5 out of 5 stars Form, Fit & Function in a Nice Package.......2007-01-16

Having recently upgraded my home theatre system I needed a multi-channel audio video receiver that would supply multiple input control and functionality in a relatively compact space. I wanted a receiver that would provide HDMI switching and be capable of powering large, wide range speakers. The JVC turned out to be ideal on both counts due to it's low profile yet ample power reserve allowing easy placement in my rather limited widescreen tv support shelf.

Although my HDMI DVD player interfaced beautifully, my cable service provided DVR didn't like the JVC's HDMI input and refused to pass hi-def material through the receiver. This necessitated using the DVR's and receiver's component outputs and inputs respectively. A call to my cable provider confirmed the DVR box's bad behavior and I was told I would have to wait for the providor's next upgrade. The good news is that I wasn't able to discern any significant loss of detail in hi-def material on a 1080P capable 73" widescreen DLP tv by using the component video and optical audio outputs. Your results may differ.

One feature of the JVC that I found particularly useful was it's built-in wireless USB audio streaming function. Installing the provided small antenna on the receiver and plugging in the transmitter to my desktop computer located in a different room was a snap. Now I can easily stream high quality music (uncompressed) and internet radio stations from my computer through my home theatre audio system. One caveat to be aware of is that like wireless internet, the provided USB wireless transmitter is affected by 2.4GHz home telephone systems and, believe it or not, some microwave ovens. If you have a 5.8GHz phone system you'll be fine. Wish I could say the same about the microwave.

While relatively easy to install, the JVC setup procedure requires considerable review of the comprehensive manual. I found that I had to jump around the instruction manual quite a bit before I was able to use the receiver effectively. The on screen guides are easy to follow although one has to drill through multiple menues.

The provided remote control works very well and features a retractable cover that allows one to access less used functions easily while simultaneously keeping the device uncluttered. The instructions on how to add additional external devices were very straightforward and worked flawlessly.

If you're in the market for an excellent sounding HDMI capable multi-channel AV receiver with reasonable funtionality and a relatively small footprint than I encourage you to consider this JVC receiver.

4 out of 5 stars Great but be aware of wireless interference.......2007-01-06

The price, features, performance here is top notch. Everyone is having issues with HDMI connections right now so don't let that stop you, it is a problem for everyone and there is a learning curve.

The sound from the receiver is very good and the class D amp does run hot, they all do. This one is pumping out 150W per channel so the left side of the unit gets very hot. You will not want to put in in an enclosed audio cabinet without an additonal fan in the cabinet.

The usb wireless connection is a lot of fun and the sound quality is excellent as long as no other devices that interfere are running while it is in use. For me, my 5.8ghz cordless phone and microwave cause interference when they are in use. You can hold down the button for 3 seconds on the usb transmitter to try and change wireless channels but this did not help when the devices I mentioned were in use. I have not tried the corded connection.

Overall this is the best deal around for an AV receiver with a good amp and all the current tech features you could need.

2 out of 5 stars Go else where if you want reliability!!!.......2006-12-01

I received this stereo on 11/29/06 as promised. I really liked the sound from my computer. A wonderful idea!!!! I just wish other manufactures would follow suit.

Out the box, my HDMI worked flawlessly. However, when I hooked up my DVD player, I got sound but no picture. When I hooked up my VCR, the same thing happened. I called JVC tech support and the first tier could not help me so I was told the second tier support would call me back in 2 hours. After 3 hours of waiting, I called JVC again. I was told by one representative that the hook up would need to be all HDMI or all composite or component this is totally different from the manual. It clearly states that this receiver will up convert all signals to HDMI.
I changed everything over and did get the DVD player to work. Actually, it was just a pass through and no switching took place. I then tried and tried in vain to get the VCR to show video; but no such luck.

I called JVC again; I was finally told that I might have something wrong with the switching and the unit would need to be repaired. (This has been a large problem for this particular model) I then said that this is a brand new system and I should not need to get it repaired. Well, I relented and asked where the nearest shop was for a repair; I was then told there were none near and the unit would need to be sent to the manufacturer for repair.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS REVIEW; I WOULD LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR RELIABILITY.

Amazon stands behind what they sell; and I could not be happier with their customer service. Unit goes back tomorrow.

Now, I am thinking about the Onkyo TX-SR674.

4 out of 5 stars Nice stereo!.......2006-11-14

The USB plug is excelent. I hook up my lap top and have 2 weeks of non stop music. The sound is very good, just wish they would change there speaker terminals from the too close together screw type to any thing else!
The HDMI plug makes a world of diffrance with the amount of cords you need, just one!

5 out of 5 stars Great receiver and GREAT JVC SUPPORT!.......2006-11-03

I received this receiver a couple days ago and had many problems with setup. I wanted this device for a couple of reasons, mainly because it includeded HDMI switching but also because my 42" LCD hangs on the wall and my components are about 35 feet away and I didn't want to run cables for every component to the TV. I wanted 1 HDMI cable to run from this device to the TV and 1 set of speaker wire. All other components I wanted to plug into this receiver.

At first attempt, I got video but no sound through the cable box, my DVD had sound but no video and my wireless PC Link worked flawlessly within 5 minutes of setup. I spent nearly 4 hours attempting everything I could think of, but failed to get it to work.

The next night, I decided to call JVC. A tech answered the phone on the second ring! She spent about 30 minutes on the phone with me trying to get it worked out but couldn't so she transferred me to the next level of support. He helped me immensely and in 20 minutes I was up and running perfectly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PRO'S:
Single point of communication between components and TV.
W/the included wireless transmitter, you can stream music from any PC or laptop and it will play through your speakers.
Many on screen configurable options.
Remote controls all of my components.
Sound is excellent.
Many input options.
Sleek looking.

CONS:
Difficult initial setup - my cable box had to be connected via component cables to the receivers VCR component in jacks. Who could guess that? There is another port labeled "DBS" - that seems like a more logical place.
Can ONLY connect 2 High Def devices at a time (1 component + 1 HDMI, etc).

A couple other reviewers here stated that you cannot play sound through your TV when connected to this receiver. Well, it's a receiver...it's not made to utilize your TV's speakers, that would be useless. However, if your TV has detachable speakers, you can just add speaker wire to them and connect them to the receiver and everything will work fine.

Product Description

7.1 Channel / 110 Watts per Channel x 7 Channels / USB PC Link / 3D Headphone Jack / Game Sound Mode / All Channel Stereo Mode / BLACK

Amazon.com Product Description

Surround speakers don't amount to much without a quality receiver, and this JVC 7.1-channel model plays the role perfectly. Equipped with a full complement of surround decoders, including Dolby Digital EX, DTS (ES, Neo:6, and 96/24), and Dolby Pro Logic (II and IIx)--the receiver breathes life into home theater audio, delivering spectacularly crisp, explosive sound for both movies and music. The decoded formats are complemented by JVC's digital audio processor (DAP), which creates dynamic audio soundstages that mimic the acoustics of the most popular live venues. Among the multichannel DAP selections are Theater, Hall, Dance Club, Live Club, and Pavilion.

Internally, the receiver is equipped with a hybrid feedback digital amplifier (version III) and a DSP digital equalizer. The amp runs at 770 watts of total power (110 watts x 7 in surround mode, 110 watts x 2 in stereo mode), which should satisfy all but the largest listening environments. To create an even wider sound field, the receiver offers a virtual surround back function that simulates the effect of a rear surround speaker even if you don't own one. And if you're not quite ready to upgrade to full surround but want to keep your options open, you can employ the receiver's 3D Phonic virtual surround function, which simulates the dynamic realism of full surround sound through your system's pair of stereo speakers.

Busy listeners will appreciate the RX-D206B's AV Compu Link function, which facilitates simple one-touch coordination between your JVC audio and video components. Simply pop a DVD into your JVC DVD player and the RX-D206B automatically activates the receiver and TV while switching them to the proper modes. Meanwhile, people who live in large households will delight in the 3-D Headphone feature, which creates an out-of-the-box surround effect through any ordinary pair of stereo headphones (not included). The receiver even lets you stream audio directly from your computer using its USB PC link, which works with both PCs and Macs.

The RX-D206B isn't just for music and movie fans, as it also offers a Game mode that's designed to enhance the gaming experience. The game mode offers four different settings--RPG (role-playing game), sport, action, and night--each of which creates a customize sound field for the genre type.

Components connect to the unit through its comprehensive series of inputs and outputs, including three digital audio inputs (two optical, one coaxial), four analog audio inputs, and two analog audio outputs. The RX-D206B also acts as an audio/video switcher, with two component video inputs and one output, three S-video inputs and three outputs, and three composite inputs and three outputs.

The RX-D206B is backed by a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Product.......2007-01-09

Slim design, excellent sound and very easy to use. This was an upgrade from a previous JVC reciever that I had and this one was designed the same way that my previous one was. Once set up everything runs through the device so that you change the setting on the reciever from Cable to DVD and the picture on the TV changes. Also it is about the least expensive 7.1 reciever that I have found and easy backwards compatibility with 5.1 that I still use. All in all this is an excellent product that is worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this one, you'll be disappointed.......2006-12-12

This is the worst decision I've made in purchasing consumer electronics. It is not worth the money. The quality is quite ppor and the hype about persormance is just that - HYPE. I should have returned it but for the moment it is in my garage under an inch of dust.

1 out of 5 stars one star as a coffee warmer.......2006-12-05

On top of the case of the JVC RX-D206B is a white sticker printed in red with the message
"Caution: To protect from risk of fire or electrical shock don't put any objects on top/sides, don't block them, and do keep proper ventilation." The case for this receiver/amplifier became too hot to touch, and since it was my intention to install this device in a cabinet for a bedroom music system, I felt it presented too much risk even with ventilation fans installed. I had bought the device for its low profile, but perhaps that is its inherent problem. In any case I either received a defective item or it suffers from a defective design. Therefore I have returned it to the seller and purchased a stereo amplifier as a replacement.

5 out of 5 stars Love the simplicity.......2006-10-26

I bought this receiver for two reasons: one, I already had a JVC television and I like my components to match; and two, simplicity. So many receivers out there have a ridiculous number of features that I just don't want. I consider myself to be pretty tech-savvy, but I also put a high value on clean design. This receiver has 7.1 channels, but I would have been even happier if it only had 5.1 and was $20 cheaper. I bought some Polk sub/satellite speakers to go along with it, and everything sounds great.

This technology uses two digital feedback loops to generate a precise signal and two analog feedback loops to ensure that the final signal is identical to the original.

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great product for the money.......2007-04-02

JVC has always built a quality product and this one is no exception. One of the features that lead me to purchase this model is the USB port. I could not find a comparable model with a usb port. I use i-tunes on my laptop and connect to the receiver. Then I have a vast jukebox at my disposal.
On to some other areas. First of all it has lots of clean, "pucnhy" power. It does sound a little harsh or sharp though. I'm thinking the digital amps instead of an analog amp is why. I was able to tune it to a pretty good sound using the EQ. With a subwoofer and a decent set of speakers it sounds fine.
Some other reviews say it runs hot. It is hotter than my old JVC, however I don't think it is a big deal. JVC installed an internal fan on this model to keep things cool enough.
The initial settings and controls are a little complex, however, once you get an understanding of how to navigate the menus it's easy.
Overall a great buy. There are others out there, but none with the features this one packs for the money.

4 out of 5 stars This receiver meets all of my expectations.......2007-03-09

I was looking for a single video to TV solution with excellent surround sound and this receiver fits the bill perfectly. While some have complained about the complexity in configuring inputs, I really didn't find it to be that tough. The only problem I ran into is I could not send my Xbox 360 video signal through the HDMI output until I changed the 360 video configuration from 720p to 1080i. Overall, I recommend this receiver very highly ( to anyone that doesn't require a 1080p video signal - this receiver only supports up to 1080i ).

3 out of 5 stars Vey good for the money but missing some important things.......2007-01-17

You certainly get good value on this receiver. The sound quality was average. It has plenty of features found on more expensive items. The biggest problem is that it does not support 1080p over HDMI, only up to 1080i. So if you don't mind not having that feature it a great buy, otherwise you will have to get a different receiver

5 out of 5 stars unbelievable value.......2006-12-14

First the good news. There is not a receiver out there near this price that will do the things that this does. I first got interested in this receiver after reviewing a dozen receivers from onkyo, sony, and pioneer with HDMI imputs and outputs. Unfortunately, in anything in my price range, the HDMI usually wasn't truely functional in those receivers, and merely passed through the content from the source to the tv. The JVC actually processes the information and allows you to hook up all your components (I have game cube, xbox 360 with a high def dvd, and a cable box) all through the receiver, and then all output to the tv through one hdmi cable. Everyone in my household can figure out how to use the devices they want. The video circuitry in the JVC receiver also vastly improved the picture of the non HD stations on the Sony SXRD tv. It was almost unwatchable before, and now is a respectable image, thanks to the deinterlacing technology in the receiver. An unexpected but greatly appreciated benefit.
The manual and setup of this receiver, however, is quite a nightmare. I wasn't able to use the precise sound setup until I finally figured out that my surround speakers needed to be connected to the surround terminals instead of the surround back terminals. (It doesn't mention this in the manual). It also took hours to correctly assign the proper imputs to the proper devices. Once it is set up however, this receiver is a dream and a steal for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent receiver with confusing setup and manual.......2006-12-12

Compared to my last receiver (an older Sony model) this offers much better performance. It breathed new life into my old mediocre speakers. The HDMI conversion feature works excellently, I have my Xbox hooked up with its component cables and my HD cable box hooked up with a HDMI cable; one HDMI is all that runs to the TV to carry the video signal (and digital audio too if your TV supports it). Picture quality from the Xbox is just as good as if I had it plugged directly into the TVs component inputs.

Configuring the speakers was painless; you plug in the included earbud microphones, sit in your regular viewing position and it runs a series of tests while monitoring the volume through the earbuds. Worked great.

Unfortunately, configuring the inputs is another story entirely. Assigning the video and audio inputs you want for each device is a nightmare compared to any other receiver I've used. Thanks to the extremely poor manual and convoluted device assignment method, it took me about three hours and a major headache to get the two devices hooked up correctly. I dread having to add another device to it, as I'll probably throw the two I've got out of their configuration in the process.

We often watch movies late at night while the kids are sleeping so the 'Midnight Mode' sounded appealing. I was hoping that it would be a little easier to access. As it is, you have to push a couple of buttons on the receiver itself and then scroll through a menu to select the Midnight Mode Level that you desire. It is not selectable using the remote. The manual was no help in figuring this out either; like other features it tells you that midnight mode is selectable but doesn't tell you how to actually select it. Once it's selected though, it does work great. I would have thought that a feature like this could be turned on with the push of a single button though.

Another pet peeve of mine is that selecting devices from the receiver requires you to turn the left jog wheel until it reaches the one you want. Each device has it's own label and LED indicator on the front of the unit, so I don't see why they didn't just give each device its own button.

I bought this from J&R through Amazon; it shipped the following day by UPS and was in my hands earlier than expected.

Setup problems aside, I do really enjoy this receiver and there isn't one out there with a better feature set for the money. I wouldn't recommend it to someone new to the world of sound receivers, but if you know what you're doing and don't mind taking a lot of time to set it up then this is the receiver to buy.

5 out of 5 stars SONIC DREAM.......2007-05-24

Great unit with excellent sound. Some people may find connecting other
components to it a bit tricky but by taking a bit of time, this will not
be a problem.

4 out of 5 stars Good receiver but a little confusing.......2007-01-11

I am not into the home theater stuff but do like my stereo. This receiver sounds great and the wireless PC connection prevented me from having to look for a CD player that can play MP3's. For someone not familiar with home theater, connecting this can be confusing. To me it would have been helpful if the instructions had said which connections can be used for stereo components (e.g., I ended up with the CD changer connected via the TV audio input). The receiver does sound great though and has some nice (but also confusing) set-up items.

5 out of 5 stars Mighty Mite Measures Up!.......2006-12-18

Phew -- of all things I needed over the busy holiday weekend -- my beloved old NAD "front" power amp lost a channel. I know that this means a two to three hundred dollar repair bill, so I decided it was time to pop for a modern, gulp, home theater receiver. Now you must understand -- I was an early adopter of a home theater setup way back when a/v receivers were regarded as devices incapable of producing superior sound. So I had a big NAD amp for the front two channels, a small NAD amp for the rear two, an NAD tuner for AM/FM, and a Sony Dolby Pro decoder to pull it all together. But fast forward to the present. The NAD dies, I had just laid out major coin for car repairs, and I wanted good sound but I didn't want to spend a fortune. I looked at the Panasonic digital receiver but discovered it didn't have a single pair of outputs for recording off radio, say. No good. Still I liked the idea of the "digital" amp -- as Jessica Simpleton says, "I totally don't know what that means, but I know I want it." These days digital amp means a small unit with low power requirements. Then I found out that JVC has the digital technology, in this extremely compact and attractive receiver. I read somewhat mixed reviews of the receiver online but decided to take a flyer, based on the i/o options, digital amp, looks, and price. Am I glad I did! What am amazing little receiver! The main gripes I read online about the JVC receivers concern their tendency to run hot -- yeah, the box gets warm, and you wouldn't want to park your beer or a dish of ice cream next to the vents on the left of the receiver, but it doesn't get any warmer than my old NADs did -- and its built-in fan is much quieter than the old outboard fan I installed to keep the NADs cool. I was somewhat put off by the high distortion spec at the rated power (0.9%), but apparently there's something about digital amps that causes high distortion specs the way the power is rated. Suffice it to say, this receiver puts out GREAT sound and GOBS of it in my medium-sized listening room. I haven't heard the slightest hint of distortion. And the pint-sized prodigy seems to be able to do it all day without shutting down. Really, I am a semi-pro musician with years of listening experience, and I think this JVC puts out spectacular sound. Great imaging, great bass, great everything. All coming from a little receiver about half the height of conventional units, with a sleek design that Bang & Olufsen would be proud of. (The picture doesn't do the unit justice; when you turn the receiver on, a blue band lights up above the display -- sexy!) What's more -- no house lights dim! That's because this machine uses just 150 watts, or less than half the power my old monster rig used -- speak about a win-win situation! Otherwise the amp has a nice delay so there are no ugly speaker pops when you turn the unit on. And the receiver keeps its memory settings if the unit is unplugged. One little feature JVC missed: the unit has a sleep timer so you can nod off to music, but there's no clock or alarm clock function. Phooey. Finally there are a number of features here I haven't tried, including the ability to play wireless signals from your computer. Next computer! Meanwhile I am enjoying this wonderful sound, and I just hope my neighbors will show patience and charity as I give this baby a workout. Well done, JVC!

I am updating this review after living with the receiver for a few weeks. I LOVE THIS RECEIVER!!! You may have seen Sony ads in which they say their flat-screen monitor is the first TV your wife will actually like. Well, guys, this JVC may be the first home theater receiver your wife will like. Can such a little box put out sound as good as conventional behemoth receivers costing twice as much and measuring twice the size? It sure can. I can't get over how good this little receiver's sound is. The bass is tight and full. The midrange is so detailed I'm hearing stuff I've never heard before. Transients are effortless, and percussive effects pack more punch and power (not to mention an armload of alliteration!) The imaging is so precise and stable I don't need a center channel speaker! I think the tuner performance is fine as well, comparing favorably with my beloved old NAD separate. My point is -- anybody considering a new receiver should insist on one that incorporates digital amplifier technology, like this JVC. You'll enjoy spectacular sound, your wife will love the compact design -- and you'll both appreciate saving money on electricity every month!

I'm back again two months after purchase. I just read a sniffy article on digital amps from some high-end reviewer claiming that poorly designed units can suffer from excessive harmonic distortion or introduce other unwelcome coloration into the signal. As it happens, I just had the chance to hear the CBS Orchestra live at the Letterman show, and I can certify that the sound of the band I hear at home at night is EXACTLY what I heard live at the show. This is a SUPERB sounding receiver, and if the quite tangible benefits of digital amplification appeal to you -- compact size, reduced power consumption -- I urge you to give this JVC a try. You will NOT be disappointed! (And NO, I don't work for JVC, nor was I even aware of digital amps before I was tasked with replacing my ancient home theater rig...)

I'm back again in April with a new laptop -- and a chance to try the USB Wireless feature on the receiver. It works like a champ! Just plug the little transmitter into a spare USB port. Two lights come on. Turn on the receiver and flip the "Learn ID" switch; then hold the ID button on the transmitter until the L and R indicators light up on the receiver. Then select "USB Wireless" as the source on the receiver, and voila -- glorious PC sound blasting out of your home theater setup. Ex-cellent!

4 out of 5 stars Great Receiver, does run hot, but you'll love this unit.......2006-09-28

It does run hot, with only side vents, none on the top, but the smaller package is the likely culprit.

The wireless USB is great, saves me from using a 25ft Toslink from the PC.

Setup was fairly simple but I did run into issues with the mixing of digital inputs and Analog. I spent several hours trying to get it set up, then called JVC. Support was only open during regular business hours, but within 5 minutes had me up and running. The manual could use some greater detail, seems to be written from the standpoint of someone who is totally familar with the unit, not a first time user.

Having said all that I still recomend the unit if: you don't put it in an enclosed cabinet, and you need the wireless usb (or can use USB cable too!)

4 out of 5 stars Good product with some flaws.......2006-07-25

I was initially very wary of purchasing this receiver. I had heard alot of bad things online about the JVC line, and had it not been for the price, I probably would have stayed away. That would have been a mistake.

To address the most common online complaints about this line: first, it does run hot. I would not place this receiver in a closed cabinet or too close to other components. The receiver has not overloaded or failed, so I do not see this as a major issue. The receiver did give off an "electronics" smell during the first couple of hours of usage. I have not noticed it since. I've not had any problems, so I haven't dealt with JVC customer service and cannot comment on it

THE GOOD:

First, connectivity is excellent. There are more a/v connection options that you will find available from more expensive receivers. In addition, the receiver can up-convert signals to component video quality. Thats a nice touch if you have an older DVD player or gaming system.

The wireless USB is great. Contrary to what I've read elsewhere, this is a one time hookup which involves getting the receiver to recognize the transmitter's signal. After that all you need to do is plug the transmitter into the USB when you want to transmit to the receiver and its good to go. The sound quality is equivalent to other wireless streamers that I've heard. This receiver saves you the additional $100-$150 that a wireless component would cost you.

The size is nice. Its much smaller than equivalent receivers, which is probably why the heat problem comes up with these models.

The surround and DSP options are pretty good. In addition, this receiver is capable of decoding most digital signals and processes and filters digital signals very nicely. Sound quality is very good for the price.

THE BAD:

The controller is poor. The controller from my old Pioneer receiver was capable of controlling or learning just about any function for any component. This receiver has limited codes, and from what I can see, no learning mode. I'll be ditching it for a universal. In addition it is not backlighted.

This unit has two component video inputs. However, the receiver can only accept a signal from one component input at a time. If you want to switch to the other input you actually have to go in and change the settings on the receiver Very inconvenient and unless you only have one component input on your monitor, not worth the time. This is my major complaint.

The receiver does not have an onscreen display, which is odd for a receiver that has these video options and this suggested retail price. As a consequence, setup can be a hassle. I consider myself relatively knowledgeable about this stuff and still spent about 3-4 hours with the setup. The instruction book is not the most helpful either.

All in all the positives outweigh the negative by a wide margin. That being said, I would not recommend this receiver for a price above $300. However, the going price on the net appears be be low $200s, and at this price, this is a steal. I personally feel that the wireless USB makes the thing a worthwhile purchase by itself.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-07-20

I had this receiver for about 8 months. The good points are that it had HDMI in and out, though only passthrough, and it sounded okay. The bad points were that it ran a little hot, and the interface with the remote or the faceplate of the receiver were awkward and annoying. Also, the manual was edited and organized by an 8th grader, it's very hard to follow.

I think for the money you can do better with an Onkyo, but if you got a really great deal on this, it would do the job.

Product Description

7.1 Channel / 110 Watts per Channel x 7 Channels / USB PC Link / 3D Headphone Jack / Game Sound Mode / All Channel Stereo Mode / SILVER

And if you're not quite ready to upgrade to full surround but want to keep your options open, you can employ the receiver's 3D Phonic virtual surround function, which simulates the dynamic realism of full surround sound through your system's stereo speakers.

Busy listeners will appreciate the RX-D205S's AV Compu Link function, which facilitates simple one-touch coordination between your JVC audio and video components. Simply pop a DVD into your JVC DVD player and the RX-D205S automatically activates the receiver and TV while switching them to the proper modes.

The RX-D205S isn't just for music and movie fans, as it also offers a Game mode that's designed to enhance the gaming experience.

The RX-D205S also acts as an audio/video switcher, with two component video inputs and one output, three S-video inputs and three outputs, and three composite inputs and three outputs.

The RX-D205S is backed by a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this sound!.......2007-07-21

First off, I bought this mainly for music listening, but I will be using it for movies also.

I always had personal a problem with digital receivers...they had clarity but lacked warmth and a powerful sound. Let me tell you, this has everything I like in a sound... digital clarity, no distortion, but yet it does not sacrifice warmth and presence- better described as a powerful sound.

To be straight forward, the sound quality for this is awsome!!!
My set up with this is my computer, using FLAC files because I am an audiophile, through usb. The price is amazing for what I got! This unit sounds better than a Sony ES receiver that I listened to at a store that cost over $1000.00.

I am so glad I bought this. Furthermore, I cant believe I got a such a good deal at the price it goes for. Take it from a picky person for audio, this unit gets the job done far beyond the call of duty.

Yay JVC!

Advantages
-JVCs Hybrid Feedback technology!
-Digital Clarity
-Strong Highs
-Strong and tight base
-Sound has warmth and power to it...does not sound like a typical sterile digital source that lacks fullness.
-Price and value...what a steal for what your getting!
-USB Connection

Cons
- Wish USB was in the back.
- Wish the appearance was as fancy as it's previous model, the jvc rx f10.

3 out of 5 stars Everything Works...mostly, kinda.......2007-06-09

I've had my RX-D201S continuously powered on for the last six months, and it still works. The unit does get very warm. The USB connection has worked great from day one, and that is why I bought this unit. A paid $168.00 (shipping included), and I thought it was a good price, since a good USB sound card will cost that much itself.
The only problem I've had is that a small amount of noise (clicks & pops) is generated over the USB connection. The noise only occurs when playing 44.1khz audio (most all CD & Mp3-not music video or movies) through USB. This could be a fault with the unit or my laptop. I'd like to ask JVC customer support about it, but JVC does not seem to offer customer support, as none of my emails were answered.
Bottom Line: You won't mistake this unit for one that costs $300+

3 out of 5 stars Speaker wire connectors are cheap.......2007-03-13

I was looking at the entire series of JVC receivers, the 205, 211, 302, 411 and 702. I almost got a 211 but I noticed the speaker wire connectors on the back are the cheap push in clamps. Those tend to break off bits of
wire and cause short circuits. The 702 uses the good screw down connectors. The 402 uses half of each! I strongly suggest you go to [...], click on support, enter the model number and download the owners manual before buying. The description on Amazon only scratches the surface. Otherwise these look like good electronics although I would get a lower end model since they will all shortly be obsolete.

4 out of 5 stars I love digital amp receivers!.......2007-02-08

I originally bought the 401 but exchanged it for the 205 as the 401 was much too complicated for my purposes. I also found that the HDMIs on the 401 are for convience (fewer cables) and does not make any noticable improvements over component connects. When I up-grade to HD-DVD I can still run an HDMI into my LCD-HDTV with a digital audio out to the 205. The 205 does not have all the extra features of the 401 but it performs just as well. I use the 205 for surround in my bedroom driving 7 JBL sats and sub. It doesn't seem to have quite the power of my living room Panny XR55 (driving big athenas and sunfire sub) but it still does the job remarkably well. I do think it's more attractive than the panny, more compact and costs less. It gets warm but so did the 401. The remote is small but I had planned to buy a Harmony universal anyway so it was a non issue.

5 out of 5 stars Superb sound quality, excellent feature set.......2007-01-28

I am using the unit for audio applications, not home theater (which I may try later). The receiver drives my Klipsch speakers providing a sound that is very distinct and yet without sharp edges. All members of my critical-eared family love the sound. The direction connection via USB works wonderfully with my Digital Juke Box (MediaMonkey). This important feature is not available in most competitive products. In fact, I was so happy with this product that within two weeks I bought a second one for another room.

I like the surround sound generated through DSP for 2 channel stereo recordings. The product has a ton of features. It takes some time to read the manual but it is mostly clear. There are so many different environments in which this product may be used that setting it up properly will take more than 5 minutes. But the large number of setup options (a good thing) makes this unavoidable. The setup procedure is implemented fairly well.

The value one receives for this modestly priced product is incredible. JVC has done a great job.

Product Description

The RX-D401S is a new audio/video receiver that offers the convenience and performance of HDMI up-conversion. It features USB inputs for streaming audio from a PC and JVC's Hybrid Feedback digital amplifier technology.HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a digital audio/video interface that allows a single cable to carry uncompressed audio and video signals in digital form, offering high quality signal transmission plus the simplicity of a single connection. With HDMI-equipped source components, such as a DVD player or cable/satellite box, just one cable connects the component to the JVC receiver. On the output side, a single HDMI cable connects the receiver to the display. To ensure the best possible video signal, regardless of the source, the RX-D401S up-converts composite, S-Video and component signals to HDMI. Handling the HDMI up-conversion is a Genesis deinterlacer that incorporates DCDi (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing) technology from Faroudja. It includes two HDMI inputs and one output. The new JVC receiver also features a USB connection that allows music to be sent from a PC to the receiver for playback. The connection is wireless on the RX-D702B, using the 2.4GHz band to transmit uncompressed signals over a range of approximately 100 feet. The receiver comes with a transmitter that plugs into the computer's USB input. Interference from other devices is automatically detected by the transmitter and an interference-free band is automatically selected. To deliver the best possible sound quality when playing compressed audio files, JVC receiver features the company's exclusive CC Converter, which uses advanced digital signal processing to improve the quality of these files. The CC Converter computes the data that was lost during the digital-to-analog conversion and recreates the original signal.

1 out of 5 stars HDMI did not work and one of the digital inputs.......2007-06-15

One HDMI input gave me video but no sound. The other gave me nothing.
That was on the TV. It was able to pick up sound on the receiver. The reason I bought it was for the Dual HDMI ports as a switcher and for the HDMI for my Toshiba HD D1. The optical input over the DBS component input kept shutting of the receiver every 10 minutes. The other optical and coaxial worked fine. This is the most quirky reciever I have ever used. I have had 2 Sony receivers and a Pioneer and they all worked flawlessly. I am using the 5.1 inputs for my D1. If I had known this I could of bought another Pioneer.

3 out of 5 stars Some problems.......2007-05-12

Purchased this because it had two hdmi inputs. I was hoping to hook up my DVR and a high end DVD player. Found that using both hdmi inputs was problematic, ended up inputting the DVD player as Component video with optical sound. Tech support was baffled.

5 out of 5 stars No problems - Excellent Value for money.......2006-11-21

I purchased the 401S back in September, when the price dipped below 3 bills. At that price (and even at the current level) this receiver is excellent value for money.
What I was looking for was a small, HDMI-capable receiver to power a family room setup. There are certainly better choices for a full blown home theater, but for my needs this unit fit the bill perfectly. Currently, I have HD satellite and DVD player connected through the 2 HDMI inputs and a second DVD player/media server connected by component video and coax digital audio. Everything is channeled through a single HDMI cable to the HDTV, with sound being handled by a JBL SCS200 home theater system (another bargain from Amazon).
Everything works perfectly, setup was easy and performance is very good. HD images are delivered perfectly and sound quality is excellent for movies and also very good for music. I can't really say that I notice the 1080i "upconversion" of analog video (I tested S-Video and Component), but the simple fact that I can channel these through the HDMI output is a great feature.
I was concerned about the overheating problem reported by other reviewers and I agree that the unit does get pretty hot, but no more so than some other components, including my satellite receiver. As a tip, all heat build-up is on the left side of the unit (viewed from the front). There are vents on that side, but none on the top of the unit, so I don't quite understand the warnings about stacking devices on top. I actually have components stacked on top of the 401S and everything behind glass doors, but I have left plenty of space to the left of the unit and the rear of the cabinet has good ventilation. So far I have not had any problems, despite the unit often running all day. The unit has an overheat shut-off protection feature, but it has never been triggered.

Pros:
- Switching of all video (HDMI and analog) through a single HDMI output
- Small form factor
- Easy setup
- Simple to operate
- Very good overall performance

Cons:
- No renaming of inputs
- Would like to see HDMI passthrough when unit is off
- No on-screen menu
- USB input on front only

Conclusion: yes there may be better AV receivers out there, but you will have to pay at least twice (3 times?) the price for them. Perfect for a smaller HT setup.

2 out of 5 stars Has potential but needs work........2006-11-02

I bought this receiver back October of last year to replace an Onkyo receiver (which I adored until it started to malfunction). I got it at a decent price and it functioned well until this receiver also started to malfunction. Oddly enough, it started doing the same thing the Onkyo did. After the volume went past a certain level the receiver would just power off on its own. I sent it to be repaired by a local shop and they got it back to me three weeks later after replacing a part. After using the receiver for another month the same problem occured. I took it back to the shop again and I'm awaiting a repair once more. (They've had it almost three weeks again.)

It does run hot. Also, it's shy of one more digital audio input. The menu system is atrocious and the manual isn't much better. My DVR box won't send a signal to my tv via the receiver because it views the receiver as an HDMI exteneder (though I think and hope this is only an issue with the version of HDMI the DVR box is using). Also, I believe signals sent via HDMI will not be upconverted.

I bought it because it was one of or the cheapest HDMI switching and upconverting receivers on the market at the time, but clearly it isn't ready for prime time yet.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!.......2006-10-10

If you're looking for an AVR with HDMI support, this definitely could be the one you've been searching for. As others have reported this receiver runs very hot, but I've had it for well over a month and I havn't had a single issue yet. The audio quality is amazing and the upconversion of 480i video sources to 480p through HDMI is done very well. THE perfect receiver to have for using your new HD DVD player or PlayStation3 on your new display. I tip my hat to JVC for including so many great features and top quality at such an amazing price.

4 out of 5 stars Good receiver, especially for the price I paid!.......2007-05-15

I bought this receiver one year ago @ Circuit City. It was one of those "we found this sitting around in the stockroom, and it needs to be sold" deals. For $50 I got the receiver, home kit, and car kit.

In the year I have had this unit, it has worked well for me. It's been on as long as approx. 4 hours, and I haven't had issues with problems due to overheating. The unit sure does get hot, however!

I especially like the large display this unit has; makes it easy to glance over and see what's playing, without having to take my eyes off the road.

Sure, this isn't being made anymore, but if you can get a deal like I did, I would say go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Great receiver, no problems.......2005-12-24

My wife and I have 2 of these receivers. One for each of us. I have had mine for a 1 1/2 years, and my wife has had hers for a year. Neither of us have had any problems with the units losing signal even after constantly moving them between vehicles, work, and home docking stations. The sound quality is very good and the oversized displays makes them very easy to read.

4 out of 5 stars Thing is built like a Tank!.......2005-09-15

I have had this receiver almost a year and have dropped it three times on pavement and it still works! The other day it slipped out and the top actually split open, and then I heard something rattling inside. I thought for sure it would never work again but it does with no problems. I have not even replaced the remote batteries yet!

I drive truck at night and have a cradle for it in each of my personal vehicles so it gets alot of use.

The only thing I do not like is the red colored screen. It is hard to read especially at night in the dark. Would of been better to have the font black instead of light colored or the whole thing blue. It is a little large but I like the larger buttons rather than small.

5 out of 5 stars Works Great.......2005-08-22

I bought this unit almost a year ago now and haven't had any troubles with it. If it gets really hot the screen can get a little hard to read but is very sturdy to others I have seen more recently. I like that there are 3 bands with 10 stations each. Fairly user friendly. I really like it.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest gift.......2004-12-07

I got the JVC kit for my birthday in early November and I've got to say Im hooked. The music channels are great and I havent heard a commercial since receiving the unit. I've had no problem with receiption in my home or car.
My new favoriate toy.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars pure garbage.......2006-12-21

If you have ever had a surround receiver you will find this one disappointing. The surface temp of the receiver runs in excess of 120 degress. Weak sound to back speakers. Insane setup features. The owners manual gave me a headache. The decoder does a poor job of seperation!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME, but ugh.......2006-01-10

Great features, awesome sound, even with their "virtual surround back" feature when not having the back surround(s) installed.

Now my issues i had with it: If you know how to hook up a surround system, I suggest skipping the beginners crap found pages 1-18 or so. At 17 or 18 they have the set up procedures for the menus... read this. It took me an hour how to figure out how to get my dvd video input set to component, instead of composite or s-video, which is what it initially sets it as. The upconversion function is automatic, no need to pay mind to that. Next: heed any warnings for the wireless function. Mine was working for 5 minutes, then something I did screwed up the connection between the transmitter and the receiver. Just allow it to install its ops onto your PC, (not even a minute), and its great. Whenever its plugged in, the PC automatically switches audio out to the USB. MAC: just plug and play (of course... I love OSX!!), switch outputs though in the preferences the first time, and youre golden.

Overall I was pleased with it while the wireless worked. I ended up exchanging it as it was essentially defective, but rest assured, Ive found myself my home theater hub.

The other review mentioned heat issues. Yeah it got friggin hot, but a friend of mine just installed a couple of comp cooling fans in his ent. center, they work like a freakin charm. If youre afraid of overheating issues, $50-60 CompUSA for 2 fans and a power thing (not to mention hardware [screws], hole-saw, drill, and confidence not to screw up the back of the ent. center.

Great buy.

3 out of 5 stars Ventilate.......2005-09-16

This is a great receiver...but watch out, it needs to be well ventilated. Mine blew up after 31 days in an admittedly poorly ventilated entertainment center. The main problem is that the exhaust vents on the receiver are on the sides and it is a pretty wide peice of equipment so there is not a lot of room to breath in your average enclosed entertainment center. I'm also still waiting for the thing to be repaired because apparently JVC has no parts and everything is on back-order (its been 31 days since I dropped it off for repair).

I have since installed 4 exhaust fans in my entertainment center to prevent any overheating from occuring in the future. I followed the instructions on a website that amazon seems to refuse to print here so search google for "receiver cooling fans" and it is the site titled "cooling fans"

Two things to note.

1) You probably want more than 2 fans if you have a tight squeeze in your entertainment center.

2) You need to purchase a power supply tester ($10) to power the power supply without plugging it into a motherboard.

You won't be disappointed with the power and ease of use from this receiver if you keep it in good repair. It has all of the settings I ever wanted. It converts S-video and composite video signals to component if you have a component cable running out to your TV. The USB wireless tool is really cool as well. I have my computer set up with itunes on the other side of the room and I can play all of my music on my surround system without any wires running between the two.

Overall, I was very pleased with this thing while it was working...the ventilation is probably a good idea with any high powered receiver.

Among the multichannel and two-channel DAP selections are Theater, Hall, Dance Club, Live Club, and Pavilion.

Busy listeners will appreciate the RX-D212B's AV Compu Link function, which facilitates simple one-touch coordination between your JVC audio and video components. Simply pop a DVD into your JVC DVD player and the RX-D212B automatically activates the receiver and TV while switching them to the proper modes.

In addition to including a digital AM/FM tuner, the RX-D212B also accommodates both XM and Sirius satellite radio. The XM option is a bit more pocketbook-friendly, as all you need is a separately sold antenna and subscription and you're ready to go. Once you subscribe to XM, you can view all the XM channel and artist information on the RX-D212B's built-in display. By contrast, you'll need a Sirius tuner and subscription to enjoy the full array of Sirius channels, but the RX-D212B eases the transition by including a Sirius input that interacts with the unit's remote control. The Sirius input also makes it easy to scan for channels or access station information.

Components connect to the unit through its comprehensive series of inputs and outputs, including two digital audio inputs (one optical, one coaxial), four analog audio inputs, and two analog audio outputs. The RX-D212B also acts as an audio/video switcher, with up-conversion from composite to S-video or S-video to component signals. The A/V jacks include two component video inputs and one output, three S-video inputs and three outputs, and three composite inputs and three outputs.

The RX-D212B measures 17.19 by 3.62 by 14.19 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Want great music at your computer? Get this box........2007-01-19

Here's why you should buy this receiver. Do you sit at your computer a lot and long for good music? I did. First, I got what I thought was a good sound card and amplified computer speakers... but the sound was so inferior to the stereo in my living room I could not believe it. So I got this guy and it is THE perfect solution. Here's why. Obviously having music piped directly out of your computer via USB into a high quality receiver is key. I plugged the USB in, Windows XP recognized it immediately, and I had music in 15 seconds. Unbelievable. I can now start up iTunes, or run [...] (not tried Pandora yet? Do it today), and get excellent selection, excellent sound, from a full bodied amplifier. The other key to this unit is it is THIN. About 2.5 inches tall. I actually slid it under my computer monitor, right behind my keyboard, and it barely made a dent in my desk. Yet the controls are now right there in front of me where I can get at them. And the USB port is in the front and easy to reach. And finally, the unit is inexpensive. Roughly $250 and you've got a first class receiver, 110 watts per channel, all you need for superior music from your computer. So if you were thinking of getting one of those $200 boxes that pipe music to your living room from your computer, stop and think where you sit most of the day and instead, just add a powerful but cheap receiver right AT your computer, and get the music where you need it. By the way, also order a USB cable as none comes in the box. You'll want the thin at one end, fat at the other end variety (search on USB A/USB B).
