Amazon.com Review
Palm's simple yet elegant operating system has long been a shining light in the world of PDAs. The good news on the Palm m505 is that the Palm OS still offers a wide array of tools to gather your personal and business data in a great computing environment. Unfortunately, the most touted aspect of the Palm m505--its color screen--is a disappointment.
Turning it on for the first time, we wondered if we had received the monochrome version Palm m500 handheld--the screen was dark and barely visible in our moderately lit office. We fumbled around for the contrast preference, but couldn't find it. In fact, the Palm m505 has no way to adjust contrast other than to turn on the backlight. Only with the backlight activated could we actually discern the icon and screen colors, and even then the LCD screen seemed muted.
On side-by-side tests with the Handspring Visor Prism, its main color competition, the Palm m505 was lacking in brightness and crispness--despite both handhelds' having 16-bit display support that can show up to 65,000 colors.
The reason for this seems to be that Palm has sacrificed brilliance for energy efficiency. The Palm m505's rechargeable battery does, indeed, keep its charge with "normal" usage (estimated by Palm at 40 minutes per day) for about three weeks. However, with the mandatory use of the m505's backlight, we found the battery needed more frequent charging. Luckily, charge time in the included HotSync cradle/recharger is quite short.
The basic Palm applications in OS version 4.0--Address, Date Book, Memo Pad, and To Do List--remain largely unchanged, with a few tweaks here and there. For instance, the Date Book application now includes a screen view with a list of the appointments and to-do items for a particular date. And like the m100 series, the Note Pad has been added for doodling and scribbling handwritten notes (instead of writing longer tomes in the Memo Pad using the Palm's Graffiti alphabet).
Palm has collected a number of bonus software titles that you can easily add to the m505 without denting much of the 8 MB of memory, including AvantGo, which downloads Web news and content from a variety of sources (enabling us to keep up with Aussie Rules Football scores). The biggest test for the color screen came with PhotoSuite, an image viewing app that displays a range of image-file formats downloaded from your PC. We found the color depth to be quite good, but the screen's lack of brightness made the images look rather muddy.
Additionally, several connectivity applications from Palm's Mobile Internet Kit are provided, including the Web Clipping app for viewing Web content built specifically for Palm viewing and MultiMail SE for accessing e-mail. And, of course, there's the highly touted expansion slot for SecureDigital cards and MultiMediaCards, allowing you to add memory, content, and functionality. Unfortunately, at the time of this review, we were unable to test any of the cards offered by Palm.
With its curved angles, thin design, and light weight, the Palm m505 closely resembles its predecessor, the Palm V series handheld. And like that model, the m505 feels very comfortable both in the palm of your hand and resting in your pocket. Also, with the Palm m505's new 33 MHz Dragonball VZ processor, switching applications seemed much more immediate.
The siren song of the new m500 series is indeed seductive, and Palm has done well to streamline its basic repertoire and add some tasty new notes to the mix. However, the Palm m505 is ultimately a disappointment due to its underwhelming color display. If you're having trouble getting this song out of your head, the Palm m500 handheld (with all the functions of the Palm m505 but with a monochrome screen) should keep your toes tapping just fine. --Agen G.N. Schmitz
Pros:
- Faster processor
- Classic Palm styling--contoured design is comfortable to hold
- Good range of additional software, from Internet connectivity to e-book reader
- New expansion slot takes industry standard SecureDigital cards and MultiMediaCards
Cons:
- Color screen is rather dim and ultimately disappointing
- Backlighting must be turned on to see the color screen, wearing down the rechargeable battery
- Expandability via SecureDigital and MMC cards limited by current offerings

Good Buy.......2005-09-04
I bought this new to replace my Palm organizer that was stolen a few years ago. I haven't had any problems with it and I've had it for about three years now.
2nd Palm, 2.75 Years w/m505.......2004-08-13
I've owned this since late 2001. It replaced a 4-year-old Palm Pilot Professional (1MB mono, AAA batts). It has been very solid for me. I am hooked on the simplicity of the Palm OS. I don't need a notebook computer in my pocket. I need an all-in-one-place-and-go-anywhere life organizer--calendar, address book, Scrabble (extra!), with ability to sync to desktop @ home and @ work; beam entries between this and my wife's m130. I also have add-on of SplashID for password-protected storage of PINs, passwords, web-logins, and other sensitive/private info. As a result, every piece of critical info (13+ categories of addresses, work/personal appointments, etc.) is always at my fingertips, and always safely backed-up on the Palm Desktop.
Battery life has been fine for my usage levels. Backlight is dimmer than newer models, but it does the job (I'm not playing DVD movies, for cryin' out loud).
Only problem I'm currently having is that a small section of the screen (approximately a .5"x.5" square) has "died" within the past 6 months--losing all touch sensitivity....so I have to work around that.
My office IT guy says PalmOne will come out with next generation of models this fall, so I'll wait for that selection before replacing this one.
Perfect for almost anybody!.......2004-06-25
The Palm M505 is a neat little PDA. It's features are perfect for students to business people. There are many positive elements to this little Palm.
The Palm M505 is the perfect companion for a student. It's small size and low price makes it perfect for somebody on the run and someone in need of a durable, compact Palm Pilot. In it's life, my Palm has been dropped numerous times, gotten soaked in water, and gotten thrown into the bottom of a backpack countless times. Again, it is perfect for anyone in need of durable database.
AWESOME CHRISTMAS PRESENT!!.......2004-01-04
I got this awesome palm piolot with a keyboard and it is great! I bought games and put a cool "Documents to Go" program on it. I write stories a lot so I can use it for that, and I can also write school things on it if I'm in the car and my handwriting won't be sloppy! This is very cool. I am 12 1/2 and this is one of the best palms I have ever used. You should buy it!
Time Bomb.......2003-07-22
I got this model for myself because at the time, it was the best model available. It worked really well for quite a while, and I even told my dad to get it for my mom for Christmas. So far, she has had no problems (knock on wood). Mine bit the dust earlier this year after over a year of problem-free functioning. It just quit syncing. Nothing changed at all. It just stopped syncing one day. I went through numerous attempts to solve the issue through email technical support with Palm. Nothing worked. I didn't want to call them because I didn't want to spend money on tech support. Turns out they won't charge you because they know there is a problem with the unit! They sent me a reset card which didn't help. I called them again and they were going to make me jump through more hoops. I pulled out the attitude and said NO WAY. They finally agreed to take the unit back for repair. They turned around the unit quickly and it was fine for a couple months, and it just quit on me again. They are obviously having VERY serious issues with this model, and I feel as if I have suggested a time bomb for my mother. It's not worth the hassle to get this Palm. I don't know if all Palms are this problematic, but I would avoid any Palm model that begins with a "5." I'm sure they are all duds, and once you begin to rely on a PDA there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING more bothersome than having to go through these issues. You are left without a PDA for who-knows-how-long and you feel vulnerable. It's just not worth it.

Customer Reviews:
Built like a tank.......2006-04-03
After throwing away my Tungsten E (total junk). A friend gave me his old Palm m500 which he never used.
As far as features go it's a total downgrade from the Tungsten E, but as far as reliability goes....this one shines!
I've had no problems whatsoever with this thing, I use it mostly as a notepad so I've never had a need for all the bells and whistles that the current generation of PDA's offer.
The m500 can go a week on one charge, compared to the Tungsten E which was begging for a recharge after one day! BLEH!
This also features a different kind of screen, one that doesn't require those stupid 'screen protectors'. HOORAY!
I thought perhaps this was made back when Palm cared about it's customers, but looking at the other reviews here makes me think I just lucked out.
review.......2005-08-27
i had a palm zire but it is to slow and frustrating. so i decided to get the m500 instead of the m505 which was a lot better choice because if you read the reviews for the m505 it has a lot more bad comments. Plus do you really need a color screen when you can just use a backlight.
Would you trust your most important data to this?.......2004-12-01
I owned a terrific Palm V which I dropped and destroyed by accident. Then I bought an m500. What a mistake. It has been nothing but problems.
I had the same problems as everybody else with the USB cradle not Hotsynching. I tried resetting the handheld several times and eventually it came back on. But what a royal pain. Also, the battery has been a problem too. For two weeks I couldn't get a charge to hold. Again, hard resetting it over an over helped.
This device cost far too much to behave this way. Tech support was limited and not helpful. I won't buy another Palm device.
Horrible hot sync; dead battery in 1 year........2004-09-16
I think most of those who have given this palm a one star or who wish to give it a negative star have summed it up correctly. The palm does not consistently sync. After 1 year of use, mine was dead as a doornail unless it was attached to the charger. Hence, I've not used it in a while.
Does that mean it's time to spend $40 on a battery? Is it really worth it? Not! Mine's in mint condition, and I'll take what I can get for it on Ebay. Time for a reliable PDA.
A total disappointment - I threw it away.......2004-08-12
This product never worked properly, had limited functionality, and isn't even worth the discount price it's now available at.

Customer Reviews:
There is no Chess game.......2007-02-04
I bought this card only and only for Chess game and there is none on it.
Good alternative.......2003-05-14
I think that this was a good choice, because you can erase games of your Palm and free space. Remember, Palm is not a toy. You will not have a Gameboy Advance in your hands if you purchase this Game Card. But I am sure that this can keep you entertained in your free time.
Great Compilaton of Games.......2003-03-14
The majority of the games are absolutely great. There are few that are dated, but the card is definately worth the price. Great way to pass the time.
Worth every penny..........2003-02-07
This palmpack card is worth every penny. I bought it mainly for travelling. We live in Europe and do a lot of long drives so this definitely keep us entertained. My dad played chess from Naples to Austria. My husband is highly addicted to Simcity, he wouldn't give it up!? and I personally liked bubblet. This will keep you entertained for hours. It's definitely better than the games in our cell phones! :)
Don't buy this unless you like to be outdated.......2003-01-15
Although the games on the card are good, most of the itmes on it, like Klondike and Slots are outdated. The games can not be moved off the card, and cannot be updated to the current version(s). You would be better off buying the games seperately.

Customer Reviews:
Fussy- poor design.......2004-02-03
The cradle is very finicky. The fit is not very tight and I have to press down on the top of the palm pilot to ensure the contacts are touching. Plus, it has it's own power plug AND the USB connection. I'd recommend the USB cable instead. It connects snugly, easily and is only one thing to plug in, plus very reliable long term. Charges fast too. This cradle just fell short all the way around.
cradle not compatible with tungsten !!!!.......2004-01-12
The fact the cradle was listed as compatible, but was not was a great disapointment for me. I shop at amazon often and have had good results till now. Maybe it would be better to go a retail store to purchase these types items.
Not compatible with Tungsten E!.......2003-12-17
I can't comment on the quality of the cradle but I have one comment. I ordered the cradle as it was listed as an accessory for the Tungsten E. However, it does not fit into the cradle and Palm doesn't seem to currently produce one compatible with it. Just want to warn others so you don't have the hassle of having to send it back.
No problems--works as advertised.......2003-09-02
I bought this extra cradle for my M515 to have at the office. It works just as I needed it too--no problems at all. I needed to sync with both home and office computers, not just a charging cradle. The only downside it that I have to continually take the PDA out of it's protective carry case to put it in the cradle--at home and office. It sure would be great if there was a cord that could hook up to it without removal.
ESD Problem.......2003-08-06
there's a known problem with the USB cradles that they are extra sensitive to Electro Static Discharge. I fries both the cradle and sometimes the handheld (cooked my M515 yesterday for the second time). Look up Palm USB ESD on Google... Palm is going to replace my handheld again. The serial version of this cradle does not have this issue. If you ask Palm about getting a serial cradle back instead of USB they state you have to buy one.

Customer Reviews:
Good for your aplications.......2002-12-27
This is a good product for store your aplications, the only bad thing is that you can't store databases on it.
Overpriced, undersized.......2002-05-20
This card is a sham folks, save your money and get a 16MB or 32MB MMC or SD card and download BackupBuddy. They offer two versions, a free utility that installs onto the card and the palm that allows you to do manual backups and restores. Or a very cheap shareware version that does automated incremental backups, encrypts the backup files. Both versions allow you to restore from the card without having to reload the software into the palm.
I don't know why Palm choose to sell this card at such a high price... it seems like they took an MMC card and put a backup utility on it, and doubled the price.
Good but too expensive.......2002-05-13
Eventhough it's good and fast due to SD card bandwidth interface, compared to MMC and Sony memory stick. Palm 16 MB SD card is too expensive. The price of [money], you can buy at least 32 MB or even 64 MB of Sandisk SD card from some stores. Moreover, 16 MB is not enough anymore when most of the professional palm programs are among 4-5 MB.
A Traveller's Best Friend- Protect Important New Contacts.......2002-03-07
I bought two of these cards.
Just like it is supposed to, this card only backs up your PDA's built-in memory, not your expansion card memories. The most important thing in my PDA is my built-in memory. It contains my contacts, my calendar and my encrypted PINs- I use an encryption program. I cannot afford to have these lost which is why I use a PDA in the first place. If my PDA is lost or destroyed I can buy a new PDA, but if I just entered several new contacts, appointments, or encrypted PINs since I last performed a HotSync, I have to reacquire that data. I carry one backup card on me at all times in a pill box- along with my other expansion cards- and swap it every week with a backup card I keep at home or in my hotel room. This way I have a week old back up if I need to check something I accidentally deleted without selecting "Save archive copy on PC". If my wife or I enter an important new contact, appointment, or encrypted PIN, I immediately use my back-up card to back up the data, instead of waiting until the next time I am at my computer to HotSync. Most people recommend buying a 16MB expansion card and using a backup program to backup your PDA. I disagree. Since the backup software is hardwired into the card and very simple to use, I do not have to worry about accidentally ruining the backup.
This card is not for everyone. But if you have important data, the ability to buy a replacement PDA, slip the back-up card in, and instantly have your PDA back, makes this a life saver on the road.

Would like to give it more than 3 stars.......2002-02-23
I would like to give Palm 5 stars for this product but in spite of it works excelent, I have to say that in the event that one card stops working 3 weeks after bought, Palm as a serious company confident of the quality of its product should have a minimun Warranty for this kind of accesories. Not the case. I decided to bought it after having Palms since the 3com pro model and noticed how important is to count with your data in the event of a Palm accident. Unfortunately, what should be a bullet prof device fails first than the device it was suposed to protect.

The vehicle charger is terrific. It is very tough, and plugs into the Treo easily ------ also, unlike older Treo chargers, it never disconnets easily from the Treo, once placed it also charges quickly and the price is cheap - you can't go wrong on this one.
