1 out of 5 stars Very poor range.......2006-07-17

Great radio but I got .3 miles flat land with trees range.

I though more of moto
oh well

Beware !!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Poor Range.......2006-03-27

The range is actually 1 Mile only. Its not 10 Mile Range that has mentioned on the product.we were disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Really nice radios but awful audio reception quality.......2006-01-03

The price is a bargain for the spec (Standard GMRS/FRS channels + NOAA weather radio, vibrate, earbuds/PTT mic, battery packs and charger). They're rugged looking units, and work on 3xAA size batteries, which gives a potentially longer operating time than radios with AAA's.

However, my main gripe with these things is the quality of the audio output when receiving transmissions from another walkie talkie. Just terrible, in my opinion. Compared against my cheap-o 'Columbia' FRS units ($30 for the full kit), speech from the Mot T6510s is just about unintelligible. I keep having to ask people to repeat what they said and put my ear right up against the speaker. Using the earpiece doesn't improve matters much.

Transmitting from a T6510 to another brand is fine, so it's not the microphones. Receiving NOAA messages is also quite audible; but that's a clearly spoken, recorded message. I think the problem is that the AF section seems to only chuck out a very high, squawky, mid-range tone whereas my other units have a much flatter, softer response. If I didn't like the look and features so much, I'd have taken them back for a refund long ago.

The other thing I don't like is the rotary volume control, protruding from the top (same as most Motorola radios). I find that when worn on the belt clip, clothing makes the knob rotate back to the 'min' position and I find myself continually checking that the volume's turned up while on a walk. The vibrate feature has come in handy there.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable range.......2005-11-11

I was a bit reluctant at buying these radios for being only available in this special package. I could not find information on them as separated units, not even in Motorola's web pages (though they look exactly the same as the T6500). Finally, the price and the number of accesories made it a very good offer so I decided to take the risk. Besides, I never believed the 10 miles range promised since they were 1W units, same as many others that are supposed to be only 5 to 7 miles. However, to my surprise, in a trip to Easter Island I managed to sustain a normal conversation with a partner that was 18 Km away from me (about 11 miles). I am sure of this because I measured the distance with my GPS. The conditions were optimal though, as I was at the top of a hill (400m high) and the other radio was at sea level with no obstructions in between, other than being inside a car.
I must admit that I was very impressed by this result and I can recommend them to anybody. They are not the smallest nor the lightest GMRS radios you can find, but you will not be disappointed. The radios look good quality and the weight, slightly heavier than average, indicate a solid construction and good internal shielding. Battery duration is similar to other Motorola models. I have had many other models of Motorola FRS radios since 2001 (T280SLK, T6250, T5620), but these are clearly the best of them.

5 out of 5 stars These are the Motorolas to get!.......2007-09-18

I've used many models of Motorola FRS radios, and I think these are the best. They're slightly larger than most because they hold 4 AA batteries, but they perform better than most others. Also, because of the slightly larger size, the speaker is a little bigger and sounds fuller, which helps you to hear incoming transmissions better. Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Great product, convenient........2007-07-16

The radios were purchased for a school to have in their classrooms. The individual docking/charging stations are hard to find but Amazon carried them and they were resonably priced.

2 out of 5 stars Get another two way radio from Motorola.......2007-05-23

I recommend getting a Radio that has internal chargeable batteries; this one will run out of battery when you need it most.

5 out of 5 stars A great set of radios - Buy them and Use them.......2007-05-06

First let me say I have extensive experience with handheld FRS/GMRS radios. I've owned them for years, and have the opportunity to test frequently as I live in a warm weather state and camp/fish/kayak/hike often
.

Right off the bat, I will say most of my familiarity has been with smaller AAA sized units, and these Motorola T7400 units are far and away the BEST I HAVE EVER TOUCHED. The clarity of transmission REALLY impressed me - very clear when compared side to side with other units.

As an editorial comment I'd just like to say how really fraudulent it is that the government allows these radio manufacturers to make outlandish claims as to the range of their units. It seems like each company and each new model tries to one-up the previous. 8 miles, 12 miles, 18 miles!! Pure unadulterated b.s., and the problem with that is that people set their expectations unreasonably high, and are invariably disappointed with their purchases. What marketing GENIUS (sarcasm) decided to be the first to make an unsubstatiated claim of range? Hang him by his toes! Imagine if we allowed car manufacturers to advertise their vehicles as having a 0-60 speed of 2.9 seconds and then found out the 3,000 pound car has a 2 cylinder engine? Sure, 0-60 in 3.9 seconds when dropped from a helicopter!! ** end rant

Now on to my opinion of these units. Really really stellar. Again, with the above in mind, remember not to set your expectations too high. These units are big, measuring 9" from bottom of the unit to the tip of the antenna. BUT THAT IS A GOOD THING. It allows three things that IMHO really help these to have better transmission and reception downrange. 1. AA batteries put out more power than AAA batteries, and will allow more usage per charge, 2. The larger antenna allows a better 'throw' of the 2w of generated transmission power. 3. A larger speaker than smaller AAA models, allowing for plenty of volume upside.

You'll notice I said AA batteries, and didn't mention the NIMH charging pack...I believe that will put out good power and will ease charging of these units, but personally, I prefer a good set of NIMH rechargeable AA batteries with a fresh top-off for best results.

Now to range - this was a very informal test, but it was as controlled as I could make it. The first night I received these units, I tested them vs. a pair of Midland AAA radios with an advertised range of 16 miles. Freshly charged Rayovac Hybrid NIMH rechargeables went into each, and I set both sets of units to GMRS channel 21. My 'test' here was done in my neigborhood, a densely populated area in Phoenix where 80+% of the households have WiFi internet systems, Cordless Home phones, etc. Not that they should interfere with this frequency, but it is a lot of a electronic 'noise' to burn through. Long story short, the Midlands were static-filled by the end of my street - about 200yds away, but the Motorolas stayed crystal clear. I was really impressed with the CLARITY of these units, and continued further and further away.

I ended the test @1.5 miles due to my tester getting cold from the high winds we were having. At 1.5 miles in a dense neighborhood, with high winds, and me inside a vehicle, these things were only beginning to get any static whatsoever, but transmissions were more than readable. When I stepped out of the Xterra, the signal regained clarity, and there was only the slightest hint of static induced by the range. What this means to me, is in a true outdoor application, I am sure to get all the range I need. 12 miles? Hmmm, probably not, but unless I'm in a crag in some canyon, I'm sure these will throw good signal a few miles, and in an open water situation or two vehicles road-tripping, I'll bet the range will be that much further.

As far as features, this has all I can foresee needing. Voice activated transmission and Weather Band are great reasons to keep these around when out in the bush or on the water. The belt clip, meh...I haven't put it to any stress, but I could see how it might be susceptible to breakage due to its high profile. If mine break, I'll call Motorola and have them send me the new lower profile ones others here have mentioned.

As for the person who said they are incompatible with other radios, due respect, but that is completely false. The problem lies in that the channel security code on these is set to '1' initially from the factory, which if changed to '0' will allow complete compatibility. Let me explain. Yes, this radio has 22 channels, but within each channel you can select any of 99 'security codes' - which is a misnomer. These do not make your conversations more secure, rather what they do is screen out other conversations on the same channel. Your transmissions will still be received by all other radios on that channel, you just will not be able to hear their conversations. Word of advice - when selecting a channel to use, listen first...if anyone else in your immediate area is using that channel, PICK ANOTHER CHANNEL. Now, if your buddy has a radio from another make and you both want to be compatible, set all units to the desired channel, then simply push your menu button the number of times required to change the security code (2 times I think), and when it highlights that little security code number (smaller number in the top right of the display), hit your down arrow and change that to 0. When on 0, you are disabling the feature and can hear all transmissions on that channel.

Well I hope this helps some. Remember there generally is a trade off on unit size vs. range, so if you want a radio that's the size of your thumbnail, don't expect it to throw signal 32 miles downrange. These units are sizeable, but still not unweildy at all, still pocketable and the larger batteries will allow you to have better reception and longer usage per charge.

Don't shy away from buying these units - with reasonable expectations of range, you will be very pleased.

3 out of 5 stars talkabout t7400 (yellow Ni-MH).......2006-07-04

These radios are overall good quality ( but not as good as the old t6220's). The first day that I had them one of the latches onthe belt clip broke. I called up the help line and got a new one(seven days later i might add) only to see that this one was smaller and thiner than the one that came with the radios- this tells me that they (the company) fixed the issue of the belt clip, it works better despite the fact that the teeth on the radio are too small and the radio fall off. The box says that the unites are "field cirtified" (6 miles over open land). I feel that these radios are too big for the range and too big for the shortage of Wattage ( watts is what gets your signel herd over long distances and perced through most obsrtuctions people). I feel thay should buy these radios if you are just want an introduction unite and don't want to spend alot of money.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars So-so radio.......2007-03-30

As other reviewers have said, this two way radio is not worthy of the Motorola name. The only reason I'm still using mine is that I bought it for $25 (after tax) as part of a damaged two radio package. This radio will go through a fresh set of batteries very quickly, and certain channels can only receive from FRS radios (channels 1-7).

The T7200 would be a better buy, if you can still find it. The T7400 is similar to the T7100 without its shortcomings, but still can't use channel 1-7.

5 out of 5 stars Very functional!.......2005-09-13

Depending on the use you would give to the radios they are very functional and cool to use. I use them with my informatic team and we work in a four stories building. Great reception in about 4 kilometers. Great accesory!

4 out of 5 stars Nice radios for traveling.......2005-01-18

I recently got these radios for Christmas and I am pretty impressed. They are easy to use with very clear sound. I previously had a set of Motorola 2 mile radios and in comparison, the T7100Rs work 100x better. I just got back from a vacation in Disney World and found these radios to be extremely handy. In the group of people we were traveling with we had my two 7-miles, and 4 2-miles. No matter where you were in the park you could always hear who had the 7-mile radios which wasn't always the case with the 2-miles. The only draw back was that they were just a little bit bitter than the normal Motorola radios. If you are buying these radios expecting to use them over any 7 mile terrain, don't. When they test the distance, they do so in some flat part of the dessert. I think these radios are great and would recomend them to any casual user wanting a little extra range.

1 out of 5 stars do not purchase this radio.......2004-12-27

my dad bought 2 sets of these and i bought one. two of his broke when he tried putting the rechargable battery in. and one of mine broke. the ones we got the battery into without ruining the radio we were not impressed with .. very poor sound quality. I hope motorola recalls this radio. I would encourage anyone to avoid this radio.

1 out of 5 stars Many bells and whistles, but falls far short of expectations.......2004-09-15

I bought this 2-way radio to use around the rural community I live in, especially for communicating in emergency wildfire situations. It is an area with rolling hills, many pine, oak trees and brush.

The Good: Easy to use, clear instruction manual, more than enough channels, clear sound.

The Bad: It didn't work over a mile as soon as line of sight was lost. If there is a hill between the two radios, I could only hear a click that the other radio was trying to transmit, but no communication.

The Ugly: The radio is very cheaply put together. The rechargeable battery pack is almost impossible to insert into the battery compartment. While trying to insert it, I broke one of the battery poles in the battery compartment. I was able to repair it with some solder and glue, but I wouldn't try to remove and re-insert it. If you use AA batteries only, it shouldn't be a problem. They are easy to insert. I also tried to remove the belt clip from the radio in order to have clear access to the battery compartment. There is a little tab on the belt clip that keeps the clip on the radio, you need to pull that tab to release it off the radio. Well, the first time I pulled the tab, it broke off. After that, the clip wouldn't stay on the radio. All this experience even before I started using the radio made me conclude that this is not a well-constructed radio, and does not deserve the Motorola brand. I am returning it and I will look at the commercial grade ones instead (such as the CP200).

5 out of 5 stars solid and neat.......2007-01-10

it's a solid product, hard to break, yet fashion and look cool, i like that

2 out of 5 stars Like all the other portable radios - cheap.......2006-09-28

We use these radios for backing our RV into our driveway, so they are not used very frequently - maybe four to six times a year for 5 minutes each time. We had previously bought several sets of two way radios made by different manufacturers over the years which never held up. Seems always one of the two would crap out. So I decided instead of buying the
el-cheepo's, I would spend a little more and get something that I thought might hold up. Wrong. These Motorola's didn't hold up any better than the cheaper ones. Seems to me that two way radios that are used as infrequently as ours are, should last more than a year.

5 out of 5 stars good product... and a comment on "knock off".......2005-06-04

I took a pair of T5950 on a 2 week trip. Using 2300mah nimh batteries, they last more than a day. The sound quality was very good. Remember, don't crank the speaker volume to max, this actually distorts the sound. When in the city, I was able to use the T5950s about 10 street blocks apart. The sounds was very clear.

By the way, I saw a comment on Motorola "imposter" and "licensed knockoff" by HippoRadio here. HippoRadio clams T5950 is a true Moto product, while other models like T6500 are "a licensed knockoff of the T5950 by Motorola's mainland-Chinese electronics manufacturer". He came to this conclusion because "a small indication on the rear of the T6500 package discloses that the product is Manufactured and sold by Giant International, Ltd., official licensee for this product."

Since I was looking to buy more Moto's radios, just to verify, I emailed Motorola asking which models are made by Moto themselves.

Here is the official reply from Motorola's customer service Marisol R on Jun 03, 2005. It seems, in fact, ALL talkabout radios are made by Giant International based in China. Any quality difference between models are just due to different designs, quality control, etc., and not due to different manufacturers.

I needed my Motorola radios today but they were defective and I am still waiting for Motorola to get moving and send me a replacement set. Buy Cobra or Midland.

3 out of 5 stars Licenses have zero to do with range.......2005-01-26

The idiot who posted that a license is required to get the range is just plain wrong. The FCC can no more regulate the range of the radio than it can the weather. The license is required to operate the radio - it is **PERMISSION** from the government to share in the frequency range this unit covers. Pfft. Some folks...

5 out of 5 stars Iomega Rev 35GB USB 2.0 External Drive .......2007-08-02

Could you send the product Iomega Rev 35GB USB 2.0 External Drive to Brazil ?

5 out of 5 stars Great alternative to tapes.......2007-05-15

This is based on bernoulli(removable hard drive) technology that is random access and is 8 time faster than a type drive in most cases. The cartridges are the same size as a stack of four 720k/1.44mb floppy disks. Works with most tape back up software. There are various models of this drive which include internal vs external and interface type such as USB, SCSI, Firewire, IDE.

4 out of 5 stars Lived a good long time, then died without warning........2007-02-21

We've been using our REV for several years as an accounting system backup device. Simple. Scriptable. Dependable. The only problem was that it rolled over on its back one evening and died. I suppose you can't expect these things to last forever, and ours went a good 3+ years without incident. Now that the price is down in the $260 range, it's a nice little device for nightly backups.

2 out of 5 stars Unreliable power supply.......2006-09-01

This product worked fine for me for about a year until the power supply failed. This was very inconvenient, and caused my client to have a gap in their data backup. Iomega were good enough to send me a replacement.

After about another year the replacement power supply failed. Another gap in my clients data backup, not to mention a small dent in their confidence in me. This time Iomega were unwilling to replace, and so I had to buy another replacement power supply.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2006-07-27

I have always used and liked the Iomega products starting with their Zip drives. The ease of use, flexibility and storage capacity have always made these products well worth the price.

I use this product to back up my computer. I prefer to use the Rev Disks, which can be stored in a safe location in case of disaster. Using secondary hard drives, either external or internal, can be risky. These drives sometimes suffer mechanical breakdowns and are susceptible to the same risks as the computer, i.e. fire, water, viruses, other damage.

As far as storage capacity, the Rev disks have the most storage capacity that I have seen. There are probably others out there with more, but I always try to go with known and reputable name brands. Having the high storage capacity make backups easier which, in turn, lets me do it more frequently. Using one Rev disk verses numerous CDs or DVDs, is just plain easier. If you have a hard drive larger than 35GB, then CDs and or DVDs are just too much hassle, which makes backups a nightmare. With the Rev product, it makes it soooo much easier. I highly recommend this product.
