Amazon.com Product Description
If you want the total creative control an SLR offers, but don't like lugging around a cumbersome kit, Minolta's Maxxum 5 is worth a look. It's one of the world's smallest and lightest autofocus SLRs, and its extensive array of high-performance features adjusts to offer something for everyone from beginners to advanced amateur photographers.
Design
Measuring just 5 by 3.4 by 2.4 inches and weighing in at around 12 ounces, the body of the Maxxum 5 is about the same size as many point-and-shoot cameras--of course, the lens adds to this size and weight, but it's still an extremely compact design. To save weight, much of the body is made of high-impact plastic, with a metal lens mount and tripod mount for durability. The camera uses Minolta A-mount lenses, and a 28-80mm Minolta AF zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f3.5 to f5.6 is included.
Key Features
Primary features include spot-metering and spot-focusing, depth-of-field preview, a built-in multimode flash, 7-point autofocus system, a maximum shutter speed of 1/4,000th of a second, 3 FPS rapid-fire shooting, and 14-segment metering. A powerful processor and speedy motor combine to provide one of the fastest autofocus systems available.
Additional Features
In addition, the Maxxum 5 features "eye-start automation," a performance enhancer that senses when you put your eye to the viewfinder and starts preparing to take a shot immediately. If you're planning to use the camera in the studio, the wireless flash setting communicates with Minolta off-camera flash units.
Contents
The kit comes with the Maxxum 5 body, 28-80mm AF zoom lens, shoulder strap, lens cap, and a pair of CR2 batteries.
Customer Reviews:
A great camera at a great price.......2003-07-29
I shopped around and did research before purchasing my Minolta and found that this camera had all the features (plus some) of the more expensive, heavier cameras in its class. The eye-start feature is an excellent feature, the camera focuses automatically when brought to your eye(this feature can be turned off).
This camera is really easy to use if you have no camera experience, but also has more difficult manual options if you want to be more creative. I tested out the multiple pictures option on my friends golf swing. I was able to take 5 pictures during his one swing. Another good quality that this camera has is that if you try to get creative and get in over your head, you can restore all the defaults with the touch of a button.
I have not found anything that I don't like about this camera.
An awesome camera for a great price.......2003-06-25
If you're looking for a nice camera to get you started in your photography hobby, I highly recommend checking this out. I have used both the Maxxum 4 and Maxxum 5. You can't go wrong with either - the quality that Minolta keeps is wonderful.
Granted, the Maxxum 5 has a few more features that the Maxxum 4, such as the eye-start feature and a few other custom functions. One that I particularly like is the fact that you can have the camera leave the film leader out of the cannister. It may seem trivial to do so, but if you want to change 35mm film in the middle of the roll, this becomes quite useful.
In addition, the Maxxum 5 has a faster autofocus servo and you can tell a definite difference there. My Maxxum 5 focuses much faster than my brother's Maxxum 4. On top of that, the Maxxum 5 features a metal lens mount, whereas the Maxxum 4 only has a plastic mount. This adds durability to the camera as well as the lens.
In conclusion, I think that the features that Minolta packed into this camera are wonderful. I also looked at getting a Cannon Rebel 2000 and a Nikon N65 when looking for the camera but found the Maxxum 5 to have the greatest number of features for the price. In addition, I thought the control layout on the camera fit my hand better than the other two cameras.
The Ideal Beginner Camera.......2003-05-30
I am a 15-year old interested in photography. I spent most of my picture-taking years with either a Kodak Advantix or a disposable camera.
Finally, when I took photography seriously enough, my parents purchased the Minolta Maxxum 5. We did not really know much about cameras at the time, but now about 6 months later, I know this was the right choice.
The biggest thing I hated about Advantix cameras was that it took nearly 2 or so seconds to take a picture. Those who take pictures a lot can probably understand how fustrating this can be. The Maxxum 5 can take up to 3 frames per second.
Another thing I was upset about was the zoom. The Advantix cameras have a set zoom and that's it. With SLR cameras you can buy new lenses, though a bit pricy, to get what you want. The lens this package comes with is the 28-80. This is VERY similar to what my Advantix was. (NOTE: For those who wish to have more zoom should as well purchase a 70-300mm lens) I was disappointed I didn't have more zoom but enjoyed the fact I had a new camera to play with...so many features!
From the different modes, including Sports, Potrait, Landscape, Closeup, and Night time, to multiple photos on one frame. This camera offers more than it's size tells!
This little bugger is very light as well. The weight will increase with the larger lens, so you don't want a heavy camera body.
Auto and manual focus were very easy to figure out, as well as changing lenses. Those used to Advantix cameras and not those which use 35mm film will spend a LITTLE bit of time figuring out how to insert a roll of film. Doesn't take long, and soon you'll be changing film so quickly, no one near you even notices!
To this day, I still haven't learned every feature this camera offers. It's a bit hard to memorize the way to prepare some of these features, but that's why you keep your little manual with you.
Perfect for beginners in photography, including teenagers.
great way to upgrade froma point and shoot.......2002-10-25
I tried a few different point and shoot cameras that I was unhappy with. They were either too slow so I missed the shot or the pictures were blurry. I love the autofocus on this camera. These are the best pictures I've ever taken.
Get some sleep, this one is a sure thing.......2002-09-28
I researched the heck out of SLR camera's before making this purchase. First, I must say that the reviews here were very helpful so I ultimately made the purchase through Amazon. Second, I am thrilled with the camera and all its features. In comparing the Maxxum 5 with the competition, I was a bit worried that I was missing something obvious since it clearly has a superior price point in relation to the features offered. But in the end, it was the superficial that swayed me: the Maxxum 5 absolutely blows the competition away with its great look, feel, and sturdy compact size. Pickup "Understanding Exposure" as well to supplement the minimalist owners manual.

Amazon.com Product Description
The small, light Minolta Maxxum 35mm AF SLR is easy to pack, carry, and handle on all your adventures. The Maxxum 5 also houses a powerful array of high-performance features that will satisfy both beginner photographers and serious photo hobbyists. This version of the Maxxum 5 comes with no lens.
The Maxxum 5's high-response autofocus system makes sure your once-in-a-lifetime moments will be razor sharp. This new-generation Maxxum features an improved high-power AF drive motor and high-speed microcomputer for quicker and more precise AF control. It tracks even fast action and random movements effortlessly, right up to the moment the shutter is released.
The Maxxum 5 uses Minolta's new seven-point AF system. The focus sensors are laid out in a wide area to the "rule of thirds," so you have the creative flexibility of positioning your subject anywhere within the focus frame. The center crosshair sensor keeps the focus sharp regardless of vertical or horizontal subject contrast. For maximum autofocus control, the Maxxum 5 has three AF modes: single-shot, continuous-predictive, and automatic.
The Maxxum 5 is designed around speed, precision, and power. It features a top shutter speed of 1/4,000 second, which can stop fast action or let you take beautiful portraits using large apertures under strong light. For capturing action as it unfolds, the Maxxum 5 can be set for continuous film advance. The film advances at three frames per second as long as you hold down the shutter-release button.
The Maxxum 5's state-of-the-art metering system delivers accurate exposures under a diverse range of lighting and subject conditions. It measures light levels from 13 segments in a honeycomb pattern across the viewfinder frame, plus the background area. And much like the method used by professional photographers, this intelligent metering system emphasizes the meter segments surrounding the focus sensor in use.
The built-in flash covers lenses as wide as 28mm, and puts creative flash control at your fingertips with auto, off, fill-flash, red-eye reduction, and provides wireless remote flash control modes. For greater flash output and versatility, high-powered Maxxum flash units are available as optional accessories. The Maxxum 5 also features a maximum flash sync speed of 1/125 second.
Customer Reviews:
Maxxum 5.......2003-03-18
My Minolta Maxxum 5 didn't make it through 1 roll of film. It wouldn't work with the 5400HS flash or the wireless remote as advertised. ...`
Great Beginner SLR that grows with you.......2002-02-08
The Minolta Maxxum 5, at a first glance seems to be the consummate budget SLR - small, compact, and seemingly devoid of the "Star Wars" features packed on the more advanced and higher end cameras. This little Maxxum will surprise, time and time again. It has unique features associated with Maxxum cameras, such as the eye start function - a feature that starts the camera autofocus and camera operation the moment your eye looks through the viewfinder. The camera's functions and important operations are very simple and easy to use - Minolta placed the buttons and dials in places where you can reach the important functions without EVER having to take your eyes off the viewfinder. The camera has 6 Modes to pick from, other than the obvious Manual mode - where you pick the f-stop and shutter speeds - There's Program - which is your basic jack of all trades, pretty reliable in all situations. Portrait - the camera selects a "soft" f-stop to give your subject a pleasing feel and look. Landscape, Action, Nature, and Night.. night scene is probably the most feature extensive, since it illuminates the flash for longer exposures to bring out the background behind your subject during night shots. Of course, you can set the camera for aperature and shutter priority functions. My only real gripe with the camera itself was the fact that it uses it's two CR2 batteries far too quickly, running through about 14 to 19 rolls of 36 exposure film - depending on if the camera uses it's built in flash often or not. The flash is good for fill situations, but it would be a much better option to pick a dedicated flash unit to save battery power and give your portraits more "pop" - something with a guide number of ASA 100 is just about right for this kind of camera. The autofocus is fabulous - the camera can focus flawlessly in near dark situations, but it does take SOME time - about a second or two.. but in fully bright situations, the autofocus rivals some of the top-end SLR's, right up there with the Minolta Maxxum 7's and 9's. All in all, this is a great budget SLR to start out with that will continue to give the serious amateur/beginner room to grow.
Great camera, very versatile........2001-11-10
Lots of nice features, I especially like the depth of focus preview. The nice thing about this camera is that it can be totally manually adjusted, totally automated (focus, fstop, etc.) or many places in between. I can do what I want manually while someone who doesn't really know much about photography can still take great pictures without having to worry about adjusting anything. I haven't even scratched the surface on most of the features, but what I've used so far is intuitive and functional.
Nice improvement from 600si.......2001-08-29
Previous camera was Maxxum 600si which we loved. The Maxxum 5 is a mid-level SLR with a ton of features in a tiny package. Auto-focus is much quicker than 600si (with a Tokina 28-70 2.8 it is as fast as old camera w/ Minolta 50). You can select the active focus point by rolling through 7 separate points, each highlighted by red LED (could be brighter but nice). TINY CAMERA but feels 'right'. Feels much more like a Canon w/ features and weight. Ease of use is very good, not as easy as button happy 600, but better than others I tried in the store. First pictures look great. Highly recommend, especially if new Canons feel good to you. [....]
Don't forget the batteries, film and lense.......2001-08-24
The camera came and we were all ready with the film in hand. There was no lense as pictured. Also there were no batteries. The camera overall has a nice feel and is small enough to bring along anywhere.

Product Description
Kit includes: 1) Sigma 17-35mm EX DG IF HSM Aspherical Zoom Lens; 2) 6-Piece Cleaning Kit; 3) Sigma Spudz Microfiber Cleaning Cloth; 4) Hoya 77mm UV Protector Filter. ♦ Sigma 17-35mm Lens includes: Front & Rear Lens Caps; Lens Hood; Instructions; Sigma USA Warranty. ♦ The Sigma 17-35mm has an internal focusing system which eliminates front lens rotation. This makes it easy to use with circular polarizing filters plus it enables using a more effective petal-shaped lens hood to reduce flare as much as possible for more vivid images. It incorporates aspherical lens elements to minimize distortion and spherical aberration. With an impressive minimum focus distance of only 10.6 inches at all focal lengths, you are able to place subjects in the foreground to give a sense of depth to your scenic shots for truly creative and well-composed photographs. ♦ Digital SLRs such as the Nikon D40, D80 and D200 have a 1.5x Lens Factor and the Canon Digital Rebel XTi and EOS 30D have a 1.6x Lens Factor which makes getting true wide angle photos with a 28-80mm lens problematic. On 35mm Film Cameras and Full Frame sensor Digital SLRs, you get the listed focal length range without any sensor cropping. When used on cameras with a 1.5x lens factor you get a wonderfully wide 25.5mm to 52.5mm effective focal length zoom lens that's just what you need for scenic landscapes; family reunions; as well as terrific vacation and travel photos. ♦ Hoya UV Filters are made of optical glass and can be left on your lenses at all times — even when taking pictures. A filter prevents damage to the delicate surface coatings of the lens and shields the front element from scratches. A UV filter enhances image quality by reducing the adverse effects of ultraviolet light which can cause outdoor photographs to appear hazy and indistinct. ♦ This Sigma Lens-plus-necessities Kit will help give you the amazing vacation, travel, and family photos you've always wanted.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Camera with some drawbacks.......2007-05-26
Initially, I purchased a Minolta Maxxum 4, but was sent the Maxxum 5 instead. No problem, as I figured they were basically the same camera. As has been mentioned, the camera is feather light, which in my opinion, isn't necessarily a plus. I have never cared for the feel of a point and shoot, and this camera reminds me of that. Even though, it's heavy on the functions, and has all the neat stuff a high priced camera has. But, it has some drawbacks. Nearly all of my pictures taken in the auto mode with flash have been overexposed. Every now and then I'll get a nicely exposed photo, but it's been rare. Also, I've had trouble with the power on this camera. Not sure what happened, but I couldn't get the camera to come on. I replaced the batteries (twice), and still no power. And then, as if by a miracle, the power came on and I haven't had any trouble since. Now, wouldn't that be a pain if one were in a situation whereby you were taking memories that were priceless?? Another thing: My camera came with a CD that has the manual on it. I don't care for that in that I've had to print it out and try to make it compact enough to carry with me on shoots.
If I had it to do over, I'm not sure this would be the camera I'd choose. Problem is, I like the functions, and they're relatively easy to learn. Picture quality (so far) hasn't been what I'd expect; not anything near my Minolta Maxxum 7000 that I've had for 15 years.

Spot meter and a wireless off shoe flash system. you don't need to have a pc cable for it.
as for flash units on this camera. you can find cheap flash units at camrea stores. the reason why Minolta made the flash shoe that way because it's customers where telling them they would like to see a faster locking flash shoe on there cameras. there are no crossover flash on the market that you can use on all the cameras. when you buy a flash for a canon you can't use it on a nikon. but there is onley one flash co. out there that do make a adoptor for all the cameras on the market for there flash.
this is a very simple and easy camera to use and yet very powerfull too.
Pro photographer.......2004-02-04
This is a very good camera is you do not want to gett a cheap slr w/ every thing thing you need but if you ever think of going digatl go with canon becuse they have better bodys and lenses and both work with all the lens they have now so i would say if u r not going to go diatl get this but if you r look at a canon flim SLR
Great features, poor reliability.......2004-01-10
This camera has great features for the price, and I was extremely happy with the quality of the photos I took in the 3 days I had the camera. Then it started eating whole rolls of film. After contacting the manufacturer they would repair it and I would pay all shipping costs. I returned it to amazon instead.
Recent buyer.......2003-11-28
Photos taken from my Minolta 5, which I recently purchased, have been by and large disappointing. Whether using manual or automatic mode for focus, lighting, subject type, etc. the resulting photos do not exceed the quality one would obtain with a normal point-and-shoot camera. So far, the "extra performance" of this SLR with multiple menus has failed to materialise. I would very much like to trade it in for another brand.

Beautiful Photos Every Time.......2006-01-26
I LOVE this camera. I've had it for about three years now and I have yet to take a bad picture. They are all clear, crisp and beautiful. My brother has even asked me to take photos at his wedding next year because he loves my portfolio. This truly is a terrific camera. I won't go digital because I love this camera so much.
Great camera.......2004-09-28
I bought maxxum 5 from amazon about 2+ years ago. There is almost no way to take bad pictures with this camera. I have taken pictures sharp clear and so professional looking that I was tempted to send them to National Geographic ! Anyway, I am not a professional photographer but have been using maxxum line (I had a 7000i) for quite some time. I love how small and light but yet ergonomic this camera is. You can handle this with one hand and still not risk shaking. Battery life is great. Along with this camera I also bought 80-300mm zoom lense from sigma. My camera was not the QD version, that is my only gripe. But that was my since I did not look for the QD version at the time of purchase.
Another great minolta.......2004-07-09
I've had a series of minolta SLRs (5xi, 500si, etc), most recently the Maxxum 5. They've all been great and have all done very well for me. Features, sharpness, exposure, automatic and manual modes all just what I need.
When considering the maxxum 5 I was initially worried about the comments about the size and whether my somewhat-large hands would be able to use it comfortably, so I checked it out thoroughly at a local camera shop before buying. no problem. It's light and relatively comfortable, and definitely feature packed, and most features are easy to learn and are accessible.
I have a 28-80mm lens made by quantum that is also light and does well on this body. Also a straight 50mm for low-light and close-up, though the zoom actually does well enough to handle almost all situations I need, even some floral close-ups.
FWIW, I'd probably be classed as an advance amateur.
I've taken photos for many years now.
Great Beginning Camera.......2003-12-20
I love my Minolta Maxxum 5. The auto features make this camera easy to use and easy to get great pictures as a novice. Being able to switch individual features to manual also make it easy to learn how to use a 35mm SLR. My camera goes everywhere with me and has held up well. This camera is a lot of fun to use.
Light camera, average results!.......2003-12-12
I had Dynax 7000i for quite some time, and since the body developed cracks, I replaced that first with Maxxum 4. But that particular piece would occasionally turn off immediately after being turned on. So I returned that and bought Maxxum 5, with Vectis-1 flash. I am sorry to day that I got results worse that Maxxum4, and both were not comparable to what I got with my old rusty trusty Dynax 7000i. The advantages are light weight and small size. I didn't fancy the eye start very much, as I use it mostly in manual mode. To use the D lens's strength, you need to have D flashes, which are not cheap. There is absolutely no vignetting. If you shoot in burst mode, then it doesn't disappoint you.
Final word - there are much better cameras out there for this price.

Greater starter SLR camera.......2004-08-22
I bought this camera a year ago in an attempt to learn to master the art of photography, and I have not been disappointed. The manual and automatic settings allow you to gradually work into directing your own shots, and the quality couldn't be better. I've been very impressed by all the photos taken with this camera, I only need to buy a greater zoom to go with it. Great camera for a great price!

Customer Reviews:
don't buy if your on a budget.......2006-03-08
i bought this camera after i took a high school photo class, what a piece of junk, in the 2 years i've owned it it's been repaired 3x - once at my expense of $130.00. The only thing this camera had barely outlasted was it's warranty. if your not fanatical about record keeping it's very difficult to figure out who to call to send it back. each time it went in it was gone for about 2.5 monthes. i've owned a nikon N75 for about 6 monthes now, and i must say, i love it, hasn't failed me yet, i used to think nikon was just a name and history, but nikons reputation really means something. I'm writing this for you - i'll update this if i hit any problems with the nikon or if minolta redeems themselves.
Excellent camera.......2005-09-19
I have one of these that I use on occasion. I shoot with a Digital SLR, but I do have to tell you that this camera really surprised me. The clarity of the pictures is astounding! I got mine with the 28-100mm zoom lens and I love it. I use it to take film shots of landscapes and portraits and compare them to the digital shots I get from my Nikon D-70.
VERY light and feature-rich, perfect for advanced amateurs.......2003-03-31
This camera is really marvelous, pretty light to lug around and superb performance. The following features are the ones which makes it a great buy for the price
- Eye Start (I love it, this feature is not there in Maxxum 4)
- 9 point autofocus, focus lock
- fully automatic mode, shutter-priority/aperture-priority and fully manual modes
- red-eye reduction, in-built pop-up flash
- convenient pre-set program modes (portrait,landscape,close-up,sports and night portrait)
- upto 9 multiple exposures
the film loading mechanism is smooth and easy, though it could have done with a warning message (rather than a blinking '0') when film is not loaded properly.
Has focus indicator, locks shutter when still focussing (can happen when using zoom telephoto lenses), has exposure range warnings, shutter speed warnings (if the recommended aperture or shutter speed is outside the range of your lens), the eye-sensor could have been better, but this drawback can be overcome with the exposure preview button, all in all I'm very satisfied with this camera.
Note: don't compare it with professional grade cameras like Nikon F 100... this camera does not have a color database like the pro-grades, so your exposure might be off by 1-2 stops when shooting extremely bright/dark subjects due to 'mid-tone'ing.
