Short Term Investment.......2007-09-20
I first one I got lasted 6 months. The customer service was good and they sent me out a brand new one. This last one lasted almost a year. But now that it broke after the 1 year warranty of the original purchase, I'm SOL. If you want a disc printer that will last more than a year, look elsewhere.
Ribbons are a little inconsistent.......2007-07-06
I've printed hundreds of discs with this printer and, when it works correctly, the finished product is great. However, it doesn't always work correctly and, on occasion, the output is a mess.
What I have discovered is that the printer isn't really at fault when I get a bad print job. It's always been the ribbon. The take-up reel is very unforgiving and, if you get twists in the used-up ribbon, the print job won't be very good. With the exception of one ribbon that I could never get to feed correctly, I've always been able to solve the problem by pulling the used ribbon out and rewinding it on to the take-up reel with a pencil. I shouldn't have to do that, but it isn't like these things cost a fortune, either. You get what you pay for, and I'm fairly satisfied with this printer.
Does Not Last.......2007-03-16
Originally, this seemed like a good low cost solution to CD/DVD labeling. In theory it is wonderful; however, when put into practice there are just too many faults. I have used the product (or should I say three of them, and waiting for number four) for about six months with little success. They all seem to end up malfunctioning one way or another. The good news is that their customer support seems to be aware of this as they readily replace my unit. I think there is a year warranty, so I imagine this will last only so long. The expense of shipping it back and the time down is not worth the hastle though. Buyer be warned-search elsewhere!
Primera Z1 CD/DVD Label Printer.......2007-01-11
I can remember when we wrote on backups with a magic marker or used a sticky label and neither were good for the disk..and then the industry developed the Label printer at a price the home user could afford..They print with a thermal heat over a dry ribbon..You can get ribbons in a variety of colors, I just use black but to each his own..--Phyllis
The Z1 is a great, low volume CD/DVD printer.......2007-01-10
We use the Z1 to print professional looking labels on our CD/DVD projects. This is more of a 1 off printer. Each disc must be loaded and unloaded manually, and if you're looking to do volume labeling, this isn't the printer for you. If you only need to do the occasional label that looks professionally done, this is the perfect machine. One caveat - This printer prints monochrome labels. There are 4 colors available, but the color of the cartridge determines the the color of the entire label.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to replace - I'll stick with black!.......2006-02-20
This was my first replacement ribbon for the Primera Signature-Z thermal disk printer. While a bit taken aback at the cost of these things - I found the removal of the original ribbon cartridge and the replacement with the new one to be rather straight-foreward and easy.
While available in several other colors, the printer, itself, only can use one at a time - so, to print multi-colors on disks, one would have to remove and replace cartridges mid-process. A nuisance at least - a reminder of the relative (over?) simplicity of the printer design itself. In any event, the black looks fine on all my projects - although, as I pointed out in my review of the printer itself, the print does not adhere flawlessly to any area on the disk that is embossed. On my existing supply of name-brand embossed disks, I have had to experiment with exact placement of the print to avoid the embossed areas. Since using this printer more regularly, however, I have taken to buying plain, non-embossed white thermal printable CDr_Rs and DVD-Rs.
The print result on these,I am pleased to say, is PERFECT!

..........2002-09-22
I got this camera new for $35.00, and still feel ripped off. The "high resolution" images (352x288) look like a screen capture from a web cam, and the low resolution images (176x144) don't even look like images. It will only take pictures in extremely good light, literally. If you try to take a picture without enough light, it beeps telling you that it can't do it. I turned on all the lights in the room, in the middle of the day, and that still wasn't good enough for it. I had to open all the blinds and point it toward the window before it would even take a picture. Oh yeah, and all the pictures in the camera are erased if you turn the thing off. I just wanted a simple camera to take pics for the web, but its high-resolution images aren't even good enough for that task. Stay away from this stinker.

Great!.......2005-01-07
Like the Other People i wanted a small cd player for My Bed Room I got this From My Parents For Christmas. My dad set it up for me and then i fooled around with it, it sounded great! my sister has a $200 Stereo and the Jvc FS-H35 Executive Microsystem played louder and better than hers. I Love my new Stereo And play it every Chance i get to!
I would recommend this!.......2004-05-14
This is a nice, inexpensive, "cute" (yet elegant) system that fits anywhere.
I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for something practical that sounds great, and who doesn't want to waste their money!
The sound quality, by the way, is quite powerful. I was surprised that this sounds much better than many large stereos I've heard.
TAKE A HIKE BOSE.......2004-02-23
This unit is excellent. I got past flashing lights and meters years ago. I wanted something the looked clean and sounded great and the JVC FS-H35 fits the bill. The sound is superb, even with tapes made from original 40 year old Herb Alpert albums!!! The functions are easy to work and it even has bass and treble controls, unlike the BOSE Wave/CD I listened to in one of the Bose outlet stores. I think the JVC sounds just as good and maybe even a bit better. Plus, JVC was not arrogant enough to think they know exactly how I need to hear my music. I listened to many brand name mini/micro sytems up to $200 in my search for a replacement system after my old one went ka-put. This JVC by far was the best sounding system in the $100-$200 price range including Panasonic, Sony and RCA. If you want a small system for the bedroom or den, you can't go wrong with this one. One note: If buying for the bedroom, a small piece of black electrical tape is good to cover the red standby light. It is a bit bright
Everything I wanted and more!.......2004-01-10
Ok, bear with me, there is a story to this, fortunately with a happy ending. I will try to keep it short.
I wanted a small stereo for the bedroom, nothing fancy (I have my fancy stuff in the a/v room). Just wanted a good system that was compact and inexpensive.
First I bought an Emerson cd player ES8 since it was on sale for $59.00 and looked cute and sounded fine in the store.... brought it home and within a week the cd player was skipping, the radio was flipping out and the music, when it did play, was overshadowed with squeeks and whirring sounds from the machine.. I think it was possessed.. hehe.. Anyway, needless to say I returned the piece of rubbish and replaced it with a JVC for a few bucks more (should have done that in the first place.. still kicking myself!)
Aaaaah! Now this JVC FS-H35 is exactly what I was wanting. A reliable system with great sound, nice minimalist/industrial look, simple yet ingenious in design and electronics, with nice features like autoreverse and one-touch recording on the tape deck. And random play and programmable play on the cd player. Extra features like timer/sleep fxn's. The remote is great and has all the fxn's available on it, for real ease of use. Most importantly, the speakers, though small, put out a great sound, with none of the nasty tinny sound that you get on most cheaper stereos. The bass boost is adequate (more than adequate I should say, for this size of system) and provides an enjoyable listening experience, which is all I wanted in the first place. I mean, is that too much too ask for? I never owned a JVC before, but I am definitely a believer after this experience!
Great sound And Product.......2003-10-28
This is a great Compact sterio. It has the best sound EVER!!! It is very simple to use even though it has so many features. I recomend this one to any one who wants a sterio worth every cent

Boy Scout Approved - unofficially of course.......2005-04-26
We had some off brand radios that we used when we convoyed to our weekend campouts. If we couldn't see the person in the car near us, they were just about useless. We found these GXT400's on sale locally and we tried a pair and were so impressed that our troop purchased a total of 10. We hand these out to all the drivers going on the campout and the clarity of transmissions and the range we are now able to achieve is astonishing. Is it the 12 miles advertised, no way, but, now the radios are actually useful. Our convoy can stretch out over a mile plus and all communications are heard and understood by all drivers. The clarity is amazing and especially welcome after using that other brand.
Once we get to camp, we sometimes split up into patrol activities and we hand a radio to the adult that is accompanying the patrol. We have hiked and been separated by up to 5 miles according to our GPS's and we were still able to communicate and coordinate troop activities. Keep in mind, this 5 miles was out in the boonies and there were no electronic or structural interference in the area. I don't think they will go much further than this unless you are in laboratory conditions of perfection.
Another feature that sold us on these radios was the NOAA Weather reception capability. When we are out and unable to keep up with television during changing weather, we can reliably count on the weather channels to keep us informed of pending storms that might need us to take action to protect the boys.
I think the best testimony is that when I purchased radios for my family activities, I bought exactly this radio due to the extensive experience we had during our Boy Scout outings.
One of the better values going right now........2005-02-02
I've owned and used a pair of the Midland GXT400 radios for about 6 months. I'm basically a gadget guy, but this has been my first experience with FRS/GMRS radios.
As an inexperienced buyer, I found shopping for two-way radios to be very confusing. There are *so* many options in terms of number of channels, number of privacy codes, different power levels of transmitters, etc. It can be quite overwhelming. It is difficult to determine what features will be useful to you and what features are not worthwhile. There aren't many web resources available. Heck, even Amazon lists about 100 different models of two-way radios. Pretty much all of the models have good and bad owner reviews.
How is the average consumer, who isn't a radio-head or wireless communication expert, supposed to ever make a decision? Ugh.
I shopped obsessively until I finally settled on the Midland units. The main decision factors for me were:
(1) This is the only model that claimed a 4 watt transmitter at the time. (Not sure that is still the case)
(2) It uses readily available AA batteries and not some crazy rechargeable battery pack, which would require me to pack yet another charger when I travel.
(3) The price was reasonable.
First, I have to say that I'm really impressed with the radio technology overall. FRS/GMRS radios really do work. These are truly a quantum leap from the old walkie-talkies you had as a kid.
Range -- As others have mentioned, forget the silly range numbers that are advertised on the package. You will be disappointed if you really expect to get more than a mile or two in real world conditions. The range all depends on the environment. In a city setting, you are lucky to get a mile. Out in the country you can get more.
Battery life -- I'm happy with the battery life on the Midland units. I use NiMH AA rechargeable batteries and I've used them all day, two days in a row and never seen the low battery sign. Granted, I didn't spend a LOT of time talking on them, but they were still on the whole time.
For doing car-to-car communication as you convoy down the road, they are absolutely fantastic. Don't expect to get much more than line of sight range, but the sound quality is excellent and it makes traveling in multiple cars much easier. You can plan stops, check maps, etc. without having to pull over or use expensive cell phone time. This is especially true when you are navigating in an unfamiliar city.
I've also used my radios on the ski slopes. In that environment, the range is much better. I've had good luck contacting friends who were spread out all over the mountain. I have not had any problems communicating with other brands of radios. I've actually been surprised at how far I'm able to reach other people under good conditions.
Having sung the praises of FRS/GMRS radios in general and of the Midland units in particular, I do have a couple of minor issues:
- One minor complaint is that the PTT (push to talk) button on one unit is a little bit tricky. You've got to give it a good firm push to transmit. The other unit is much softer touch.
- The menu system to do the settings is not completely self-explanatory. If you swap the batteries, the unit has to be completely reset, which takes a minute. I don't use the radios every day, so I forget exactly what each menu setting does if I haven't used them in awhile. I wish I could set it and then have the radio retain the settings until I changed them.
- The radios themselves are not the smallest available. They measure about 2.5" x 1.25" x 6". This makes them a bit too large for pocket size, but not overly large.
Despite these minor things, I still highly recommend the Midland GXT400 units. I'm happy with my purchase.
BTW... if you are an obsessive shopper, just stop now and place the order. I don't think you will be disappointed.
Well built. No 12 Mile Range (my experience), but still good.......2005-01-20
I bought these not expecting the 12 mile advertised range. I have played the FRS/GMRS radio thing before. I know that none of them live up to what they advertise on the package! Unless your buddy is on a mountain & you are on another mountain facing him... and underneath you is nothing except a desolate desert. They are 4 watt radios. They sound great and are easy to charge and use. My package came with the optional headsets. Great for car to car transmissions. I live in Tampa Bay, FL. They reliably cover 1 mile easy, two miles is a stretch... but it can be done. 12 miles, yeah right. ... I have some swamp land you might be interested in. IN SUMMARY, the best GMRS/FRS radios I have ever owned, they are well built and reasonably priced. They work incredibly well... but THE POPE himself does not have a prayer of getting 12 miles out of these. 1 - 2 miles, yes. Maybe even a little more in really open terrain with no obstructions. THUMBS UP!
stay away from these.......2004-12-24
purchased radios and charger. charged batteries as directed for 24hr first charge. light on charger never turned green and radios read half power on battery meter. replaced with regular AA batteries still meter read half power so radios do not work properly! one of the radios lcd missing several digits making it impossible to see functions properly.conclusion there is little or no quality control, radios appear to be built very cheaply, not good as a toy or proffessionaly.
KYLE THOMPSON
Excellent Value.......2004-12-18
I received my first walkie talkies as a young kid during the 60's. Back then, the transmit range was about 50'. IE, it was just as convenient to shout to the other person as it was to use the walkie talkies. But I was really fascinated with them. Then the 70's came along and I was swept up in the CB craze and learned a lot about the importance of the radio and the antenna itself. Anyway, I am now blown away by the performance of these little radios.
I had fun reading reviews and specs and studying up on them. But when it came to choosing a model, I had a hard time. I have never seen such a disparity in user reviews as with these guys. Some people love a model, others hate it. But the reason is obvious to me. It is always about failed expectations. I blame the manufacturer's marketing department for this. All of them.
The theme of the dissapointed walkie talkie enthusiast here was almost always the same - range. Well, let's face it, when the manufacturer says 10 mile range, the savvy consumer figures "baloney, but hey, I'd be happy with the 5 mile range it should provide". Forget it. Plan on two miles tops, maybe more if you are on one mountain top and your friend is on another. Car-to-car ? A mile or so. A car is a very noisy electrical environment. So too are all the other cars around you. Not to mention you are encased in metal. These factors all severly hamper range.
A couple of other things. Range is a function of the fourth root of output power. What the heck does that mean ? It means if your radio has an output power of 2 watts and you want to double the transmission range, you'd need 16 watts of output power. So, the transmission range difference between a radio that puts out 3 watts and one like this one that puts out 4 watts is not 25% greater. It is much less than that. But like chicken soup, what could it hurt ? That's why I got them.
In summary, for $ 50, these radios are a superb deal. They are built well and work great. I saved twenty bucks by getting the version without the headsets. Who needs 'em ? The weather channel is a real bonus. By the way, don't forego this radio for model that has "weather alert". That feature drains the battery. Even with the radio "off", it is still essentially "on" listening for a weather alert.
