Product Description
Philips DVP5140 Progressive Scan DVD Player, can play CD-R/W, DivX, DVD, DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W DVD-Video, MP3, MPEG4, Picture CDs, VCD, and SVCD. That's right, all of this in one small package for an incredibly reasonable price. All while delivering quality picture and audio performance. Component video output lets you connect this DVD player to your high-end home television set to optimize viewing quality.
From the Manufacturer
192KHz sampling enables you to have an accurate representation of the original sound curves. Together with a 24-bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analogue sound wave form, giving a much richer audio reproduction.
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and listening pleasure.
12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.
The attractive enclosure has a very low profile.
DivX Ultra combines DivX playback with great features like integrated subtitles, multiple audio languages, multiple tracks and menus into one convenient file format.
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and viewing pleasure.
Picture CD is a CD-R or CD-RW disc on which you can store your MP3 and digital pictures. When inserting a Picture CD in the DVD player, a screen menu will pop up, showing your JPEG's and/or MP3 files on the disc. Just select the music and pictures files you wish to enjoy and press play or OK. You can watch your pictures on TV with your music playing simultaneously.
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.
Other standard features include:
- 192kHz/24-bit audio DAC delivers high-quality audio.
- 12-bit/ 108Mhz video DAC for sharp image with natural colors.
- Ultra-slim design.

Great Versatile DVD Player!.......2007-09-19
I bought this DVD player after seeing it in action at a friend's house. I have not been disappointed with my own player. It works great both with my normal DVDs and with data DVDs on which I've burned divx/avi files. My only quibble with it was that it took me a small amount fiddling before I figured out which buttons on the remote functioned as the fast forward and rewind buttons. All in all, I'm very pleased with this DVD player and would recommend it to anyone who has a lot of divx files they'd like to watch on a bigger screen than their computer can provide.
Plays Everything.......2007-09-17
This is good DVD Player. I have used the earlier DVP642 for about a year, but it won't play DivX6. DVP5140 plays DivX6, this player is a wonder it literally plays everything that you throw at it.
I am satisfied with this player. The only flaw i find is the build quality is not as good as the DVP642, it feels a bit vulnerable compared to the DVP642. The DVP642 appeared more robust. The second thing is, it does not have a volume control on the menu.
Other than that this player is good and for the price its a steal deal.
Highly recommended.
Great find!.......2007-09-16
I am so happy with this DVD player that I have recently purchased a second one! Great find for a great price.
DVD player.......2007-09-12
This DVD player is pretty good, and the good thing about it is that it is multiformat and can also be used to play DVD's from Europe or Asia.
Everything it says it is........2007-09-10
This DVD player is the best I've ever owned. The region-free mod and the ability to upgrade the codecs make it incredibly versatile. The sound quality and picture quality are great, and the remote [although some parts aren't clearly marked] offers all the functions I need. Philips offers another, more expensive "region-free" player, but as other reviews have mentioned, this a much better deal and has all the same functions. All in all, a really great deal.

Great gift!.......2007-09-21
I gave this as a gift to my husband who had requested a picture of our new daughter for his desk. Since she grows so fast and we have tons of cute pictures this allows us to see them all! It is also easy to use.
Happy Grandma.......2007-09-19
I bought the Phillips Digital Frame at a local office supply store, the 6" or 6.5" with interchangeable frames. It is easy to use, the detail in the pictures played on it are gorgeous and the colors are beautiful. I only had a problem with the stand for it and finally this 67 year-old grandma figured it out. It is fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone and would buy it as a gift for anyone. I want a 9" Phillips Digital Frame in the future.
Philips 6.5 inch Photoframe.......2007-09-16
So - it doesn't have a wooden frame, but for the price this is a good small size frame with a quality LCD panel. It does not come with a remote control and using the buttons and controls is not easy. If only Apple made photoframe at this price, or Philips engineers learn how to build a user interface from Apple products !
I also regret not having bought the 8inch or larger as this is a wee bit small.
had to return mine.......2007-09-15
A lot of people like this frame, and I liked it too, at first. But after about a week it went blank and I could not restart or reset it. I was displaying about 3000 JPEGs using a 1 gig memory card. Before it quit for good it exhibited some flaky behavior -- I had to cycle through the different display modes before it would run the slide show. Maybe it doesn't like that many pictures...?
Great Gift Item.......2007-09-13
I have purchased two Philips digital frames as gifts, the first one over a year ago, and they are huge hits with the recipients. They have great, clear displays and are easy to operate. I have never heard a complaint about appearance or function, and neither gift recipient is particularly tech savvy. I definitely recommend this item as a gift or even for yourself.

Customer Reviews:
good value.......2007-09-19
I've had the JBuds for nearly a year now, and they've held up well. I would say that the noise reduction is decent, but not as significant as with my battery-powered Sony MDR-NC6. Very comfortable and good quality manufacturing.
better than advertised.......2007-09-19
total noise reduction with excellent sound quality. You also get more than one cap for the head phones.
Very comfortable, accomodates all ear sizes........2007-09-17
I really like these ear buds. They are very comfortable and you can change the piece on the ends to fit the size of your ear. Three size choices which makes these very practical. With a good fit you will really get the best sound quality possible.
Best $20 ear buds.....EVER!.......2007-09-15
These are amazing. Forget the price tag (which itself is a bargain), these ear buds sound really good. I did a side-by-side comparisons with Apple (in-box), Creative (in-box), Phillips noise reduction and Sennheiser PXC 250 noise reduction and I could not believe that JBuds sounded better! The ambient noise blocking is pretty good too. However, I am not sure how well it will work in a plane. The in-ear fit is pretty comfortable. Although no audiophile, I am pretty fussy about my sound quality. JBuds definitely made me happy.
Somewhat better than average.......2007-09-14
The JBuds are an economic choice with reasonable performance. Their main weakness is overall frequency response which seems weak in higher frequencies. The ear buds are advertised as "noise-reducing", chiefly because the interchangeable caps are designed to fill the ear canal and block external sounds. The JBuds are nominally effective at this goal. Also, it took several days to get used to the feeling, because they rest in the ear canal, not on the outside. Incidentally, I have a Samsung MP3 player (which I love). The Samsung ear buds that came with the device were superior to the JBuds. In summary the JBuds are fairly good, especially considering the price.

Make it Region free you will not regretted:
I bought two of these and was disappointed to find they were both Region 1 only...until I did this:
1. Make sure there is no disc in the player.
2. Turn power off and on again.
3. Open the tray.
4. On the remote, hit 9879 and then 0. This changes unit to Region 0, meaning it'll play all regions.
5. Hit OK on the remote.
6. The screen will display a massage

Worst DVD Player ever !!.......2007-09-21
It freezes all the time and just can't be fixed ! Don't waste your money and stay far far away from this one !
plays it all.......2007-09-20
The product description claimed it plays it all. And it does!
The price appeared to be low. And it was!
I'm thrilled with the performance and the cost.
Buy it before the company figures out it can easily sell this thing for
a few times the price.
Great Value.......2007-09-15
This DVD player is very easy to use and the up converting to 1080p on our new 61" Samsung LED HDTV is awesome. Played my old "Independence Day" DVD with the new equipment for the first time and it is really like stepping into the scenes.
Love it, but I've had problems.......2007-09-13
The main reasons I bought this DVD player were the great reviews and the small size (I have it on a dresser in my bedroom and wanted it to blend in). The most important thing to me is the picture quality... and so far, I'm impressed. I would have given this 5 stars if it weren't for the other problems I've had. But I will say this is my first upconverting DVD player and it's connected to my first HDTV. So, anything would probably look better than what I had before.
The problems: Almost every time I stop a movie halfway through to watch later, something isn't right when I resume it. I hit "stop" and it says "the movie will resume at this point." Then I hit power to turn it off. The next day, I hit power to turn it on and it immediately starts playing where I left off... however, almost every movie has had issues when it resumed. 1: The Davinci Code - no audio at all when it resumed. I have my TV connected through HDMI and somehow the setting for HDMI audio switched back to off (no one touched it since I stopped it the night before). 2: Apocalypto - The subtitles went away when I resumed the movie. 3: Blades of Glory - This one was really strange. When I resumed, only the background music played... the voice and effects tracks were missing. Each time I was able to correct the problem by starting the movie from the begining and skipping to the chapter where I left off. But this is still very annoying! I think I have the latest firmware, but I'll check again.
If I never stopped and restarted a movie, I probably wouldn't have ever had this issue and would have given this DVD player 5 stars. But with 2 small kids and a new puppy that has to go outside regularly, it's rare I can sit through a 2 or 3 hour movie non-stop.
You get Too much for too little.......2007-09-10
I have no complaints for this player. I mean, how much can you ask for US$62?
It reads anything I throw at it. Xvid and Divx movies play without problems. Upscaling works just fine but sometimes it can make you feel a little dizzy.
USB port can do external hard disks if you take your time and do some testing first.
I would definitely buy Philips again.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-09-21
Very good arrived, good packed and tracking services. the product is good by the price, quality of image however the usb port is 1.0 and the movie's transfering is slowed very slow with time delay. Why don,t put usb 2.0 in port?
Good dvd/divx player........2007-09-18
I'm only rating it good because it doesnt have the toslink (fiber optics) digital out. I think this is a major flaw. I knew it didnt have it and that is the reason i still have my old dvd player along witht he new one. My receiver doesnt have coaxial digital imputs and i love it to much to change it, even after 7 years of use. Other than that, the product is great. i havent found a single .avi file that it cant read. The USB port is just awesome. After i bought it i havent had the need to burn any dvds because i just put the avi files in my flash drive and that's it. It also reads most subtitles files without the need to embed them to the .avi file. The quality of the image is fantastic, but i dont have a HDTV, so i cant comment on the upscaling faculties of the player. The better quality avi files show on the tv with opractically 0 pixelation. Another complain is that some fucntions can only be accessed through the remote. That is never a good thing because remote controls tend to have a shorter life than the units they control.Overall, a gret player. If it wasnt because of the lacking fiber optics digital out i would call it THE PLAYER. Still great!
Great DVD Player for the money.......2007-09-13
This player has great picture quality, and plays just about any Divx file that you can throw at it. The only problem that I have with it is that I needed a 1080p upscaling to go with my TV.
Not ready for prime time.......2007-09-11
Two major problems with this device. First it routinely freezes after pausing a DVD, forcing you to unplug the device and restart. Second, after pausing and trying to resume when it doesn't freeze, the device will not resume where you left off, forcing you to fast forward or jump to the chapter closest to where you paused.
Best DVD player for Bit Torrent movies No Problem Playing AVI files.......2007-09-06
My review only pertains to downloaded media.
I bought this $60 player from amazon and could not be happier. I used the DVP5960 to replace the high end PC that was serving up my movies and music to my entertainment system. This player has no problem reading any media format out there. Check the specs for yourself, but I ran cd-r cd-rw dvd-r dvd+r dvd-RW, flash drives, external HDs
{big note here: This device does not read NTFS. With stock windows tools you can only format FAT drives up to 32 Gigs. Any out of the box USB drive or flash stick will work fine. {as long as you did not go out of your way to format the device NTFS} The downside on the usb reader is no long file name support.
The Key to Success, for this player, is the combo of the USB port and the Updated codec's. I played movies off a 2gig flash drive, external usb hard disk, burnt dvds, and over burned CD/rw's.
This player, played movies that VLC would not. No macro pixels (IN ALL THE DARK SCENES) This player does not play .bin/.cue files in the raw format. {no big deal, just burn them to kvcd like you are supposed to and they run fine) The best downloads are in .avi format anyway.
I had some fast forward problems. I only got a 4x FF speed. Then, on my next movie, I could not fast forward at all. {this was on a flash drive} I unplugged the player, restarted and the FF went up to 32x.

I definitely recommend this item as a gift or even for yourself.

great pictures every time.......2007-09-21
I researched for several weeks before deciding on the Philips...and it turned out to be the best of any selections out there. It may be a bit more expensive, but certainly worth the ease of getting a start-up, and the the added features, especially an on-off timer, was really an added dimension over other digital frames.
The Amazon price was reasonable, and it came in just a few days. I am pleased with the transaction, and of course, the great product!
excellent frame.......2007-09-20
I have had my frame under constant use on my office desk for nearly six months without problems. Clear display. My only complaint is with the included software which is not as user friendly as could be and quite slow to up load pictures.
Excellent build quality and superb display.......2007-09-19
I bought this for my mum in England, but now my wife wants me to get another for our own use. It has a voltage switching A/C adapter (with a nice long cord) so will work anywhere with the appropriate plug adapter. I'd seen a couple of cheapo frames in action at friends' houses, and I can tell you that there is no comparison between them and this product - the quality is really superb.
I loaded 700 images on an SD card after scaling them down to 720x480 to reduce their size. These images are then 20-50K in size, so you can fit 1000's on any decent sized card. There are plenty of free downloadable tools you can find on the internet to resize large images in bulk.
The other prep of the pictures I did was to crop those that are in portrait mode. The frame will display thick borders unless you do this - I found it better to crop to something approaching landscape, or at least a square-ish format to make better use of the beautiful display of this device.
As many reviews have said the picture quality is amazing. Images really do look better than 4x6 prints. The menuing is OK - could probably be improved upon, but it's satisfactory. The build quality is superb. Don't drop the frame stand on your foot, or you'll have a bad bruise! I think it's built to support a frame of 100lbs weight!
The only criticism I have is that there is not an option to select the source of images. If you don't have a card in, it will play from internal memory. If you put a card in, it will play from that. This is all fine, but goes wrong if you turn on the frame when a memory card is already inserted. For some strange reason, it starts copying images off the memory card to the frame. To avoid this, don't have the card inserted when turning on the frame, then put the card in one the frame is on. This is a very odd design choice - perhaps Philips may change this with a firmware release - I can't imagine why they designed it this way.
This one small gripe aside, I would not hesitate to recommend this excellent product.
Mac user with NO regrets... .......2007-09-16
This is the best gift I've ever bought someone! I loved it so much I want to keep it for myself. I read a lot of reviews before spending the $200, and it's worth every penny. The LCD screen is Excellent! I use a mac iBook G4 and thought I was going to have trouble uploading my photos because of all the negative reviews from other Mac users - and I did, just like every other mac-owner has. The solution is to simply purchase a USB card reader (about $20 from Best Buy) and an SD card (512 MB for about $20 from Best Buy - holds about 150 pics from an 8 megapixel camera). I inserted the SD card into the USB card reader, plugged it up to my Mac and dragged about 100 pictures into the folder icon that appeared on my desktop. I then ejected the SD card and inseted it into the digi photo frame and a few moments later a slideshow began. It looks FABULOUS. [...].
Manual Lacking- Room for improvement-File Name Quirks.......2007-09-15
Apple Mac users - the file name extension must be .jpg and not .jpeg for Philips digital photo frame to recognize your pictures on the memory card. I suspect it is the same if you are using a USB cable.
You think Philips could have made this Apple MAC friendlier.
MAC users - The CDROM is worthless that ships with the product. You will need to goto the customer support page to download a PDF version of the manual. Philips should have included the PDF of the manual on the CDROM.
Nowhere on the box does it say how many photos can be stored on the internal memory. The user manual says 100-150 but that depends upon their size I would think. They say that a 250Meg card can store 850 photos. This must be less than 300dpi or 5megapixel resolution as my scans at 300dpi are about 700kbytes.
Not sure what kind of rechargeable battery is used internally (Nicad etc). Philips states that the photoframe can operate on the battery for one hour without being recharged.
There are only two memory card slots - a compact flash slot and a universal SD type of memory slot. There is a USB port but it is not the standard type that would readily accept a flash memory USB drive. I have not tried hooking it directly to a computer to upload pictures.
Menu buttons take some getting used to. I am constantly hitting the power button by mistake. They should move this button to a different position. Navigating the windows of the user interface takes some getting used to.
I see what other reviewers mean about the stand positions. You think they could design this better to support greater variability in viewing angles.
The picture frame is nice to look at after you have it working. It automatically senses when you turn the frame to adjust the view - this is a nice feature if you have many vertical pictures to view versus horizontal pictures.
The multiple color frames is a nice touch so that a user can select the color depending upon where the picture frame is placed. However, a less moder more conservative wook frame would be a nice touch.
My 02 cents.

Disappointing performance.......2007-09-17
After reading a recommendation for this, I purchased this, the Terk, and the Silver Sensor as well and there was no comparison that the Silver Sensor (PHDTV1 ) gave the strongest signal. This one gave at least 15% less signal regardless of amplification for every channel.
Not what's expected for High Prefomance.......2007-09-12
It works as well as any set of rabbit ears. The ability to adjust the gain does give some extra fine tuning possibilities, but event on the top floor of a 2 story townhouse, other rabbit ears work just as well, even for bringing in HDTV channels.
Worked great for me at 15 miles, not great at 30.......2007-09-10
I used this at a location 15 miles away from the broadcast towers, and every signal came in crystal clear, with a minimum of 70 signal strength. This was with amplification turned on to about 50%.
I moved to another location 30 miles away from a different broadcast tower, and signals were only pulled in sporadically, at about 20-50 signal strength.
So I would recommend this for anyone living 15 miles or less from the broadcast antennas, it was working wonderfully at that distance.
Nice Antenna.......2007-09-06
After I finally figured out how to connect it to my 50" Plasma TV and then to run a search from the TV for the channels the antenna will pick up, I was pleasantly surprised to get a few local channels in HD or digital service that looked much better than what the local Dish Network channel looked like. I couldn't get all of the majors (fox, abc, nbc, cbs) at one time however due to antenna positioning. You have to play around with the antenna positioning as well as the number of red lights to have going on the tuner. (signal strength) You can have anywhere from 0 to 5 lights going. I have 3 stations going well right now (local channel 3, abc, cbs and fox) NBC in hd won't come in with those set and when i adjust to get it, then I lose fox or abc. I'm still hoping to find one setting/position where I can get them all, but I'm not complaining b/c I don't have to pay for these local hd stations. :-)
OK for big city use but does not cut it in smaller markets.......2007-09-04
Finding the right Antenna for your HDTV is really a mix and match because depending on your situation you either get all signals, some or none. Does this antenna work, yes on three out of six local stations. If the signal is weak then the amplification failed. If you live in a big city and need something better than just rabbit ears this will do. If you have some low power stations, spend a little more.

Unacceptable low frequency response.......2007-09-18
Visualize your favorite band with no bass player, half the
drums missing from the drum kit and low E and A strings missing
from every guitar. That's what you get with these headphones.
What I'm trying to say is that these headphones have almost
no bass response. Their performance is completely unacceptable
for music, though for voice they should be fine.
most comfortable headphones I've found.......2007-09-10
I've tried all different types and these are the only ones that fit my small ears and don't hurt after wearing them for a while. I just bought my second pair because the first pair started to have problems but for only $10 each, I don't mind having to replace them every year or so.
uncomfortable.......2007-09-06
the ear phones are nice and compact, but after about 5 minutes they hurt my ears. I rarely use them.
For the Price Great Earphones.......2007-09-04
These earphones are inferior (sound and bass) to my previous purchase of Sony earphones of ($35), but it's really good for the price I paid for them. They fit snuggly in my ear and they don't fall off or anything (especially when working out, jogging, doing sports stuff).
Nice set of phones.......2007-09-01
I use these earphones for running and hiking. They are basic but high quality. Sound quality is very good and the hooks keep them in place unlike earbuds. Good product.
