Amazon.com Product Description
Stylish and utterly professional, the Sony Vaio PCG-V505EX is a lightweight notebook PC--only 4.39 pounds--that's geared for business and mobility. Thanks to the Intel Centrino processor, its enhanced battery life will keep you productive even on long flights. It features a built-in wireless LAN (802.11b), a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive, spacious 60 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a good range of pre-installed Sony digital media software. Stepping up in price, the Sony Vaio PCG-V505EXP offers a 54g wireless LAN.
The Basics
- Hard Drive: Though not world-beating in size, the 60 GB enhanced-IDE hard drive (4200 RPM) offers more than enough storage capacity for road warriors.
- Processor: The 1.5 GHz Pentium M processor is near the top of the speed range compared with other Centrino notebooks (with current speed topping out at 1.7 GHz). Because of its design, the Intel Pentium M gets more done per clock tick than a Mobile Intel Pentium 4, thus providing the discrepancy in GHz measurement (i.e., 1.7 versus 3.2). The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies--ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max. It also has a 512 KB L2 cache and a 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB) speed.
- Memory: The PCG-V505EX comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz)--a good start for power users--with a maximum memory expansion up to 2.05 GB (2 x 1024 MB).
- CD/DVD Drive: It comes equipped with a combo DVD/CD-RW drive, which enables you to play DVD-ROM discs and DVD movies as well as burn data and record music to CD discs. The CD-RW drive has 24x write, 10x rewrite, and 24x read speeds.
- Keyboard & Mouse:
Sound and Graphics
The installed ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 IGP video/graphics card is a relatively strong 3-D graphics renderer, and it has 32 MB of shared video memory. The 12.1-inch XGA TFT active matrix LCD has a native 1024 x 768 pixel display. It also has an sound card that's integrated into the main board, and offers built-in stereo speakers.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The PCG-V505EX has an Intel Pro-Wireless 2100 integrated wireless LAN that connects using the 802.11b wireless standard, which is not exactly in step with the latest in wireless networking--54g, or 802.11g. You get a decent--but not overpowering--offering of connectivity options, including both high-speed USB 2.0 and FireWire:
- 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 RGB monitor port
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II)
- 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
- 1 Memory Stick slot (Memory Stick Pro compatible)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Preloaded System and Software
The PCG-V505EX comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). It also is loaded with a bevy of Sony multimedia software: PictureGear Studio (digital photo), DVgate Plus (digital video), and SonicStage (digital music). Other preloaded software includes InterVideo WinDVD and Norton Internet Security Center 7.
Dimensions and Weight
Measuring 1.38 x 10.9 x 9.54 inches (H x W x D) and weighing just 4.39 pounds, the PCG-V505EX is easily portable.
Power
The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery (PCGA-BP2V) offers between 2.5 and 6.5 hours of life with typical usage.
What's in the Box
This package contains the Sony Vaio PCG-V505EX notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions.

Junk and More More - For Fred Sanford's Backyard.......2007-01-27
I am an IT Person for a midsized company. Back In 2002 I decided to buy about 12 of these PCG V505's. They have been the unmitigated bane of my existence for almost 5 years. As you can see by other reviews the hard drives (which are made by toshiba ) go bad. That is the least of the troubles. The biggest problem with these units is the pcmcia slot that is almost guaranteed to go bad- especially using 32 bit Verizon cards. Of the 12 we bought 8 of them within as little as a year had bad slots which make them unusable for portable use- as the slot doesn't work. I found a company called Elan Digital systems that sold me 5 PCM to USB card converters that, with some tweaking can get you back on line- but for the $249.00 I'm not sure if its worth it. Also the keybaords have flimsy keys which have very often broken off, save for the fact that I have a few on the junkpile to pick from, a new keybaord is $95 from which you must carefully pick off the bad keys and replace your keyboard. In addition, SONY in all its brilliance, designed the spare RAM chip slot so that its too close to the back and is not always fully protected fron Static electricity. Of course you'll find this out after sitting the laptop on staticy pants or A Hotel Bedspread and shortly thereafter the computer locks up. This again has happened with at least 6 of 12 computers we own. New Chips at sometimes 100.00 a pop add up quickly. I haven't even mentioned the clueless people at SONY who claim they know nothing about BAD PCM slots and of which there is no mention of the problem on the search part of their tech support.
All in all everyone who thinks this these are great beacuse of size and weight well, take my advice: think twice. They are and have been my nightmare and truly the happiest day of my life will be when the last one hits the scrap heap. Try Averatec's 2150 half the price and non of the BS with SONY.
Yep, Hard Drive Died...beware.......2006-12-23
Have been pretty happy with this for two years -- lightweight, reasonable performance. I take it with me everywhere.
Hard drive gave signs of dying, and finally gave up the ghost this week. I would probably give this three stars because it gave me a relatively useful life, but the Sony support has been very poor. Review sites like this make it clear that hard drive failures are common for this product, but Sony buries and obscures hard drive assistance online. Frustrating.
Hard drive, sound card, CDRW/DVD drive failures..........2006-11-28
Purchased for my wife about 2.5 years ago. Not a bad little computer--save for about one year after purchasing the speakers quit working--which Sony fixed quickly as it was still under warranty. Then about 6 months ago the DVD combo-drive began to fail. Most recently, (two weeks ago) the hard drive has failed completely. (with some warning, but I was unable to back up some of the data before complete failure)
Bottom line: Wife loved the computer--it was light, small, and had great battery life. However, ours had its share of problems and there are many people who seem to have similar problems with hard drive.
Nice, but..........2006-11-08
I can't complain too much, as I got this computer two years ago for around $1400 on sale, which seems to be less than most paid. Mostly it's been a great computer, long battery life, and the screen is still in great shape after 2 years. I haven't had any problems with the case scuffing, and I just use a normal laptop bag to carry it around. However, the hard drive did fail right at 15 months. In my case it was the read heads (which seems to be the common failure mode), but the problem was slow enough to develop I had time to move all of my data off the drive before it completely died. I just recently replaced it with a relatively cheap 80GB 5400 RPM drive and everything works great, plus it runs faster than it ever did with the original 4200 RPM drive that was installed. If you get this computer, do yourself a favor and replace the HD with a 5400 RPM drive, it makes what's already (still) a good computer even a little better.
Sony Vaio Never More.......2006-05-23
I bought this notebook two years before. This is the time your hard drive will last. I know five other people that has had the same problem. If you are paying more for a Sony Vaio thinking that you are buying a better product, be cautious.
Amazon.com Product Description
Futuristically styled in a sleek silver chassis, the Toshiba Satellite M35-S320 Notebook PC is a nifty amalgamation of the features most important to the majority of portable computer users. Powerful but not at the expense of added weight and sporting such amenities as integrated wireless connectivity and a widescreen display, this is a great unit for personal, leisure and midlevel business applications.
Measuring 14.1 by 10.6 by 1.4 inches and weighing just 6.2 pounds, the Satellite M35-S320 Notebook is rather wide but comfortably slim and quite portable. Toshiba has based the system on Intel's Centrino technology, whereby three interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full MB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- work together to keep your notebook lightweight, wirelessly connected, power efficient, and faster than its rated CPU speed might indicate. Driven by a quick 1.5 GHz Pentium M CPU, 512 MB RAM memory (expandable to 2 full GB) and a nVidia GeForce FX graphics controller with 32 MB of dedicated video memory, the unit is ready for most typical 2-D and 3-D tasks, though it may have trouble smoothly displaying the sophisticated 3-D imaging of today's most complex three-dimensional games and graphic design suites.
The system's large 60 GB hard disk offers enough storage space for all your regular data and a substantial library of multimedia files too, and its CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive allows you to listen to and burn audio CDs, archive data to durable digital media, and play DVD movies. DVD burning is not supported. Other welcome amenities include a generous 15.4-inch display in DVD-friendly widescreen 16:9 format, an 85-key keyboard with 12 hotkeys, a TouchPad pointing device with scroll function, and integrated harman/kardon stereo speakers.
With the Satellite M35-S320 Notebook, communication options are virtually limitless. In environments with wired connections, you can select from a 56K dial-up modem or high-speed 10/100 Ethernet LAN. When hardwiring is a problem, you can stay in touch via integrated IntelPRO/Wireless 2100 LAN. Other key components include three fast USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external plug and play devices such as scanners and digital cameras, an S-Video TV--out, and an infrared port for wireless communication with PDAs and the like.
Product Description
Whether sitting on your couch or in your office, the Satellite M35 Series with Intel Centrino mobile technology incorporates convenient productivity features ready for any business or home. Combined with an enhanced battery life and increased performance packaged in an eye-catching silver design, the Satellite M35 Series is the notebook you want for both work and play.

Power problems, but otherwise a great computer.......2006-08-15
I've had this model for about 2 years and am generally satisfied with it with a few exceptions. The screen suddenly goes black from time to time (irrespective of the energy-saving settings), it gets burning hot after a short period of time (nearly melted a pen sitting next to it), and the battery is a real pain because it has to be plugged in after a short time (20 minutes or less). I've taken care of the battery as recommended, so that's not the cause of the short-life problem. As another reviewer pointed out, the speakers could have greater volume (to hear over the fan, lol). Also, if it could be less heavy in the ol' briefcase, that'd be nice... it's a bit cumbersome. It also seems to be slow opening programs as simple as Word and Excel. That being said, it's easy to use the wireless connection, the screen clarity is great and it's otherwise a responsive little tool. I wouldn't pay again what I paid for it in '04, but if you can get a decent discount on it, go with it.
Very good but one problem........2005-05-25
I think that this is a very good computer, matter of fact im using it right now but when used for 15 min it gets hot, and I mean very hot. I burned myself using it and forgetting that it gets hot. Except for that little detail, overall I have never had any viruses and I think that this computer will last me a long time.
no regrets.......2005-01-08
I bought this machine to replace my sony vaio pcg-grz630 that had some sort of unfixable issue that caused it to turn off and then only turn back on occasionally if you held your breath and tossed salt over your left shoulder while saying chants to the old-gods. My experience with Sony support was the stuff of nightmares. I never did talk to anyone who could give me any answers despite hours spent in frustration. My vaio was a "better" machine if you just look at the specs. It had a bigger hard-drive, more memory, was faster, and more expensive, but my toshiba outperforms it. Here's how:
1. When I play dvds everything is smooth. With my vaio, I had to turn the screen specs all the way down in order to get it sort of smooth
2. The battery lasts forever and the power management settings are easy as pie and very relavant. ie. dvd playback, presentation, long life, etc. I live in Florida and during all the hurricane power outtages we watched dvds on my laptop. It charged quickly in the car and would play nearly 2 entire movies before needing a charge. I could use my sapphion external battery and charge it in the car and have continious laptop use with the power out. The vaio used so much power that my external battery would not work with it and on airplane rides, had such short life that I couldn't even watch a movie if I started with a full charge. Frustrating.
3. All laptops get hot...fact of life. If you want a cool laptop, don't turn the thing on, but this one has little feet that keep it up off of surfaces a little and it doesn't get as hot as that vaio did, not by a long shot. If you are worried about generating too much heat, for instance if you are outside on a hot summer day, there are power settings that can minimize the problem.
4. The vaio had a 2.4 gig processor, the toshiba a 1.5, but I can't seem to tell the difference, not even when I use my demanding statistics software.
5. This baby is light and thin and very sexy looking.
6. Best built in laptop speakers I ever heard.
7. That volume wheel on the front is just plain handy
8. Built in wireless with a handy little switch for turning it on and off in case you aren't using it and want to conserve power.
9. the secure digital slot is awesome. I have a camera, an mp3 player, and a pda that also use sd.
10. An IR port. I can hotsync my pda wirelessly without having to deal with the configuration nightmare that is bluetooth. IR is a bit slow for an initial hotsync...I recommend the wire for that, but for the frequent calendar, notes, memos, address book hotsyncs, it is perfect.
11. This is a big one for me...there is a number you can call if you have questions or problems with your computer. Sony goes to a lot of trouble to make themselves hard to get ahold of. I will never purchase another sony product as long as I live no matter how great it is for that reason alone. When you are writing a thesis and you have deadlines and your computer screws up, you don't need the crap they put you through. Toshiba provides you with stickers with phone numbers on them for you to put on the bottom of your computer.
The downside--2 of the 3 usb ports are in an unfortunate location. They are on the right side toward the front, which means that if you have limited space and a usb mouse, the 2 front ports put wires right where you want your usb mouse or wacom pad or number pad to sit. I usually plug my targus hub into the rearmost port (also on the right side, but away from the other 2 all the way in the back) and plug everything into it to avoid this frustration.
Fan is very noisy. .......2004-08-02
Fan is bit too noisy. You can hear it start and stop. May be thats why this laptop has HK speakers (although the speakers can be better!). Laptop becomes very hot if used for more than 15-20 mins. I ordered one from Amazon. It arrived after a week, but with some dents on the topside. So I am returning the product back to Amazon. The design is great! It looks stylish (looks better than Thinkpad), not very heavy (~6 lbs), awesome screen!
A huge harddrive (60GB), good memory (512 MB RAM) but no DVD-RW drive, which is ok for me, since it has CD-RW. For a student like me, who does only weekend travels, this laptop is just perfect, except the NOISY fan, which is really irritating sometimes. May be Toshiba should supply some earplugs with this model!
Oh lord!!.......2004-07-03
Toshiba Satellite M35-S320 doesn't dissapoint me at all. Centrino really works, allowing me to keep on working for hours. The battery can last up to 3.5 hrs and it can work well despite the heat that is building up!! have fun watching movies and playing games!!! the only bad thing: the volume is too soft whille watching movie and a bit too big and heavy!!!

I did some research before I chose this unit and I don't regret it. This one has great picture quality. It lets you easyly choose between, text, standard, movie, gaiming and photo modes which really make a difference. In photo mode for example, the pictures look way better.
Ignore the bad reviews about the glossy screen. I have a HP Dv4000 laptop with glossy screen so I knew it would not be a problem. It makes your images look so much better. Just adjust the light in your office and enjoy better color and contrast it gives you.
This is a great LCD, why four stars then? if only this monitor had height adjustment! That is the only thing I am missing. I put it side by side with a Dell 1907fp to use dual mons and I had to bring the dell half a foot down to make it level with the NEC. The dell has excellent adjustments and beautiful design too. I have to hack the NEC somehow cuz I wanna keep it.
Best monitor found.......2007-06-08
Monitor is almost too nice. I will have to adjust to reflect printed photo's actual quality before printing them out. I had to turn the brightness down. Very easy installation. Took out of the box, plugged in and away I went! I love this monitor now that I have more space in the cabinet. Swivels and tilts to view better. Price was amazingly low for this top-notch brand. I'd buy another if needed. Have told others when they are in the market for a new monitor, to find this one for the best price. Amazon has done it again!
Crisp and Clean.......2007-05-19
Amazing deal I saw on Amazon and could not pass this up. Had to buy 2 more to go with my other 3. All you have to do is turn down factory brightness to 30% or sow and you should not go blind. Very easy on the eyes and remids me of the old t.v. style monitors with glass fronts. Finally someone was listening to what a customer wants. Dont buy big just buy 2 or more and upgrade video card to work both on one computer. You get 20% more done instead of switching between windows. Do not buy if this price is over 250 thou. I just looked at it was 600 + - come on.
great monitor.......2007-05-09
I was trying to get a very good monitor at a reasonable cost. I saw the review on the multisync nec gx2 and was impressed, however it was going to cost almost $400 to purchased it and ship it to jamaica through ebiz.
The price fell to 235 and i purchase it.
I have it over two months know and I love it. The screen quality is excellent The reflective screen is beautiful to look at on or off..
I purchase kworld 1440 tv tuner and now my monitor is an impressive lcd tv and monitor.
The monitor allow you to easily adjust the screen for text, movie or photo viewing. Each setting is perfect.

This one is awesome. My husband and I are blown away be the clarity and ease of use and set-up. We have paired with with a Lenovo T60 computer with the mini-docking station. The monitor has several additional USB hubs and a vacation switch.
