Amazon.com Product Description
With the addition of the Stylus Epic Zoom 170 QD camera to its popular Stylus line, Olympus has introduced several new features, including an extremely powerful 4.5x zoom lens, an extra-low dispersion (ED) glass lens element that reduces color aberration when the telephoto lens is fully extended, and a newly developed advanced combination autofocus system. The zoom also includes two aspherical lens elements for crisp, high-contrast images.
The advanced combination autofocus system has a focus range from 2.6 feet to infinity, and automatically switches between active and passive modes to give you the clearest image possible. With the focus lock feature, the camera will even remember your current focus setting for a few seconds so you can reframe your shot. Besides having a completely automatic focus system, the Epic Zoom 170 features autoexposure, as well as auto film loading and rewinding, making it extremely easy and convenient to use.
An intelligent, variable-power built-in flash provides exclusive auto color-balancing and red-eye reduction. In addition, you can set the flash to auto, off, fill-in, or night scene modes to better suit your shooting conditions. If you are shooting when the lens is in wide-angle format, and using ISO 100 color negative film, you get a flash range from 2.6 to 16.4 feet; in telephoto format, the range is 2.6 to 5.9 feet. With ISO 400 color negative film, you get a flash range from 2.6 to 32.8 feet in wide-angle and 2.6 to 11.8 feet in telephoto.
The Epic Zoom 170 QD comes with a date-imprinting option. You can chose from: no data, year-month-day, month-day-year, day-month-year, and day-hour-minute. This guarantees that you will never again forget when you shot each roll of film. It even has an automatic calendar system through the year 2035.
This camera boasts the same lightweight, ultracompact clamshell design as the rest of the sporty Stylus line-up. The sliding cover provides all-weather durability against rain, snow, or water splashed from any direction. Although it isn't waterproof, it gives you worry-free use while skiing, at the beach, or in most foul weather conditions. The real-image zoom viewfinder lets you see exactly how your shot is framed before you take the picture, while the diopter correction adjusts to your individual vision requirements.

My Favorite Camera.......2007-08-17
In case someone is still looking for a non-digital camera, this is the one to get! The zoom is great (170), the photos turn out with crisp colors, and it's easy to use with very simple buttons. There are basically 6 "buttons" for choices. One button controls flash (none, flash only, red eye), another controls the zoom distace, two buttons control the date stamp (none and other varieties), one controls the self timer, and the last one takes the photos! That's it! It loads film automatically with an LED screen that tells you if you are successful or not. LED screen tells you the date/time, number of photos taken, and flash choices, if any, that you make.
The only drawback is the weight, especially compared to the small digital cameras out there, but it needs to be heavier to support the zoom lens that comes out. I've had this camera for over 10 years and never had a problem.
olympus stylus 170QD zoom canera.......2007-01-03
very easy to use. size is just right to carry in pockets, etc. pictures are sharp and clear. would buy this camera again.
Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom 170 QD 35mm camera.......2006-08-25
I ordered this camera used a year ago through Amazon to try it out. However, the used camera always gave me trouble. The zoom would not work with the autofocus or the flash and when putting in a new roll of film it often went right to rewind and I lost a roll of film. But I did like the quality of pictures the camera produced and the ease of operation. I have been very pleased with this new camera. Everything works and I got my first roll of developed pictures back and was very pleased with the quality.
Good camera for the price.......2005-10-26
I had an Olympus Accura for seven years and loved it so when it crashed I wanted another Olympus. I've only had this one for a few weeks, am still getting used to it. It's different than the other Olympus in that it doesn't take AA batteries and you have to hold it differently because of the flash and because it slides open whereas the other one opened when you pushed the button on top. That's the only problem I've had so far -- a couple of times I inadvertently shut it off by holding it wrong. I was pleased with the first roll of film I took with this camera -- only one blurred shot, and a nice close-up of a rose. Sometimes to get a close photo you need to use the zoom instead of just getting close. It always takes me awhile to get used to new stuff, but I think once I learn to use this camera I'll like it as much as the other. The zoom is cool and easy to use. Everyone says go digital, but with digital you lose the element of surprise and imperfection and that's what makes photography interesting. Plus all the girls see their picture and say, Ooh, I don't look good in that one, delete it! With this camera you can't delete so you don't end up tossing pictures that someone will like when they're old and gray and didn't recognize how good they looked at 23. I give this four stars -- I can't give it five stars because I haven't mastered it yet.
Super.......2005-08-16
This little beauty is bringing back my love of photos. I still enjoy film cameras as much as digital. This one has a great zoom and autofocus; so getting just the right shot is easy.

Amazon.com Review
The durable Olympus Stylus Epic offers full-featured, high-quality 35mm operation in an affordable package. With this ultra-portable point-and-shoot--one of the smallest 35mm cameras available--you'll never leave your camera at home.
While it's extraordinarily light and small, the Olympus Stylus Epic is heavy on styling and great features. It sports a miniature version of Olympus's signature clamshell sliding case, making it easy to turn the camera on and off. Its good-looking, high impact case is durable and splashproof.
The Olympus Stylus Epic offers the advanced features of Olympus's larger camera lines, including quartz date and time imprinting and a self timer. The Olympus Stylus Epic also has a whopping six flash modes, including automatic, red-eye reduction, and night scene.
The Olympus Stylus Epic was a pleasure to use--it was as small or smaller than many of the new Advanced Photo System (APS) cameras, but uses standard 35mm film. Its tapered design made it easy to slip in a pocket, and since it was little larger than a deck of cards, we found ourselves carrying it everywhere. If you hate lugging even a normal-size point-and-shoot around, the Olympus Stylus Epic has the portability you need.
Pros:
- Extremely lightweight and compact
- Durable construction
- Wide range of flash options
- Affordable
Cons:
- Battery compartment is hard to open

Very Good Within Its' Limitations, but not enough manual controls for me.........2007-08-31
I'd suggest finding an old Olympus XA in good condition instead of this mostly pre-programmed techno-cam, although it does have a sharp lens..and it's very small and light too. But the autofocus is a little touchy, and it wants to shoot at f2.8 in any kind of even slightly low light. With the XA, you can choose any aperture(or ISO!)you want, and the lens is even sharper..of course, you might have to use a tripod too, but the Stylus Epic won't really acknowledge that choice!
However, within its' parameters, it's a slick little camera, and you really shouldn't have to pay too much for it; refurbished ones go for under $50.
I'm a Japanese.......2007-06-01
Small, light, and strong.
The best for a tough traveling abroad.
It has no Panorama Mode, no Wireless Remote Control, no Pouch, and no CR123A Battery.
Then, it is simpler than Olympus µ[mju:]-II.
great little camera.......2005-10-11
I am absolutely NOT a photographer. The pix I took with this camera all came out excellent.
great pictures, but unreliable.......2005-08-05
Because of the lens, pictures come out sharp and beautiful. I've even took slides.
It's small and, so, it fits in your pocket. I take it kayakking.
But I find it unreliable. I've owned three and each time around the 1 year mark, the camera would inadvertently rewind the film as I was opening the shell.
I wish that there was a competitor. But there's really no other point and shoot with anything close to the sharpness that comes with an f2.8 lens.
Simple camera that takes great pictures!.......2005-06-27
As others have noted, this is a non-zoom camera with an excellent, fast lens. I bought it a month ago in preparation for an upcoming trip to Italy. As someone who learned to use a Pentax ME Super 25 years ago, I bought it mainly for the fast lens and small size. I also like that it has a slightly wider angle than my zoom compact camera -- great for both travel pictures and indoor group pictures. So far I've taken two rolls of film, in part to test all the features of the camera, and all of the pictures are excellent. I may add to this review after my Italy trip.
A few things I've noticed so far:
1. There are times when it uses the flash for outdoor pictures -- even when people are not in the picture. I assume it thinks it needs a fill flash in those situations. The pictures were all good, but it was a little disconcerting at first to see the flash go off on a sunny day.
2. When the date feature is used, the pictures have the date at the bottom right but not all the way in the corner. The date is smaller than I had with a Pentax IQZoom 140, and the red color sometimes blends in with the photo. I use the date feature only on one or two shots per roll to help me later remember the correct time frame for certain events.
3. Using just the standard flash setting (instead of the red-eye reduction setting), I haven't had any problems yet with red-eye. I should note, however, that many of the pictures were taken outdoors -- only a small number were taken indoors.
Overall, I'm very pleased with this camera so far.
Additional comments: I took 15 rolls of film during my trip to Italy, and I'm very pleased with the results!

Good camera.......2007-04-01
This is a good camera for the money......I use a 35mm at times instead of my digital...this is great for the price.
Surprised/disappointed with poor quality of pictures.......2007-02-16
I take a LOT of pictures of my 9 grandchildren and when I needed a new 35mm camera, this seemed ideal. However, I have been very disappointed with this camera's performance.
Outdoor pictures with no flash come out very well, but any photo requiring a flash does not. The center of the photo has some brightness to it, with the outside of the picture almost fading to black.
I have now gone to almost 100% digital shots.
Love the size!.......2006-06-23
I loved the size of this camera when I received it...I just tossed it in my purse and it's ready whenever I catch my two-year-old doing something cute! The picture quality was fine for me. I am slightly disappointed that it takes lithium batteries, but not enough to go to 4 stars.
Small Camera-average quality prints.......2006-03-04
This little camera has some nice features but really does not take any better pictures than my Fuji which was 1/2 the price.
There does seem to be a lot of difference in print quality depending on the finishing lab.
Fine camera for excellent price!.......2006-01-04
Fine 35 mm camera, simpicity of design; photos turned out beautiful. A camera which is very easy to use.

You can even print the date on your images with the date feature.

An Excellent Camera with a Great Telephoto Lens.......2003-08-03
The camera is compact, solid but light, and very easy to use. The images are very good to excellent. All the features seems to work just fine. The telephoto lens really brings images in. Its relative resistance to water-spray helps with boating photography. So far it has worked without a hitch. Though I own a digital camera, I believe that a film camera like this is still preferable for travel or for taking many pictures in a short time. All you have to do is plop a new film in and keep going, and then drop it off for development and you will end up with photos that will not fade out in a few years. I highly recommend this Olympus for an uncomplicated way of handling photography in an economical fashion and ending up with excellent results.
Very nice camera, BUT...........2003-02-17
We have bought six Olympus's for our large family of grown children. They are easy to use, relatively inexpensive, and compact. But, they have a major flaw. On three of the six cameras we have bought, the lins cover has broken and this prevents the camera from operating. The authorized service places in Houston Texas say they can not get the parts to repair this product deficiency.
Camera Broke on First Use.......2002-09-11
The lens cover broke on the first use!!! I will never buy an Olympus Product again!
Great photos, light weight.......2002-07-23
I bought this camera because of the light weight, the date/time stamp and the zoom capability, and I am very please with the purchase. We have two young kids and use the 115QD to take a lot of photos. The photo quality is very good (may be close to the Canon AE1 SLR that I used to use) under a lot of different lighting enviornments. So far we have no complaint about it, it is reliable and take great pictures.
Not Recommended.......2002-06-26
I loved the features on this camera when I first purchased it. However, on only the 2nd or 3rd roll of film, I noticed the pictures (particulary the zoom pictures) were fuzzy. Olympus diagnosed the problem as the lens being off center. Now only 2 years later, the lens cover has broken off and the motor is not working properly. I am now looking for a new camera, but definately not an Olympus.

Amazon.com Review
The Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom 80 offers advanced features and a zoom in a compact package, allowing you to get the close-up shots you want with the portability you need.
While the Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom 80 is one of the smallest zoom cameras available, it is heavy on styling and great features. Its miniature version of Olympus's signature clamshell sliding case makes it easy to turn the camera on and off, while offering protection against lens scratches. It comes in a good-looking and durable brushed stainless steel case that is splash-proof, so you can shoot pictures in all kinds of weather. The 35 to 80mm zoom lens is perfect for framing portraits, getting in on the action, and capturing faraway subjects.
The Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom 80 offers the advanced features of Olympus's larger camera lines, including quartz date and time imprinting, a self timer, and a handy panorama switch. The panorama switch lets you take panoramic photos on a roll of regular film. (You can take an entire panoramic roll as well.) The Olympus Stylus Epic also has a whopping six flash modes, including automatic, red-eye reduction, and night scene. It also has a useful Infinity mode, which sets the focus to let you take shots of distant landscapes and other subjects.
The Olympus Stylus Epic is a pleasure to use--it is as small or smaller than many of the new Advanced Photo System (APS) cameras, but still uses standard 35mm film.
Its tapered design made it easy to slip in a pocket, and since it is little larger than a deck of cards, we found ourselves carrying it everywhere. It's especially nice to have the zoom in such a compact camera.
Pros:
- Extremely lightweight and compact
- Durable construction

GREAT CAMERA.......2004-06-09
i see that many other people here have had problems with things breaking, but i've had this camera for three years and i've dropped it a lot, it's gotten submerged in water, and it's still great as ever. no problems with the color of the photos either.
great camera!
Light and Small, but not very sturdy.......2003-03-08
I've owned Nikons all my life, so maybe my standards are too high, but this camera has some problems. The camera I purchased came with an artistic condition called "Light leak", which puts a beautiful white arc on some of the pictures. It also takes very, very blue pictures. The shots look great on an island, but not in the snow. My boyfriend used this camera and I used my own Nikon to take the same shots, and his were much bluer. We both used Kodak film and got it developed at the same place. I also agree with the flimsy comment down below, and I don't understand how Olympus can claim this is a water resistant camera, if light is getting through to the film it can't be air-tight. Despite the drawbacks, it is the smallest and lightest 35mm camera I have ever seen. The slide-across lens cover is great, b/c it means you don't need a case for the camera. I'll be buying another one to replace this broken one, and hoping for the best.
The most stylish point and shoot........2001-12-13
Too bad Amazon didn't list all the features this camera has. It has lot more than the regular Stylus 35mm-80mm which is one of the best compact cameras. For those who wonder why this costs more!! Here are the reasons why this is lot better value than the regular 35mm-80mm Stylus.
1. Features the world's first Visual Confirmation Finder - press the shutter button and the viewfinder momentarily darkens to confirm the picture was taken. This unique SLR-like innovation is great in noisy environments.
2. At any point on the roll, you can easily switch to panoramic mode.
3. The six-mode variable power flash system reduces red eye, fills in shadows, improves night scenes and softens glare during close-ups.
4. Quartz date back.
5. Deluxe package includes leather case and lithium battery and comes in a nice Blue Package that looks great for offering as gift or to store the camera.
It's the best point & shoot zoom camera in the market yet.......2001-09-09
Being an ardent Olympus fan I was sold out by the advertisement hoopla - 'world's smallest and technically advanced P/S, I first bought the Epic dlx (fixed focus) camera. I was surprised by its superb performance and have been thoroughly enjoying it. Technically, no body can beat it quality optics, all-weather construction, solid feel design and above all, its size. Later, I ended up with the 140 zoom camera and enjoying it even more. Wish these 'minis' were out when I bought my first SLR, Olympus OM-PC in the eighties. Being convinced by its performance, many of my friends have purchased these cameras as handy, second units for casual shooting.
Pretty good, but it's flimsy........2001-07-30
I bought the Olympus Stlyus Epic one month ago, because it was the smallest 35mm camera I could find, it seemed sturdy, and it was weatherproof. I give it only 3 stars because after one month of use & carrying, it started to fall apart... the shutter-release button fell off, the flash started to become loose, and chunks of the case chipped off. I was very disappointed by how flimsy it was, I've used other (cheaper) cameras in the same travelling conditions, and they held up fine. Despite the fact that it fell apart on me, I was very pleased with it. The 38-80 Zoom was perfect, almost all of my pictures came out bright & clear (even indoors), and the controls are easy to figure out. Even though it takes good pictures, I regret buying the Olympus Stylus Epic because it fell apart after only one month, and I would not recommend it to others.

It very cool.......2004-12-02
This is a very cool overall camera! The zoom is average, but the picture quality is AMAZING!!! I use the cheapest film around and my brother is a camera freak and my camera still takes better pictures than his! I have had it for 5 years and I LOVE IT!!!
If you want a nice camera with great quality

Sliding door failed after minimal usage, otherwise great.......2004-06-16
I really loved this camera, but the sliding "door" broke and wouldn't close after only a few months of minimal usage. I don't know if I got a lemon, or what. The camera was never dropped or otherwise abused. I had had another Olympus for years with the same design, that worked great--it's really easy to get quick shots when you can slide off the lens cover and turn on the camera all in one quick motion ; I will most likely try another one even after my bad experience with this one. I hope that they have solved this issue, if it was widespread--at least one other reviewer mentioned the same problem...
perfect point and click camera.......2003-10-22
The size and design of this camera make it ideal for what it is designed for. It takes great pictures in light and dark (though it's better at outdoor pictures) and it fits easily into your pocket. It opens quickly with one hand; no fumbling around with a lens cap. It focuses quickly so you can take a shot from a closed position very quickly.
The only thing worth noting is that this is a point and click camera. If you want to control exposure, shutter speed, etc. or play with macro, this is not your camera.
Handy Dandy Camera.......2003-08-16
We purchased this camera to take on a European vacation. It is very easy to use and the pictures, for the most part, turned out well. I only wish I had taken along an old 35mm SLR I've had for 20 years so I could have used a wider variety of lenses. This camera, for all of its capabilities, did a very good job.

Product Description
Precision-crafted and styled for success, the Stylus Epic has an ultra-compact, all-weather body so it's easy to carry and easy to hold, and a high-resolution 35mm f2.8 lens to help you capture high-quality images. Fully automatic operation, intelligent variable-power flash, and lots more of the advanced features that have made Stylus cameras famous worldwide are included. The powerful six-mode flash lets your pictures come out just the way you saw them. Auto color-balancing fires automatically when your subject is backlit or under artificial light so your pictures display more natural color tones. And red-eye reduction helps the subject's eyes adjust to the light level of the flash to minimize the red-eye effect. There's also Variable-power flash, Night Scene Flash, Fill-In Flash, and Flash Off to help ensure your pictures are properly lit."Of extra fine quality" is the dictionary meaning given to the word "deluxe", and that's exactly what the Deluxe series of Stylus cameras embody. As all Stylus models do, the Deluxe series makes photography simple by offering great features in a stylish, compact camera. But they also include some "extra features" that help take that photographic simplicity one step further. The Deluxe series offers both Standard and Panorama operation. Depending on your preference, you can capture photographs in standard form or you can take panorama shots, a great tool when shooting landscapes or group photos. And the Deluxe lets you switch back and forth to the panorama mode at any point on the film roll, so you can get panorama images back in 4" x 11.5" prints. Although every model in the Stylus family is visually appealing, the Deluxe series is especially stylish thanks to the elegant gold detailing on the camera body. This gold color gives the Deluxe series an aura of class and sophistication, just like the impressive features it contains.

You won't be disappointed.......2004-08-24
This is by far the best point and shoot camera I've ever owned. It has consistently given me good results. In fact, next to my SLR with a Nikon prime lens, it's hard to tell the difference which pictures came from the $350 camera and which came from the $79 camera. I keep this little gem in my purse and I have captured so many little opportunities with my child that I know I would have missed because it's just not as feasible to lug around my SLR gear. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
Best point and shoot camera.......2004-01-28
The photos from this camera turn out very sharp. I used the first roll to take some pictures of my daughter. None of the photos came bad. The autofocus works perfect. I have used other point and shoot camera in the past, but this is simply the best.
The best point and shoot camera for the money. Learn how to.......2002-01-13
I can't add too much more to the positive comments other users have already posted on this little gem. It's the best point and shoot camera for the money. The fast f2.8 lens and shutter speed range from 4 seconds to 1/1000 sec. is something that you'd be hard pressed to find in any other point and shoot camera, especially in this price range.
Now for the tips:
-Turn off the flash while indoors. Your people pictures will look very colorful and nice.
-Force the flash on when outdoors. This will provide some nice fill flash and your people pictures will have their faces exposed nicely.
-Use the spot metering and focusing mode. Point the center crosshairs at what you want to focus and meter upon and then recompose your shot while holding the shutter button down halfway.
-When shooting at an event, keep the clam shell case open. The camera resets to full auto mode every time you close it. So, set it once and then just leave it open, sliding it into a shirt pocket or something. This way, it remains set and ready all night.
Perfect--absolutely amazing lens for a small camera.......2001-07-26
This is by far the best point-n-shoot camera available today at any price. It's small, stylish, and most importantly, it's got a phenomenally fast and tack-sharp lens. Most people don't take lens speed into account when purchasing a small camera, which I think is an tremendous oversight. The Stylus Epic, with its fast aperture of 2.8, will make you look like a pro--even if you only take pictures at family reunions. Plus, you'll be able to take pictures in low-light situations without resorting to the mood killing flash. Believe me, you WILL see the difference.
I don't recommend any of the Stylus Epic models with the zoom feature. They all have inferior lenses and the lens is too slow, except for casual picture taking in bright light. If you want closer, take a few steps up.
Yes, there are smaller and arguably "cuter" cameras out there (the Elph comes to mind), but keep in mind that they are all APS format cameras! APS, as we know, is a giant leap down from 35mm.
Super Camera.......2001-06-16
What can one really say about this camera, not much, it is absolutely a wonderful camera, no ifs, buts or maybe's
