I had a 17" viewsonic CRT before i got this new monitor, and whoa is it a big difference. The text is much sharper, gaming is outstanding on this, and the freed up desk space is pretty nice too. The previous person who said that the picture was blurry had to have been using this at a non-native resolution, because at 1280x1024 it's perfect. It's a clean, professional looking monitor too, and looks far better than some of those other cheapo lcds which look like they were designed by someone who got fired from HP for a lack of creativity.

My only regret is not getting this at 19" instead.

backlight issues.......2006-08-29

I owned this monitor for some time until I was able to finally return it for refund. The unit had backlighting issues - darker blotches visible on dark background/blanked screen. It also suffered from heavier top and bottom backlight bleed, and generally bottom portion of the monitor was brighter then the top no matter the viewing angle. Also, my unit had small but visible gap on the top between the image edge and bezel edge, maybe 1/16" but distracting. I though that I had poor unit but after reading numerous reviews I noticed that more Samsung owners report similar issues - so I think that these problems may be typical for Samsung "consumer type" models in all sizes. Probably not every unit has problems but the percentage of faulty ones appears to be higher - perhaps Samsung's quality control is poor and bad units leave the factory? Now when I decided to get another LCD, instead of Samsung I bought NEC and I'm very happy with it. I'd suggest staying away from mid-range Samsung models.

Reading the above review, I wonder if the reviewer has her resolution set to 1280x1024. That's the native resolution of the LCD, and if it is set to something else, like 1024x768, it will look fuzzy. All LCD monitors do.

Poor quality, dead pixels.......2006-04-28

Very poor quality. Text is often fuzzy and I get a headache from using it. It has lots of dead pixels, too. This monitor sucks. I should have gone for a Viewsonic for lower price. Don't buy this or you'll be wasting your money and doing harm to your eyes.

Perfect size for my desk.......2007-01-05

For what I use this TV for it's perfect. It's small, has a small footprint which is perfect because it's on my desk. The closed caption doesn't turn off when the volume is being adjusted which doesn't happen on any of my other TV's. The picture & sound are fine and the headphone jack on the front is also nice. A nice bonus happened this week when my computer monitor died so I was able to hook up this TV to my computer and function. It was well worth the money.

NEVER AGAIN.......2006-11-25

I used the 15" 3 times when 1/4 of the pixels went out. I contacted the company to no avail. No help, no response, no resolution. I will never buy a Samsung product EVER again and will tell everyone I know. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE- NO- NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I had to give it one star. 0 was not an option.

Samsung LN-R1550 15" LCD EDTV.......2006-11-11

The tv performs as expected - the picture is great and the sound is good. The only problem I have had is that occasionally the sound will stop and I have to turn the tv off and then on again. Not often enough to be a big problem, just so long as it doesn't get worse.

Not too SHARP..........2006-01-13

I originally purchased the LN-R1550 because I liked the fact that it could perform the functions of a tv AND a monitor. Right out of the box, however, my first impression was that it looked too much like a monitor rather than a tv. It's hard to tell from the web pictures, but this "tv" is just a Samsung monitor with an awkward speaker panel attached to the back and sides - not the look I was going for when I purchased for the kitchen.

Picture quality. I must say that the picture quality, when connected to a DVD player was very good. But, as I mentioned, this tv was to live in the kitchen connected to a whole-home video distribution setup via plain old coaxial cable. The satellite picture looked lousy. I even tied it into the receiver with regular RCA cables and it looked no better. These were the same cables that I used when connecting the DVD player (and that picture looked crisp). This last fact is the only reason that I give the tv 3 stars rather than 2.

The small size of this LCD makes it a great candidate for the kitchen. But, kitchen set-ups usually involve coaxial cable. So, the awkward design and poor coax picture forced me to abandon this particular Samsung. During my pre-purchase research, I had been contemplating between this Samsung and the 13" Sharp Aquos. I originally went with the Samsung because it was 2" larger. In this case - in the kitchen - size isn't such a huge deal. I returned the Samsung and got the Sharp. Boy, what a difference!

Not only did the Sharp have a better picture over coax, but it just looks so much more intelligently designed. All the contour lines flow so elegantly. The pictue was better and brighter. I think that the Samsung actually had better depth of sound, but - again - in the kitchen it's not such a huge deal. The smaller size actually was a better fit for the kitchen, too.

The Image quality is very poor on this monitor, I suggest you purchase another brand, or at least, not this monitor. The image is fuzzy, and washed out compared to my old Tube Monitor, so I returned it and purchased another brand.

A very ugly monitor that gives below-average image quality. This is an old model and the contrast, which is difficult to adjust, really hurts your eyes after a few minutes. I think you'll need new glasses if you use this one. There are better products elsewhere (NEC, Kogi, etc.) for the same or better price.

Looking for a gaming LCD? Look no further........2003-01-24

I must confess...after I ordered this, I wondered if I should have just invested in a less expensive CRT, especially since I play a lot of computer games, and LCD's traditionally haven't had the best reputation for gaming, due mostly to technical limitations causing "ghosting" - sort of a temporary after-image. Once this thing arrived and I plugged it in, however, any such notion vanished from my mind.

Bear in mind that I have not had a lot of experience with LCD monitors, as I'm sure most people haven't. I did a bit of research on various sites, including this one. I had it whittled down to a few different choices and I still wasn't entirely sure which monitor I wanted to get. The swing vote came when I stumbled across CNET's recent pick (January) as this as their number one buy for a 15 inch LCD.

The image is bright, it's crisp, and I can see textures that I never even knew were there on my old CRT. I have not one problem gaming with this. I have been playing Warcraft 3, Thief 2, and other games with this thing and they are running smoothly and better than I have ever seen them before. Actually, I should say that at fist, I thought I noticed a slight "ghosting" in Warcraft 3, but I see no such thing now, so make of that what you will; perhaps it was a case of seeing what you expect to see or something. Anyway, I have absolutely no problem playing Serious Sam: The Second Encounter, a somewhat obscure but good first-person shooter, and I notice no ghosting or anything of the sort. You can actually see extremely well in Thief 2, which is saying something since the game is quite dark by design. (I actually had problems with this darkness on my old Compaq CRT.)

Some people have said that text does not show up right or something to that effect. My best guess is that they do not have either the monitor or their computer's display settings set to the native resolution of 1024 x 768, because the text on mine is clearer than I would have ever hoped for, and causes less eye strain than on just about any CRT in my experience. There is also software included to help get the color settings just right.

You do need to have it adjusted to the proper angle in order to have uniform brightness from the top to the bottom of the screen, but I don't see why this should be a problem. Unless you are getting a monitor to watch DVD's on from your couch, you probably do not need a bigger LCD than this. I would even say that any bigger might be too much, unless you are planning on mounting it on a wall or something. Keep in mind that the 15 inches is the actual (diagonal) size of the viewing area, whereas when sizes are used to describe CRT's, the viewing area is less than the stated size...don't ask me why; that's just the way it is. So, if you want to know how big the screen is, get out a tape measurer and measure out 15". That is the distance from the top-left corner of the display area to the bottom-right. That is just the display area - NOT the whole monitor, which is actually slightly bigger. It's probably bigger than you would have thought.

It even comes with a 3 year warranty on parts and labor. Some other companies' warranties, such as NEC's (according to some of the reviews I have read), allow for so many "dead pixels". To the best of my knowledge, Samsung has no such "gotcha" policy.

All in all, I would say this is a great buy if you are in the market for a new monitor and want to jump into the twenty-first century. CRT's are still cheaper though, so it really depends on how much you want to spend.

This is my first LCD monitor, ever...
And I love this Samsung 151S model..!!!

I wanted to buy a better and more recent model from
Samsung, when I got an extra hundred dollars...
So, I thought I would return this monitor for a better one
when it arrives. But, when I opened it up
and started using it... I didn't see any reason why
I should pay hundred dollars more for another model...
I couldn't part from this monitor after seeing how
bright and sleek it looked on my desk...

One downside to this model is that the response time
of the LCD crystals isn't fast enough...which means
you will see blurring of pixels when something scrolls
or moves along a path... But you get used to it
pretty quickly. Also, certain colors tend to create
cell shading like effect on cartoons, creating lines around where two colors touch. But this is very minor..and really
won't bother you much...although as a person doing
graphics, it catches my eyes...

This monitor has great color...
With high contrast and brightness...I'm seeing more
detail on my past graphic works and also a lot of mistakes
I couldn't see before...

Text is very clear, so don't even worry about that...

Adjustment is easy and simple...but for left-handed people,
I guess it could get irritating trying to get to the control
placed on the right. But who in the world changes their
monitor settings everytime they use their computer?!!

Although some say LCD screens are not suitable for

people who do graphics, I think this monitor is good enough
for any computing needs... It prevents eye-strain when doing
graphic works for hours on straight... And high contrast
all the time means consistant color hues... This monitor does
have a short vertical angle view, although it's the same for
most other competitors... I guess that is the only downside to
this monitor as a graphics person... But the newer Samsung
models have wider angle views and higher contrast ratios, which

should eliminate such small nags... If LCD screen isn't good
for graphics, then why are Macs coming out various LCD screens?
And look at the new imac..!! So don't be afraid if you heard
such words before... LCDs are for everyone...

The final word is...
For the money, this is a steal~!!!
So, if you just have to have a LCD screen now,
but can't afford more expensive ones...but also
don't wanna buy some [rotten] LCD you'll regret buying...

It arrived with NO set-up instruction other than a CD that was so confusing even my expertise could not comprehend.

I spent hours on the phone with Samsung techs but never got a decent picture only to discover that the picture loses a great deal of brightness when viewed other than straight on. Side view might be OK but the slightest deviation up or down is a disaster. Also note that several of the controls on the remote don't work. Also note that the remote control arrived without a battery and NO ONE including Samsung could determine what battery it was supposed to be....

I wasted 2 days trying to make this puppy work. Dont waste YOUR time.

Don't make the same mistake I did! I signed up for one of those get-Samsung-LCD TV-free "offers" that are continually being posted here.

Within one day, I received over 200 spam emails and 15 telemarketing calls. What a pain. I guess there really is something to the saying "you can't get something for nothing".

I hope everybody here will learn from my extremely bad experience and avoid these ridiculous pyramid schemes.

Great for car and using with Xbox, playstation game systems.......2005-01-13

I was looking for a 13 to 15" LCD screen to hook-up to my son's XBox gaming system for traveling in the car. Now they can play XBox games, and, along with the XBox-DVD-player/remote the kids can also watch DVD movies. Compared to other automotive solutions that are sold for DVD movie/gaming combinations .... I think that this just might be the ultimate solution. I plan to "securely hang" the Samsung SyncMaster 510MP 15" LCD Monitor between and behind the 2 front seats of my minivan. They'll be able to play dual or split-screen type of video games such as Halo. Watching movies from the 3rd row of seats will also be possible. Basically the Samsung SyncMaster 510MP 15" LCD Monitor is plug and play for hooking up to the XBox or Playstation; just plug the video/audio inputs - yellow, red and white into the matching female holes in the SyncMaster 510MP. Nothing else is required other than having a "power converter" to plug-in the monitor and the game system.

The LTN1565 flat-panel LCD TV offers a native image resolution of 1,024 x 768, enhanced by a high (400:1) contrast ratio, impressive peak brightness of 450 candles/square meter, and wide (150 degrees vertical, 120 degrees horizontal) viewing angles. Set it on a table, counter, or desktop using the supplied stand, or mount it on the wall picture-style, with an optional mounting kit. The television sports stereo speakers with 3 watts audio power per channel.

When used with an optional DTV receiver, it accepts full-resolution HDTV signals, including 720p and 1080i (1080i signals are scaled to fit the set's native resolution). The LTN1565's digital comb filter enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

For connections, the set offers two component-video inputs--one for standard-definition interlaced signals and one capable of full HD (480p/720p/1080i) signals--and one each composite-video, S-video, and standard RF (for older VCRs and cable boxes). Here is the text of a letter I have sent to Samsung's Customer Service:

"I am writing after spending the last two hours making ten telephone calls in the futile attempt to get my three year old Samsung LCD television repaired. I purchased the television, model number LTN1565 S, at J & R Music and Computer World on 4 June 2004. It functioned without any problems for three years, long enough for the warranty to expire. A few weeks ago, the power switch stopped working consistently; the television did not come on when I pressed the power button, but if I waited until the green light stopped blinking and pressed the button again, the television would come on and function perfectly. Yesterday, however, it would not come on at all.

"Today, I called Samsung's customer service number to find out whether it would be possible to get the television repaired, since I had been very pleased with it until this point, and I was reluctant to throw away a very expensive item that was only three years old. The customer service representative I spoke to first said that I should contact CVE, Inc. When I dialed the number he had given me for CVE, Inc., it turned out to be Samsung again. I stayed on the line and spoke to another customer service representative, who gave me the correct number for CVE, Inc. But when I called CVE, Inc., at first I was unable to reach a representative; when I called back a second time, I was told I needed a transaction number before they would give me any information. That turned out to mean another two calls to Samsung. Once I had the transaction number and called CVE, Inc. again, the news got worse: the representative there told me that I would have to pay $80.25 just to get the television evaluated, whether or not the repair turned out to be feasible; when I asked whether I could get any more information before I spent the $80, I was given a telephone number that was supposed to be the technical staff but turned out just to be Samsung's customer service again. When I called Samsung yet again to find out if there was any alternative, and to voice my anger at being asked to pay $80 just to find out whether an expensive television that was only three years old could be repaired, the representative did not seem to understand why I was indignant; he said that this just was Samsung's policy and reproached me for not getting an extended warranty (which no one had offered me when I bought the television three years ago). He was probably too young to realize that I could compare my experiences with Samsung's customer service to experiences with other companies. I asked him whether he would spend the $80 himself, and he said he would if it were him, but as it turned out, he'd have been making a big mistake. When I finally called CVE, Inc. yet again (the tenth phone call of the afternoon), the representative there was honest enough to admit that the repair would probably cost more than $400, an obvious waste of money.

"So I will not be buying any more Samsung products, since I can't afford to throw large amounts of money away on disposable electronics and inferior customer service. I will also be posting copies of this letter on consumer product review sites. I have no wish to malign Samsung, but purchasers need to know that your tacit slogan is 'Let the buyer beware.' For attractive design Samsung is hard to beat, but for customer care and real value, quite a few companies leave you in the dust."
