A real puzzle.......2007-08-24
I bought this interface to record my Yamaha Drum DTXpress III on my PC (Windows XP) using Magix Music Maker and Quartz Audio Master. I have to follow instruction of one of the reviewer here (Araki) to install the UNO correctly. But, then I was not able to record myself using the two software specify above. So I spent time reading their Help Guide and do google search in an attempt to understand MIDI, sequencer, etc. I download Midi-ox to see if commands was sent when i hit a drum trigger. Midi-ox confirm that USB uno is working. But... why the software didn't recieve the commands (no MIDI notes appears on the editor screen and the volume gauge stay at zero). It did one week that i got the UNO and i'm still not able to use it well. Maybe i'm dumb! For all this trooble, if i had know... i had not purchase it.

I writing this review because I saw that someone wrote that this thing won't work if you have a Yamaha keyboard. Wrong. I have a cheapy Yamaha keyboard and it works perfectly with this. I also have a GI-10 Midi guitar interface and JV-1010, JV-1080 and a GR-30 Roland synthesizers. It works perfectly with all these with no time lag. I could not get this device to work at all however, until I installed the Asio For All Driver, which wasn't too big a deal since it is free. While USB connections may not be the most ideal for pro Midi, this is as good as it gets for a USB Midi interface!

What a difference!!!.......2007-08-31
I have been using on-board sound from my laptop for a long time without thinking about sound card because I think it's still useful and producing good sound. However, I just want to try something new like external sound card that is less than 100 bucks. When I just use crystalizer, I am totally surprised about the sound quality. What a difference!! Only using headphones that come with the package is still good. When I use my PortaPro, oh my god, the sound is quite great for me. It's really easy to setup. I just plug it and Windows XP can find it automatically. Then you just change audio device to Xmod and that's it and ready to rock. In my opinion, the sound range is quite wider than it used to be. It means I can hear some lower and higher frequencies clearly. I'll try to use cmss-3d later for movies because I don't have DVDs that have 5.1 channels audio output yet. However, I tried with VCDs with stereo sound, it sounds quite good. Finally, if you want to improve your sound quality using sound card, I recommend you Xmod instead of your old on-board sound.

as a Mac guy , I never had Creative sound cards. I do have a a couple of higher end components though. Adcom 5801 amp + GPA 750 preamp + Energy veritas 2.1.. and a Bryston 3Bst w/Parasound 3B preamp and Boston acoustics V500 sub with exl 16 energy's
(Now playing w JBL mini monitors). Most I picked up used . These are very quiet ,dynamic
components, but the Ipod / Creative Labs Xmod combo lights these systems up. Always account for volume differences when a/b testing + + a little noise. But that
little machine really amazes me. Quasi audiophiles have to fault everything. Not here brother. Whatever makes you dance Rates an "a". Detail is back with a hand full of cables..and I'm not using the 3d imaging function...well made and the best money I've spent on gear in years. Just plain fun.
I Love It!.......2007-08-20
I've had this since last December. It is going into an IBM t43 laptop. It is connected to an input of my preamp, going thru my stereo (which includes $2000 PSB speakers.) I subsribe to Rhapsody and Live365. I'm not a kid, and I'm not into hyperbole...but the xmod makes these appys sound almost like cd's. I don't use the 3D at all (it justs adds distortion.) But the Crytalizer is unbelievable. I agree with other folks who say that it doesn't do anything for music above 128k, but for typical 32-128 streams, I couldn't live without it!

Xmod shows its greatest strength when it plays a low quality recorded music, especially when you play midi music files with the basic soundfont in DirectX. It plays midi music making no diffence from 34 mb soundfont midi playing. It did not reach my expectation when I played 128 kbps MP3 files though it performed well its fuction at 64 kbps or 32 kbps files.
Generally, Xmod is a great sound card. I recommend it.
Great to replace on-board sound.......2007-08-01
I was looking for an external sound card for use at work (since I don't want to install anything internal) since my onboard sound has a humming background noise effect+probably doesn't deliver the sound quality that I could get from a dedicated sound card. I realized it would be too cumbersome for a full blown external and came onto this device.
I think I paid around $60 shipped for it. Worth every penny. Let me elaborate.
I run these through a great set of Sennheiser 280 Pros, and previously HD590s. The 3d effect does not do this device any wonders; when you listen through good headphones, you hear high pitched noises since they pick up all the detail.
However, the x-fi crystalizer effect is EXCELLENT. Although slightly harsh at times, it does wonders to open up and make music sound "full". Again, if you don't have quality headphones, you aren't going to notice as much. I listened to the same music through one of my co-workers crappy cans and it sounded NOTHING like it did on my audiophile grade phones, and it did appear to make little difference when on or off. Additionally, I hear complete silence when I mute my sound, no static or noise whatsoever so I know I'm getting a good quality signal.
So, to that effect, I would say pass on this if you are expecting wonders out of your $15 set of headphones; you will probably be very disappointed. But for those that are serious about getting a very portable improvement to their sound, and have the headphones to back it up, this device will awe and amaze you.

Not sure of compatibility.......2007-06-27
This USB 2.0 card was purchased because I have an older PC with USB 1.1 ports and needed 2.0 for my new MP3 player. Since it has so many ports and I only needed 1, I figured I'd used another port for another use. It turns out I have a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard/Mouse setup. The receiver is a USB unit. Naturally I thought I'd use this board for my keyboard & mouse. After I installed this card, everytime I power-up, I get a messaged from Windows saying that the O/S didn't find my keyboard! It then boots and finds both keyboard & mouse (both work through one receiver). Now, once the PC is booted and up, the MP3 player and software work just fine. So the problems only occur during boot time and then go away.

Works - But.......2007-01-21
Easy to install in a dual G5 Power Mac, no drivers required. The card works fine with OS 10.4.8, but the computer will not go into Sleep Mode if a disk drive is connected to this card (including iPods). The drives will sleep, but not the Mac. The computer will sleep fine if my scanner, card reader (without card) and IR remote are plugged into this card. Also, if you plug your keyboard into the card, you can't wake the computer because the card is "sleeping". I checked the ADS website and there are no fixes for the sleep issues. If you can work around the quirks, the card does work.
For Mac Users, It Really Is Plug & Go!.......2006-07-25
As a long time Mac user in a PC-product dominated world, I always twitch slightly when installing generic "dual platform" products. No need in this case -- I slapped one into an older G4 (Gigabit Ethernet model with an Powerlogix processor upgrade) running MacOS 10.4.7, fired up the machine, and boom 4 additional ports (5 if you count the internal one, which I'm gonna figure out something to do with), no fuss, no muss, no drivers or tweaking needed. Although I haven't tried any formal timing runs, reading files either directly from a digital camera or via a generic flashcard reader is very notably faster (why I installed the card in the first place) making this product a very good investment of $20.
The Jury is still out........2004-11-17
I bought this card for my Micron 1.2 GH Athlon based system running WinME. The on-board USB power supply craped-out on my motherboard and adding a card seemed a much simpler solution than replacing the motherboard. Based upon the other two reviews, I figured it was worth a try, especially considering the low price.
After installing the card yesterday and attempting to install the software I am still not running after several hours of troubleshooting. The documentation and software that comes with this card is minimal at best. There is also very little information on their website. I emailed tech-support with a detailed description of my problem tonight we will see if they are any help.
When I reboot the computer after installing the card, the system finds the new hardware, but after installing the software (drivers) and then rebooting, the system asks for a windows file "openhci.sys." Presumably this is a winME file but sofar I haven't been able to download an up-to-date file from Microsoft?

This product works best when used to display PC-based videos.

I tried to use this with a Mac Mini. It worked, not quite as advertised (it didn't go to the highest refresh rates listed), and the played-through video to the monitor was too smudgy at higher resolutions to use. The picture on the TV was OK, but in movies with subtle shading there was visible banding from lack of color depth. I returned it and will have to use the Apple video adapter that, while requiring physical unplugging/plugging of cables to switch from monitor to TV (which is what I wanted to avoid), the picture was far better.

Works great! Very easy to set up! I use it to connect my laptop to a TV for webcast viewing. Ensure you use the correct VGA out connection. I only wish it came with cables and converter for RGA audio connection.

This item did not improve the sound of our computer-based music played on our stereo. It was easy to install and set up, as advertised, but we noticed no appreciable difference in sound quality, so we returned the item.

TRUST ME WHEN YOU PLUG INTO THE USB PORT IN BACK OF THE PC THE MUSIC FROM YOUR PC SOUNDS WASHED OUT. USE YOUR SOUND CARD WHICH HAS AN EQUILIZER TO ADJUST THE SOUND TO YOUR LIKING. It basically works, but in my installation it had low signal level output and a loud 60Hz hum. A ground loop isolator removed the hum, but revealed a faint high-pitched whine. It did, however, come with a very good audio cable. Users might be happier with the Turtle Beach Advantage Micro, and save a few dollars.

I've sold all of my CD's, and I don't miss them! I use my iMac and my HiFi-Link exclusively when listening to music at home. You'll get the fullest sound quality possible out of any MP3 collection with this basic HiFi-Link (the pro model is overkill for music).

Memory defective.......2007-06-18
The two memory cards that I purchased did not work either because they were defective or not compatible. I contacted the vendor that sold them to me and was told that I could not return them because I had opened the package. It is hard to know if a product does not work without trying it so I believe that their return policy is wrong. I am now trying to contact the manufacturer because the package indicates a 100% guarantee. So far, no success in getting a response back.

yes, i got this product in time, fast delivery & i think the sellers are reliable in that matter. however, i bougth the wrong item. My computer doesn't accept 512mb sdram module, it accept two of 256 mb sdram to reach the maximum of 512mb memory Ram. so the problem is this product is not eligible for return, i think, because i ask them for return authorization and they didn't give me one. I guess i just have to save this for future use.

I purchased this from CompUSA, worked fine for about 2 or 3 months. Now, Windows doesn't recognize it. Avoid this product, the other reviews are right-on.
Sort of worked, for a few days.......2007-05-15
I got this USB 2.0 card with an iPod. I installed the card and its driver. In the beginning, it was there, but it didn't like to talk to my iPod. After a few days, it completely disappeared, in the sense that the OS didn't seem to know it was there anymore, and I couldn't get the OS to recognize devices plugged into it. So I've had to sync my iPod through USB 1.1, which takes a looooong time.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. I've tried fiddling with all kinds of crap in Windoze. I've checked the physical installation of the card and even cleaned the contactsm, to no avail. The device manager seems to know the card is there, and when I plug devices into the card, they show signs of getting power, but the OS never recognizes that the devices have been plugged in. Now that I've read a bunch of reviews from other users who also had the problem of this card disappearing (and apparently the folks at StarTech even told one of them they know this 6-port card has problems), I know this was not an isolated incident, and I thought it would be worthwhile to add my voice to the chorus of complaints about this card. I will be buying a new USB 2.0 card from a different seller and manufacturer.
I give this useless card one star because Amazon doesn't seem to have a way for me to give it zero.

I bought this StarTech USB 2.0 PCI card (PCI625USB2I) for my aging PC (circa 2000) with WinXP/SP2 about 6 months ago and it originally seemed to work fine. Until it didn't. To make a long story short, after countless hours/days/weeks troubleshooting WinXP, loading different drivers, trying different USB equipment, switching PCI ports, I narrowed it down to this piece of junk. After replacing the unit with another manufacturer's USB 2.0 PCI card, everything was back to normal. I strongly DO NOT recommend this product. My conclusion is that this company did not have sufficient quality control testing this product. Reading all the other negative complaints on Amazon.com's reviews, resellers need to STOP SELLING this product, which is poorly designed and insufficiently tested.
