Brother MFC-8440.......2007-02-23
For it's price, just over 240 bucks. I am VERY pleased with this multi-function printer. The first one fell off the desk when the desk collasped. After this the right side of the control panel stopped working but I could still use the printer from the PC controlled "Control Center". I ordered another reconditioned unit which again is just perfect.
Great product owned two of them.........2007-01-25
I purchased a brand new MFC-8440 1 yr ago and continue with excellent usage. As my business grow, I needed another one so I thought let try the Remanufactured one and see if it is worth the price compare to a new one. So far i had it for 2 months with no problem. Work just like new!
Overall, it great. the only thing I wish it had network capability. Hey, can't have it all
Best Multifunctional ever.......2007-01-05
Excellent machine, great performance
Saved lot of time and desk space. Great Scanning speed and quality
Best 5 in 1 I've every owned.......2006-03-20
Easy to use, Easy Setup, Fast printing, Faxing, Photocopying - I love it! Best electronic purchase I've boughten in a long time!
Great printer/copier/fax--weak color scanner.......2006-02-28
I got a great deal on this refurbished multifunction laser printer and am mostly very happy with it after a few weeks light use. It has the features I wanted (except duplexing which was another price jump up), but I honestly can't say I've put it to a real test yet.
One of the critical performance issues for me is quietness in standby mode and brief lag time in powering up to print. I'm very satisfied on both counts. Scan quality is my only real complaint.
Print quality and speed are good and Brother's Postscript emulation seems to do an excellent job of printing from Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. Copying and faxing functions perform as expected, although the document feeder has tried to eat a few slightly curled/crumpled originals.
My only disappointment is in color scanning capability/quality. In my brief and admittedly less-than-thorough testing, color scans are practically unusable-too high in contrast with blown out highlights and no detail in the shadows. My test scan was extremely noisy, mottled gradations, and excessively saturated colors. I don't know whether the scanner has inherently poor quality or is just hobbled by very limited software that offers far too few controls. I'm going to look for third-party software before completely writing off the scanner.
Despite the scanning flaws, the price was right and I'm still happy I bought the printer.

Customer Reviews:
It made it 1.5 years... So long..........2007-03-17
Well,we had liked this product for the 1.5 years that it worked.... We are sending it back under the replacement warranty that we purchased. It now sounds like an old vehicle clunking down the road. It was used relatively lightly for printing and fax in our small office.
Great multi-function machine.......2007-01-28
We liked this one so well we purchased another one for our home office.
Great Replacement for B&W Laser Printer and Scanner.......2006-11-03
It is a great replacement for black and white laser printer and flat bed scanner to save space for office or home office use. I was looking for similar product that does scanning legal size paper, and Brother MFC-8440 does it all. It scans in color or b&w any paper size upto legal size either on flat bed or paper feeder. Perfect for small office or home office.
Great functionality & reliability.......2006-09-06
Excellent product, well worth the money! The Cons I've listed are in fact just minor irritations to me, but are certainly worth consideration to anyone purchasing this product.
Pros:
* Faxing quality is fast and clear.
* Scanner quality is very good. Document scanning is fast with great clarity.
* Copy quality is impressive. Documents are almost as good as the original, and with the document feeder you can just walk away and come back when the job is complete.
Cons:
* I've hooked up my answering machine through the MFC. Due to it's answering every call to check for a fax, it defeats the caller-ID function of the telephone to which it has been connected.
* Power sucker! This thing uses alot of power to do it's job. So whenever I send a print-job to the MFC, the lights dim momentarily. Also, it draws too much power to be connected through my 1500-Watt UPS.
* Printed/copied documents come out in the recessed bay, which can be irritating trying to fish out smaller paper sizes.
This is not a color printer yet they don't say it in their marketing and advertise it as a full-function all-in-one.......2006-08-24
This machine works great except the fact it's not a color printer. I read the whole product description on 5 sites and at least a dozen reviews while comparison shopping for the best price and it was not indicated on any that it is a black and white. The ad says it is full-function printer and I think the color function is an important one. So I'm going to lose a chunk of money (on selling it and the shipping cost) and a bunch of time.
I'm more thorough than almost anyone I know. They need to put that in the central description.
Besides the fact it's not color, the machine is easy to operate, easy to set-up, a nice compact size, easy to see and press buttons, easy menus, and a nice look etc.

Crippled Functionality for Big Brother Bucks! $$$.......2007-08-20
I'm not new to the Brother MFC line, having owned the 8440D for almost 2 years before purchasing the 8660DN at Costco just a few days ago. I'm a business users, and the 8440D was a great device (except for the power consumption). I purchased the 8660DN to replace the 8440D because it has the built-in network card. I want to connect this device straight to the LAN without having to use a PC as a print server.
The reason I give this unit 1 star is for it's total lack of duplex *copying* capability, which can only be explained as pure profit motive. Even my old 8440D allowed you to make a two-sided copy of a two-sided original, albeit through a convoluted series of menu selections.
This printer/MFC is DUMBED DOWN. Yup, that's right. The kissin' cousin of this printer is 8860DN. They are so close in every way that Brother even includes the two models in the same user guide. The 8860DN has a Duplex key that allows you to make duplex copies with ease. This model does not. Why not? Because brother wants you to pay more money for that feature is about all I can figure.
The reason I say this is that there are six keys used to control the copy features of the MFC. Both this model and the 8860DN have six keys. However, this "cripple ware" model uses what would be the Duplex key as the "Contarst" function. The 8860DN uses key two as both Contrast and Quality as shown:
8660DN keys
[Contrast] [Quality] ...
8860DN keys
[Duplex ] [Contrast/Quality]...
What's really irritating is that the contrast/quality key does nothing except put you into the copy menu anyway. In other words, you can set quality and contrast in the copy settings when you press the Copy key. Why do you need an additional button to set what you can already set as soon as you press the Copy key? So I have a device with two useless keys and no Duplex key that is a critical function of a duplex MFC.
Go figure.
Brother, you've not only lost a customer over this idiocy, but we *were*, as in past-tense, a VAR for Brother. We don't take well to this kind of marketing ploy. If you have duplex functionality, then make it available to through the copy feature.
Great multifunction printer for the $$$.......2007-05-21
I'm surprised that one reviewer rated this machine so negatively. This is my fourth Brother MFC printer. My previous one mysteriously stopped working, but Costco gave me a full refund (after using it for two years), so I bought this one. It's a very good printer/scanner/fax machine and does everything I ask it to very reliably. Almost all of my previous printers were HPs, and I had pretty good luck with them but decided to give Brother a try a few years ago. They are every bit as good as HPs and usually less expensive to operate. Overall, I don't think they are less expensive to operate than Canons, but they've been such good work-horses for me in my business that I just keep going back to them. I'm not very 'brand-committed' since I see printers as basically commodity items with a fairly short shelf life. I expect to get about two years of service from a printer, but I have one Brother machine that is going into its fourth year.
I really like the built-in duplex feature of this machine since I have to create many of my forms for my business, and this machine handles that feature with aplomb. I would also rate Brother tech support higher than HP -- I got through to them quickly, and they readily answered my questions. I'd say this machine is noiser than the other Brother (or HP) machines I've had, but it's not a big deal. No one in my office has ever complained.
I would not hesitate to purchase another Brother, and I would say they are as good as the HPs I've had (but less expensive).
Don't listen to the other 1-star review.......2007-04-13
Prior to this I had an HP 3330, and it was good to me for over 7 years, but I decided to upgrade to a duplexing unit. I bought a Canon laser printer, and sent it back two days later to Office Depot--whoever designed that unit should be shot. Anyway...
My wife was in Costco a couple of days later, and told me they had the Brother MFC 8660DN there, and since it's easy to return stuff to Costco, I told her to bring it on home.
This unit is a dream. The footprint is small. The door for inserting envelopes and single sheets of paper (so you can easily use recycled paper) is right there in front where you need it and is simple (unlike the Canon); I use a lot of recycled paper.
The copier works FAST, and the settings are easy to use and very intuitive. The fax unit works better and faster and easier than the HP ever did--finally, it coordinates with my answering machine without any hassles.
The scanner and my computer (Windows XP) work together seamlessly.
The printer (although not the copier or fax) has great duplexing capabilities. (A more expensive unit, I believe, has duplexing for the copier and fax too if you need it).
Let's talk about Brother support--I stupidly sent an envelope with a metal clasp through the unit, and realized that that's why a couple of little dots were appearing on my pages. I called Brother, and they sent me a new drum AND a new toner cartridge (okay, I had to call two times)at n/c.
btw, you'll read some reviews online that say it's noisy. It's not noisy. There is more noise coming from the plane that's flying overhead right now, or the dogs barking next door, than from this printer, and it's right behind my desk chair, where I can easily access it. I use it all the time.
So, I'm really happy with this Brother product, and recommend it.
Brother - NEVER.......2007-03-10
I was with HP for 15-20 years, needed MFP read all reviews here and decided that MFC-8860DN will be a good choice (other option was HP 3055). It has everything I need - copier, network print, scan, fax. Easy setup (I am in IT for 25+ years). Everything was almost perfect. The only complaint you need to keep in mind - IT EATS 1100 WATTS when starts printing - light could flash.
It was OK, until I reached 1500 pages mark - it start printing small dots every ~3". No problem - need to clean everything (per my experience and confirmed on Brother's web site). Cleaned - it was the biggest mistake - all outputs were with tons of small dots all around the page.
Called Support 2 times. After few hours of troubleshooting - they advised me to replace DRUM. Hey - its only 1500 pages, nowhere close to promised 25000! After I mentioned it, they offered me 75% discount on it. What's about warranty? Sorry. I spoke to supervisor, he explained that Support in Philippines can't do it, the only option - to call USA office.
I replaced DRUM. Now counter shows around 2000 pages and I have same problem again.
Hey, I heard this before - never say never. Still as of today:
I would NEVER, NEVER buy Brother printer/MFC again!!!

Get another brand.......2007-02-26
It is difficult to know where to begin. This machine wants to be a FAX, so you have to wait after turning it on to be able to copy or scan, else it will try to FAX what you put in. The scanner is slow and of poor quality even at high resolution. It started complaining that it needs a new toner cartridge 6 months ago; I'm still using that cartridge. When it needs paper it tells you to add paper, then gives a long annoying beep when you open the paper tray and tells you the paper tray is open. When there is a jam, it tells you to open the door to clear the jam, then gives a long annoying beep when you open the door. You have to periodically re-install the software to keep it running. The website is close to useless. You have to re-enter things like the current time every time you power cycle it (I hoped it would get the time from my computer, but no such luck). There is more, but 'nuff said.

Customer Reviews:
Rear adaptor funky, but it works.......2002-09-02
I got the FireWire version of the Zip drive.
My previous purchase of the USB version has been flawless.
The FireWire version is a little funky because the firewire interface doesn't look "normal/integrated", there is this funky adaptor that attaches to the rear and appears to convert the firewire to something else (looks like SCSI).
The manner in which this adaptor attaches to the rear is a little precarious (looks like it won't stay hooked reliably).
But I in fact had no problem getting the software to work, and the drive has not given me any problems at all.
not what I expect from a firewire/usb product.......2001-10-05
After first getting a USB portable zip and found it to be extremely slow, I returned it and bought a firewire Iomega zip. As I need it to be portable, I don't want it to require a power adapter. I was dismayed when I found out that the USB version requires a power adapter. While the firewire one does not, it is not that much significantly faster than the USB version. It is also bulkier than the USB version because of the adapter. It takes 7 minutes to transfer a 56 Mb file--not what I expect from a firewire connecting device.
Superb!.......2001-07-28
I needed an external drive in a hurry, and initially turned to external CD burners. However, after reading numerous reviews across a variety of sites, it quickly became obvious that none of the external burners were up to the task. According to reviews, most of them (HP 8000 series, Iomega Predator, etc...) suffered from reliability problems, and to exacerbate the matter further, transfer speeds were reportedly slow. Hence, in desperation, I turned to other forms of storage. To my delight, Iomega's Zip 250 USB/Firewire drive has performed excellently! I haven't had a chance to test out the firewire capability, but all I can say is that I am extremely pleased with its USB performance! I have successfully transferred all my files from my work computer (running on Windows NT) to my home computer (running on Windows 98), and there have been no software or reliability issues at all. Good going, Iomega! Now, if only they could pull their stock out of the pits........
