Only two problems........2007-08-18
Haha, well I have to say that even with the two problems I have with this CD player it definitely better than the CD player I've been using for years (Its from 1994). The touch screen is very responsive and i have no trouble with it. i like the 'resume' feature also. The first problem i have with this CD player is that it will just stop playing and freeze up in the middle of a song. I've only had the thing for a month and the more often i use it the more often this problem seems to happen. My second problem is that i don't like the 'DBB' (Double Bass Booster). I've found that that all that it does is make my music sound murky.

A singe CD can store up to 10 hrs of music. MP3 has become the standard audio compression format, allowing quick and easy audio file transfer. Windows Media Audio (WMA) is a highly compressed digital audio format from Microsoft that delivers great sound with music files that take up half the disk space and download in half the time. A single CD can store up to 20 hours of good quality WMA music recorded at a bit rate of 64 Kbps.
- Dynamic Bass Boost delivers deep and dramatic bass
Dynamic Bass Boost maximizes your music enjoyment by emphasizing the bass content of the music throughout the range of volume settings - from low to high - at the touch of a button! Bottom-end bass frequencies usually get lost when the volume is set at a low level. To counteract this, Dynamic Bass Boost can be switched on to boost bass levels, so you can enjoy consistent sound even when you turn down the volume.

Customer Reviews:
I should have waited for reviews..........2007-03-01
...before ordering this boombox! My daughter has a great Philips boombox, and I thought, well, try this one. What a terrible investment. I agree with all of the previous reviews. Very poor sound quality in every aspect. The cover for the cd loading dock is a manual lift that barely moves, it's hard to insert amd remove cds, the tuner is,... well, just don't buy it. I am returning this thing. If I had an option for "no star" that's how it would be rated.
Philips boom box.......2007-02-13
I was very disappointed with the quality and sound of this boom box. The AM and FM tuner was a cheap analog tuner comparable to a $5.00 radio and the sound system is very poor quality. It is not up to Philips standards and is very expensive for what you get. The only thing going for it is a USB port. I would recommend passing over this one.
Not worth the cost.......2007-02-13
I bought this boom box because of this advertised feature: "Enjoy MP3 and WMA music from portable USB storage device/MP3 player". I expected to plug in my MP3 player and listen to music. We tried four different types of MP3 players, and none were compatible (I-river, Sandisk, Samsung, and Trutech). It can play music from a jump drive--but that wasn't why I bought it.
I also expected at least decent sound quality. The sound quality is terrible--really low-quality speakers. At half of max volume, the speakers buzz and crackle.
I can think of only two good things to say about the Philips AZ1835: it comes with a remote control and has good radio reception.
Soo much money for the quality of the product.......2007-02-13
I recently buy this Boom Box and I'am a little disapointed because the quality of the material used in this. The sound its not good when you put it in the max level and the MP3 cd repeat the songs in alternation option. The price its not cheap for the quality but at this day its the only option for a usb player boom box in the market. I hope in the future Phillips go with a better quality products.

A lemon.......2006-12-28
I thought it was just my player, but after reading the reviews above I'm getting the picture that's not the case. Mine won't even play recorded CDs, even though it's supposed to. I was going to ship it back, but I think I'd be better off not even paying for the shipping and just buying a new CD player.
OK - Once you know what works.......2006-12-04
I have had the same problem with the unit halting on MP3 playback. After experimenting, I found that it seems to be related to the use of folders. I have put all the mp3's in the root directory of RW CD's and it does not exhibit the problem. Random playback works well. 128Kb/s files cause an occasional pause, but the player recovers without a problem. This seems to be less of a problem with 96Kb/s files, which is less taxing on the buffering process.
Overall, I'm now pretty pleased with the unit. I'm not happy with Philips' support and lack of guidance in successful mp3 playback.
I thought with a Philips name it would be good.......2006-05-06
I sadly bought this without reading any reviews, and sadly I had the same problem.
When playing mp3 CD's the Philips AZ1303 would often stop at certain tracks before or during play, and revert back to track one, then stays idle.
After making 3 different CD's burning at slower speeds to reduce error I realized it was the player not the CD's, so I decided to send it back to Amazon. New yeah right...
I do have to say that the radio on the player is one of the best I have seen with little or no static even indoors.
So if your looking for an expensive radio then this player is right up your alley, but if your looking for an actual CD Radio with MP3-CD Playback, then I would look somewhere else because Philips can't live up to it's name with this product.
AVOID!
Not very good........2006-01-14
the radio reception was poor, and i had the same problems as the other reviewer. it would never finish a whole song on an MP3 disc without skipping and just stopping altogether. avoid at all costs.
DO NOT BUY THIS!.......2005-11-07
I had nothing but problems with this. It would not play MP3s as the description indicates. It would not play in random mode. I could not skip to the next track. It would not play more than a few seconds of a song before stopping.
I was unable to locate support on their website. Their customer service support was terrible.
Do not buy this!

The Philips AX5111 offers you a great basic personal CD player option with rich sound and skip protection. It is perfect for listening, studying, and exercising. The Blue Translucent door and heat resistant body lets you use this CD player anywhere - at the beach, pool, or outside on your deck.
Amazon.com Product Description
The Philips AX511117 is a great basic CD player with rich sound and extended skip protection. It's ideal for listening, studying, and exercising, offering shuffle and repeat modes, and its blue translucent door and heat-resistant body let you use it anywhere--at the beach, pool, or on the deck.
Electronic Skip Protection (ESP) automatically stores digital music information during play (using a 45-second buffer) and inserts it in place of lost information when the CD player is bumped or shaken, preventing interruptions caused by shocks and vibration. Playback options include 30-track programming, resume (a bookmark function that picks up playback where you last stopped), repeat (track or disc), and random play.
A hold switch prevents unintended interruptions in playback and saves batteries by negating playback when the player is stopped. Auto power off kicks in one minute after playback has ended, an additional battery saver. The onboard one-bit digital-to-analog converter renders digital audio as smoothly and accurately as possible. The player comes with headphones and a handy belt clip. The player runs for about 25 hours on two standard AA batteries (not supplied).

Best CD Player I've Ever Owned.......2003-08-22
this is probably the best CD player i've ever owned in my life. when i got it, i thought it was okay. i wasn't really looking for a durable cd player; just something that would last me for a while. well, i was in for a surprise! i have dropped this cd player on concrete over 20 times, and nothing has happened to it! i even take it with me when i mow the lawn!! the hold feature helps when i'm on the lawn mower or in the car. also, the ESP system is WONDERFUL! even when riding around on a bumpy lawn mower, it never skips! AT ALL! probably the best feature is the fact that this is not a batter-guzzling machine. i don't have to change the batteries often, and that saves not only money, but time, and by that i mean because the battery compartment is inside the cd cover, which could be a pain to open or a plus because you won't accidentally open it. however you look at it. all in all, this is definately a 5-star cd player.
Good Value.......2003-02-10
I recently purchased this CD player. So far, it has proved to be a good value, robust player. The sound is very good, and has general features (DBB, program, random play) along with remote control pad and belt clip, all useful. I have been unable to fault the play, even on extensive shaking. One possible flaw: The "Open" button is badly designed, it could be prone to accidental opening of the player during use. Also, the buttons on the side (volume, hold) are inconvenient. Apart from that, a great value first CD player.
Great!.......2003-01-17
This is a great cd player. Very good if you work out or jog (thats why its called jogproof). I have been using this player for a couple of months, and highly recommend it.

Backpack proof - You will like this.......2003-10-17
I found the hold switch to be very useful.. it prevents the player from turning on (or shutting off) accidently when it travels in your backpack. Very pleased overall.
Great sound; misleading Amazon description.......2003-10-13
OK, it sounds very nice! But why did Amazon say there was a "built in" rechargeable battery (some reviewers said so, too). I think that Amazon was reporting on a different model, maybe the AZT9505 instead of AZT9500. This model only has battery compartment, necessitating separate batteries (rechargeable or otherwise, alkaline or other). All in all, features are swell and I'm %500 better off having ditched my cassette player. I really appreciate the power-saver mode, too.
Great so far!.......2003-10-11
Ordered a cheap memorex mp3-cd player which broke, then ordered this one and have had no problems! The FM tuner is great because if their is a lot of static or interference, you can switch it to MONO mode which cuts back on the interference and keeps some sound quality. Even though it doesn't have MP3 support I would still recommend it. A+.
great product.......2003-09-07
This is a great cd player. Batteries last an honest 25 hours. Even with the skip protection turned off, to save battery life, it still skips very little. The radio is very sensitive, it gets weak or distant stations that my Koss cassette radio could not get. Price wise, I don't see how you could do better than get this unit. Enjoy it, I certainly am.
Good for Classical Music.......2003-03-13
I recently learned that the word 'icky' was used during the Jazz Age to refer to music that was not jazz, and to the people who liked it. Though I like old jazz, I also like icky music. Recently I have been listening to operas and Haydn's chamber music.
I recommend this portable CD player highly. When I bought some Bose headphones. I was afraid they would reveal the weakness of the player. No, the sound is still good. If all sound reproduction is a more or less convincing lie, this CD player is very persuasive. If it colors the sound (and I don't think it is really reasonable to say it does), it is only to make the sound warmer. High notes are sweet, and the bass is convincing. Even harpsichords sound beautiful because all the overtones are there. I have a boom-box from Philips too. Its sound is wonderful. (Incidentally, I'm glad I got the headphones. The noise-cancelling actually made a jack-hammer outside the window into a small sound, yet I heard the telephone ring, as I was listening with pleasure to one of Haydn's string quartets.)
The radio works well, but not where I live, which is in a basement apartment on the side of a hill. If I place the cord of the earphones just right, I get static-free reception. If I use it outside of the house, it's mostly fine, except among tall buildings.

DO NOT BUY!!!.......2006-12-08
What a piece of junk! Purchased last year - never worked right. Stopped working all together right before warranty ran out; emailed Philips and they never responded back. When we finally spoke with a representative they said the hard drive was shot. Needless to say I was furious with Philips until I read the other reviews - now I've seen the light! I paid well over $100 for this last year - it's much cheaper now - but don't be fooled! JUNK, JUNK, JUNK!!! It doesn't even rate 1 star...
JUNK!!!.......2006-11-24
The first one that I purchased didn't work from day one. Philips sent me a replacement and after 5 months it stopped working. It doesn't turn on and won't charge.
LEMON.......2006-03-31
This item had broken 3 times and it is not dependable. It was repaired twice and still broke again, downloading is an issue, the item is just a poorly made product.
Piece of Junk. Waste of money.......2006-03-23
I bought almost 6 month ago. But lost faith in this after couple of music transfer. I kept the same songs for almost 6 month only due to slow transfer rate and horrible software MusicMatch.
1. It won't let you transfer songs without connecting it to power using AC adapter.
2. you cannot edit title of songs, artist or any sort of things. It automatically picks something I didn't figured out yet. May be if u transfering from original CD it get correct information.
3. This non editing issue lead you to same file name for different songs. Since it does not recognise the same title is already there. ie. u may get. 3 entry as love for 3 different songs.
4. You can not simply drag the folders and get going with playlist names of that folder. You have to creat a playlist name and put songs under them. The entire process is so slow you get frusted in transfering music into this junk.
5. FM channel list gets reset.
6. You cann't do anykind of editing or deletion using unit itself. you have to plug it into computer and power to do anything.
7. Very funny: Even if you haven't created a playlist and put the songs just by dragging you will not be able to play songs.
8. If you have created a playlist and added songs into that. The same songs entry you will find in "All" which you cann't access from unit. Once you want delete the playlist it will just remove the name of playlist. your songs will be in "ALL".
9. I didn't like its earplug, odd design resulted in Bought new one. Since u can't interchange them between ears.
10. If u have draged one file, you have to wait till it finishes. you cann't put things in queue. same with deletion.
Overall this is junk and waste of money.
COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY.......2006-03-08
I bought my philips HDD070 about a year ago and now the thing is dead. When it did work, file transfers were incredibly slow. Also, the software that accompanied this ridiculous excuse of an MP3 player was awful. Every time I put an audio cd into my computer, the program would launch itself, often taking 2 minutes to simply open. I have a brand new lap top, so I doubt it was my computer. I have lost my faith in Philips - Never again will I have anything to do with them as far as MP3 players go.

Amazon.com Product Description
Get into a groove with the EXP2461 CD/MP3 player, which lets you enjoy up to 10 hours of skip-free music on a single MP3-CD. A great choice for workouts, public transit, and other on-the-go use, the device features a heat-resistant body that stands up to rough conditions, along with 100 seconds of electronic MP3 skip protection (45 seconds for CDs), a must for bumpy bus rides or morning jogs. Even better, the variety of compatible formats--which includes not only CDs and MP3s but also home-burned CD-R and CD-RW discs--gives listeners access to more of their digital music collections. Among the unit's playback features are 50-track programming, repeat play (one or all tracks), shuffle play, and resume. The unit also boasts a hold button that keeps you from accidentally activating the device when it's in a purse or backpack, thus preserving battery power.
Audio-wise, the EXP2461 sports a 1-bit digital-to-analog converter that ensures a clean sound, along with a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response. Listeners can also maximize their music enjoyment by activating the Dynamic Bass Boost (DBB), which pumps up the bottom-end frequencies to create a fuller overall sound. The DBB is particularly valuable at lower volumes, which tend to sound tinny without bass enhancement. Additional features include a dual-color LCD display that reveals the CD functions, time and track info, and battery status; a digital volume control; and a pair of stereo headphones. The CD/MP3 player requires two AA batteries, which deliver 15 hours of playing time for CDs and 22 hours for MP3-CDs.
The unit measures 5.5 by 1.1 by 5.5 inches (W x H x D) and weighs less than a half pound. It's also backed by a one-year warranty.
What's in the Box
EXP2461 CD/MP3 player, stereo headphones, user's manual.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Lil' Player.......2007-04-15
This is a great CD player/MP3 Player, no doubt. The biggest complaint everyone seems to have is the battery life. Folks... it's no different than your cell phone... if you yap on it for 8 hours your going to have to recharge the battery. This goes for any battery operated item. A battery only holds so much charge, so the best investment you can buy is a rechargable battery set-up. We use the AA NiMH batteries on ours and have done so for the paste 3 years and it works great everytime. Generally getting about 10 hours of playtime.
We mainly use these as a back-up CD players for our 20 Mobile DJ Set-ups. They have been a great third CD player and have come in handy on more than one occassion, especially when one of the main CD drives goes down. Out of the 20 we use in our systems we have only had to replace 3 of them. Mainly from misuse and abuse. They are very rugged and can take a helluva lotta abuse. We definitely put ours through the ringer.
All in all, I have to say we're pretty satisfied with them. But for us, as a techie-heads, it's time to move on to the next big thing... Portable Blu-Ray players?!?
Underrated.......2006-10-22
Perhaps I was just lucky and got one of these that performed better than the ones that the other reviewers got. But this truly has been the best portable CD player that I have owned to date.
I use rechargable NiMH batteries, so battery life for me was long enough to get about 6-10 hours of use out of this player.
The anti-skip is very effective, I don't think I've ever heard a disc skip while using this player, even some of my more scratched ones.
XBS is fantastic, the sound is rich and full and natural, comparable to Panasonic's SL-SX480, but with MUCH better skip protection on this model than the Panasonic model.
Not to mention the overall look of the player is really quite nice, and it's built like a tank. Yes, it's heavy, but it's durable. In fact, it has been dropped by me on hard pavement about 10 times now, and it just BARELY quit working as a result. I bet your standard Sony wouldnt survive that many hard impacts.
I was quite disappointed to have to buy a replacement CD player to this one because I'd dropped it one too many times. This was a wonderful player and none of the replacements that I have tried so far have been able to match its quality and anti skip protection. A really good model from Phillips.
The only cons I have are as follows:
the CD player does not remember your previous volume setting unless you change discs immediately. If you turn it off or allow it to turn off, you lose your volume setting. No big deal however.
"BEEP" is turned "on" by default. Each time that you power-on the CD player, you must turn off the "BEEP" function or else you'll hear a beep each time you press any button on the player. I think BEEP is a rather useless feature and a pain to turn off each time you want to play a disc.
Battery hog: I am aware that I would probably have gotten two or three days of battery use out of a comparable CD player on the market. This one gives you about 6-10 hours on a NiMH battery. On an alkaline I can only imagine it'd deliver about half that. So yeah, it is a battery hog. But it's still a good player. Invest in recharable batteries, they'll save you a lot of money in the long run.
I don't know why the previous reviewers had so many problems with theirs, but mine served me well, and no replacement I've tried so far has matched it.
Another bad one.......2006-07-23
This disc player is indeed a battery hog, as others have stated. We ate batteries with this player, and the higher the volume, the faster the batters go.
Unfortunately, it also died pretty early in the game--a matter of months.
This item became another soldier in our large and growing dead cd player cemetery.
Not a good discman at all.......2006-06-28
This is a complete battery hog, as another reviewer stated. I could not believe that the battery icon was already showing 2/3rds full after only one cd..ONE. The batteries were dead within 4 cds. This player does not have a very consistent resume feature either. Sometimes it starts over from song one after I have turned the player off. The volume, even at its highest, is not very loud. Even when I turn it down to 2/3rds volume to try and save energy, it still seems to eat up the battery life quickly. I shouldn't have to sacrifice volume for battery life to begin with, but when it does little help, that really upsets me. My sony lasted ten (or more) times longer on two batteries, seriously! Not a good discman and I regret ever buying it.
Junk.......2006-02-16
I thought I was going to get quality with the Philips brand. I was wrong. This CD player will randomly just pause a CD while it's playing. It will also randomly restart a CD from the beginning. This is especially aggravating(and dangerous), as I use this in my car, and have to mess with the unit while driving. I'll be buying a new Sony CD player soon.

Volume Control Resets Itself at Power On!.......2006-05-24
I had to return this unit the day I bought it because I discovered that each time the unit is turned off and on again, the "digital" volume control resets itself to a default setting. Unfortunately, that setting is not my preferred setting. Therefore the product is useless, as I do not care to re-adjust the volume control every single time I turn the unit on! I phoned Philips toll-free number and verified from its support staff that the volume control "does not retain its setting" and can not be made to do so.

Good Player For The Money.......2006-01-02
I bought this CD player because I needed one. This was the cheapest high-quality brand I could find. It's a pretty good player. It has all of the functions most players have (play, plause, rew, ff, back track, forward track, repeat, 50-track programming, scan, and random play). Sound is okay but the bass boost is awful, it doesn't make much of a difference. The side buttons are easy to use which are ESP off/on, mode (to switch your play mode), digital volume, a headphone jack, and the open button. I find it somewhat odd that Philips placed the open button on the right. The hold button is on the back side. The AC adapter plug is on the top. The headphones had good sound but they were not durable; they broke in only a week. There is a battery indicator as well on the screen which seems pretty accurate to me. I don't like that whenever you turn the player off then back on the volume and bass boost settings are changed. The player shuts off when you open the lid, kinda useless but it may be helpful for some. The CD player feels very durable but it weighs a whole lot more than the similar priced Sony player (though I avoided it because the Amazon rating doesn't look too good). All in all, you should be fairly happy with your purchase.

PLEASANTLY PLEASED.......2003-04-01
This radio is a wonderful little product. I got it because the one we had was old and wareing out. Sometimes it has trouble getting one channel, and the weather band doesn't come in much, but other than that, it is perfect. I am trying to convince my husband to get one for his study.
Perfect for my needs.......2003-03-14
Bought this radio regardless of some of the negative reviews. Works great for me. All the bands (TV, weather, AM/FM) come in nice a crisp (I live in Connecticut. Others may have had problems with TV and weather reception due to their geographic location. Just my speculation. Well worth the $.
TV reception is not good.......2001-12-21
I bought this radio mainly to listen to television while working.
With some effort we can find the station but listen to them is not easy. You have to use full volume and this mean low volume to your ears. I have tried others radios and brands with the TV sound feature and they all work poorly. Perhaps a Digital one can deliver more volume but they are expensive. At the price I recoment this PHILIPS since if you are in a quiet room it may be useful.

Ours must be magical.......2001-11-29
We have had one of these in our living room for almost a year, and it's on most of the time. Antenna is good and sturdy. AM reception is great. I love the News/Music option because it really helps improve the reception of various types of signals. FM comes in clear. Since we never listen to the TV/Weather frequencies, I checked them prior to writing this review. Got several broadcast TV stations clearly, and picked up the NOAA weather broadcast weakly, but it was audible and reasonably clear after a little monkeying with the news/music setting and turning up the volume. Perhaps the strength of the broadcast signals in other reviewers' areas is poor. We live in the outskirts of a mid-sized city.
The other thing we've noticed about this radio is that the batteries last FOREVER. We've had this radio run on the same batteries for months, while having it on 12-15 hours a day.
All told, for the price, we are thrilled with the performance of this very simple, low tech radio.
Unfortunately, I fell for the design.......2001-09-26
The look of this radio is the only positive thing on which I can comment. The stations are difficult to tune in, and drift in and out. You can be tuned to a station one minute, and literally 10 minutes later lose it, ending up with nothing but static. Frustrating. The sound is basic as well, even with the low expectations I had.
I also was another one who could not find any television stations (though I did read this was an issue in a prior review). I have logged on tonight to buy another radio and really should return this one since I only got it a few weeks ago. I recommend this product if you only want to look at it, but not turn it on.
