Like every other electronic device, I've lost the charger. I figure not problem since this device has a USB charger intereface. But wait, it DOESN'T WORK. You seem to have to use their SPECIAL charger interface which of course I can't find anywhere.

Oh well. This device locks up after a few songs. Time to buy an IPOD I guess.

I have had almost zero problems with this .......2005-05-10

This product has performed as expected for me and I have not had the software problems that some others obviously have experienced. I have also found the product easy to use and it works perfectly with my laptop. I had some issues with setup, but nothing that I could not solve myself with some general monkeying round. I have about 16GB of music loaded on mine and it works fine every time I use it. My only complaints are battery life seems a bit short and the manual is not very good. Also, I agree that the design is not as attractive as the ipod. Overall I'm very satisfied.

Software Problem.......2005-03-01

Generally Samsung MP3 players are very weak because of their poorly designed softwares. I bought YP-925GS and had to return it because of software issues and this unit uses the same software. I have been given Samsung MP3 players in the past for free and same issues with poor software.

this product is god awful and has been nothing but trouble since I recieved it as a christmas gift last year. the first one I owned was defective fresh out of the package- none of the controls would respond (and yes, the hold button was off and yes, the battery was fully charged). i got best buy to exchange the player for a functional one and while adding tracks to it from my computer this brand new 2nd player froze up and ceased to work. after re-setting it, it became totally non-responsive; I'd turn it on, the blue lights would appear, but the screen would stay blank. I went through hell trying to get Samsung to repair it and once they finally agreeded to and sent my player back to me the same glitch occurred while transferring music to it via my cd player.

also, if you have a software problem you can't get Samsung to help you since the software is by Napster (and they don't communicate w/ Samsung). So if you have to call customer service prepare to be on the phone forever.

Please don't buy this product, it'd be better to just flush your $400.00 down the toilet. In a rush to cash in on the iPod market they released this player full of bugs. F**ck this thing.

This has to be the worst MP3 player ever made! Mine has been in the shop THREE times in the six months I have owned it. Everytime it is the hard drive failing. This started out as a good idea but they missed the boat on this one. Samsung makes great other products but they should stay out of the MP3 player business. Buy a Rio or Ipod! I warned you!!

Useless player and unhelpful incompetent staff.......2003-01-06

I bought this about 1 year ago and have had to send the unit back 6 times so far. Every time I send it back it takes at least 4 weeks before it is returned to me. To date I have sent it back 3 times for the headphone jack (the ... headphones worked but the headphone socket has problems) and 3 times battery connection. The battery connections are very cheap and very fragile. Just putting the battery in could cause them to snap. It has now been over 2 months since I have sent it back and it looks like they have lost my unit. Now they refuse to refund me as I have had it for too long. I have notified the FTC (US consumer protection as far as I can figure out).

The menu system is NOT user-friendly, it regularly freezes or pauses even when just walking with it. The headphones are very cheap (as mentioned). If I could give it negative stars I would, it is a zero out of ten, a zero out of a google. Don't waste your money on this! Burn it,it would bemore interesting and giveyou more gratification.

I have owned the NEO Jukebox for over a year now and can now say that I have somewhat mastered the rig! I recently changed the hard drive from a 20gb, which came with the NEO to a 30gb IBM Travelstar. I have over 6000 songs on the 30gb and am quite happy with it. I have an aux. in on my car stereo to which I connected a "splitter" from "The Shack" and together with another "splitter" for the line out (headset) on the NEO I have complete compatability with my Car Stereo. This was the main reason for going thru the exercise of adapting to my car stereo. I now have sufficient sounds for any length trip into the unknown with no more accompanying "commercial" necessities and the unit plays flawlessly. Compared to the "overly advertised" IPOD and the overpriced Archos, I would say there is no competition for the NEO!

After searching and searching for "the perfect MP3 player, I saw this add and got curious and did more reasearch and was given this as my 50th birthday gift! It is big- 4 1/2" X 6" X 1 1/4"; it has wonderful sound; it holds 600 CDs; it has a lithium-ion rechargeable battery with AC recharger; and it operates with Windows 95/98/ME/2000 and MAC O/S 9 and above. One complaint is that all functions are done through the function key, e.g., volume. the bulkiness means you've got to figure out your own way you want to use it. I love the case becaue it allows me to put it around my neck or shoulder and clean house or go and be submerged in it great sound. In other words, this is no small player to toss in your packet and run with. It does have the ability to buty the unit to play in your car and charge through the car's power. I love it, and it comes with its own software to download CDs to MP3.

In the four months I've owned this puppy, I've managed to put it through its paces across several different platforms. And there are many good things to report about the Neo Jukebox. But there are a few serious disappointments as well.

First, the bad. Though advertised as "Mac compatible", it is, strictly speaking, PowerPC compatible. That is, it takes advantage of the fact that Macs have the ability to read PC-formatted disks. This is not the same, in my mind, as true Mac compatibility, because it means that you may encounter problems if you change its basic boot information in any way from its factory configuration. Indeed, I have lost all ability to see this drive on my Macintosh simply because I renamed it. Nor can it be reformatted as a Mac disk. Worst of all, the documentation gives Mac users only a cursory inclusion, and the supporting website is clearly weighted towards PC (and, really, Win 9x) users.

It's not that this device doesn't work properly under the Mac OS. It's that it works inflexibly. You can't really change it from its out-of-the-box configuration if you're using it on a Mac, and that's unfortunate.

Another problem: lag time. Navigation through songs on this device is sometimes noticibly slow. It can take several seconds to climb out of one folder and into another--which can be a problem if you intend using this to facilitate any kind of public performance. There's also the issue of organization. It can take you a little while to get all your music in an order that makes navigation faster. Because the Neo Jukebox organizes simply alphabetically, it can be hard, at first, figuring out the best way to organize your files. Importantly, too, this device will play only mp2 and mp3 files. You can store files of any kind, but these are the only it will recognize as playable.

These problems aside, however, there's much to cheer about this device.

It's extremely durable. I've been able to take it everywhere without problems. The included carrying case and hard outer shell of the device itself do a lot to protect it from damage.

It also has a huge amount of space. 20 GB is the standard amount, which is well beyond that of most MP3 players. Even better, this amount can be expanded, later, by buying a bigger capacity drive and slipping it into place. The expandability of this device isn't widely publicized, even by I/O Magic, but theoretically, you could build an infinitely massive library of music--as long as you didn't mind having it divided up into 20-40GB blocks. I could well see this as an excellent way to back up an entire radio station's music library without taking up any more space than a shoebox.

Unlike the problems mentioned above with Macs, this thing works like a dream on Windows-based machines. I've never had the slightest problem getting this thing recognized by Win 95/98SE/2000. Transfers of small numbers of files are very fast, but the initial transfer of all your music from your computer to your Jukebox can be an overnight affair.

However, if you're going to be doing any kind of massive backup, you may find it useful to buy a laptop drive adapter and simply plug it into your motherboard, completely bypassing the USB hookup. This will cut your transfer time to mere minutes. Also, it will allow you to repartition your drive and fully re-format it in the case of periodic problems that eventually befall most hard drives.

Finally, there's the sheer versatility of the Neo. You can use it to port any kind of file. This makes it essentially like buying a jukebox and an Iomega Peerless all in one--at a cheaper price. You can take it running with you. You can plug it into your car's stereo system (with an add-on adapter). You can even run it through your home stereo system. It even comes with a full version of MusicMatch, a powerful competitor to Apple's beloved music management software, iTunes. Long lacking in the Windows enviornment, you'll finally be able to have complete control over your music library with a single interface. In some ways, this included software (or at least its latest incarnation) provide more features than iTunes, including the very useful feature of normalizing tracks. This defeats one of the major problems of digitalized music: songs having widely varying volumes.

The Neo Jukebox is thus a powerful performer with some important limitations. On balance, it's probably the best total solution to your portable digital needs. There are other devices which are better mp3 players for Mac users, or that transfer files faster out of the box, or even that switch between files faster. But there's really not another product that will let you do as many as many different things on as many different platforms--and that come in as sturdy a box--as the NeoJukebox. The only one that currently comes close is Creative's Nomad player, so be sure you take a look at that model when shopping. Mac users should really consider the iPod as well, because, even though it doesn't have quite the same capacity, its FireWire connecftivity and complete compatibility with the MacOS and iTunes itself make up for the lower capacity.

I just purchased this product clearence at a local book/music store, and I must say I am impressed so far. 20 GB capacity is a decent capacity. the display is big, nice blue back light easy to read. I have figured out how to make playlists, and it sorts songs by group. you can drop and drag files to the unit, or use Musicmatch to sync with the unit as well. Works a hard drive on the drop and drag. It comes with everything from power/charger cord, connection cables to computer and stero system, and a case. Also headphones to boot. Software disc as well. Only drawback is that the battery has lasted me between 5-6 hours when loading songs, have not seen how long it last with playing only. Also, it has locked on me a couple of times, but the reset button works ok without wiping hard drive, but worrys me. Not a bad player.

Don't Get Tricked by Ad Language.......2006-08-10

I had this product for a little over a year without a warranty. I used it primarily for MP3 recordings. It died one day. The buttons stick, its operation was confusing, manual confusing, nice screen. Not looking forward to getting ripped off by RCA (again) for a repair. Wish I had bought a more expensive iPod, it would have been cheaper in the long run and without the frustrations.

ok I'm using this thing in an unsupported Linux environment, but basically it works. Plug it in and it appears as a USB drive, drag and drop mp3 files onto the device. They play fine.

The battery life is good, a day's play no problem, the capacity is 20Gb and it can handle any type of file so is useful for data transfers between machines etc. It's capacity actually makes audio books worthwhile though it doesn't play Audible's .aa files.

Audio quality is very good, but the earphones you get with the device are cheap, get a decent set.

The user interface on the player kind of sucks. It profiles the M3s into genre, year, artist, album etc based on the mp3 tags, so make sure they're correct or it's a mess to use. If you use Linux, get hold of easytag and set all the tags correctly or use something like Grip which will fill the tags in from freedb.

The big niggle and why it's only getting 3 stars is that you can't play music *while it's charging*. If you try to, it crashes with loud buzzing and has to be switched off/on. It's been back to the manufacturer with the problem but it still exists. This is stupid and down to poor quality control, it makes the car charger useless and it means I can't play music while transferring stuff to it. It just doesn't multitask. Otherwise, when not charging, it's actually reasonably reliable for me. The little niggle is it can't create playlists of it's own, you have to create them on the attached system and copy them with the mp3 files, again something like easytag or rhythmbox can create playlists.

Trying to get mine repaired is heck!!.......2006-03-24

I bought this a year or so ago and (unfortunately) didn't get the extended warranty this time. After many hours of downloads, at least 100 CD's, it stopped working. I took it apart and found the tape that holds the hard drive to the battery had come apart in several connections. I called all over, searched the internet, and found someone in Canada who had the same prob w/a similar model. He knew of 2 other people as well.
I (finally) located RCA-Lyra Customer Service and was told after about 20 min on hold to give them my credit card number and they'd bill me $100 then tell me where to send the unit for "repair"
I know they're going to just send me another of the same product and I'm going to lose my hours of downloaded music. The buttons DO stick, it takes forever to format the music (it reformats everything in the memory, instead of just the CD or file you added).
I am not happy with this item. So now do I pay the $100 and get a new one or just say screw it and buy an iPod?

I got the LYRA for christmas. I was excited to finally get somthing that had a big enough storage capacity for all of my music. It took me hours to figure out how to work the damn thing but I eventually figured it out. Not even 3 days after I got it, the buttons started sticking, and it wouldnt shut off. I had a 30 day return so I sent it back to them to fix. I sent it on 1/4/06 and I still havnt got the damn thing back yet. I wouldnt recomend buying this prouduct.

I had this archos for two years. Went out and bought an Apple Ipod. No comparison, Archos may not look great but by far is much better than the IPOD. The Archos is easier to use and sounds better also. Who cares about looks when ease of use is more important and the sound is deeper and clearer than the Ipod. Ipod sounds flat in comparison. I gave my 20 gig Ipod to my daughter and went back to good old reliable Archos..

Hard Drive Died in 8 months.......2005-04-23

I recieved the product as a graduation gift. After the first 3 months I noticed the product would stall for no reason (as computers sometimes do.) Then after 8 months the hard drive completely died on me. I called the company who said they would charge me $75 to fix it. Nice warranty!

Save your money for something else. Now I have a heavy and expensive paperweight.

the iriver mp3 w/ 256 MB may seem out-dated but it is very easy to use and compatible for your everyday music. most mp3's are way too small and fragile and some are big. the iriver is durable through and through and snuggles easily to your pockets or carry on. also great for the airplane rides, everytime i go to the airport i do not get it confiscated. i own 2 of these because i like to use one for road and the other for home use and jogging. GREAT PRODUCT, iRiver seems to be underrated for their sleek MP3's.

Excellent mp3-player for people that don't need much space.......2007-05-12

The best thing about that mp3-player is, that you can switch the input from mic to line --> that is just awesome (same with all ifp-palyer I think).
It's easy to use. The only bad thing is that you can't download/upload songs from the Windows Explorer but you have to install the iRiver Music Manager. The player also doesn't record the files as mp3's - you have to convert them when you download them with the music manager.

Excellent choice for the money.......2007-04-14

I've had my iriver now for almost 1 year and I really love it. It's much eaiser to download music onto and you're not limited to just downloading through the maker (i.e. IPOD). I've downloaded a great deal of my favorite cd's with suprising ease. The AA battery lasts a very long time. I also love using it in my new convertable, just plug it in with the attachment that's included and go. I purchased an IPOD for my husband this past Christmas (because he wanted what everyone else had, smile) and he was not impressed with it at all, as a matter of fact, he listened to my iriver (which I paid a great deal less for) once and wanted one for himself. The overall sound is better and you get a "bass" sound that's out of this world. We both found my iriver much eaiser to use than the IPOD and I just purchased my husband this iriver as a gift. Anyone looking to buy an IPOD for cheap (smile). Seriously, check this one out, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Happy shopping!!

Good product.......2007-03-13

Good MP3 player for working out/jogging and the recording ability is a bonus. Recording quality is ok. The controls are not very intuitive however and you have to really become familiar with them in order to be able to use all of the features. Not something you can just pick up and use without reading the instruction manual! If you aren't technologically inclined you might want to keep looking for something with simpler controls, but if you actually know how to set the clock on your VCR (does anyone still have VCRs?!) then you should be ok with this product.

As mentioned by several others the software is terrible, the device locks up and can't be restarted until the battery is completely dead, but by far the worst thing is that when the battery does actually die and fails to retain a charge, you have to return it to Philips and they charge $143.73 to replace the battery!!

My advise: DO NOT buy the Philips HDD line unless you are looking to spend $200+ on a "throw away" MP3 player.

It was a good year.. not really.......2005-08-09

I've had this for over a year and it's finally died on me.

Problems I've suffered through include the previously mentioned crap software, a period of lockup (only once) where I had to let the battery die and it worked again, and the device being way too quiet for my taste.

Browsing through the player's library has always been a pain, but now the library has stopped updating. In other words, I add tracks, and they do transfer onto the device, but the device doesn't see them. I know they're there because I can look at the files via Windows Explorer. But they're not there if I try to access them on the device itself. So basically I'm stuck with what's on it, and it's only 56% full.

I'm going to do some research and buy an ipod or something else. Then, since it's too late to get my money back, I'm going to smash this into pieces and never buy Philips again. A $250 lesson learned.

software: It is not as bad as everyone is saying it is. The only problem that i find is i have the put the soungs on in reverse order(14-1) Other then that the software is self explanitory.
The head phones are O.K (But who uses the headphones that come in the package anyway.)
I would recomend this product if you do not want to shell out the 300 bucks for an ipod but still want a 20 gig player.

Great piece of equipment.......2005-02-04

I got mine on eBay for about $75 bucks. It had everything but the manual, and the software. That was all easily downloadable on the internet though. The software isn't too bad, actually. I originally got it to record lectures off of the internet, as I am going to law school online, but it doesn't seem to be so keen on doing that. It may work in the end though, I just haven't spent too much time on it. It didn't come with the headphones or the remote, either, but oh well. What do you want for $75? I think its a beautiful machine, by the way, and the sound is first-rate. It has locked up a couple of times, but that's been more my fault than anything. It will hold a ton of songs, too. So far, I'm pretty happy, but if I had spent $200 or so for it, I might have felt a bit different

Better than expected!.......2007-03-19

Good:
This thing sounds amazing, very clean and clear! Played any of the MP3s I tried, ogg played no problem, and WMA files encoded in WMA 9.2 worked great. Great Xvid support (Simple or Handheld profile) tested at 720, 640 and 320 widths. Worked fine with the 2 DivX files I tried. The TV Out function is great. If the files are encoded at a decent bit rate (900+kbps) output is near DVD quality. The built in screen is good, nothing amazing but very good for the price. The camera works ok, it is comparable to a cell phone camera. The video camera worked great, above my expectation. The FM radio worked no problem once I set it to be in the USA. The photo viewer worked fine to view the images I took with the camera. Upload speed of the device is fast averaging about 1GB a minute. The menu speed and browsing of files is nice and fast as well. The included cradle is a great idea and very useful.

Bad:
The navigation once inside the various apps can be a pain. Getting all the options down can be difficult and remembering what button does what can be a tricky. Even getting out of an app can be hard. Loading 400 directories and 2000 songs takes about 8 seconds and sometimes has to rescan before it loads (20-30 seconds). Only supports reading MP3 tags, WMA and OGG just show the filename. Seems B-VOPs cause choppiness in Xvid video, requiring them to be encoded using a Simple or Handheld profile (Xvid Config). Time only in 24 HR format. The Free Space information on the SupportPlus firmware seems to not be accurate. The Sorell firmware fixed this but created audio sync issues as well as broke XviD support. Videos that worked perfectly on SupportPlus FW didn't work on Sorell FW. The device did freeze once while playing a video running Sorell FW v2.26.

Thoughts:
Overall I'm very happy with this purchase. It doesn't support play lists or any tags other than ID3 and MP3 browsing/sorting is done file level. Everything I have is arranged in directories so it wasn't an issue for me. For music I would suggest converting to wma v9.2 96kb for maximum space/sound quality using dBpoweramp. For video I suggest VirualDUB using Xvid @ 500kb to 600kb (Simple/Handheld Profile), 640xXXX, deinterlaced, MP3 audio @ 96kb or 128kb. If you want to output video to the TV I would suggest a slightly higher bit rate 750kb+. I also would recommend the SupportPlus 2.20 firmware over the Sorell SV-10 2.25. or 2.26 firmware.
