Tremendous Value - Used on new Macbook.......2007-09-01
I am using this monitor with my new Macbook. I figured since law school will require lots of research, extending my desktop a bit would be wise. So far I have used the extra space to arrange calendar events with work, ran multiple internet browsers at once, arranged files on my hard-drives, and completed a research project with word and safari.
The monitor is plug & play. It does not come with a $30 cord, regardless, it's still the best. On Macbooks you need a mini-dvi to dvi-d converter, and you can get them online here at Amazon, but make sure you order it from the United States for shipping length purposes. Also, the cord that runs from that converter to the monitor need only be 3 feet unless you're working with an unusual amount of distance between your monitor and your notebook. I have no experience running from a desktop, but then a 6 ft. cord should be effective but you'll want to measure and please buy it online, it's a dvi-D cable. And you need a double-male headed cord, because if you don't then it won't fit.
That's all you need, and sold for an incredible price. When I started using computers regularly, at age 13, a monitor like this a) wasn't around; and b) was out of this universe expensive when it finally was available. You wouldn't have scoffed to see this monitor priced for $2000, 6 years ago. A flat-screen saves a tremendous amount of space than the old tube-monitors; and wide-screen essentially adds another workable document into the concurrent tasking situation.
On my computer, I can extend my desktop, or I can have mirrored desktops. The resolution is very good, too. Macbook users won't have to worry about any weird resolution as indicated by other reviews. Take my word, you'll be fine, but if you're doing insane graphic stuff you should do hard research on screen resolutions; thankfully I am not. The operating system in Macbook handles everything automatically. You don't need to figure anything else out.
For laptop users, this machine gives the best of both worlds: the portability of a laptop; the screen-size of a desktop. Used with an external mouse, you can create a fantastic work station, nothing more. It has its own A/C plug because it is not powered from the computer itself, so you should making room on your surge protector for this one!
Negatives: 1) Does not come with $30 cable; 2) requires a dvi-d converter for many laptops; 3) doesn't adjust height/angle; 4) not a glossy screen.

the monitor came quickly and set-up was very easy. this is my first widescreen monitor, and it does s-t-r-e-t-c-h out everything a bit, but not so much that it distorts. I'm really enjoying the larger screen.
Two defective units, so far..........2007-08-13
The first 941BW had a pink vertical line of pixels running from bottom to top in the middle of the screen. It showed up after 2 days of usage, and remained sporadically. There would be days when it would disappear. I think there was also a dead/stuck pixel somewhere in the bottom right.
I RMA'ed it with Samsung, and got ANOTHER defective unit. The second one has no pixel problems, but when on a dark/black screen, you can see vertical streaks of light leaking through. There's no word of the problem and I don't know of a way to fix it. So, going through another RMA with Samsung. Two units, two defects. This is my first Samsung product, and as a matter of fact my first LCD. Horrible experience so far. Total waste of my time. If the third one has a defect too, I'm going to chew out their customer service reps and demand a free monitor.
Aside from the defects however, the monitor is pretty good. The form factor is nice, although not the fancy glossy frame like the other Samsung models. Pictures are bright and have had no problems with gaming, as far as I can tell. Please Samsung, just don't send me any more defective units!

Attached the video cable and everthing looked good and worked fine. Used the monitor on a Dell system using XP home. Have not tried to use it with Vista. The company web site does not provide information about using the monitor with Vista.

I got my first one with a cluster of 7 dead pixels right in the middle of the screen. Amazon took great care of me, and this one only has one on the very left side. I like its colors and resolution. I recommend it.

I bought this monitor, had a damaged screen in shipping and after a replacement arrived I had three side-by-side comparisons (HP w2408, and Gateway 24") with the exceptions noted earlier, (no portrait rotation and optional inputs) this is by bar the best bang-for-the-buck under $500! Why pay $200+ more for basically the same thing... If you need to rotate the screen (portrait) you can buy one of several mounting stands that can do this and still save you the money! Even buy a multi switch adaptor (and still save money) and have better results. Yep, it's a keeper!
Oh, why do I (you) need a monitor this big? Well first-of-all, my eyes are getting older now (presbyopia) and instead of buying expensive computer glasses, this screen lets me see everything ... no glasses and a LOT more real-estate and its future proofed with the forthcoming HD DVD and BLUE Ray technology! I was a 20" CRT hold-out (digital arts and photography) but this color calibrated perfectly, no artifacts, and only time will tell, but saving a few hundred bucks on comparable monitors let me invest this money into a fee moving stand and a switchbox.. that can of course be used with other monitors should I ever need... I am thinking about getting yet another one that will provide full range of vision perspective and it defiantly saves me time as I have many windows open and VISTA seems to shine in hi-res 1080p!

We've long used Samsung 21.3 monitors in our offices, with no complaints to date....but needed additional monitors for some new staff. Frankly, I expected an "okay" monitor given the price was simply far better than other 24" monitors. But, I was more than thrilled to find these monitors are nothing short of a "best buy".
The Lazy Susan-style monitor base wasn't something I was looking for specifically, but it has been a great bonus - to be able to EASILY swivel the HUGE monitor without a struggle or without pushing a barely reachable button has been a great benefit. Most of our users are now enjoying dual monitors...two of these wonderful monitors next to each other make for amazing display capabilities.
I'm running both monitors on an nVidia Gforce 7800 Dual DVI card and must confess I don't see much difference between running a digital and an analog side by side as the other staff are doing....but, this observation just illustrates how clear these monitors are, digital or analog mode!
Of the initial 8 monitors I ordered, I did have to return one due to a "plastic burning smell" and a rather hot-to-the-touch area atop the monitor, but the return process was fairly easy (still waiting on the replacement monitor though). I've just ordered another 10 monitors. Staff who only have one monitor are also thrilled with how many programs they can manipulate on a single monitor.

I was a little concerned about the monitor being damaged during the IL to CA ground shipping but it arrived on time and undamaged. Out of the box it comes fully assembled.
I was delighted to see ZERO dead pixels when first turning it on. The default brightness setting is 100/100 which is WAY to high--you'll think you've died and gone to heaven. I toned mine down to 40 and was thoroughly pleased and indeed felt like I WAS in heaven @ 1920 resolution, WOW!!!
The included CDROM with the MagiColor software is NOT necessary for the monitor. In fact it conflicts with the Nvidia control panel on any Nvidia cards resulting in system crashes. Simply use the controls on the monitor to make adjustments. The software does not enhance the quality or performance of the monitor whatsoever.
Make sure your video card supports 1920 resolution before buying this monitor. This thing was engineered to display @ 1920 res and anything less compromises the quality of the display and you'll simply be wasting your money by buying this and using it @ 1600 res or less.
Some reviewers noted an uneven distribution of color and quality on the bottom half of the monitor. I have NOT SEEN THIS on my monitor. I do not use photo editing software however and all the reviewers who have complained about this are doing photo editing. So be warned this MAY be a problem but I haven't noticed it.
The monitor does not come with any unnecessary integrated "extras". No USB ports or speakers -- which cuts down on the bulkiness of the monitor.
My only partial complaint about the monitor is a lack of Portrait mode -- the ability to turn the widescreen monitor lengthwise to obtain a larger reading area for documents. I should say however that @ 1920 res I can see ALOT more webpages and documents than I could at 1280 res on my old 19" LCD. So its not that big of a concern. Reading is still vastly easier and more comfortable than before.
Pros: Great price, no bulky integrated extras (USB ports, speakers, etc.), comes fully assembled, no software to install, excellent Samsung quality (zero dead pixels).
Cons: No portrait mode (but still vastly superior to reading at 1280 or 1600 resolution).
High Quality 24" Monitor for the Money.......2007-07-28
Love Amazon and purchase most items online but we shopped 'manually' at several stores so we could directly compare monitor picture quality side-by side. Saw a good price and purchased this same Samsung SyncMaster 245BW monitor for the same price from Best Buy ($549). Easy installation, worked perfectly out of the box. Bright colors, great contrast, crisp, clean fonts (I use 'true type'), etc. Using 1920X1200 resolution to get the best picture and correct picture aspect ratio, which works fine with my Lenovo T60 laptop. We are simply delighted. Perhaps not a coincidence -- my wife and I have owned several other Samsung SyncMaster monitors over the years -- always a solid price-performer.

Problems after 6 months........2007-08-18
After 6 months of using the monitor it started to develop problems. The adjustment buttons on the front of the monitor are randomly going off. It is still under warranty, but the closest repair center is 400 miles away and I have to pay for the shipping both ways! It still works, but the buttons going off by themselves are very annoying.

I bought this monitor to replace a Dell monitor that died. The price is good and the image is clear (probably better than the Dell it replaced). My only complaint is that the brightness, contrast, etc. buttons are small with black on black images, and they're hard to read. This is not a giant problem, since I set them once and haven't needed them since.

I ordered this moniter for use at work. I didn't notice a difference, until I saw a co-workers moniter after a days use of the Samsung. The image of the Samsung is better, and the adjustable height is great. My neck used to be sore after work, now it feels great.

This monitor has excellent quality and features for a very affordable price. I wanted a nice monitor for use with my laptop (an Apple Powerbook) at my desk, and this product immediately recognized my computer and gave me no problems at all -- just plug it in and go! The screen can be used in both portrait and landscape modes, and extensively adjusted up/down and side-to-side. I've found that it is a little wobbly in the direction of rotation (portrait/landscape), but perhaps this can be adjusted. The monitor is quite bright, and has excellent color, resolution, and especially contrast. I had originally wanted a silver monitor to match my laptop (and this product only comes in black), but this monitor actually has better specifications for the price than some of the other Samsung models available in silver. You won't be disappointed by this product, and I'd definitely buy another Samsung monitor again!

Stunning Monitor.......2007-07-25
This monitor is out-of-the-box-gorgeous. Zero dead pixels, no lag, gorgeous color and detail without any over saturation. Height adjustment is one-hand simple and smooth. I am running this montior on a Mac Book Pro as the secondary montior at full 2560x1600 resolution. The O/S is Windows Vista using Apple Bootcamp. I couldn't be happier.

I was disappointed.......2007-08-05
I have been using a 15" dell flat screen monitor at my home. I needed a new monitor for my office, and decided to upgrade my home monitor with this 17" Samsung, and take the Dell to work.
The resolution on the Samsung was disappointing. Simple type was slightly muddy. I played with the various controls, finally came to the conclusion that the product is inferior to the inexpensive Dell monitor I already had. When I unplugged the Samsung, and replaced it with the Dell, I was relieved! Much easier on the eyes.
I took the Samsung to my office, and placed it at a workstation that doesn't get much use :-(
Next time I purchase a monitor, I'm going to go to an actual store (!) (something I don't do much anymore) and look at the screen before I make my purchase.
My advise is the same to you. Make sure that you are happy with what you see. You're probably going to spend a lot of hours staring at this thing.

Good picture, good price and no dead pixels in either of the Samsung Syncmasters thet I bought (a 17" and a 19"). I have seen better pictures on other monitors but not for this price. I am very pleased with both of my Samsungs.

This LCD screen was very easy to hook up - via regular monitor port - and the software easy to install and useful. Having only worked with CRTs, I was amazed at the clarity of the screen, the vivid colors and the total lack of any missing pixel problems that I've read about other screens I researched here. The software was helpful in calibrating the screen for my specific use and home environment. And, it was easy to use as well.
The price was right, the shipping was great - fast and free ! One problem though -- UPS left the box right outside my apartment door. It's a large building with a school directly across the street. Ths was a definite no-no!
That aside, I am very pleased with this item and recommend it.

Excellent monitor........2007-04-27
The picture is excellent for an LCD. It has lots of different video inputs. It's huge and has high resolution. It's bright and has excellent contrast and color. I want a second one to go dual screen. I have no regrets at all about buying this monitor.
There are some minor negatives but they're largely nit picking.
While it has PIP, it only works while one of the computer inputs is the main screen and it can only show one of the composite/s-video/component inputs in the PIP which must be selected via the menus.
When looking at a 1080i signal over the component input, it apparently either stretches the image to 1200 pixels high (throwing off the aspect ratio) or it stretches in both directions which would require cutting off a little bit on the sides. Either way it's wrong. 1920x1080 on a 1920x1200 16:10 screen should be 1920x1080 16:9 with 60 pixel high black bars on the top and bottom (letterboxed).
I tried hooking my cable box up to the DVI port, the box complains that the monitor doesn't support HDCP and refuses to work which is rather irritating. I've read on a few sites that this monitor supports HDCP so I suppose it could be a problem with the box but I suspect it's the monitor.
It would be nice if it had a remote control to modify settings.

I spend all day every day in front of my computers, & have been doing so for 25 years. This monitor is the best monitor I have ever seen, bar none. There are no dead pixels. It is bright, with no ghosting. It has become my preferred venue for watching movies. The included software works well at re-orienting the monitor to vertical mode or horizontal mode. It also adapts nicely to 16:9 formats or 4:3 formats. It is very easy to set up, with a plethora of cabling options. My one complaint is the hokey USB cable that projects from the left side of the monitor. But I'm happy to live with that, given all of the other virtues this monitor exhibits.

I got my new 244t 2 days ago. My previous monitor was a Samsung 213t, which served me well, thus I was ready to trust Samsung again. The 213t was a great monitor, and before I saw this new one in action, I thought it was quite good for gaming too (it was, of course, but switching back from this one it isn't anymore). But looking at how things move and are displayed by this new monster is like going from night to day. Pictures are the sharpest I have ever seen, World of Warcraft simply looks fantastic at 1920x1200 and most of all there isn't the slightest amount of ghosting even in the most problematic situations (using DVI, fo course). Add to this all inputs and configuration options you could ask for, and that's it. Don't miss it...it's more expensive than equivalent models from other companies, but it's worth.

This monitor is simply gorgeous. Crisp gaming and crisp text, no ghosting, AND it is HDTV compliant for now and future standards when the new version of MS windows comes out (something the Dell and other competing 24" LCD's do not have). Its brighter and better color than "cheaper" gateway and Dell 24-inchers that people like CNET seem to be in love with. I have seen the Dell 24" and next to this monitor the colors in the Dell looked washed out and it is not as bright. Also Dell 24" monitors have had a problem with the power supply (loud high pitch sound) that is widely reported and I have heard many complaints of the runaround trying to get it corrected. Go for high quality, its worth the few extra dollars.
You have to see this monitor to believe it. Bright, excellent contrast, and black actually looks really black.
I agree with USB hub comment stated by other reviewer on Amazon. Its the only thing that could be improved. But I did not buy this monitor because I needed two more USB ports.
Samsung has an excellent reputation for high quality LCD's. Zero dead pixels on mine when it arrived. Just keep in mind that you need a decent video card to get the most out of this (or any other 24") monitor. Make sure you are aware of the video card you have and if it will be adequate.

Got my monitor yesterday, and I have but a small comment to make, since I need to get back to some serious fun using my newest electronic device :o)
This monitor has by far exceeded my expectations in regards to design and quality. It not only looks good, but it came with out-of-the-box 100% perfect configuration. The colors are clear, black is really black and the fast responsetime leaves absoluely no trace at all when things are flying around your screen.
I'm still not quite grasping the magnitude of this screen, but rest asure that I will spend a fair amount of time in front of this 24" wonder the next couple of years.
The only minus to this product is the incredible stupid usb hub that they have placed on the left side of the monitor. The idea is good, since it's very easy to plug in your usb key or whatever you'd feel like. The bad thing is that they have placed the plug which connects the hub with your computer the same place, which means that if you want to use the hub, you need to live with a black cable sticking out at an 90 degree angle midway down the left side of your newly bought minimalistic marvel... That is not going to happen in my house! The cure - forget about the lousy 2 port hub and start enjoying what ever you enjoy doing with your computer only this time it'll be bigger, better and just all out breathtaking.

was not disappointed. 8-bit true 16.7 million colors, wide viewing angle, PVA panel very good deal. Most every LCD screen now a day is TN panel.
Buy One if a cheap accurate display is what your looking for and you don't really care for gaming.
True 8/24 Bit Color.......2006-07-29
Note that this is a true 16.7 million (8/24 bit) color unit, but it "pays the price" with only a 20mS response time, therefore, four stars.
Monitors with 16.2 million (6/18 bit) colors actually have only a bit more than 262,000 colors. The 16.2 million claimed colors are obtained by dithering and tricking your eye/brain into "seeing" colors that aren't really there. By using only 6 bits instead of 8 bits for R, G, & B, the manufacturers can greatly reduce the response time down to a speedy 8mS.
Your choice - true colors or fast response, but both in the same unit are $$$.
I've got the 940T for color work, and two 730B units (6 bit, 8mS) for additional work space, and for the occasional movie. The difference in colors and smearing/ghosting are noticeable when the monitors are side-by-side and displaying the same material.
Problem with dark shades.......2006-03-11
I bought this hoping to do photo editing work but sadly the color accuracy of this monitor's PVA panel is quite poor in the dark shades. Basically, dark shades are drawn as pure black or very near black, without any subtlety or gradation. I had to return it for a monitor that uses an S-IPS panel and I'm much, much happier with it, although the price was considerably higher.
Everything else about this monitor is great so if color accuracy in the dark shades isn't important to you then it is highly recommended. The ergonomics are very good, the latency is better than I expected, brightness and contrast are both very good, and of course sharpness is excellent with a DVI connection. Mine had no dead or stuck pixels. I'd like to give it a higher rating but I really expected better color accuracy from a modern display.
Don't be seduced by claims of 1000:1 contrast because in reality it doesn't matter very much. For example, many of the very high-end multi-thousand-dollar professional displays with integrated calibrators do no better than 500:1.
Great Monitor, HORRIBLE Documentation.......2006-02-06
I have just purchased this monitor which I absolutely LOVE, but caveat emptor: the documentation for setting it up and using it was obviously written in Korean (by a very bright 5 year old) and then translated by dictionary alone. It does not come with a simple set-up sheet, which meant that it took me 15 minutes to figure out why it would not even turn on. ANSWER: you must turn the monitor upside down and flip the main power switch which is invisible unless the monitor is flipped. The front power switch only works then. Also it came with two sets of cables to attach to the cpu and (as they were unmarked save in Korean) I erronesouly attached the analog ones and did not know that.
Documenation aside, it is a very nice looking all-black simple monitor, the stand adjusts nicely, (vertically and you can flip the screen from portrait to landscape), and the clarity is great.

the only glitch was software ...the monitor does not magically display the pictures or desktop when you rotate the monitor you must right click and select. The display is perfect. Worth the little extra money. It's value and quality far above the myriad of all the others. As a photographer I can really evaluate my work. If I need photoshop it's now a pleasure to work with.
Flat Panel Monitor.......2007-01-05
My monitor came with a dark "smudge" in the top right corner - since it doesn't interfere with anything, I left it alone. I don't have any random pixels on the screen or any bright spots. The color and tone are excellent.
This monitor is easy to adjust color space and set up a color profile to use with my pro photo printer. WYSIWYG
It's a great monitor although I think I'd get the 24" if I could have a do over.
Great quality picture but noticable input lag.......2006-11-22
Picture quality is beautiful. The stand is sleek, sturdy & adjustable. This monitor is awesome in every way except for the fact that there is some input lag. Basically what that means is there's a small delay between mouse movements and movements of the on screen cursor. Input lag is an issue that affects larger LCD monitors, notably S-PVA, S-MVA, and Overdrive-TN panels. Most people may not notice it... it's very minor... yet gamers might get annoyed by it. I'm not a gamer, but I definately can feel the lag, especially when compared to a CRT. I've kind of gotten used to it by now but I'd rather live without the lag.

Excellent aspect ratio and working area. Superb sharpness, color, brightness, contrast, build quality. No bad pixels so far. Good software functionality. A lower minimum stand height and easier-to-use software would make it perfect.

This is a great monitor. I love it because it can be used in either prtrait mode or landscape mode.
