5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2007-06-14

I was initially hesitant because i've never heard of this brand before, but the cheap price and the fairly large memory storage capability drew me in. Besides, if i'm not satisfied I could always return it to Amazon.

I put it to use with my Sony Cybershot as soon as I got it in the mail and I was quite happy. I took about fifty pictures and about 10 minutes of video, and of course, I still had lots of room left. When I uploaded everything into my computer, it only took a few minutes.

With the Lexar, i'll never need to go back to my 128mb sony memory card. I'm so glad I diverged from the brand name route and bought this product, it was worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Good and Compatible with PSP.......2007-06-08

I bought this card to use with a PSP. No problem so far. It works great. I got it at good price.

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2007-02-16

The product was a steal but I think I just lucked out on the deal. The memory stick is fine. I'm using on my PSP without any issues. I've dumped movies, pics, mp3's, etc without any incident. A very nice item. A good option aside from Sony's expensive line.

Amazon.com Product Description

With the arrival of the Sony Vaio VGN-UX380N Micro PC, you'll soon think that laptops are too bulky. Placing full-size computer performance into a pocket-sized package, the UX380N weighs just over a pound and measures 5.9 by 3.75 inches to easily fit in the palm of your hand. It features a 4.5-inch widescreen SVGA screen that ingeniously slides up to expose an integrated keyboard. The pocket-sized UX380N comes equipped with a stylus and Sony's VAIO touch launcher for quick access to functions frequently used such as Internet access, e-mail, various computer applications, games and music. Just push the launcher button located on the side of the unit.

It's powered by Windows Vista Business and Intel's groundbreaking Core Solo processor with ultra-low voltage for extended battery life. Advanced wireless capabilities are built right in--including tri-mode Wi-Fi, WWAN, WLAN, and Bluetooth--and expansion is a breeze with the included port replicator. It even includes two built-in cameras--one on the front (0.3 megapixels) for VoIP tele/videoconferencing and the other (1.3 megapixels) on the back for taking snapshots. Other technical features include a 40 GB hard drive, 1 GB of RAM, a Memory Stick slot, and a full complement of pre-installed software (from Internet security to Microsoft Works). For added convenience, a docking station with three 2.0 USB ports, Ethernet, VGA, iLink (FireWire/IEEE-1394) interface and an AV output comes with the unit, making it easy to connect to peripherals like a full-sized keyboard, display and speakers when back in the office or at home.

Advanced Wireless Mobility
The UX380N features Sony's SmartWi technology, which seamlessly integrates wireless Wide Area Network (WAN), 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN and Bluetooth technologies, enabling you to toggle among your wireless connectivity options depending on your surroundings. The tri-mode wireless LAN is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). The integrated wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) technology lets you access the Cingular Wireless EDGE network to extend your wireless coverage beyond LAN access networks and hotspots (a Cingular SIM card is included; see more about WWANs below). And with the Bluetooth wireless connectivity, you can synchronize and transfer files between the PC and peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs.

Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN)
If you're the ultimate road warrior, you need to access the Internet and check e-mail without having to plug in your Sony Vaio notebook PC, and without cables to boot. Welcome to the world of WWANs (wireless wide area networks). With WWANs, you can access critical network resources and home office files from the front seat of your car, the airport, the local coffee shop, or your recliner at home. Sony Vaio computers use SmartWi technology to access the Cingular Wireless national EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) network.

A WWAN uses long-range wireless connections -- the same networks as cellular phones -- to provide access across a large geographic area. In comparison, a WLAN (wireless LAN) covers only one or more buildings located close together. The use of wireless connectivity on a WLAN is simply an alternative to the PSTN (public switched telephone network), which you may have used -- or still use -- to dial into your ISP (Internet service provider) or reach your company's network. On a WWAN, however, you use wireless connectivity to reach your carrier's data network instead of plugging into a phone jack and dialing into your ISP. Each mobile device communicates with the public carrier's base station, providing coverage across entire states, regions, and countries via cell phone towers.

Security & Safety Features
Sony's line of Vaio UX micro-PCs take security seriously, employing a biometric fingerprint sensor and proprietary hard disk drive protection software to ensure your data is protected from unauthorized use as well as accidental damage. Fingerprint biometrics is a convenient and secure way to protect your computer and the information on it with a simple swipe of your finger. It also stores passwords to secure web sites you visit, so authentication and access are quick and easy--you only need your fingerprint.

The G-Sensor shock protection feature makes your data even less vulnerable to loss or damage. When the built-in 3-D acceleration sensor detects a risky movement like being dropped, the HDD-head will lock up to secure its position and protect the disc from scratching. An intelligent algorithm, unique to VAIO PCs, judges whether or not a movement is risky, activating disk drive protection only when your hardware is at risk.

The Basics

Screen, Video & Audio
The UX380N's wide, touchscreen 4.5-inch XBRITE LCD has a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution (SVGA) and includes control buttons for zooming, scrolling, and a stick pointer, as well as the ability to view in either landscape or portrait orientations. The high brightness level of an XBRITE display means that black tones appear richer and deeper while white tones remain brighter. Graphics and text display clearly and colors appear more lifelike. This Micro PC includes a built-in monaural speaker and is compatible with the Windows sound system. Video and graphics are powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 224 MB of shared video memory.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
The UX380N has a single USB 2.0 port, headphone and microphone jacks, Memory Stick slot (compatible with Memory Stick DUO and MagicGate functionality), and a port replicator connection. The included port replicator offers three USB 2.0, FireWire, VGA out, composite A/V out, and Ethernet (10Base-T/100Base-TX) connections.

Operating System
The Windows Vista Business operating system is designed to meet the needs of business organizations of all sizes. For small businesses, Windows Vista Business will help keep PCs running smoothly and more securely so you will be less reliant on dedicated IT support. For larger organizations, Windows Vista Business provides dramatic new infrastructure improvements, enabling your IT staff to spend less time focused on the day-to-day maintenance of PCs. An array of sophisticated new backup technologies helps protect your information even in the event of a catastrophic hardware failure. And Windows Vista Business has a new user interface, named Windows Aero, which is designed to deliver new levels of efficiency for any business user. This new interface makes it easy to navigate through the operating system and from application to application. For instance, Windows Aero helps you juggle multiple tasks at once by providing a three-dimensional, real-time, animated view of all your open applications and documents.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

Preloaded Software
Includes Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office 2007 Student and Teacher Edition (60-day trial), Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007 (with 60 days of Live Update).

Dimensions and Weight
Amazingly small, the UX380N measures 5.9 x 3.75 x 1.5 inches (WxHxD) and weighs just 1.2 pounds with the included standard battery.

Power
It comes with the standard VGP-BPS6 standard capacity lithium ion battery, which provides between 2.5 and 4.5 hours of power (depending on usage). The optional large capacity VGP-BPL6 battery can power the UX380N for up to 9 hours.

What's in the Box
This package contains the VGN-UX380N, detachable stand, stylus, lithium-ion rechargeable battery, AC adapter and power cord, port replicator, Cingular SIM card, soft carrying case, and VGA/LAN adapter. It's backed by a 1-year limited warranty with 1 year of toll-free technical telephone assistance.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Clear picture tough handling.......2007-09-01

The unit is an amazing device, small light with all the latest communication features, The keyboard is not easy to use, the keys are small and embedded, so hard to reach for my big fingers, i would suggest a blue tooth add-on. The screen fonts are so small that even with my reading glasses it is straining on the eyes. The hard drive came with a 30 GB partition, the extra 10 are unaccessible (unexplainable with such a small drive. The drive also came cluttered of trial software Which took a while to remove not without some glitches thanks to vista. On the communication side it is exemplary all the latest tech is included and works well, one small problem for cingular wan, when traveling abroad you cannot use sim cards from other carrier so it is expensive to use, the device seemed locked to cingular network. Mine came without a user manual so i had to discover its workings the hard way. Blue tooth devices connected well, and the wifi worked fine. overall it is worth the price i paid for it on amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Great Machine in a small package.......2007-08-31

I have to say this is one very nice product. I just got mine 3 days ago and this machine is outstanding I love the size the screen is perfect. I use it with unbox and the videos loook great. I also own another UMPC the Asus R2H. The UX380N blows it away. I am running xp on the Asus and Vista on the Sony and it is not slow at all. I have not done a lot of heavy work on it yet but it looks like it could handle it.

The downside on the machine is the Hard drive size 40gigs is nice but I belive sony is holding onto 10gigs for system restore.

The computer is very well made the design is outstanding. If you want a micro or UMPC please look at this one the price is now right and I love it

4 out of 5 stars It is what it is.......2007-07-31

The reality about the Sony Vaio VGN-UX380N is that it is what it claims to be: an >ultra < mobile portable computer. It is not a PDA (those would be smaller but not run a full version of Windows). It is not a laptop/notebook (those would be larger and have a nearly-full-sized keyboard). It is, however, a compromise between the two. Its a chance to have a full version of Windows running on a real computer that can be carried in a small bag or purse (but not a pocket).

That being said, I purchased it to be able to remotely perform network tasks such as administering servers and routers, handle real email (and attachments), view and update spreadsheets and Word documents, and quickly surf the Internet while waiting for a plane or some other event. It does all that.

Perhaps the best thing is that it truly has all bases covered for connectivity that I would possibly use. It does Ethernet and, while the Ethernet port isn't built in, it has one on the dock and also on a small dongle so that you still have a portable computer that does Ethernet. It handles WiFi A/B/G (no N but that isn't even an accepted standard just yet). There's bluetooth and finally WWAN through Cingular/AT&T.

The biggest drawback would be not the size (you should expect a 4.5" screen to be pretty small and you can easily zoom in to make it bigger) but the keyboard. Its functional and has the primary keys available without using modifiers like shift or function (even the common symbols like \ and numbers are available with one touch). It isn't very good for touch typing. Now, a small keyboard isn't going to be any good on any computer if you want to write a term paper or create the company's 2008 budget but even tasks such as entering a web URL seem to take longer than they should due to the keyboard design. You can use the pen, however, and logins can also use your fingerprint(s) so that you don't have to re-enter common logins. This is true not just for the Window login but for logins to web sites and network shares and such (the fingerprint software tracks these and can re-enter your login/password for almost anything with the swipe of a finger).

The hard drive is small and Vista is large. I recommend that you immediately boot up the new 380N, create the recovery DVDs (2) using a USB DVD burner (I used a generic one that worked just fine) and then boot to the recovery DVD and restore the system MINUS the recovery partition. This will give you an extra 6-8 GB of disk space. Once you get back into Vista after the restore, get the properties on the C: drive and check the "use compression" box. Then wait for it to compress everything (choose "ignore all" after the first uncompressable file is found) and you'll have even more space without a noticeable performance degradation.

Quick tip: Windows Vista supports remote desktop (RDP) so if you have another PC on the network, you can RDP into this Vaio and setup and configure the unit quite easily without the pen and keyboard. You can also install a free VNC host on the unit to configure it from a Mac or PC (also networked) but you will only be able to mimic the 1024x600 screen with VNC. Still, this shows up quite nicely on a "real" monitor and makes you appreciate just how tight the pixels are on the Vaio.

Recommended as your primary computer: no, not at this time. Recommended as a portable companion to an existing desktop or notebook? Absolutely if it is truly the portability you need!

1 out of 5 stars Everything on the screen is so tiny........2007-07-29

After reading many reviews here, out of curiosity, I wend to BestBuy to get a physical feel and look. It is disappointing! Though the screen really shows sharp and clear text, everything is so tiny on that little screen after all. It strains eyes no matter old or young eyes. The screen is too small to be a laptop, and device is too bulky to be a PDA. I think this is a failure of Sony's design team.

3 out of 5 stars Too Soon to Tell.......2007-04-01

The text is sharp and clear even at the smallest size. And it has so many features built in. It seems like the perfect solution to having a PDA and a laptop. However, it will be a while before we can determine that for sure. After purchasing the VGN-UX380N my husband decided to upgrade the operating system to Vista Ultimate. After that things started going wrong and after a phone call to Sony we found out that the Ultimate operating system isn't supported because there aren't compatible drivers yet. There was nothing in the documentation to warn us about this. Since the PC doesn't come with a set of Recovery Disks and none were made before the upgrade, we purchased the set. (The upgrade destroyed the VAIO Recovery Center that was on the system initially.) Now we've found out that the only CD/DVD drive that the PC will boot from is the VGP-DDRW4 which we don't have and is rather expensive. We do have another CD/DVD drive that works great for everything else, but it will not boot to the Recovery CDs. We will get that resolved shortly and hopefully begin using the PC for it's intended purpose.

My review isn't to scare anyone away from this device. I think it's a great machine when you realize these initial shortcomings. I just want to warn others who might consider upgrading to Ultimate to hold off until Sony supports it. And, make a set of Recovery Disks as soon as you get the machine up and running.

4 out of 5 stars Very Impressive, but doesn't replace a laptop. .......2007-09-17

I have been using this machine for almost a year now. I use it in place of my desktop and have it loaded to the gills with dual monitors and tons of software, including AutoCAD. It is networked to all our other PC's and handles everything great. It is a bit slower at times, but faster than some of the other PC's on the network. The only feature I don't use is the Singular mobile internet. I tether it to my BT EDGE phone and it works pretty fast. It is a bit awkward to use as a laptop, and if I had to do it again, I would probably get a really small and powerfull laptop.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing quality, amazing price, amazing system.......2007-09-10

A friend at work had purchased one of them and after an hour of intense interrogation I was convinced that this was the system for me. When you see it's size you think "They must have dumbed something down for this" Not in the slightest, it performs better than most standard home computers to date and then some. With it's various wireless features and bluetooth functions this device is perfect for on the go network security analysis.

I recommend this device to any Techie, geek, nerd, gerd, neek, or technological freak that is looking for powerful features and extreme portability.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for those who need more then a Smartphone.......2007-09-06

I've never been happy with so-called "smartphones", especially ones that claim to "replace your notebook." So, this UMPC has been a godsend for people like me who need a full operating system without lugging around a laptop. I travel quite a bit and am rarely behind a desk, so this device is perfect for me. I've had it since March, actually, and still use it on a daily basis.

Speed is pretty much average now and this device is comparable to sub $1000 laptops on the market right now. If you're like me, this device would definitely be better suited for your needs then a laptop. But, if you are not constantly moving or have no need for a PC outside the house, you'd be better off getting a laptop for $650 that probably has more speed and definitely more memory then this device.

Now, a word of caution for those thinking of taking the plunge: I got this before Vista shipped, so Sony was nice enough to send a Vista upgrade DVD. Out of sheer curiosity, I installed Vista on a partition of the HDD. Big mistake. On XP, I was able to run about 6 apps before experiencing any slow down. On Vista, just having iTunes or Firefox open caused my machine to seize. I also have a Slingbox and sometimes like to watch TV outside of my house (like during lunch at work via Wi-Fi). On XP, I could have other apps running while using the Sling Player...no go on Vista. In fact, it is impossible to watch in full-screen mode on Vista...when in full screen, the picture stutters as if I'm watching via a 56KBPS modem. On XP, even via Wi-fi outside of my house, I have smooth running video on Sling.

Anyway, I guess that's about it. Great device.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing UMPC.......2007-08-30

The recent reviews are all dead on. This is a superb machine, with a screen that is readily visible out of doors, good battery life (3+ hours), easy to use track-point and mouse buttons, and a brilliantly realized docking station. It has everything a Windows XP computer should have, at about the size of a 4x6 index card, and less than an inch thick. It is a super toy, and yet with a bluetooth keyboard it is a fully functioning computer in every way.

I have written several thousand words of a book on mine, without straining my eyes (set the display to "margin width"). While the regular display of web pages may be too tiny for some (I can manage, but I don't need reading glasses), it has a zoom button right below the mouse-pointer. The built-in keyboard is easy to use, mostly with thumbs, but a touch typist can bring in other fingers to increase speed. Since for as little as $100 one can add a bluetooth foldable keyboard, this is one great little machine to use.

The UX280 comes with Win XP SP2, and anyone concerned by Vista should snap up one of these while they are still available (and half the price of the UX380). It works like any other computer with external drives attached - through the USB or Firewire connections on the dock - and with bluetooth, a LAN connection, and wireless networking, it is a cinch to synchronize with a desktop or other computer. All in all, this is a fabulous computer in an amazingly tiny package.

5 out of 5 stars UX280P RULES!!!!.......2007-08-25

Ever since I first heard of a product called "Tiqit" (www.Tiqit.com) I wanted to buy one ... the product never came to frutition and was never released beyond Beta Versions.

There old website is still up with "limited commercial availability in the second half of 2006" as a release date ... at a street price of $[...] I would have had to take out a loan to buy one... BUT you know what? ... I was prepared to do that .. at the time it was described as "the only computer you can use while walking"

I came across the MicroPCtalk (www.microPCtalk.com) web forums and saw everyone talking about the Sony UX / Vaio Micro PC's

I could NOT belive my eyes ... the Sony UX280-P is smaller, faster, has more features and stronger and sexier than the now unavailable Tiqit! .....

... AND best of all? .....CHEAPER by far ...

.... I got my UX280P with the full version of Windows XP -- BRAND NEW -- (not refurbished) with a full year warrantee for $[...] right here on Amazon ...have a look around www.Amazon.com especially if you are reading this in the last half of of 2007 or later you may be able to get an even better price.

I've read reviews that feel the buttons are small or hard to type but I have not found that to be a problem and I have big hands ... the trick is to just use your thumbs like typing a text message on your phone ... sure you don't want to be typing out 100 page reports .. plug in a cheap USB key board for that or an expensive Blue-Tooth key board if you have the cash .. The UX280-P will also plug into a full sized monitor or flat screen for full desk top use at desktop speed!

I am in Canada and I ordered my UX on here Amazon from Electronic Direct (www.electronicadirect.com)and they were Awsome to deal with, I often order from the US and Electronica Direct is one of the best to deal with.

A note if you are a Canadian with no experience ordering from the US you still have to pay GST and PST when the package arrives.

Also brokerage and exchange .. right now the exchange rate is almost even so it's not factor your credit card company figuers that out automaticly when you order ... it's like 5% right now and going down ... MAKE SURE to ask for your UX to be shipped by US POST then our own Canada Post delivers.

For brokerage the US Post / Canada Post combination charges peanuts like $[...] ... with the GST PST included, the total when the packaged arrived, was $[...] extra as I expected, remember if you are in business you get back the GST anyway.

As my post title reveals the UX-280P RULES!! .. It's like a Palm Top with nothing to learn ... you know XP you know the UX280P alredy!

I have attracted small crowds a number of times using it in public :) It's compact enough with the built in camera I often use it just for a camera and with a 40 GIG harddrive it would technicaly hold about 5 MILLION pictures :) people come up to me and and ask what kind of camera it is with that huge high res screen.

It's fun to use watch YouTube videos at Mcdonald's ... AND ... it's a serious business tool that has made my work SOOOO much easier in just the few weeks I've had it ... it's not just *LIKE* having your desk top computer on your hip is *IS* having your desktop computer on your hip!

For internet use the UX taps into any available WiFi and it also has a standard network/ethernet port on the docking station AND on an adaptor, the ethernet runs a bit faster than WiFi, I used it to get Microsoft updates. I also use the eathernet to load all my softweare from the CD/DVD drive on my desktop through the network, works great!

It also will piggy back on any Blue Tooth phone for internet access AND ... the US models come with a Cingular SIM CARD ... I purchased a Rogers Pay-as-you-go SIM Card and it works for internet access that way too ... A little expensive if 5 cent at a kilobyte (if you don't have a package) but it does work ... I've used it for emergency email (when I did not have my phone with me or was out of minutes) a few times and it realy saved my [...]!

I can't say enough good things about the UX-280P with it and my desktop I have no use for a common laptop anymore ... I recomend it highly!!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not demonstrative of Lexar's skill; this one's going back.......2006-07-15

Unlike most people, I am very picky about my flash memory. I have to be, because my camera is very picky in its highest-quality movie mode. Memory quality will make the difference between me being able to shoot less than a minute vs several minutes continuously.

However, I couldn't resist a local sale on this chip. My camera is designed to be able to take advantage of Lexar's proprietary "Write Acceleration Technology". (Cameras must be designed to be able to take advantage of this feature; mine was the first which could.) I thought every lexar CF card bore it. But there was no mention of WA anywhere on this box. This, despite that Amazon and some other sites list this card as featuring WA.

Well, I couldn't break one minute of continuous video recording with this chip (not that you won't be able to; depends the camera). It was about as bad as the worst card I've ever used in my camera. I even tried reformatting with different cluster sizes to no effect.

For anyone taking stills, this card should prove durable and Lexar has good support (long distance phone number) and you apparently get a real American when you email them. They actually have my model camera in their lab, and went so far as to test recording length on one of their higher-quality cards for me (they got near 5 minutes, about the best you can get, nearly matching my Microdrive), so I know their higher-quality cards can do more if you need it. This one's not the same.

Like all Lexar flash memory cards, it carries a lifetime warranty. This card is made in China. It came formatted in FAT. It also included a translucent plastic case.

It's not worth it for me to email Lexar to ask if this card really has WA technology. It also wasn't worth it for me to test the transfer speed on this thing in a card reader, sorry. If you're concerned about transfer speed to care, you shouldn't be buying this card. As for me, the sweet local sale price couldn't soften the taste of this card for me. This one's going back.

3 out of 5 stars loved it till it broke.......2007-07-30

I have had this ipod since a few months after launch. It worked very well, but recently it has become completely unusable. I have had problems with it in the past although luckily I had the hardware fix-it 2 year program with Best Buy. I usually don't buy into those gimmicks but I'm glad I did n this case. The hard drive failed and they were able to fix it. Now I have been having severe click wheel problems. For months I have had problems with the scrolling function and have to do special maneuvers with the wheel and can get it to scroll for very short periods of time. Recently the click wheel will not even click, the buttons will not function. So basically I have a shiny white box with a hard drive in it that can't be used the way it was supposed to. Sadly my extended warranty from Best Buy has expired so I cannot get it fixed. Guess I'll have to save up and buy another iPod but I will be waiting till the 6th generation comes out.

1 out of 5 stars Breaks like Clockwork means that it is Rubbish.......2007-05-15

I got mine for a Xmas present 2 years ago. Within 6 months it acted up, making me do the ridiculous R method of resetting it over and again. Itunes refuses to recognize it and now it tells me that I have a corrupted iPod--no kidding! At the moment, it is sitting on my desk like a dead bug on its back, frozen. Save yourself years of aggravation, listen to those of us who have had this for over a year...caveat emptor.

1 out of 5 stars What a Lemon!!!!.......2007-02-01

I got it new about 2 years ago. I bought it from Apple's Refurb site, and when it arrived, it showed the sad iPod icon. I took it to Apple, they said it needed a new hard drive!!!! Then the clickwheel went on it, which makes it so it won't always respond. Then the hold switch won't lock on it, and then all the problems stopped for a while. Then 5 months later, it wouldn't even turn on, and then only the backlight would show, and there was nothing on the screen. When the warranty was up, it died on that day. Now it sits in it's box on my desk. Don't buy this iPod!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Yet another 40g with recurring hard drive problems.......2007-01-29

I was lucky enough to have an HP service contract that extends the warranty for 90 days after repair. My iPod 40g has failed for the 8th time in less than 2 years or like clock-work about every 90 days. Always the same "Sad Face" icon that will not respond to any of the simple procedures that Apple or HP propose to remedy the problem.

I cannot understand why Apple has not instituted at least a trade-in program for this ultimate lemon. A recent survey showed that it failed at 10x the rate of the newer models. For me, I am not sure that I will ever buy an Apple product again regardless of a trade-in.

I really have never understood the cult of Apple. It is no more reliable a product or more intuitive a product than anyone else. It is all Steve's PR.

1 out of 5 stars Arrived broken, what a pathetic piece of hardware........2007-01-24

It arrived broken. Getting it replaced by apple has already taken a week and a half, and they don't plan to get it to me until another week from now. So now I'm having to wait almost a month before I get the stupid thing, and god knows if it'll even work then.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome sound!!.......2007-06-12

This little thing ROCKS!!! I just got it today and I am already in LOVE with it! Clear crisp sound, no problems here! I was somewhat concerned after reading some of the other reviews, but not anymore. This is a great little system for the money!

4 out of 5 stars Instuctions please?.......2007-05-29

I was very dissappointed with the fact that i did not receive instructions for this complex system, i am still trying to figure out how to set the clock!! But to say a few other things about it; the cd and ipod plays well. As for starting up the radio, it's a joke. The antenna is just a string with nothing else to hold it up for a good reception so the radio is always fuzzy. The LCD screen i wish would turn off when you turn off the rest of the system, it is rather bright when trying to sleep. But i am glad to say that i do not have any hissing or beeping with me stereo.

sound is really good At first I thought about buying a buffer but you don't really need it

The remote has a narrow angle (that's another minus )

1 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor - Buyer Beware.......2007-06-01

Please Don't buy this product unless you plan on working pro bono as a tech for yourself on behalf of creative. The Player will eventually freeze up and attempts to fix officially using creative updated "play for sure" firmware software will "destroy your player for sure". Simple. I just wish i had read a little about this before attempting to upgrade the software and i might have salvaged what little was left of the player. The good reviews are simply from people who just haven't heard trouble with their products, It's not a question of if but when. You've been warned.

2 out of 5 stars Dead after 1 year 5 months.......2007-05-29

My wife & I bought two of these for Christmas in 2005 and loved them (our first MP3 players). Mine died 5-28-07 (5 mos out of warranty) and Creative's attitude is "so sorry, too bad, pay us for service, including online support or just fix it yourself." Read the postings on the Creative forum before you buy ANY of their products - CAVEAT EMPTOR. They have posted a firmware "upgrade" that frequently destroys the player. Woe be to the owner who hasn't backed up his ripped files. I have, and am shopping for another player, but it won't be made by Creative, I guarantee. We still own 2 Zen MicroPhotos (8 GB) and her Zen Xtra still works, who knows for how long? BTW, Creative's software is junk; you would be much better served to buy Notmad Explorer.

5 out of 5 stars A Reliable Product from a stellar company.......2007-02-10

To begin with, I really do not recommend that anyone buy this product now (unless you can get it really cheap) because there have been so many advances since this came out. I have had mine for almost two years with absolutely no problems. I love this player. Around the time I bought it I could get the most memory for it for the lowest price. Yeah it was bigger and not as sleek, but it was definitely the right decision. In general I feel that Creative as a company is superior. All their products are well priced and of high quality. So if you are going to buy an MP3 player go with Creative over Apple. The Zen Vision M is cheaper and better overall. Just go to c/net to look at the reviews. While the 5th gen iPod scored slightly higher (.3 of a point)on the site review, the user satisfactory rating for the Zen Vision M was nearly 2 points higher. Take your advice from the owners. Creative does not disappoint. And while Apple may be the giant, I feel that unless you want to conform to society go ahead, but Creative provides unique and better choices.

1 out of 5 stars bought it liked it, but trashed it.......2007-01-24

i bought this along time ago and had it a good while, but one day it fell in the toilet yes i know, it was in my pocket and fell out and boom short circut but it was awsome lol.

1 out of 5 stars Newest Firmware Upgrade Destroys Player.......2006-12-28

It's that simple. The newest firmware upgrade for this player halts mid-install, not completely installing. The player will not start, Windows will recognize the player, but because there is not a complete set of firmware on the player, Creative's own software will not recognize it (thus not allowing me to run another firmware upgrade on the player). Do not buy this product.

By the way, I'm not alone with my complaint. The creative forums are plagued with complaints of this.

5 out of 5 stars WD 40GB/7200 RPM EIDE HARD DRIVE.......2007-07-17

It is becoming hard to find a modest-size new hard drive having good performance properties. This drive fit the bill in all respects.

5 out of 5 stars worked as descried.......2007-05-07

The drive was sold at a good price and was very easy to install and worked as described. What more can I say, it's an internal hard drive for a desktop PC. The price was good and the drive worked and installed easily.

4 out of 5 stars Mine is Fine.......2007-03-09

I got it with my Dell computer when I purchased in 2000, it did have to be replaced in 2002 but the new one has been running fine, I did have to get a new one to use it as a back up. Two draw backs are the size because the new software takes up so much space and also if you buy this one, the software cd is not included and you have to downloaded it from Western Digital. If your computer can handle bigger drives defintely go for it, if not this not a bad option especially for extra space.

2 out of 5 stars Mine Crashed.......2006-12-09

Mine is less than two years old. Will not boot, unable to recover data, it just clicks. I was going to buy another one until I read the feedback on this product.

1 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere........2006-07-10

The positives first - it's cheap for a 40-gig drive.

This drive kept me going for three years with intermittent weirdness. Once in a while it would simply 'disappear', i.e., the PC wouldn't find it. A power cycle usually fixed the problem. It was later mounted in an external casing, and exhibited the same erratic behaviour. The problem was that this misbehaviour was not repeatable. It would happen at random, once a month. WD servicing could not repeat this problem, and it was returned to me.

It's just a month after the warranty expired. Yesterday it was totally dead, without a warning. There were no signs of failure, no data corruptionor loss, no misbehaviour, nothing. The drive powers on and after 1-2 minutes, it can be seen in the XP device manager, but it's not seen in the disk management tools. Any attempt to resecue it using Knoppix or UBCD failed. I even tried mounting it in an external USB2 casing, but that too was a failure.

This is the second WD disk going belly up on me this year, and the last WD I'll buy. The Seagate and Hitachi's I've been using have been reliable so far.

Amazon.com Product Description

Images and music combine in this easy-to-use portable digital audio player. Toshiba's snazzy, silver Gigabeat MEG-F40S packs a 1.8-inch Toshiba hard drive capable of holding an incredible 40 GB of digital media: MP3 and WMA compressed audio and even uncompressed, full-resolution WAV files. That's about 10,000 songs (more than 600 complete albums) at 128 kbps MP3, a crazy 20,000 songs at 64 kbps WMA, and a still-impressive 1,100 songs or 75 hours of CD-resolution WAV files.

A major feature of the player is its bright, crystal-clear, 2.2-inch LCD with 240 x 320 resolution and the ability to render over 65,000 colors. It's there so you can experience the visual as well as the aural component of your entertainment. The Gigabeat lets you download and view album covers, search for your favorite tracks by scrolling through those album covers, or even set a favorite album cover as your background image. You can download any digital still picture from your PC and create custom slideshows, too--and set them to music.

Gigabeat may be versatile, but it's also easy to operate. Its PlusTouch sensor control lets you scroll through its intuitive menus using only a soft touch or pass of your fingertip.

The PC-only Gigabeat is "Plays for Sure"-certified by Microsoft, which means that it will operate with any "Plays for Sure" download site or management software when connected to your PC. Gigabeat is automatically recognized by Windows Media Player 10, so there's no need to install new drivers of any kind. Toshiba has also partnered with Napster to provide Napster's "Napster To Go" software, giving you the option of using Napster To Go, Windows Media Player, and/or the supplied Gigabeat Room management software (Gigabeat Room is required for transfer of photo images).

So what about your CD collection? After all, you'll likely be able to stash the entire thing in here, one way or another. Thanks to a unique feature called CD RipRec, all you have to do is place a CD in your PC and press the CD RipRec button while the Gigabeat is docked in its cradle. CD RipRec will launch the software and transfer compressed audio to your Gigabeat quickly and with no further effort on your part. Using a USB 2.0 connection (cable supplied), CD RipRec can transfer the contents of an entire CD to the Gigabeat in as little as 5 minutes.

If Gigabeat's battery life (up to 16 hours) isn't enough to satisfy your entertainment needs, fret not. Rather than carrying your AC adapter everywhere, simply connect the Gigabeat to any PC with a USB cable and the battery will charge itself again.

Other features include headphones with an integrated wired remote control, a choice of 10- or 60-second intro scan to help you find a desired song, multilingual support (Japanese, English, French, Chinese, Spanish, and German), and 28 user selectable equalizer settings, and SRS WOW, which simulates surround sound from any two speakers (including headphones).

What's in the Box
Digital music player, an AC power adapter, a power-supply, a docking cradle, a USB cable, headphones with integrated remote control, a software CD-ROM (Gigabeat Room management software, CD RipRec, Napster To Go), a user's manual, and warranty information.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good player for the money.......2007-07-27

I wanted a nicely priced mp3 player to hook up to the stereo for my business. I have been very happy with the Toshiba Gigabeat. The buttons are easy to maneuver, which is important because different staff use it. When I want to update the playlist I play during business hours, I just bring it home, connect it to my rather slow and dated computer, select the files I want to transfer to the Gigabeat, and then wait awhile. Once I figured out the best way to transfer files via Windows Media Player, transferring files became a snap. I bought a cable to hook up to my stereo receiver, so simple for a non-techie like myself.

If you just need this for music, this is a good capacity mp3 player for the price. I've never had problems with it freezing or malfunctioning. The buttons sometimes seem to either not respond or are very "touchy", but usually they are easy to maneuver. The 40GB capacity is more than ample for my needs, but there are larger capacity models as well. I bought a silicone case for it which is nice because it gets bumped around a lot at work. I also have an FM transmitter in the car which works great with it when we take a rare vacation.

1 out of 5 stars Nope.......2007-07-10

I bought the 60GB version of this MP3 player multiple years ago. and i never use it. why? the interfacing is ridiculous. you cannot easily make playlists on the fly. it is frustrating to get to the music you want to, and half the time i end up settling for some band in the A's or B's, because getting to the L's or T's is such a pain. Another huge annoyance is that artists names such as "the Pietasters" all show up under the T's. I would just turn it into a large equivalent of the Ipod Shuffle (and just have 4 or 5 star songs on it), if getting the Gigabeat to work properly with the computer weren't such a pain.

Previous to this MP3 player i had a 40GB Creative that i used obsessively. I miss it terribly.

4 out of 5 stars Good Mp3 player, still not an Ipod Killer.........2007-06-27

the device is good, great building and long battery, plus the space 40 GB

CONS:

- The menu is not very practical, difficult to learn and slow
- It encrypts the song so if you have music on the player and take it to your office PC wont play the music there, very tricky
- the device it self is thick

PROS:
-40 GB, the price and battery life is too good and you can hack the software with some firmware updates, that will void you warranty but will fix a lot of issues, plus more apps and options. ( I havent try just for the records)

1 out of 5 stars 1 Stars as is, 5 stars with a little tweaking.......2007-06-18

STORAGE:
This is one of two primary reasons to purchase this product; you simply cannot get the same storage for the same price anywhere.

COLOUR SCREEN:
This would be the other reason to buy this product. The screen size is amazing for a unit of this overall size.

FIRMARE:
To get the most out of the excellent hardware, you will have to ditch the Tobishia firmware, which is the source of everything wrong with this product. If you don't mind using the cumbersome Gigabeat Room software, having your mp3s encrypted, having no organisation of photos, and having no ability to view video on this fantastic screen, then you shouldn't have a problem. If this would frustrate you--and you are even a little computer savy--then replace the Tobishia firmware with a certain FREE open source firmware (simply google search) and this product will leap into full utilisation of the fantastic hardware.

4 out of 5 stars Good Solid MP3 Player.......2007-06-14

Toshiba products are built like tanks, and are virtually unbreakable. This item is a little heavy as these things go, but you don't have to worry about it breaking down. Pretty cheap for a 40 GB player, too. Has a nice in line control for volume and track advance, too. I run it directly into apmlifiers in 2 classic cars, and makes for good portable toons without adding modern radios in the dash.
