Amazon.com Review

Kicking the technology advances up another notch, the Palm Tungsten T3 delivers a professional, sleek alternative to bulkier Pocket PCs that's chock-full of productivity enhancing and information sharing applications. Improvements over the T2 include a full-screen mode when the bottom casing is slid open, a bevy of enhanced display options, compatibility with Java applets, larger internal memory, and an easier to access status bar.

First, just the technical facts:

The T3's Stretch Display
Overall, the Tungsten T3 isn't that much smaller than the Zire 71, but it does feel nicely compact in the hand and its larger navigation button is easier to manipulate with just your thumb. However, the "wow factor" comes into full force when you slide down the bottom of the T3's case to reveal the full screen mode. And it gets even better. The standard "silkscreened" Graffiti input area (so-called because its icons and borders are printed onto the screen's glass) is now replaced by a digital version, which can be hidden to reveal an even larger screen. We found this useful when writing long notes in Memos and viewing an expanded daily calendar view. You don't actually need the Graffiti writing area to input data into notes or Calendar items. With the Full-Screen Writing preference turned on, you can write Graffiti characters anywhere on the screen (you'll even see an outline traced on the screen as you write). But the crowning display enhancement is the ability to rotate the screen to landscape view, which was especially handy when viewing downloaded movie trailers (using the included Kinoma video player). If you're left-handed, you can change the orientation in landscape view so that the status bar and Graffiti input area are more accessible to your own orientation.

The T3 includes the familiar suite of Palm applications (Calendar, Contacts, Memos, and Tasks) as well as a number of third-party software title (ranging from Acrobat Reader to RealOne Player for listening to digital audio). Calendar has been given an Outlook-friendly makeover, adding an Agenda view that consolidates all of today's appointments, tasks, and new e-mails. With full-screen mode on, Calendar's month view now displays smaller calendars for the previous and next months.

Bluetooth wireless functionality is built in, and the Tungsten T3 still includes the BlueBoard and BlueChat for sharing information with other Tungsten users. For Web communication, Palm includes VersaMail and WebBrowser Pro, both of which can be used along with a Bluetooth phone. Additionally, VersaMail can access a corporate e-mail account, including Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino servers.

Java has also now entered the Palm OS arena, expanding the application development opportunities. The T3 comes with a few sample applets (including a periodic table that would be handy at our local pub's trivia night), but we'll have to wait for more development before Java becomes a full Palm OS tool.

Our only complaint, design-wise, is the placement of the Voice Memo button, which as been placed toward the top of the left side of the case, below the on/off button on the top panel. When turning on the device, our left hand's thumb continually triggered the Voice Memo app when attempting to turn on the T3. Note that you can also turn the T3 on by pressing one of the application buttons surrounding the Navigator, or by sliding the bottom case open. Overall, the Tungsten T3 is a Palm powerhouse, blending its traditional information management strength with new multimedia and connectivity functionality (both wired and wireless). It's about as perfect a personal productivity agent for professional settings as it gets. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

4 out of 5 stars Its getting dated.. but sure does the job.......2007-05-14

One of the reason I do not let goi ts voice recording capability.. I can live without the wi-fi, but not without the voice recording.

I see that this recording feature does not come in the recient models and that is a shame.. also, this device can accomodate for a camera add-on which is imposible to find.. so, yes it has its limitations but is more faithful tha Lassie

4 out of 5 stars Awesome PDA!.......2007-04-28

I just love this PDA. It's the only fast model from PAlm to feature voice recorder, which is fundamental for me cause I tape my classes at the uni. The mic is just good enough for that and voice memos.
The palm is fast enough to be able to play crystal-clear mp3s and also movies (if you care to recompress and watch it a tiny screen).
I also bought a GPS for less than 90 U$S and now mount the PDA in my car for GPS navigation. I just saved $200~400 on a GPS! :D
You can also load it with games and lots of interesting software, and the accessories are inexpensive to boot.
The only things that I don't like are:
Collapsible design (seems floppy)
Screen brightness (can't see much in direct sunlight)
Battery autonomy (not enough)

Luckily you can remedy the battery thing by buying a car adapter and/or the Power-To-Go, a sleek external battery that works like a charm :D

If you see one of these cheap, grab it!

All,

This it the more reliable PDA I've ever owned and I've owned many starting with a Pilot. I've owned everything from HP iPAQs and Jornada 728s and this is the one I kept, while selling the rest. 'Nuff said!

My Tungsten T# just died. It is in a forzen state. It will not reboot or even turn off. It is just over a year old and I am now looking for a new PDA.

1 out of 5 stars Palm T3 disaster.......2006-01-23

I was about to write my miserable experience in agonizing detail, until I found that others have traveled the same path. It is a pity that a product that has come so far was (in my case, also) mercilessly deserted by its maker in the clinches - in this case a hotsync failure that eventually destroyed not only the data stored in the handheld but also the backups of those data that were religiously placed on the "official"
Secure File PDA Backkup SD card. I am now laboriously retrieving my "essential" passwords (and from now forward keeping copies on the old reliable - PAPER!) It may interest others that I tried the path of logging my problem with an internet chat-group hosted by Google that is focussed on T3 hotsync problems, where I found lots of company, but no answers after waiting several weeks. The best information I have found by far is that in the group in which I am now participating. What a pity! I do not have a beef with the product - even a Rolls has been known to miss a beat occasionally. I do have a serious beef with the maker. But, heck - even GM can screw up, so why not Palm? Where do I go from here? My T3 makes a rather mediocre paper-weight.

1 out of 5 stars Awful case, AVOID.......2007-02-13

I bought this case on Ebay at .99 + shipping... it costed more or less 5.50 altogether. Anyways, the case is very bad, it DOESN'T HAVE A BELT CLIP, and it's bulky. Even at 5.50, I wouldn't recommend it!

1 out of 5 stars terrible.......2006-04-06

did they actually put the pda in the case when they designed it? terrible! continously falling out. i'm not really fussed about all theresulting scratches my T3 now has, more about the fact that some idiot designer probably got paid to design it!

1 out of 5 stars Palm T3 has to be the worst palm case ever made...........2005-02-13

I have been working professionally supporting palms for years and familiar with several models and their cases. This is my 6th palm that I have purchased, but this has to be one of the poorest cases designed for this particular device. They should have put a rubber grip inside the case. Half the time when I extend the screen - it pops out of the case. I have dropped the palm numerous times when just holding the case because the 2 small hooks holding the palm in does not lock it securely. This case gives you little security in protecting this device...

1 out of 5 stars as protective as wrapping your Palm in a sheet of paper.......2004-12-21

PERSPECTIVE: Active Palm owner and user

I would think that a company that makes such useful, expensive, and easily breakable gadgets as Palm does would market a case that would offer significant protection in addition to functionality. Apparently, my thinking is wrong.

I won't wait until the punchline - don't buy this case. It is flimsily constructed, and offers little in the way of actual protection. For example, the first day after purchase, I had my T3 and case in my coat pocket, along with a plastic pen, and I leaned casually against a wall - later, when I pulled out my Palm to use it, I noted that the front cover was bent in half around a pen-shaped indentation! My Palm was uninjured, and I was able to bend the case back into shape with relative ease. Read that again - I was able to bend the case back into shape with relative ease. That's bad.

Needless to say, a few weeks later, I was walking through a crowd, Palm in pocket, and was jostled into a counter. I pulled out my Palm, and noted with horror that the case cover was crumpled, and that my precious screen was cracked and useless.

As to functionality, it has 2 relatively foolproof expansion card slots in the inside front cover. The top the case is open, to allow better card and beaming access. The T3 actually clips into the case by hooking into 2 slots in the back of the Palm itself, which initially seems nifty... until I discovered that even small bumps to the case can cause the gadget to be "unhooked" without one being aware of it. Thus, if the case is tilted, out slides the Palm through the open top, to a fall that may result in a fatal injury to your $3-400 machine.

FINAL WORD: Avoid like the plague. Get the Rhinoskin T3 case instead, which is well-made and less expensive.

2 out of 5 stars not so bad..........2004-10-18

I had bought hard cases for my previously owned Palms (V and 500) because without one, they were always getting accidentally turned on in my purse, draining the battery. Palm T3 doesn't have that problem because of the placement of the on/off switch. I didn't have a problem with the T3 coming loose from the case, and found it functional - just bulky, a bit heavy and not needed. I'm far happier with a slim leather case that also holds my credit card and 2 expansion cards. But if you are looking for a hard case specifically, I don't think this one is so bad.

                  Product Description

The KiSS DP-1504 DVD player is based on the Slim Line DivX Compatible DVD Player KiSS DP-1500 with its built-in Ethernet Port and its PC Card Slot. These features enable the player, if connected to a Broadband Internet Connection, to read Audio/Video/Picture content straight from a PC with the KiSS PC-Link Software as well as playing Internet Radio Stations with WebRadio. WebRadio, with its friendly interface provides the user with a several thousands radio stations to choose from. The PC Card Slot placed at the back of the player, also adds a new feature: Wireless Connection. No more Ethernet cables in the way, thanks to a simple setup on the player. Having a hard Disk on the player enables the user to store Audio/Video/Picture content on the DVD Player. The KiSS DP-1504 player also comes complete with the standard CD/MP3, Ogg Vorbis, DivX, XviD, Jpeg, CD-RW and DVD+-RW playback.

                  Amazon.com Product Description

The DP-1504 from KiSS not only integrates your broadband Internet service with your home theater, it also houses its very own 40 GB hard drive so you can keep your most critical media files--from music to pictures to full-motion video--right at your fingertips, whether you're at your computer or relaxing in your living room at day's end.

The stylish, compact player spins DVD-Videos and music CDs, including MP3 CDs. Its Ethernet cable jack and PC Card slot--together with the supplied wireless Local Area Network (LAN) card--make it easy to hook the player up to your wireless home network to stream music, digital photos, and even DivX and MPEG-4 movies right from your computer. The DP-1504 offers upgradeable firmware, too, so you can keep the player up-to-date through updates from the KiSS Web site.

The player's sizeable hard disk holds up to 58 Internet-sourced DivX films (including DivX 3.11, 4, and 5), or somewhere on the order of 8,000 128 kbps MP3 music files, or about 100,000 JPEG image files. All these files are easily accessible through a user-friendly list displayed on the TV screen. You can even use the Ethernet connection to ferry your media between your PC and the DP-1504.

Format compatibility--whether you're playing off a DVD, recordable CD, your PC, or the player's hard-disk drive (HDD), extends from DVD-Video to MP3, Ogg Vorbis (an open-source version of MP3), JPEG files, DivX, XviD, and DVD+R/+RW, and DVD-R/-RW. DivX files have the potential to look and sound much like what you see and hear from your DVDs.

MP3 features include full file name display using the onscreen menu and ID3 tag details for the currently playing track (when encoded). You can navigate through a disc's folders while a track is playing.

Media management between your PC and the DVD player occurs via the supplied KiSS PC-Link software (Windows 98 and up), which allows the DP-1504 to "see" your music, pictures, and motion-video files. It sees only the files you show it, and you can run the program on multiple PCs simultaneously. You can also listen to Internet radio through the player's WebRadio feature, though you can only access WebRadio when the player is connected to a broadband Internet client. For direct results, feed a Cat-5 cable from your modem right into the player.

If you're using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), the player ought to be able to lock to your IP address automatically. Alternately, you can use the manual setting, which requires knowledge of fairly intimate PC operations such as checking the PC's static IP address and making sure the PC's port number 8000 is not in use and is accessible from behind your Windows and/or third-party firewall. You can always use Cat-5 Ethernet cables, of course, between your PC and your router, between the router and the DVD player, or even directly between your computer and the DVD player.

The player uses the French-developed SCART connection for its high-res progressive-scan component-video signal, and a supplied cable provides an interface for use with the standard RCA-tipped jacks on associated equipment. The SCART output allows the player to channel video signals in a manner consonant with RGB computer monitors (RGB adapter cable not included).

Other outputs include standard composite- and S-video connections and one each coaxial and optical digital-audio jacks for passing Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround signals to a compatible audio/video receiver.

                  What's in the Box
DVD player, a ZyAIR B-120 wireless LAN PC card, a remote control, 2 AAA batteries, a composite-video interconnect, a stereo analog audio interconnect, a SCART-to-RCA component-video adapter cable, a CD-ROM (PC Link software), user's manuals (English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dansk, Portuguese, and Nederlands), an AC power cord, and an EU AC power cord.
