Music may sound better bigger, but bigger won't always gel with your chosen listening space. The KLH Reference Series Model 18 Loudspeakers walk a nice middle ground between compact size and life-like sound, playing clearly and loudly on minimal amplifier power.

The two-way Model 18s use 8-inch woofers, moving more air than many bass-heavy three-way speakers. In a two-way design such as this, an 8-inch woofer can be tough to integrate with the tweeter. The Model 18s aren't completely successful in their integration of the two--the tweeter sounded somewhat pronounced in our listening; however, the speakers don't strive for excessive bass output either. If anything, we found the Model 18s a little on the thin side (despite a low-end rating down to 48 Hz), sounding better on sparsely arranged acoustic music than on material with complex arrangements or textures.

The slight high-frequency lift in the Model 18s sets them up for good imaging (visualization of the music) and good low-level music listening, in which the bass frequencies more or less drop out, leaving the floor to the higher-pitched melodic instruments.

The Model 18s exhibited good off-axis response (as when heard from the back or the side), a desirable trait if you'll be listening from places other than the central "sweet spot" between the pair. Magnetic shielding will keep the magnets in the voice coils from interfering with a television or computer-monitor picture, as might occur in home-theater or multimedia setups.

Too big for most bookshelves and too small to be considered floorstanders, these speakers will probably be best served by using low (10- to 20-inch) speaker stands. In mid-sized rooms with music leaning toward mellow, you'll be well-served by the KLH Model 18s.

These are the best speakers i have ever had. I love them. Anyone who wants to upgrade their front speakers, but these. They have a lot of bass and the best treble ever. I wanted to replace a pair of bulky ADS monitors from the mid-70s when I moved into a smaller space. I listened to a pair at Circuit City and was blown away. The definition and soundstage were detailed and wide.

Searching on the net for a discounter, I found these at Amazon.com. I could not believe the price! I also bought a set of 12 inch steel stands from Audio Advisor to get them off the floor.

The sound, construction, and look are awesome--especially on the black steel stands. In every way this is the best audio value I ever experienced. Is KLH back to stay!--I hope so. I'm going to get a pair of Ref 16 for the bedroom.

I blew out the old factory speakers that came with my bookshelf system, I was looking for some replacement speakers when i got a gift certificate for amazon.com for a graduation present. I was looking at the selection and became suspicious of these speakers, being marked so low. but since i did have the gift cert. i decided to give them a shot, expecting something to be wrong. but when i got them. they were everything they were described to be. i dont know how they can sell them for this price but they are definatly worth the money.

With a Name like Mead, one would think they would not corrupt their product with such useless optics. It is not as good as my Astrolon: (see Review here at Amazon in Toys) and that,s saying some; has a giant diffraction ring in the objective glass. (Bad) and the Equatorial Mount sags unbeleivably when trying to focus an object in the eyepeice. In short, a horrid experience. I,m sending mine back to Heartland America before the 30 days are up. Better for someone to spend a little more money and get a better scope; something like the Celestron 80MM Powerseeker (...)

with this cheap and cheerful 'scope from Meade. I liked their 90-AZ-F model far more, but it's [$$$] more expensive and you have to purpose build a stable viewing platform out of red brick in order to use it, so as a compromise, the 60-AZ-D is a much better choice. For children wishing to spy on school friends two blocks down you can't go wrong with this. Does exactly what it says on the box - "Warning - this product may contain nuts."

eyepieces serverly limit view-here are tips for you..........2002-06-02

not a bad little telescope but the eye pieces are of the poorest
quality .not what i expected from a company with such a good name.
if you use the scope with out the 3x barlow (total junk) and with out angle mirror (also very poor resoslution )and use the eye piece dirrectly its just ok . then add a stone or other near by heavy object on tripod stay and the shaking will stop..
adjust the thumb screws so you get just enough resistance to move scope -good luck -and buy better eye pieces if you plan to keep it ..

Be aware of the limitations before you buy.......2000-06-16

The notion of a $99 telescope is very attractive, but don't think a scope of this size and quality will deliver those stunning NASA-like images of Saturn and Jupiter you're used to seeing on TV.

This is a modest little scope, capable of modest magnification. The 60mm (2-1/2 inch) objective lens means that the absolute maximum maginification this scope is capable of is about 100x. The spindly tripod, however, makes viewing at anything over 40x or so near impossible.

Through this scope (and similar ones) Saturn and Jupiter will appear like little dots- about the size of a dime 10 or 15 feet away. You'll just be able to make out that Saturn has rings. Views of the Moon will be much better- you'll be able to see details in craters that can keep you busy for a long time- and some star culsters and deep-sky objets will be interesting viewing if you have a dark sky to use this scope under.

But that tripod is still a problem. If you do buy this scope, use it sitting down, with the tripod at its shortest length, and some weights attached to stabilize it, and you'll be rewarded with a more usable scope. Still, you'll be better off saving another $100 and getting a slightly larger scope with a sturdier mounting.

Having worked on and off in the sound reinforcement industry for over 20 years I love the punchy brightness that horn loaded speaker systems can provide. This led me to evaluate the HLS series when I was forced to leave my existing system behind on moving to the USA.

The HLS615 in an exceptionally good sounding speaker. Not only does the horn system add that directional punch, but the midrange is rich and warm as well. These speakers are ported on the back and deserve to be placed at least 3 feet in front of a wall to maximise bass response.

Overall a great speaker for the price, either for audio or home theatre applications.
