5 out of 5 stars Great product .......2007-08-23

The adapter worked first time right out of the box. No problems connecting with my Belkin Pre-N router. Worked with Vista!

1 out of 5 stars sound .......2007-05-17

like one of the other reviewers stated.. I too have had this item screw up my sound. i cant listen to music with out it studdering... shame on you netgear!!!

3 out of 5 stars fast wireless .......2007-05-09

this is a usb type wireless adapter. it works with the n type of router. i did see a significant change in speed even with my netgear etreme rangemax router. dodnt have a mimo router yet.
however the area of coverage is no better thn any other basic adapter.
if you have a desk top then you can get a wireless card for about 20 bucks. these cards have the same area of connectivity. no change when i compared mine.
yes the speed is better.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT PURCHASE!.......2007-04-28

This USB adapter will cause your sound card to stutter in a horrible manner. Many users on the netgear forum are reporting this issue and NETGEAR is not fixing this problem.

This is not a problem with XP/Vista IRQ conflicts (I went through the process of verifying this myself, which requires me to re-install XP to get my hyper threading support back). This is 100% a NETGEAR issue.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect addition to an existing computer.......2007-04-08

I purchased this for my server while I was moving it to a location in the house that didn't already have a internet port. It has worked extremely reliably... Currently I am using it in conjunction with a 802.11g router... but my next purchase will be an -n to complete the system!

1 out of 5 stars BAD PRODUCT.......2007-08-04

I bought the Netgear RangeMax router and the RangeMax USB adapter for a desktop on the second floor. The connection signal is constantly dropping. When I finally get some signal, it is always at "very low". Netgear claims that the range coverage is up to 500,000 feet. I have a 1000 square feet house; the signal is at "very low".

The tech support is NOT helpful at all. After days of frustration, I am giving up. I will never buy Netgear product again. I would give it NEGATIVE FIVE STAR if I can on Amazon web site.

Oh yeah, short Netgear stock!!! With crappy products like these, its shares go down further.

2 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2007-06-16

I purchased 3 of these adapters for different users. Each user had constant connection problems. Since I wasn't sure at first if the problem was the adapter or the router, I replaced one of the adapters with an internal PCI wireless ethernet card. The connection problems went away for that user.

In addition to really lousy connections, the adapter overheats. It gets so hot, you can hardly touch it. This strikes me as a fire hazard.

Avoid it, if you can.

1 out of 5 stars avoid avoid avoid.......2007-06-01

If you are running Windows XP SP 2, RESEARCH PROBLEMS BEFORE YOU BUY! This thing freezes up my system after about 5 minutes and causes me to have to reboot! This is a common problem as I sadly discovered through Google searches. Downloading the latest driver did not solve the problem. I then called technical support. They had me reinstall the latest driver (again, just like I did last night.) Well, is STILL freezes. His next piece of advice: try it on a different computer. Where am I supposed to get "another computer"? I have one, but it's a Mac!! How would that help me in solving a problem on a machine running Windows? OK, his next and final piece of advice is to run a cable to the router. If I could run a cable through my cinderblock walls (and if I had a long enough one), why on earth would I be buying a wireless adapter? When I said I would return it and get a different product, the tech support guy was practically begging me to let him research it further and then he would call me back in an hour. He would not let me hang up! This was after we were already on the phone for an hour. Uh, buddy, last I checked I was not on the Netgear payroll.

4 out of 5 stars Good USB Wireless Connector.......2007-05-20

This works very well with my Netgear Rangemax wireless router. I replaced an older D-Link Wireless Router and find I get better results by staying with the same brand for both sending and receiving signals. Of course, like all wireless devices you have to try many positions to reach over 80 feet. I will eventually switch to the newer "N" equipment once it has been available of a couple of years.

3 out of 5 stars Overheating.......2007-05-10

It's not reliable. Although it does extend for a fair range, and I've maxed out my DSL at 320 kb/s, it tends to overheat and cut the connection. I've even tried juryrigged cooling, but I suspect it's insulated inside so it's kind of in a pressure cooker.

I'm not going to buy another Netgear adapter after this. Seems like poor design.

1 out of 5 stars Orphaned.......2007-05-07

This adapter (WPNT121) has good range and great speed when mated to its companion, the WPNT834 wireless router, but Netgear has COMPLETELY AND DISGRACEFULLY abandoned support for these products -- less than one and a half years from their initial announcements. As the Netgear website tartly puts it "WPNT834 has been discontinued, no updates planned", and "WPNT121 has been discontinued, no updates planned".

What this means in particular is that there is no compatibilty update for Windows Vista. You can get it to work with Vista (but not - so far as I can tell - using WAP) only unsecured or using WEP; which, given that WEP can be broken in under a minute, might as well be unsecured.

The original press release for these products was dated November 7, 2005. I don't know the exact date that they were "discontinued", but they were already discontinued by January 2007 - 14 months later. Yet, the channel continues to have "new" stock in it. You can buy it new right here on Amazon today (5/6/2007).

Netgear should correct this situation immediately, there is no excuse for abandoning customers this quickly. And, by the way, since when did discontinuing a product mean that you no longer support it -- especially in the case of mass breakage beyond the customer's control.

What's especially galling is that it was certainly not a secret that Vista was coming in November 2005. The product should have been shipped with the expectation of providing Vista support.

5 out of 5 stars A must for the Rangemax 240 router........2006-11-05

I ended up with the Rangemax 240 router and this product (Rangemax 240 USB Adapter) This adapter is directional so aim it towards the router for better performance. The performance I get is between 140 - 240 MBps, at 35 feet and three walls. Dont use the CD to install the driver. Goto the Netgear site and get the latest driver to install. [...]

Also from Netgears website: If your computer does not have a USB 2.0 port but rather a USB 1.1 type port, the 121 will be limited to the maximum speed of the USB 1.1 port. USB 1.1 port maximum speed is 14 Mbps whereas the maximum speed of a USB 2.0 port is 480 Mbps. PC computers can be upgraded with optional add-on USB 2.0 adapters that provide one or more USB 2.0 ports.

Good Luck. Awesome product to me.

4 out of 5 stars look before you trash talk.......2004-09-26

I just want to point out that the reviewer who goes on and on, and on, about issues that all sound like driver and bus compability problems and blames these drives for everything short of killing their first-born son, casually mentions near the end that they're using Windows 98. The specs for the drive clearly state that Windows compatability requires Windows 2000 or XP.

                1 out of 5 stars Trash........2004-08-03

2 of these drives dead on arrival. Other reviewers are 100% correct--the reliability on these drives is close to nothing.

Don't buy if you value your data.

1 out of 5 stars The biggest mistake I ever made.......2004-07-23

I bought two of these disks, though I never intended to, and both have been a disaster. I bought one with a view to storing my mp3, videos and photos on it. As a cautionary measure I only moved my mp3 files onto the new drive, thinking that if it failed, at least I could re-rip them again. Guess what - that's what I'm now having to do.

Forist, In order to avoid this time consuming step though, I bought a second disk and some recovery software. For a few days everything was ok, but then the second disk corrupted my data too! Now I am re-ripping my entire collection and sending these disks back.

Here are the problems that both the disks have exhibited:
                1) when saving data I would get a "blue screen" saying there was a "data write error".
                2) Upon lacie's advice I bought a Lacie firewire card to fix the above problem - it didn't.
                3) It is almost impossible to get my PCs to "see" the drives whether they are connected by firewire or USB. I.e. you have to plug them in/out/in/out/in/out and it seems to be just chance if the PC can detect them. Some days this never works.
                4) Both drives appear to have caused corruption to my data.
                5) The drives are different sizes - one reports 320Gb one reports 298Gb
                6) The USB driver fails to install on windows 98
                7) One drive refuses to have its firmware updated.

All in all these drives have wasted weeks of my life, and as a knock-on effect (due to the problems they cause and the crashes they caused on my PC) have resulted in my buying a Lacie firewire card, a NEW DISK for INSIDE my PC (because they caused my PC to crash and fatally damage the drive inside my PC), to buy data recovery software, and to irretrievably lose some precious photographs that were on my PC (i.e. not on the Lacie drives!)

I'm afraid this is absolutely the worst technology purchase I have ever made.

2 out of 5 stars Duct tape required.......2004-05-28

The designers of this disk are to be commended for making the case almost exactly the same color as duct tape -- because that's all that's currently holding mine together.

My disk arrived only partially assembled: the front panel was not attached, and the only way to attach it properly would have been to completely disassemble the rest of the drive to get at the screws hidden behind that panel. I settled for a jury-rigged compromise which has the front panel only loosely attached by a single screw and the above-mentioned duct tape -- but even getting that far required breaking the warranty seal.

All I can figure is that whoever assembled it at the factory did it in the wrong order, hit a dead end, and decided to just stuff the extra parts in the box rather than start over... but you'd expect someone in quality control should've noticed that the drive was still in pieces.

At the end of the day the drive seems to be working acceptably -- but my warranty is now void, of course, so if anything goes wrong I'm out of luck. Not an ideal situation.

1 out of 5 stars Drive had catastrophic failure after 10 days.......2004-03-12

I purchased this drive new and spent the next 10 days transferring large amounts of data to the drive. Five hours after completing this transfer the drive failed. This failure was caused by a hardware issue not a software issue.

Upon contacting LaCie about the problem their response was "all hard drives are destined to fail". That is true but I expected it to last longer than ten days.

LaCie didn't seem to understand that the issue was not about the warranty but customer service. I have always been a loyal to the LaCie brand but I will not accept the excuse that "all hard drives are destined to fail".
