can't be able to get rebate from HP.........2007-08-29
I'm one of the HP notebook users and I don't wanna to use any HP notebook anymore till I saw the new pavillons.. The pricing was excellent and decided to buy one for my wife.. After getting the products I get the rebate from amazon directly but it was diffucult to get from HP. I provided everything that they requested and send them the documents with postal mail however they didn't get it and if they don't get it they are not responsible to provide me this rebate with any information.. I can't believe it..!!! After a while my notebook begins to work slowly, since I'm a technical guy I understood that there is smthng wrong with the main processor.. My mistake was to buy a HP again.. :( I won't recommend anyone this new pavillons..

Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (though no standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Camera Problems.......2007-09-16
All-in-all this is a good system. I'm happy with it. Although the camera doesn't work properly in AIM or AIM Pro. It crashes after less than a minute in Yahoo messenger. After doing searches on the internet I found that a lot of people have had this problem. But I have found no working solution.
An Impressive Computer.......2007-09-16
I've read the reviews on this computer and thought them a bit unfair. This is a great machine for the price.
The AMD processor is very speedy. I have an Dell M1710 of 2.0ghz, and the tx1220 is faster or as fast. So also with the graphics card, which surprised me. I can run all the games I want. the 1220 is a touchscreen machine and can do all the things a WACOM touchpad can do. HP has done this by requiring a bit more pressure, your fingernail, if you want something to work. The handwriting recognition is much better than Tablet 2005, but you have to invest the minimal time (29 minutes) in the handwriting recognition software that comes with it. You don't have to spend the 20+ minutes all at once. The wireless card is an "N" card and is alot more sensitive than any other card for picking up wireless. The screen is great. Never had the fuzziness other people complain of. The Altec Lansing speakers are very good also.
Now, the cons. Any computer with high performance trades off battery life. Buy a second battery or wait for an afermarket 12 cell battery to give you 6+ hours of battery life. You'll get three or so, with the battery given you. Windows Vista is an ambiguous advantage. It's not like the Apple commercial, but it's quite different than previous Windows versions. It's better, but it's different and requires getting used to. I heard somebody talk about bloatware. Yes there's about 10 gb worth, but you can figure it out yourself, what you want and dont.
Look for a convertible tablet with a 64 bit processer, 2 gb of RAM (upgradable), a 200 gb hard drive, that had a lightscribe DVD, all in 4.5 lbs., for under 1300 dollars, you woon't do better.
Does not have IEEE1394 aka Firewire aka iLink.......2007-09-08
Despite the fact that on 08 Sep 2007 the item description for the HP tx1220us still clearly states that it has "1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals" it DOES NOT have this port.
It has an ExpressCard/34 slot that can apparently accommodate a card offering such a port, but neither the PC itself nor the Expansion Port 3 offers IEEE 1394 capability according to HP documentation. This was a problem for me since I plan to use the PC to do some video work with a camcorder via IEEE 1394.
Via e-mail I contacted Amazon and asked them to provide me with an ExpressCard with IEEE 1394, or to allow me to return the PC without a restocking fee. The response was that they would not give me the card free and they WOULD charge a restocking fee up to 15%.
So I called on the phone and it took all of five minutes to get the situation resolved. They will send me the card and credit my account for it. I forgot to ask about changing the item description, so my review title should warn others.
Besides this issue, as far as I can tell the item IS as advertised and a very nice little machine indeed.
HP Pavilion TX1220US 12.1" Notebook PC.......2007-09-07
Purchased this PC for a business trip to Europe. I wanted a small/light unit for ease of carrying on airplanes and around airports. I have completed the business trip and the PC has proven itself to be a very solid performer and was everything I could have wanted. Very light, easily carried, and its performance on all tasks was excellent. Will certainly look at another member of this line when it is time to replace it. I strongly recommend this PC to anyone who needs a small/light PC for business travel. It is plenty fast with more than enough memory and hard drive space to meet any reasonable needs on the road. With a docking unit, this Notepad PC could be a very functional Desktop unit--especially with a separate 17-22" LCP Display. Notepad feature works well, but was not the reason I purchased the unit. If you are looking for a high performance gaming PC this is probably not the machine for you, but for business travel, it is a solid performer.

I received my tx1220 today, it is a great laptop, i love it. I took it to Circuit City and for 39 bucks, they optimized it, removed all the junk for me. This was a good purchase.
