2 out of 5 stars shoddy.......2003-05-01

I suppose this might be a cool device if it actually functioned properly. Almost from the second I unwrapped it there were problems - it freezes every other day. I don't know how much data I've lost cumulatively. I don't even want a replacement, I want a different model. I'll even take a "lesser" model. If Palm support fails me (which I hear is likely) I'm going back to handspring.

As a New York Criminal and Divorce attorney, I swear the 1-705 is
guilty of being the best friend you can have out there in the field. The ability to read Excel & Word docs is a godsend, and between the power to remote access the internet, and the freebie downloads available for a palm, who needs a laptop? This beauty and a cell phone, and you've got all the equipment you need to be a successful road warrior. You are hereby summoned to appear with your i-705 and run your business on the run.

1 out of 5 stars Inferior.......2003-02-10

I received the i705 for Christmas. I have had nothing but trouble with the product. The Infrared radio didn't work. I tried for several weeks! The absolute worst part , however, was Palm's customer service. If you think they are out there to help you, you are wrong. They agreed (after several phone calls), to replace the unit. This was a new unit that they finally agreed to replace. After reading the fine print, I realized they were going to send me a reconditioned unit, and by now, there are better products on the market. Curiously enough, the unit still hasn't arrived. Additionally, you need to sign up for their service, which is pricey. If I have to have a reconditoned unit, I may as well have the top of the line reconditioned PDA. The price on this unit has come down considerably, I guess there is a reason. Oh, and the customer service department may be suffering from post Christmas stress, as they were a bit touchy, to say the least.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of engineering, so so service, though.......2003-01-25

This is a great PDA! Elegant design, fast, practical, the best among all models before Tungsten. The best value for your money, as well. I used to have a Palm VIIx, another great PDA, but I decided to switch to this model mostly because of the, supposedly better, wireless capabilities (internet access, even Google!), AOL instant messenger, e-mail, etc., the amazing Documents To Go program, and also for the fabulous expansion card with the Merriam-Webster dictionary! I have only two (major) complaints: the wireless service is TOO expensive and the MultiMail 1.2 e-mail program takes longer than with the Palm VIIx, let alone it gobbles very quickly your monthly allotment of 100K. In less than a month, just using e-mail, it has already used up 163K! And to think that with my Palm VIIx, I barely used 40K each month... If the wireless service were less expensive and more efficient (there is a number of error messages each time) this Palm would be, hands down, the best of all. I will continue to enjoy my Palm i705 minus the wireless capabilities. I don't want to talk about the old fashioned, low-resolution screen, practically the same that came with the original Palm Pilot. The Casio Clié, if not for the lack of wireless functions, beats easily this model. And this is said by a seasoned Palm fan.

2 out of 5 stars Too Old.......2004-09-10

This used to be a great device. However, as of Aug. 31, 2004, Palm is discontinuing their Palm.Net wireless service. As the Palm VII cannot be reconfigured to use a different service, the vast majority of its functionality is now gone. If you just need a basic handheld, the Palm VII will still work in this capacity, but there are other devices which work just as well for a lower cost.

1 out of 5 stars unless you own stock in Duracell forget it.......2003-05-07

this was the second Palm I owned, and was a closeout model, and it was terrible. Battery life is non-existent unless one week counts. In fact was away from unit for a week and not only were the batteries completely dead, but lost all data. I love the convenience of a PDA, just not THIS PDA

5 out of 5 stars Socks knocked off !!.......2002-06-10

Product works great. It replaces one that I had for 2 years which I dropped and shattered the screen on. I ordered from the vendor on Friday afternoon. On the next Monday morning the PDA was delivered to my office, with a new set of alkalines installed. I was synched up within 5 minutes of opening the box! Great service from the vendor..at regular ground shipping rates. "Thanks"

5 out of 5 stars The computer wiz.......2002-01-31

This is a great product. I loved it from day one, and I have been using for about 1 1/2 years now. It may take a week or two to get used to handwriting if you have never done it on any other device before, but once that hurdle is passed, it is a minature computer at the palm of your hand!

3 out of 5 stars Hmm..........2001-12-03

This has the potential to be a good device, but lost a lot. The palm VII can connect to the internet with pretty good rates, but the most it can do is webclipping apps, like Wall Street Journal. While it can probably do more if you connect using a manual connection, you have to go through a lot. Also nagging is the fact that it only has 2mb of memory, not allowing you to store lots of programs. However, this can be a good thing, because you don't load lots of useless programs on. The contrast nobbie in the back got annoying because it was hard to use, but it never got accidentally adjusted like the palm Vx could.
The palm VII is for the net user, but if you aren't going to use it for the internet, buy an m100, same as this only round and modem-free. (I happen to like the boxy shape of the VII.)

Amazon.com Review

It's always a wonderful feeling when gadgets work seamlessly and live up to their plug-and-play promise. The Palm portable keyboard is such a gadget. It's possibly the best hardware add-on for Palm devices currently on the market--it installs easily and helps you increase your Palm productivity.

Installation of the Keyboard application onto the Palm handheld is easily accomplished during a typical HotSync. (To prepare the app for HotSync, simply add it to the Install Tool on Windows, or the Install Handheld Files in the Mac HotSync Manager.)

Once the app was installed, we were ready for testing at a meeting. We sauntered in and unfolded the keyboard in a flourish--clicking it open from its folded position, laying it flat, sliding the keyboard parts together (it's broken into thirds for folding), and attaching our m100 in a matter of seconds. The attendees at the meeting were suitably wide eyed and impressed with our James Bondian device. (This model of the Palm Portable Keyboard also accommodates Palm VII and Palm III series handhelds--even the Palm IIIc. A separate model is available for the Palm V.)

But the Palm portable keyboard is more than a flashy toy--it's a productivity juggernaut that has some of the best keyboard action we've ever experienced. The keys are not soft and mushy like other keyboards we've tested for handhelds. Instead, they're a bit on the tight side but with a lot of give. Also, the more we used the keyboard, the more we found ourselves shying away from tapping the screen to navigate through a screen or perform actions such as switching applications or opening up the Details section of a Memo or Address Book contact. With the Palm keyboard, you can do virtually all your work without taking your fingers off the keyboard.

The keyboard includes custom buttons for the built-in Palm applications (Date Book, Address, To Do List, and Memo Pad). Several keys have added functions, such as the ability to open up the Apps screen, scroll through a screen, or turn on the backlight. You can also customize your own shortcuts list of applications loaded onto your Palm handheld. This is done using the Keyboard app, and you can assign the number keys 1 through 9 (but not 0). After making our designations, pressing Cmd-1 immediately took us to our favorite diversion--YahtC--during a lull in our meeting.

All told, we have nothing but praise for the Palm portable keyboard, not just for the ease of inputting text but also for changing the way we use our Palm handheld. Since we started using the keyboard, we now often travel without any laptop, confident that any degree of writing or note taking during meetings can be handled by our Palm alone. (It should also be noted that we typed this review on our m100 while sitting comfortably at our local coffee shop.) If you are a heavy Palm user, the Palm portable keyboard is an essential and very cool tool. --Agen G.N. Schmitz
