Lousy Machine.......2006-11-28
I had the same problems as the first reviewer with my Jvc Hi-fi Vcr/DVD Combo. The DVDs started freezing up on the machine after just a few months use. I gave up and decided to buy a separate DVD player. I am still using the VCR to play videos but the recording and receiving quality is so bad it is just good for playback. Anything you attempt to record with the VCR is just second rate quality and using the time recording function is just to frustrating. Why bother --- the video quality is just not worth the hassel. I am current looking to replace the system with something better.
Buyer beware!.......2005-11-18
I bought THREE of these things over the last two years ... at least two of them from Amazon. (The actual model number was different -- XVC20U in black -- but it's basically the same combo deck they've been selling for several years now.)
They worked fine at first, but after a while, DVDs started freezing up on them. Oddly, I have absolutely NO trouble playing music CDs in the very same drives.
DVD freezing has has happened on all of them, but it is worse on the unit I have used most. It seems to do it less when the machine or the DVD has cooled down. It gets worse over time. Lens cleaning with a disc-brusher, lens cleaning via taking off the case for direct contact cleaning, and air-pressured dusting -- all do no good.
Anyway, thanks to JVC I have several hundred dollars worth of DVD players that don't play DVDs ... other reviews (under various model numbers) suggest there's not a chance JVC will make good on them.
I have had, in the past, good luck with JVC TVs and car stereo units, and I try to stay loyal to brands, suppliers and what not. But I seriously doubt I will be making any other JVC purchases due to these things. I suppose JVC doesn't place much value on their brand or image or they wouldn't have dumped this stuff into the marketplace.
It seems to be getting harder and harder to find companies that bother to make products that are actually worth what you pay for them. I suppose companies that rip-off customers and laugh their way to the bank must be part of the "new economy" I keep hearing about.

Factory Defect....Look Elsewhere.......2007-09-16
my JVC HRXVC15S arrived with a factory defect--a LOUD 60cycle hum via the VHS side. i called VANNS, the seller, and they said call JVC (never going to buy anything from VANNS again...), called JVC and described the problem, they asked a couple of questions that makes me believe that the problem is a known defect, tell me to ship it to them and, no, they don't pay the shpping. so.......never by another JVC product again....
so, i'll try and sell the thing as a DVD player (no hum from that side) for $25 and shop for another (non-JVC) unit.
Don't get this if you need an S-Video output........2007-08-26
I got this to transfer VHS to DVD. I was going to use S-Video output for the video portion. Despite the specs on this website indicating that there is one there is no such output jack. I'm thinking of returning it.

DVD Player crapped out after one year.......2005-09-06
I also began having the incorrect disc problems that I've read about on here. The VCR still works, but hte DVD side is useless. I understand that DVD players sometimes just quit on you, but after not even one year? To me that's a sign on bad quality. I'm giving up JVC after this as well. I'm sticking to Sony or giving another brand a shot.
Incorrect Disc.......2005-08-16
I love the style of this, but after a couple years, the DVD is giving me problems. It doesn't even work anymore and I use my broken PS2 Now. I wouldn't recommend this, I'm just going to upgrade to a recorder now. I wish it would work but I guess i'm giving up on JVC. I really did like this one... before it stopped working. The dvd player gave me problems probably after a year of having it.
Does what it says it will.......2004-04-05
This is a nice combo DVD/VCR. I've had it for a couple of years now and have had no problems. That's really why I'm writing; I want to let people know the ones with problems are probably the exception rather than the rule.
The only disadvantages to this product for me:
1) On the VCR, you can't FF by time (a panasonic feature; FF a given number of minutes)
2) Once you set the VCR program, you must hit TIMER (not just power off) to get it to use the program. Okay, hitting TIMER will turn the power off, but let's say you want to record something later in the week. You will turn your deck on and off several times in that period. Do you want to hit TIMER every time? And by the way, hitting TIMER doesn't just turn the deck off, it switches to DVD mode. In theory, this is nice so you can still use your DVD player while recording a show. In practice you just end up turning off two things (VCR via TIMER, DVD via power) most of the time.
3) No S-video input. I had to buy a S-video to composite video adapter to record something from my PC video card. By the way, don't do this; the quality is pretty low.
Little advantages to this product for me:
1) Front panel inputs; I use this to dub from my video camera very often
2) Comprehensive remote; for me, the more buttons the better. I hate on-screen menus. How can I see what the picture looks like when I adjust the tracking if 88% of the screen is the tracking menu?
3) Many flavors of A/V OUTPUT: digital audio (coax and optical), composite video (of course), component video (nice for home theater), S video.
Bottom line: A good combo deck for the money.
Great Combo Package!.......2004-01-20
I decided to wait over a year to write a review on this unit, and thankfully my opinion since the first day I got it hasn't changed. It's wonderful! I was suprised to find a full feature DVD player included. A friend of mine bought a relatively expensive DVD player and it didn't have some of the features this unit has (albeit its a bit smaller). I have never experienced performance issues while using the DVD player in 12+ months. Zoom feature comes in handy as well, if you rent DVDs and don't necessarily want the whole long apect ratio. VCR works great as well. Recordings done in SP look excellent, colors are great and its not grainy at all. EP recordings look great for being EP as well, if you sit back on the couch you can't tell the difference. Only problem there is sometimes it takes a few seconds to track with EP, but it normally finds the right setting fairly quickly. The remote is easy to use once you learn it. It can be confusing at first, but now I wouldn't use anything else. It can control all the TV functions as well at the combo unit. If you want to take a small step into the world of DVD players, but not let go of your old VHS tapes, this is the player for you. Especially now, with the price quite reduced from when I bought it. You will not be disappointed!
Incorrect disc!.......2003-10-20
I am a big JVC fan, but I do not like this model, I was suspiscious when I saw several units in the return section of the store. I bought one anyway (new) and must say I am not happy. The unit sends out clicks to the receiver once in a while, the transition between scenes is not always smooth,(like a little pause) and while it is still fairly new I can't get any DVD,CD or even a DVD headcleaner to work. All I get is a "incorrect disc" message.

Product Description
The JVC line of DVD/VCR combination units features a new deck that delivers convenience, quality and affordability. The JVC HR-XVC29S is a new entry-level combo that offers outstanding performance combined with convenience features that make operation quick and easy. Two key features make the new combo easy to use. With JVC's Auto Select feature all that's required to begin DVD or VHS playback is to insert a cassette or disc - it's that simple, and works with both the RF and video outputs. And a new feature this year is one-touch replay, which at the touch of a button on the slim, redesigned remote replays the last 10 seconds of DVD or seven seconds of VCR programming - ideal for those situations when a bit of dialog was missed or that funny moment needs to be replayed immediately. The HR-XVC29S offers playback of DVD Video, CD Audio, CD-R/RW, JPEG (CD-R/RW), Video CD/SVCD and DVD-R/-RW (video format). Other DVD features include a high performance one-chip AV decoder featuring adaptive geometrical chroma mapping, coaxial PCM audio output, 5.1-channel Dolby Digital/DTS digital output, component video output, multi-session CD playback, 10 bit/54MHz video digital-to-analog converter (DAC), 192kHz/24 bit audio DAC, and Express Play Start that initiates program play about five seconds after the tray is closed. Other features offered by the HR-XVC29S includes S-VHS Quasi-Playback (SQPB) and a multi-language color on-screen display.
Amazon.com Product Description
Why fuss with multiple hookups? JVC's HR-XVC29S combination DVD player and VCR lets you enjoy cutting-edge DVDs alongside your existing library of videocassettes--and you won't have to continually switch inputs on your TV whenever you switch viewing formats from the combo unit. The silver HR-XVC29S provides a DVD and a VHS signal through both its composite-video (yellow RCA) and standard RF video outputs. You'll also enjoy MP3 music, JPEG image CD, and video-mode DVD-RW and DVD-R media playback, as well as hi-fi VHS performance. And, you can tape something while you're watching a DVD--get the rental back on time without having to miss your favorite TV show.
With JVC's Auto Select feature, all that's required to begin DVD or VHS playback is to insert a cassette or disc. That's it--the component will begin playback of whichever format it senses. And, at the touch of a button on the unit's slim, newly designed remote control, the HR-XVC29S will replay either the last 10 seconds of a DVD or the last 7 seconds of a videocassette.
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the HR-XVC29S stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs via JVC's Direct Digital Progressive Scan feature. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Shared (DVD/VCR) composite-video and RF outputs--in addition to DVD-only S-video outputs--together accommodate all standard (non-HD) TVs.
Exclusive VCR features include 1-month, 8-event programming, index search, auto clock setting, and auto tracking. The unit offers an RF input for cable-box signals. S-VHS quasi playback lets you watch, in regular VHS resolution, tapes recorded in Super-VHS, normally only compatible with more expensive S-VHS machines. A set of front-panel audio/video inputs accommodates a camcorder or gaming console.
A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals for DVD can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (RCA coaxial) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.
What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo unit, a multi-brand, full-function remote control, remote batteries, a composite-video/stereo analog-audio interconnect, a user's manual, and warranty information.

Same thing as reviewer "Lexi".......2006-04-17
JVC has such a great reputation, I didn't hesitate to purchase this player, since I still have some VCR tapes that I didn't want to get rid of as well as DVDs.
I had the unit for under a year, and one day I tried to play at VCR and the picture just froze. Same thing happened when I tried to play a DVD.
I checked completely. My television is fine; it is the unit.
Very disappointed.
JVC DVD/VHS.......2006-03-24
I am writing a review for a JVC DVD/VHS player which I bought 2 years ago. It was a great unit, but all of a sudden, the picture of both the DVD and VHS just turned to black shadows. What a dissapointment after only 2 years. I hesitate to buy another JVC player.
fine piece of gear.......2006-03-08
i have owned nothing but jvc's for the past 25 years. this unit offers a fine picture on extended play and excellent audio. of all the jvc's ive owned, this is by far the easiest to program for timing to record a program. i liked it so well i just bought another. i think it is a superior product.
Product Description
The HR-XVC25 DVD/VCR combo incorporates features that consumers expect in JVC products such as SQPB, which allows the VCR section to playback SVHS recordings. The DVD section is full featured allowing playback of DVD, CD-A, DVD+-RW, MP3, WMA, and JPEG images on a CD-R.
Amazon.com Product Description
Set yourself up to enjoy just about any current media format with JVC's versatile HR-XVC25U combination DVD player and VCR. With MP3/WMA and JPEG image CD playback and hi-fi VHS performance, the unit is built to satisfy your music and home-theater needs. The HR-XVC25U plays not only DVD and multiple CD formats, but DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, CD-RW, VCD, and SVCD as well.
For the DVD player, top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. Now you can also enjoy cutting-edge DVDs alongside an existing library of videocassettes. The unit even offers an RF output for use with older TVs that lack composite-video inputs. With S-VHS quasi playback, you'll be able to watch (in regular VHS resolution) tapes recorded in Super-VHS, normally only compatible with more expensive S-VHS machines. Advanced programming can be set for one months and eight events, and Commercial Skip search quickly skims over 30-second increments during playback to put your program back in front of you more quickly.
19 micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode. Auto Repeat (VHS: unlimited) and repeat playback (DVD: A-B) makes this unit a perfect choice for trade shows and conventions. Other VCR features include child lock (prevents unintended viewings), index search, skip search, auto clock setting, auto timer setting, and auto tracking.
Two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs (one for each component) channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.
What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo unit, a composite-video/stereo analog-audio interconnect, instruction manual, batteries, warranty info, and a multi-brand, full-function remote control that operates the combo player and most televisions.
Customer Reviews:
Limited in what DVD formats it will read.......2005-06-27
The product description here, as well as in other advertising, claims that the HR-XVC25U handles DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and DVD-R DVD formats. Before you buy, check with JVC. All they will claim is the DVD-Video format. This player DOES NOT handle DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-R correctly. It will read them up to a certain point, and then it will lock up; probably the result of a data buffer overload or some such technical detail. I have had this player for almost a year, and have not had any other issues with it, but with at least 5 different DVD formats in common use out there, you really should buy a player that can handle all of them; give this one a miss. I've already written Amazon about the mistake in advertising, but they're not the only ones making these claims. Everyone except JVC.
Excellent Combo.......2005-04-07
We bought this unit refurbished over a year ago. We use it almost daily and never have had any problems. In fact this product has performed excellent. I have read many negative reviews about this unit - so I thought I'd just try and balance it out a little. The only gripe we have is that the remote control is insane. The thing is huge and it has buttons all over it. It wasn't thought out very well, very confusing. Other than that it has been a great product.
Very nice and good customer service.......2004-11-23
The one I currently have is actually the second DVD/VCR combo... the first one arrived damaged in the mail. However, the return policy worked out great and I very quickly received a new one that has worked great over the past year. It does everything I could hope for (except for multi-national playing) and is extremely good. Also, fairly quiet and adaptable. Very much enjoying it.
Seemed like a good idea at the time.......2004-10-14
I bought this unit really cheap on closeout at an unnamed local chain (that also sells pretty good tools). Then we moved our Sony combo upstairs. I loved the remote but then noticed these faint, flashing diagonal lines (that started to drive me crazy) and it would not play tapes from the Sony combo that it replaced well even using manual tracking. I tried different connections and settings to no avail. The eject mechanisms sounded clunky and after reading the reviews it got on my nerves.
Well I took it back after 2 weeks to the local store and for just a few dollars more got a Sony combo on sale. Even though it has the teeny-weeny buttons the picture and sound rock. Thank You!!!
Product lasts only 1 year or less.......2004-09-28
We loved this unit until two weeks ago (after 11 months of use) when it suddenly died. Ok, it maybe cuz my two year old did something to it, but we are not sure. Even if he did shove something in the VCR slot (which is possible) - the DVD player should still work, and it won't! The power mechanism flickers on and off and seems to try to initialize the VCR and then poof - the whole unit dies. over and over. No need to try to fix such an inexpensive product.

Amazon.com Product Description
Set yourself up to enjoy just about any current media format with JVC's versatile HR-XVC20U combination DVD player and VCR. With MP3/WMA and JPEG image CD playback and hi-fi VHS performance, the unit is built to satisfy all music and home-theater needs. The HR-XVC20U plays DVD and multiple CD formats.
It's easy to enjoy cutting-edge DVDs alongside an existing library of videocassettes. The unit even offers an RF output for use with older TVs that lack composite-video inputs. With S-VHS quasi playback, you'll be able to watch (in regular VHS resolution) tapes recorded in Super-VHS, normally only compatible with more expensive S-VHS machines.
A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channels audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. Supplied accessories include a composite-video/stereo analog-audio interconnect, instruction manual, and a multi-brand remote control that operates the combo player and most televisions.
Customer Reviews:
Buyer beware !.......2005-11-13
I bought THREE of these things over the last two years ... at least two of them from Amazon.
Anyway, thanks to JVC I have several hundred dollars worth of DVD players that don't play DVDs ... and considering the other reviews here suggest there not a chance JVC will make good on them.
Don't listen to disgusted customers.......2004-11-13
Although some models of a certain product may have numerous defects, I'm happy to say that my JVC VCR/DVD combo has had no problems. I have recorded numerous times with the VCR section (with the picture still looking the same as the first day), I played all my DVDs (they haven't frozen), and have copied a DVD to a VHS. If you don't already have it, get it!! Please.
Very disappointed - Not a good buy.......2004-10-13
After about six months, had the same problems as other buyers - DVD player freezes. Sometimes restarts, sometimes doesn't. Emailed their customer service, but only got a line that my warrenty was up. There must be some systemic problem with how JVC is putting these together - I can't believe they don't know this. In either case, I have given up on using it as a DVD player and I'm in the market for a new one. Of course, I will never again be purchasing anything JVC.
I will never buy a JVC product again........2004-07-07
Is the worse buy in my life. The DVD does not work and to get a new one is cheaper than repair. JVC Colombia unable to fix it.

I would not buy this product again. After about 6 months (and perhaps 20 hours of use) the DVD player started freezing images or playing too slow. Took it to a local shop and had the DVD unit replaced as some expense to me (JVC agreed to pay about half and I had to pay the rest, about $60, as the warrenty had expired). Now a couple of months later the DVD player is starting to do the same thing again and I have to decide if I want to go through the repair thing again. Probably not. I am disgusted! The VHS unit has worked great and has seen a lot more hours of use.
