Great mic for recording voice - clips on loud recordings.......2007-09-25

I have used this mic for various spoken word recordings and it's been great. You get a really clean input and it's got a good range.

Unfortunately I tried to record my jazz big band (20 people = really loud) and it clipped immediately. Just the drummer tapping his snare for the count off was clipped. So, you'll have to look elsewhere if you're wanting to record any kind of sound louder than just talking.

I still give this mic a 4 star because obviously it's not meant for recording live music. At the price it's a great mic for podcasting or any other spoken word type work.

Very Good, Reasonably Priced.......2007-09-13

This mic was recognized by Windows XP as soon as I plugged it in. All I had to do was to push its obvious power button (which lights up when the mic is on) and I had clear Skype calls while using a PC speaker less than 1 foot away from the unit.

No problems after a year. The lighted 'on' button is a useful feature. Other mics have not worked nearly as well. Strongly recommended.

Don't speak into the microphone.......2007-09-11

To minimize pops during recording, speak with mouth a few inches from microphone at 90 degree angle (sideways). I purchased this to record announcements for a computer controlled message center on the Mac. Sound quality is adequate and Apple Speech Recognition commands are recognized. The USB device must be selected as the input device within the Sound preferences; while there, increase the input volume to about 75 percent. (If the mike is unplugged, it must me reselected in the preferences.) I use GarageBand to further increase volume and edit recordings. This may not be suitable for recording live songs but for general speech recognition from a cross-platform device, it's a great value and looks sleek and modern.

Great for Skype/MMORPG Use.......2007-09-06

I use this mic with Skype to talk to family and to play MMORPG's and love it. I've had it for over a year and it has given me no trouble at all, is sturdy, and picks up our voices from 6 - 8 feet away very well. It does a good job of canceling incoming voices but we do have to turn the game sounds down really low. That's not a big deal because having the environmental sounds up too loud makes it hard to hear what people are saying anyway. We have this mic hooked up to a PC which is part of our home theater, and it stands about 2 feet in front of the speakers and facing away from them towards us. It has some problems with noise if you put it right in the TV/speaker area, like sitting on the TV stand or on top of a speaker but I don't think any mic would work properly there. It's a lot better than some of the cheaper versions I've had, but is still very economical. The mute button is a really nice feature... it's lit up and easy to find when you want a minute of privacy, or if you are listening-only in a conference call and want to make a quick comment.

Not Impressed.......2007-09-05

This microphone requires you to be within a few inches of the tip in order to get anything to be heard, however, then you also get lots of pops and breath noises, making it virtually unusable.

I'm impressed........2007-07-18

I switched to this when my headset/boom microphone died, and was surprised to find that it worked better. I've got a soft voice, but I was even able to turn off the mic boost/gain in Windows' volume controls.

The mic sits 18-24" from my mouth (in front of the monitor, overhanging the keyboard) and picks me up loud and clear. I've hears nothing but positive comments from other Ventrilo/Teamspeak/Skype users. If I raise my voice I can talk at it from a few feet away.

This Logitech Microphone does an exceptional job. It is stylish and the mute button right at hand. I would order this product again if the need arose.

You have to speak right into it.......2007-03-13

The only problem with this microphone is that you have to speak right into it. I wanted something hands free, where I could talk over the internet with friends while doing something else in the same room -perhaps like a speakerphone. This microphone won't let you do that. If you move your mouth more than 6 inches away from the mic, the people on the other end can barely hear you. If you want something really hands (and head) free, try something different. The Logitech Webcam/Mic has great range, but it gives a lot of static (randomly, not due to noise...)

Nice mic for the price.......2007-03-01

I purchased this mic to use with my laptop computer (which has a built-in sound card) in order to record interviews with my children and stories for them to listen to later. We have already had a lot of fun with it for the $10 investment. It works fine for my low-end applications. I plugged it in and it worked right away. My voice sounded nice and clear, and was easy to understand, although a bit thin. I use the mic with sound-recording freeware I downloaded from the internet. The mic is not sensitive. I have to be fairly close when recording and set the software volume control as high as it will go. However, I was able to record in the same room that my son was watching television, and none of it came through on the recording. I have noticed that when saying certain consonants (especially h's, p's and c's), the mic picks up my breath and causes the recording to "clip." I am still learning the subtleties of positioning the mic and adjusting the software controls. I also recorded a bit of violin playing. It sounds clear, but definitely loses much of the richness, so I wouldn't recommend it for that kind of use.

Wow, what can I say about this product that hasn't already been said. This product although serving its purpose is quaint to say the least. The microphone itself was extremly low and I had to yell into it in order to receive an audible voice that I could hear on my speakers. Overall, don't pay over $10 for this item as it is not worth more than that.

Bare bones, but works great for Google Talk........2006-01-17

We bought this for use on Google Talk. The voice comes over clear and the background noise seems to be held to a minimum.

Simply Plug and Play - no additonal software comes with it, nor is there a need for it. All you have to do is plug it in to the microphone jack (sometimes conveniently colored pink) on the back/front of your computer -- it should start working imediatly.

Mine came with two bases: one for your desk and one that you can stick to the side or top of your monitor (or wherever.)

The cord is plenty long enough for you to be able to plug into a computer that may not be next to your monitor.

It even comes with a short troobleshooting guide (which could be useful for those that have NO experience finding the microphone volume on your computer.)

If you are looking for an inexpensive way to get your voice over the Internet, then I HIGHLY recommend this product. If you are looking for high-quality voice recording you may want to look for something more expensive.

Minus one star for the desk stand. If you pivot the mic it tends to fall out of the stand (which is weird because you have to push hard to get it back in.) Not meant to be a true pivot point or moved around alot. Just set it and forget it.

Great for speech recognition.......2005-05-29

This review is for a similar product that I bought at Wal-mart. It looks very close to the one in the picture. I will be using this microphone for speech recognition and so far, so good. I am very happy with this microphone.

I have bought two of these both of them do not work now. It is a piece of junk. If your life depended on you using this don't it will short out on you.

Sooner or later............2006-03-19

I knew the reviews before buying one...I enjoyed the huge memory space...It worked flawlessly, right up until suddenly it started making a bad noise. The only thing worse than losing an image, is losing hundreds of them. It worked for a little over a year, being used on a sporatic basis. I wouldn't recommend anyone buys them ever.

It worked for me, but don't buy one.......2005-08-16

I owned a 1GB IBM Microdrive for just about 3 and a half years when just yesterday it died on me. Granted, that's a long time to have a microdrive, and I used it HARD for that long without any problems. I had no complaints during its lifespan. But truth be told, their reputation for unreliability precedes them. I completely expected it to fry a lot sooner, and lived in constant fear of something happening. When you're taking pictures, you want them to be SECURE, something this microdrive can't guarantee you. I was lucky, and didn't lose any pictures. I was lucky, and enjoyed a lengthy life with my microdrive. But don't rely on luck, which is what you're forced to do when you buy one.

Out of 3, does one work?.......2003-08-05

So I loved these when they first came out, and we used them in the D60 for several projects. During one of the events the drive developed a strange noise and shortly died mid-shoot. Not a good time. The noise was rather like an old turboprop plane starting up, speeding up and slowing down. We were unable to salvage any data off it.

We got that one replaced under warranty and the new one arrived and worked fine for about 6 shoots before succombing to an early death just like the last.

We currenty have the third one in and it is working fine but we now have three 1 gig Lexar's in spare because we can't count on these on critical applications.

As random storage I suspect this is probably OK, but if you NEED to not lose the data, look elsewhere.

Just hope it doesn't fail.......2003-07-10

I purchased mine and it failed after 10 months. I had never dropped it or abused it. I have sent it in for service, and have been waiting for about 6 weeks now. Their support keeps pushing the return date back due to constraints.
It may have a one year warantee, but don't count on ever seeing a replacment, I am definately not impressed with the service. I would recommend using larger compact flash cards 256/512mb in its place. It may cost more but it will be more reliable.
That will be the last 1GB IBM Microdrive that I will purchase.

Excellent value, durability.......2003-03-22

When I bought the 1G Microdrive, it had the highest capacity of all memory card, not to mention the biggest bang for the buck. A year and thousand of pictures later, this is still largely true, though the new 1G CF cards may prove to be the better deal. A big concern for hard drives is, of course, durability. My Microdrive has taken a lot of bangs and jars, and has even been dropped a few times, but comes through unscathed. The other concern is speed. When compared to a CF card, there's no noticeable slowdown after taking pictures, but retrieving files from the Microdrive takes just a little longer. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this purchase.
