With video playback, gaming, multimedia messaging and a VGA camera with digital zoom, the Motorola V220 is an affordable and powerful way to get in on all the mobile fun. What's more, it's a quad-band phone with global roaming capabilities.

Design
The phone features a sleek clamshell design with a large 128 x 128 color display with 65,000 colors. The outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary 96 x 32 blue monochrome display that can display time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The VGA camera lens is housed below this display. A stub antenna is placed on the top right side of the unit. Volume buttons are placed on the left side, as is a USB port for data connectivity. Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. There's a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets on the bottom of the handset, next to the phone's charging port.

Calling Features
The V220 allows you to assign pictures to your most common callers. It also supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3 ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. A number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone and there's even an included application, MotoMixer, that enables you to mix your own ringtones.

Speed dialing, which allows you to call pre-programmed numbers with one button is built in, as is a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The V220 features support for instant messaging applications (carrier messaging charges apply) and there's also a built-in web browser for downloads and mobile web browsing. Traditional text messaging, as well as picture and sound messaging (MMS) are also supported by the phone. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the V220 including a voice memo recorder, a calculator with currency converter, a calendar and an alarm clock.

Imaging and Entertainment
The V220's USB connectivity can be used to transfer pictures, sounds and graphics to the phone's 1.8 MB memory from your PC. Screensavers, themes and wallpapers can be set to your tastes. The V220 is Java enabled, meaning it supports games and application downloads written on the Java platform. The phone ships with a single game, Bejeweled. For extra gaming fun, the phone is haptics enabled, meaning the phone's vibrate system is activated by crashes or other events in games. The V220 also supports MPEG4 video playback. Load video clips from your PC or download them from a wireless web provider and enjoy video on the go.

The phone's built-in camera features VGA (640x480) resolution and a 4x digital zoom for getting great shots on the go.

Vital Statistics
The V220 weighs 3.76 ounces and measures 3.29 x 1.73 x .94 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 7.2 hours of digital talk time, and up to 380 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

I bought this phone because my service provider was going to the GSM network, and I needed to update. I didn't have a lot of money at the time, so I went with what I could get - big mistake! I've had the phone for exactly one month, and I really miss my old phone! The new phone arrived more quickly than they said it would, which was really great, but the phone itself is terrible. There was no manual, so I emailed the company to ask them for one. They did not respond, so after two days I put a bad review up. They responded with an email telling me they would email me the manual, but they wanted me to take off the bad review. I did so, and they emailed me the manual, but it was the wrong one, and I couldn't go back and put the review up again. Within a week, the display on the outside of the phone cracked, and it no longer works -- there was absolutely no rough handling of the phone to cause this. I have bought refurbished products before and never had any problem until now. The sound is terrible, the phone buzzes in my ear and feels like electricity is going into my head, and it constantly drops calls. I know it's not my service provider because they have always had excellent coverage. Unfortunatly, I will not be able to afford a real phone for another couple of months, at which time I will spend a lot of money on a new phone and get a warranty with it.

I can't wait to replace this phone; in fact, that's why I'm on Amazon right now........2007-07-17

I hate this phone; it's ugly and bulky. They shouldn't have included the camera because it adds so much heft and doesn't take particularly good photos. The alarm clock feature is awkward (bad for me, since I'm a college student who uses her phone as an alarm clock). However, in my experience, this phone is EXTREMELY durable. I've dropped it down flights of concrete stairs, off the second floor balcony of my house, etc. and it still works perfectly. Amazing. This would be a good choice child/young teenager's first phone.

Good phone but............2007-07-15

I recently purchased this phone after carrying around a hideously out of date Sony Ericson for the last 4 years (but I am a technology cheapie.) Simply stuff your old SIM card into the phone, turn it on, find your network and your ready to go. Now the bad part - while this is a great phone you will not get signal inside your house. Outside - no problem, inside - well, better keep your other phone handy.

Overall the call quality is very good.

i've had my phone for over a year now and in that time i've paid to have the screen fixed 3 times - each time for about $50. i can still receive and send calls (if i have the number written down or memorized) but i can't text or see who called. basically, this phone is junk. be ready to purchase a new phone in a year's time if you get this model.

Buyer Beware!.......2006-10-17

The camera's zoom features went out after 2 months. Now, 18 months later the camera no longer works, but I didn't use it all that much to begin with. The reception is pretty lousy and I had the typical commerical ad happen to me when during the WORST time it could happen, it went completely DEAD! As of now, I can call manually and receive calls but heaven forbid it goes into voicemail. The battery won't stay charged,the screen won't work (I get nothing but transposed gibberish)and I can't retrieve any info. I thank God my contract will be up soon. This phone is a piece of JUNK. PHOOEY!

Great phone! Until it starts messing up..........2006-08-12

I had this phone for nearly a year with no problems, aside from the camera inexplicably stopping working. A few months ago the battery on the phone started draining within 8 hours of being fully charged. I sent for a replacement and within a few weeks it started doing it again, but this time it shuts off randomly.

My brother got the same phone as me and within six months his battery was being constantly drained. He also sent for a replacement, which has worked until recently, when he started having problems with not being heard on the other end.

All in all, this phone isn't worth the trouble. It will work great for awhile, then it won't, and depending on your provider, you'll be stuck with a crap phone and another year on your contract.

DON'T BUY THIS PHONE. AMEN!.......2006-06-16

I have had this phone one year and two months, with a one year warranty. It was great until the warranty expired. I have excellent service with Cingular, but the phone is BAD! I've also heard other people (3) say they had problems with their V220 also. First, the camera went out. Then two weeks later, I started seeing horizontal lines across my inside screen. The outside ID still works, but NOW, the inside screen is either, black or white OR multi-color with so many horizontal lines, that I cannot function anymore. I can't access my address book and not all info is on my SIM card... guess I've lost some valuable information. I've been a faithful Motorola customer for 5 years. I'm considering going to Sony.

Don't Buy.......2007-08-20

This product won't recognize my phone, even though it says SLVR L7 (my phone) in the title. The USB cable won't fit into the USB port on my computer because there is part of the plastic molding sticking out into the socket, so I could only connect my phone using an extension USB cable from my printer. Once I figured that out my computer recognizes that my phone is plugged in, but the Motorola Phone Tools program still won't recognize it.

The only way to transfer pics from razr to computer.......2007-08-03

Excellent software. It's as easy as put the disc into the computer, then transfer images from phone to computer. All I need now is a better picture phone so my pics are clearer. A must buy tool for motorola phones.

Handy but Slow.......2007-07-28

This Motorola Phones Tools is easy to use, however on my new computer it is very very slow to process any request. For instance, if you are creating a new ring tone it can take one hour, because every time you click a button it takes 30-60 to process. The software features are great, however, so if you have endless patience give it a try.
