Product Description

The DMR-EZ37 DVD recorder features Accutune high-precision analog/digital tuners for recording and viewing digital broadcasts without a set top box. The DMR-EZ37 also offers Panasonic's proprietary VIERA Link functions for linked operation of other AV devices, and these functions are now even more convenient. It is now possible to control an optional DIGA recorder, when connected to a Panasonic VIERA TV, using VIERA's remote control unit. This provides convenient control over frequently used functions by using only VIERA's remote. By pressing the VIERA Link button on the remote, a DIGA menu screen can be accessed directly from the VIERA Link menu screen, to make recording settings or play a DVD. By combining intelligent i/p Conversion and 1080p Up-Conversion technologies, DIGA's 1080p technology renders high-resolution 1080p images from DVD movies and TV broadcasts to compatible TVs. The Accutune high-precision analog/digital tuner achieves stable signal reception even under poor signal conditions, such as when signals are reflected by surrounding buildings. The Accutune Digital Tuner is a high-performance hybrid tuner capable of receiving both digital and analog broadcasts. It uses a signal processor to effectively control noise and distortion, and its proprietary matching circuits allow it to transform and separate digital broadcasts into the appropriate digital or analog signals. With the built-in Digital Tuner, this will also allow you to record one digital broadcast program while watching a second program. The Tape input signal is automatically detected and optimized using Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) to provide an easy way to even more beautiful digital recordings from VHS tapes. 4 out of 5 stars The best of Three.......2007-08-21

This is my third DVD recorder, but my first Panasonic brand. As of this review the Panasonic performance far exceeds the previous two brands I owned. The momenclature is quite different from the previous two brands, which will prompt calls to Panasonic Tech Services for help. The manual requires alot of study, but the results are well worth the effort. The manuals page, and font size are larger than most manuals which is greatly appreciated
when you get over 80. The tech writers should have taken more time with the progression of the product features, example: the remote control which to me is as important as the recorder itself is shown on page 60 of a 86 page manual. I copied the page and rubber cemented to the inside cover of the manual. Panasonics parts, and labor is 1 year most manufactures labor is only 90 days. So far I'm very pleased with the EZ37V

1 out of 5 stars don't buy it, broke after 6 weeks, 2 months to repair........2007-07-10

Worked great while it worked, some really great features. But I have only had it about 6 weeks and stopped working gives error code U61 and shuts off. Just took it to a repair shop under warranty needs a new DVD assembly and the part is not avialable, has to be back ordered. Will take 2 mos to repair. Panasonic will not give me a new unit in exchange. Very disappointed in Panasonic, horrible customer service.

5 out of 5 stars Great product.......2007-06-08

After extensive research I decided on this model and I'm so happy I did.It is very easy to use but you must get familiar with the manual. I love manuals. After I hooked it up to my HDTV, which was very easy, all I did was play DVD's. Great picture and sound and great menu. There are many adjustments you can make if you choose. I really bought this to transfer wedding tapes to disc's because I have a DVR cable box.The recording went very well and the transfer easy. There is nothing so far that I can complain about. But I still pick up the manual and read because every time I do it seems I discover something else I can do and I love that. The price was a little more than many player/recorders but I think it was well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars NO HDMI.......2007-04-25

The product is great but it has no HDMI connections and definitely no HDAVI controller as mentioned in the product description.

4 out of 5 stars Works great for me...........2007-04-16

After having this item for several weeks now I decided to write a review and share what I felt...

This product does exactly what it was made to do... HDMI, HDMI...Of course there is no HDMI it does NOT have it. First rule of online buying...DO NOT TRUST SELLERS SPEC'S. I always go the manufacturer and check the specs to verify that the item does what is advertised. In this case there is NO HDMI. I knew that going in so it wasn't a factor of this review.

The unit works great. The fit and finish was perfect. The unit is complex and the manual is written for someone who has a total understanding of how DVD's are produced and used. So if you understand that then the manual is not a problem.

The only reason I gave 4 stars is a feature (to some) called "divide". When making a "copy" of a home movie from VHS to DVD every so often it makes a "divide" based on a signal on the VHS tape. I understand it is trying to make logical chapter breaks, but I wish it was an option that I could control. That is my only main gripe.

The unit does have a small menu and title building section it works and is nice to have. I don't think you need more as I don't remember those dusty VHS having more than a half stuck label on them in the first place.

Overall I think this unit does what it does best and that is make copies. The extras of having a digital ATSC tuner is a nice add on to make this unit a great machine moving into the digital television age...

Amazon.com Product Description

Introducing Panasonic's first dual-deck DVD-Video recorder/VHS recorder, which enables you to easily dub home movies and recorded VHS tapes onto either DVD-RAM or DVD-R discs, and from DVD discs back to a VHS tape. It also plays back music burned to CD-R/RW discs as well as MP3 digital audio.

The DVD side of the DMR-E75V features progressive-scan video playback and great sound thanks to the Dolby Digital and DTS output. The unit also offers twin NTSC TV tuners, enabling you to record two channels at the same time (one on DVD and one on the VHS VCR). Other features include variable data rate settings, a front A/V input, and composite-, component-, and S-video connections on the back.

With Chasing Playback, an element of the Time Slip feature, you can watch a program currently being recorded from any point that's already been recorded--while continuing to record the program in process. Simultaneous Recording and Playback, the second element of the Time Slip feature, lets you record a program onto a disc while you're watching any other program that's previously been recorded on the same disc.

5 out of 5 stars More things than I really need..........2007-03-13

This unit might be able to make a Mar's trip....far more flexibility than I need but it is there for the taking....the performance is excellent and surprisingly it plays most of the newer tapes so well they are hard to tell from a CD....sometimes impossible to tell the difference....dubbing is easy enough and provides good viewing of the dubbed item..............buy this again? Yes I would......

5 out of 5 stars Great VCR DVD player and burner.......2006-05-08

I've had this machine for over a year and have had no problems with it. Once you get used to the process for dubbing from vhs to dvd it is easier to use. I've burned many dvds and have only had trouble with a couple the machine was unable to read to be able to record on. Thanks to other reviews I've read I always finalize the dvds so they can be viewed on other machines with no problem. I would buy this unit again.

1 out of 5 stars Strong for 6 months.......2006-04-03

I have had this unit for approximately a year now. For the first 6 mnths it worked fine. After that time period we would be watching a dvd movie and half way through the picture will go black, but you could still here the sound. If we rebooted the system, and jump scenes to where the trouble began, it would generally resume and work fine. Over the past couple of months this occurs 3 to 4 times each movie. When we finally get too frustrated and take the same disk to the back of the house and put it in our cheapo GE player...it plays fine. I would not waste my money on this product.

2 out of 5 stars Customer Service Lacking !!!.......2006-01-17

Unit # 1 functioned briefly, returned for replacement . Amazon service excellent.
Unit #2..functioned 4 months then deteriorated in both VHS and DVD circuits . Repeatedly tried on-line service with Panasonic with no response . Provided S/N a number of times; Panasonic continued to re-request it . Tried phone service..NEVER- got to a human voice . Waits 45 " . Located Panasonic service in Charlotte ; returned unit twice before successful operation . They claim bad quality parts from Panasonic .

Basic problem : when playing back a dubbed RAM disk , unit would stop and reverse at 2min. 52 sec playback time . No one had a technical explanation for this ! "Fixed" it by reversing all dubbed disks to 00, then playing . Local technician says, "something's wrong" but still no real solution .

I have been faithful Panasonic customer for 30 years and this is the worst ever. Very, very disapointed . I won't hold by breath awaiting a call from Panasonic Customer Service...but am apprehensive how long the unit will operate .

5 out of 5 stars Transfer from VHS to DVD With Confidence.......2005-12-30

This product does for me what it was intended to do. It easily makes DVD's from old videotapes. Pretty much you put a recorded tape in, a blank DVD in, and you press "DUB." It's that simple. The only trick is to remember to finalize the discs, and this does take a little investigating through a somewhat confusing manual in order to do so. Once done, I'm sure they will play on most machines. I have yet to have a problem playing the DVD's on either of my two computers or my tv. I am using Memorex 16X DVD-R discs. In order to use 16X discs, you have to go to the Panasonic website to download a firmware upgrade for the machine(easy to do).

The VCR and DVD play smoothly and work quickly. I have owned Sharp, Magnavox and JVC, and the Panasonic easily outdoes any of them in the quality department.

The only minus is the inability to create thumbnail chapters on the DVDs when using a DVD-R disc. You can skip 5 minutes up to the next "chapter," but you won't find that chapter in a thumbnail.

Overall, for the price, it is hands-down a good recorder. For what you pay someone else to do, you can have your recorded discs AND the machine that recorded them.

    Product Description

For all your recording needs, the DR-MV1S is the versatile solution. Enjoy a variety of media. Record two shows at the same time and have up to 8 hours of DVD recording time. Watch a DVD while recording a TV program on tape. Dub DVD to VCR and VCR to DVD. You can easily make copies of your favorite home movies using the DV Input from a FireWire equipped camcorder or use the A/V inputs.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Merging operationally independent DVD and VHS videocassette recorders/players in one space-saving component, JVC's DR-MV1S is a must for 21st-century media mavens. You get hassle-free, 1-touch dubbing from VHS to DVD or from DVD to VHS tape (where Macrovision copy protection allows) and the ability to record to DVD while playing a VHS tape--or to record to VHS while playing a DVD. With its 2 NTSC tuners, you can even record 2 different programs simultaneously: one to DVD and the other to VHS. For the first time, progressive-scan video outputs extend to both DVD and VHS playback via JVC's VHS Progressive technology, which upconverts VHS material to 480p resolution. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD or VHS picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

With its front-panel inputs and multiformat recording and playback, the DR-MV1S is perfect for archiving home videos. For DVD recording, the unit can record to DVD-RAM, DVD-R, or to video-mode DVD-RW, letting you pick the format that's best-suited to a given application. As a player, it handles everything from VHS and multiple DVD formats (including DVD+R/+RW) to VCD/SVCD to recordable CDs filled with MP3 music files and JPEG digital images. And, to simplify advance recordings, the unit comes with VCR Plus+ and a 1-month, 8-event scheduler.

DVD-R is like a higher-capacity CD-R--and almost as widely playable. DVD-RW is rewriteable up to 1,000 times, and--like DVD-R--offers the widest compatibility among existing DVD players and computer drives. Rewriteable discs are superb for time shifting your TV viewing, since you can use the same disc week in and week out. DVD-RAM (DVD random-access memory) is a rewriteable format that uses magneto-optical (MO) technology to offer superb access times, making it great for on-disc non-linear editing. The DR-MV1S lets you fast-forward, rewind, and play a DVD-RAM disc even as you're still recording a program in progress.

Blank DVD media comes in 2 capacities: single-sided, 4.7 GB (holding about 17 times as much as a CD and around 2 hours of high-quality audio and video) and double-sided, 9.4 GB.

The DR-MV1S offers several technical features to boost image quality, including JVC's Super MPEG encode pre-processor, a 3-step process that takes place before MPEG-2 encoding of a given input signal. A time-base corrector eliminates jitter, a frame synchronizer provides frame normalization, and motion-active noise reduction provides a clearer image than do conventional frame-noise reduction techniques (such as 3D noise reduction).

Super MPEG Post-Processor enhances playback image quality through block noise-reduction circuitry. Color DigiPure provides 3D noise reduction along with color and detail enhancement, and Hadamard noise reduction eliminates so-called mosquito noise.

Conveniences include live memory, which allows fast forwarding, rewinding, and slow replay even during recording (DVD-RAM only), and DVD Navigation, which stores information for around 1,300 recorded programs. Navigation data includes disc number, title, and other details. Load a disc, and DVD Navigation will display a thumbnail of recorded programs to help you easily identify content. The thumbnail image can be animated with sound when selected with the cursor.

Other DVD features include quick skip for skipping 30 seconds forward, instant/one-touch replay that replays the last 7 seconds of a given program, natural reverse playback, and a multi-brand remote control.

Connections include an IEEE to i.LINK (DV) input for direct digital connection with a compatible camcorder; front and rear S-Video and composite-video inputs with accompanying stereo analog audio inputs; video outputs for component-video, S-Video, and composite-video; and one each optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs for Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1-channel passthrough to a multichannel audio/video receiver and speaker system.

1 out of 5 stars Great features!!! But a total piece of junk!!!!!!.......2007-02-05

(Had there been an option of 0 stars I would have used that.) I purchased this product on 4-1-05 because of the features and have had other JVC products that I have been very pleased with,BUT what a disapointment!! It was only a few months old when in the middle of the night it came on by itself and began flashing "LOADING" continuosly till I unpluged it. Thought it was just some sort of fluke until a repeat a few months later. Ssme procedure fixed it again.By the way I have a good surge protector that is connected to this unit, the TV, and the satellite and no problems with anything else.Had a couple more repeats until last time no matter how long I leave it unpluged and no matter how long pluged back in it continues to flash "LOADING". After checking other reviews, I discover a lot of other people have had this and many other problems with this machine. Some have taken them to repair center and they soon fail again. I sent a letter to JVC customer service on 1/22/2007 and so far absolutely no response.I don't give up very easy so I plan to go to higher ups in the company to at least get a response.( "sorry, you bought the piece of junk", or whatever). My immediate solution was to purchase a Panasonic DMR-EH75VS from Amazon. Haven't recieved it yet but the reviews I have seen so far have been great! Bottom Line: Myself,I will not even LOOK AT another JVC product of ANY kind and I intend to tell everyone I know of my bad experience.

1 out of 5 stars Feature Laden, poor reliability.......2006-10-15

We purchased this unit 2 1/2 years ago. Within the first 6 months, and still under warranty, a pwb assembly had to be replaced due to electronic failure. Now, 2 years later and no longer under warrantee another electronic failure has occurred rendering the unit useless.
Messages to JVC have remained unanswered.
I would strongly suggest that if you are looking for a DVD/VCR player/recorder that you learn from my experience and go with a vendor other than JVC.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing But Trouble With DR-MV1S.......2006-07-03

I bought it in May 2004. In Jan 2005 had the "Loading Bug". JVC Repair center "fixed" it. In Dec 2005, same problem was fixed under an extended warranty for $70.00. On July 3rd 2006 it now will not come on at all and all warranties are expired. JVC says "Sorry".

    1 out of 5 stars What a surprise!.......2006-05-28

I've had my DR-MV1S for a little over a year, and only used it occasionally. Well, all of a sudden the front panel started flashing "loading" non-stop...accompanied by the flashing blue display light across the whole front of the machine. This happened all on its own. I wasn't even using the thing. After looking through the instruction book for a clue, I finally just tried to turn it off by holding the power button and then the stop button, as directed. Nothing. I tried unplugging the unit for a while and then plugging it back in. "Loading, loading" started flashing again. That brought me to the internet to see if anyone else has had this happen to them. Well, apparently so. Thanks for all of your posts. I won't even bother to send this garbage in for repair.

4 out of 5 stars Good DVD RECORDER.......2006-03-08

The DVD/VCR combination is great. The manual is not well written but I was able to determine the basic operations. The best feature is the use of -RW disc you can edit the commercials out of your programs. It was difficult to figure out the use of the timer program and as a result I did not record the Superbowl. I later determined how to make the recordings via the timer. If I had the extra money I would have purchased a recorder with a hard disk. Worth the purchase.

2 out of 5 stars Handy but disappointed........2007-01-30

It's handy to have a VCR and a DVD player in one machine, but when the VCR is on, there's a distinct buzz. When the DVD's on, the volume is ten times louder. Also, the DVD player's "display" does not show you how much time is left on whatever you're watching. If you want to know how much time is left on a movie, you'd have to use a little math as it only shows you how much time has elapsed. Especially annoying when you're watching a DVD extra with no idea how long it is. Other than that, I like the remote, I like that in VCR mode you can fast-forward in different speeds, and I like the remote-controlled eject button.

4 out of 5 stars Looks Brand New.......2006-11-07

I purchased this remanufactured deck so I could copy my VCR tapes and an occassional DVD onto my Panasonic DMR=EH50 DVD and hard drive recorder. I am almost finished and the only complaint I have is that when I insert a VCR tape it immediately ejects but accepts them on the second insertion. This is a very minor inconvenience considering the low price I paid for this deck. It looks brand new and smells brand new. It has much more refinement than I expected for the price of it. I have been buying other remanufactured products as well and find this to be a money saving way to acquire quality products.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's silver, full-featured PV-D4744S integrates a high-quality, progressive-scan DVD player and four-head, hi-fi VCR. Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the PV-D4744S stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The VCR's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion tape play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. The unit even lets you record a TV show while watching a DVD at the same time. By receiving the Extended Data Service signal from your local PBS channel (where available), the PV-D4744S sets its own clock and date. Furthermore, a 24-hour back-up system saves the settings and, in the event of a power outage, resets them automatically when the power is restored.

Front audio/video inputs make it easy to hook up your camcorder or gaming device. A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured AV receiver. The player simulates surround sound from DVD programs for a spacious effect from any two speakers.

Other features include auto VCR head cleaning and tape-position display, DVD repeat play, DVD high-speed smooth-motion scanning (up to 100x normal speed), DVD picture zoom, and a trilingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French). The unit is Energy Star compliant and comes with a universal remote control.

    What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo, remote control, remote batteries, audio/video cables, and a user's manual.

    5 out of 5 stars It's what I expected.......2005-10-03

An uncomplicated product that works. The sound is great, and it only took a few minutes to hook it up once I realized I had the cords mixed up. I enjoy listening to cds on the DVD player. The only thing about it is that it rewinds a bit too much, and you have to press twice to stop it. Other than that, I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

    3 out of 5 stars satisfactory.......2005-10-01

Considering the price and my aversion towards refurb products, I'd have to say that my first month has been satisfactory. However, I was annoyed that none of audio / video cables nor the remote batteries were included. When I contacted Amazon, they referred me to Panasonic. Rather than wait for several weeks for Panasonic to remedy the situation, I bought the items at a local Best Buy. The unit was purchased for my classroom, therefore, its durability won't be tested. So far with infrequent use it's been satisfactory.

    Product Description

For the ultimate in performance and convenience, the HR-XVC37 is the logical choice. Enjoy your VHS tapes with VHS Progressive Scan along with a unified progressive scan DVD and VHS component output that simplifies installation and operation. Watch a DVD while recording a TV program on tape. Even dub DVD to VCR (non copyrighted material only).

    Amazon.com Product Description

Simplicity and quality merge in JVC's silver HR-XVC37U combination DVD player and VCR. The unit lets you enjoy cutting-edge DVDs alongside your existing library of videocassettes--without having to continually switch inputs on your TV whenever you change viewing formats. And, with MP3 and JPEG image CD playback and hi-fi VHS performance, the unit is built to satisfy your music and home-theater needs. The progressive-scan HR-XVC37U plays not only DVD and multiple CD formats, but DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, CD-RW, VCD, and SVCD as well.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the HR-XVC37U stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs--and your videocassettes, too. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD or VHS picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Composite-video, S-video, and RF (coaxial) outputs ensure compatibility with any television, and you don't have to worry about making separate connections for each component--even if you're using the RF audio/video output, both the DVD and the VCR signals will flow through a single connection.

With S-VHS quasi playback, you'll be able to watch (in regular VHS resolution) tapes recorded in Super-VHS, normally only compatible with more expensive S-VHS machines. Advanced programming can be set for 1 months and 8 events, and Pro-cision 19 micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode. Other VCR features include child lock (prevents unintended viewings), index search, skip search, auto clock setting, auto timer setting, and auto tracking.

Two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs (1 for each component) channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the DVD player's digital-audio outputs (1 each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A front-panel set of audio/video inputs simplifies hookup with camcorders, gaming consoles, and other devices.

    What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo unit, a composite-video/stereo analog-audio interconnect, an instruction manual, remote batteries, warranty info, and a full-function remote control.

3 out of 5 stars Tapes keep ejecting.......2006-10-16

This is the first DVD - VHS combo that I have ever purchased.
I really did love it at first and think that the model is beautiful.

I found this model extremely easy to use and had no problems in understanding it. However I only had this model for about 4 months and all a sudden it automatically keeps ejecting my VHS tapes. This has happened about 25 - 30 times in the last month or perhaps I noticed it more whenever I miss my soap opera not being taped. At times this automatic ejection has happened three times a day.

However it seems like this automatic ejection has been increasing. I tried putting something in front the door hoping the tape will just push itself back into place but it doesn't.

I tried a different tape and still encounter the same problem. Again, this wouldn't be a major issue for me, it is just getting home from work and seeing that I can't watch my story. Missing the story is no major crisis but it is nice to come home and relax by watching it and seeing what Tabathia is cooking up for Harmony!!! ; - )

2 out of 5 stars Good Performance Bad User Interface.......2005-02-24

This VCR has excellent features, it records beautifully and the component output looks great for vcr or dvd. It is great if you don't want to buy Tivo or similar device for the cost. The problem is that it has horrible controls. I worked for the cable company for years and can hook up any combination of VCR, TV, Reciever, Projector, recorder, computer, etc. that there is. I have hd satelite cable, and internet all going to my HDTV, and I can easily operate all of it, but this VCR is awful. There is no ONE menu. It has several menus that are not attached to each other and instead of drop down menus, it has all the individual controls on the remote. Some of the buttons have 3 different labels on 53 different buttons. Every time you switch menus, there is a 5 second delay while it changes. It is the worst design I have ever seen on any piece of equipment. Even though the quality is great it is not worth the agitation, I would return it, but I bought it online and I don't want the hassle of packaging it and mailing it back. If you are not patient DO NOT BUY THIS VCR.

    4 out of 5 stars I'm Pleased As Well.......2004-12-17

Unit arrived in just about 4 days, which I thought was very good.
Shipped from Vann's in Montana to Texas. The unit performs fine,
although I had a phase effect on the vcr playing back a few tapes
recorded on it, but seemed to clear up after I bought new tapes.
As the previous reviewer mentioned the remote is a hassle sometimes, trying to record with actually 3 buttons REC-PLAY-PAUSE. The quality with playback on the dvd unit is fabulous
will play any of my purchased and burned dvds. Good solid unit
for the price. Oh Yeah I forgot, it's nice to be able to copy
my burned dvds to the vcr, cool.

    4 out of 5 stars pleased.......2004-12-08

Replaced our Sony 350 combo with this one. The Sony when playing DVDs would sometimes freeze up and after a while finally eject the DVD. The Sony also took about a minute to start up a DVD, the JVC is almost immediate. The JVC is free of the Sony's problems. It plays all our DVDs and does a better job at playing JPEGs off the computer. Only complaint is to record on VCR is awkward to have to press 2 buttons on the remote. The time record - in intervals of 30 min - you have to press the button on the unit. The combocosts $50 less than the Sony and is 50% better. Very pleased, heartily recommend.

    3 out of 5 stars Near Miss.......2004-09-24

Nice unit. Progressive scan VHS definitely looks better! Unfortunately the player I received had a couple of defects. First, and worst, the tracking didn't work well at all. This model automatically handles video tracking adjustments (like most these days) but mine couldn't seem to get a lock. The result was periods of really impressive resolution followed by unwatchable choppiness and jitters. Manual adjustments didn't help at all. Another tape issue: ejecting tapes was only possible if I held the tape door open by hand. Otherwise tapes slammed into the back of the door and re-inserted themselves. Really surprising for JVC, the pioneering force behind VHS.

The DVD side of the player seemed to do a fine job. I'm no videophile, but in comparison to the Samsung, Toshiba, and Onkyo players I own, this one did a great job. No complaints.

    Good:
    + Progressive DVD *and* VHS
+ Everything (even broadcast TV) out one set of Component cables!
    + Combo unit saves space

    Bad:
    - My unit had issues with the tape player
    - Remote control has a slightly odd layout

    3 out of 5 stars

P.S. I am exchanging this unit for the same model. I really would like this to work. Will post an update when the new one arrives.

1 out of 5 stars Worse home electronic device I've ever owned.......2006-03-28

This unit is horrible! It takes forever to eject a DVD when commanded, it's excessively slow to switch to another chapter when you command skip between chapters, it won't read home-burned double -layer DVDs (!@#$!), etc. I would steer clear of this unit. I'm so incensed at how bad this product is that I won't EVER buy another JVC product of any sort.

    1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!.......2005-11-18

I bought THREE of these things over the last two years ... at least two of them from Amazon. (The actual model number was different -- XVC20U in black -- but it's basically the same combo deck they've been selling for several years now. Now they've added progressive scan and DVD burner, other than that it looks like the exact same thing that I bought.)

They worked fine at first, but after a while, DVDs started freezing up on them. Oddly, I have absolutely NO trouble playing music CDs in the very same drives.

DVD freezing has happens on ALL THREE of them, but it is worse on the unit I have used most. It seems to do it less when the machine or the DVD has cooled down. It gets worse over time. Lens cleaning with a disc-brusher, lens cleaning via taking off the case for direct contact cleaning, and air-pressured dusting -- all do no good.

Anyway, thanks to JVC I have several hundred dollars worth of DVD players that don't play DVDs ... other reviews (under various model numbers) suggest there's not a chance JVC will make good on them.

I have had, in the past, good luck with JVC TVs and car stereo units, and I try to stay loyal to brands, suppliers and what not. But I seriously doubt I will be making any other JVC purchases due to these things. I suppose JVC doesn't place much value on their brand or image or they wouldn't have dumped this stuff into the marketplace.

It seems to be getting harder and harder to find companies that bother to make products that are actually worth what you pay for them. I suppose companies that rip-off customers and laugh their way to the bank must be part of the "new economy" I keep hearing about.

1 out of 5 stars Barely outlived the warranty.......2005-10-07

The on screen instructions for recording television didn't match the actual method required. The DVD/VCR switch no longer functions. Now the program I recorded can't be watched because I can't switch it to VCR, nor can I eject the tape. The warranty expired 2-months ago.

1 out of 5 stars JVc, the J must stand for Junk.......2005-05-23

Not only was this defective from Day 1, JVC Customer service did not answer the phone for many days. Their customer service center wanted $75 for a diagnostic. Keep in mind that the cost of the item was $99. The original tape in the machine does not eject. I will never buy any JVC product again. Bad product, bad service.

    1 out of 5 stars 1yr and 1/2 and it died.......2005-02-11

Just a little bit after expiration of warranty the unit died, dvd player stopped working.
