3 out of 5 stars a simple player.......2007-09-12

Expect a simple player that plays both DVD and VCR. Nothing fancy, and looks rather cheap for Sony product. If you want to view both VCR and DVD you have to downgrade the cable to RCA three lines. No S-Video or any other high performance cable can be used. Basically cannot fully capture the benefit of owning a DVD player.

3 out of 5 stars Decent DVD player........2007-09-01

DVD players can be so unstable, hit and miss, unreliable and short-lived that the machine may be worth the price for that feature alone. It's played every disc and doesn't even stick. There are disappointments, however. This Sony unit's remote control will not operate my Sony TV, which was purchased two years ago. More aggravating is the jumpy picture on all of my commercial VHS tapes when I play them with the Sony. (Note that S-video out and component video out capabilities apply only to the DVD player, not the VHS half.) Fortunately, I've got a really cheap Sylvania VHS player that blows this one away, and by stacking the practically generic machine on top of the Sony combo player and employing three remote controls, I'm able to achieve the desired result for which this machine was manufactured.

Still, somehow it's just not the same.

4 out of 5 stars DVD/VCR.......2007-08-22

Who could not understand the word "tunerless". It turns out to be just what I wanted. I have an old unconected Mitsubishi TV and a lot of VCRs and DVDs I wanted to play but all the new units had connectors not available on my older TV all I have is "RCA" inputs. Guess what? So does this unit...Perfect fit for me. People should do better research before they plunk dowm $80. Sonystyle has a great explantion of this set. I think the low price interfered with their input channel. (by the way take note, this unit does not have "S Video or HDMI connectors either)

5 out of 5 stars Fine product , reasonably priced.......2007-08-10

I got this to replace my old dvd vcr combo. I wanted the multi read dvd player for my home made dvd's. As an added bonus it also reads jpeg disks. As to all the negative reviews, I read all of them found them to be without merit. Every complaint was that the vcr had no tuner. I have a satellite box and if I wish to tape programs I use the satellite to do so. However I have no need for this as I have a dvr with my satellite service. To those who objected to the absense of a tuner, why would you purchase this product not knowing what that meant? Besides, in 2009 when the broadcasters switch to digital, everyone will need a separate digital tuner anyway.

3 out of 5 stars Great, but..........2007-07-24

Until DVR's are more uniform, we decided to replace our broken VCR with another. We do have cable, and at first were really impressed with the quality and quiet of this unit. HOWEVER...when we tried to play a tape we'd previously recorded on another machine, we found out that the Sony can't adjust the tracking for tapes recorded on other VCRs, if they were recorded in SLP, the fastest speed that uses the least tape. So our old movies are unplayable, and the only way to record on our older Panasonic to be able to play it on the Sony is to record in SP, thus getting only 2 hours on a 120 tape. Anything longer will be cut off. So forget about a movie or baseball game.
A very bad feature on a very good machine.

1 out of 5 stars 2 weeks and having trouble.......2007-09-17

My chief complaint is that in only 2 weeks I have had to reset this DVD/Video Player/Recorder several times already by pulling the plug out and then replugging. I find it hard to use. The buttons on the remote were sized for a small child. Usually technology gets friendlier as we go along, but not this.

4 out of 5 stars Beats some higher end combos by far.......2007-08-21

Having had three combos in the last 5 years I decided to try a number of them at the same time and then return the worst of them - because as many would agree, what I actually want is just not available.

In comparison to Toshiba 650, LG 797, Sony 555 (these are the ones I have tried so far), this one is the cheapest, by a significant amount of money and better than all of the others in one way or another. The LG797 is best but it is so sensitive to copyright there are TV shows (Mad Men on AMC), even cartoons (Stuart Little), Sometimes even Lifetime Movies that it will not record from a DVR or straight from Satellite. Samsung is not sensitive.

Samsung has three drawbacks that are almost dealbreakers - except that the other combos are so much worse in so many areas- not enough connections and it is slower than the others in editing features. It records RAM but not Double Layer discs. I have never had a combo that records RAM or DL until now so I would like it to record both like the LG does.

If you research all of your components and maybe even get an adapter when needed, the hookups is no problem. The speed for deleting a portion of a dvd or dividing, is slower than the others. Since I do lots of dividing and deleting on my +RW's, this would normally be enough to send it back. But it beats the others in so many other areas, it's still close to the best.

I have been transferring 24 hours a day from VHS to DVD or DVR to DVD and it has only frozen once (the others have several times). It is not sensitive to copyright so I can tape a movie and watch it later. I only make dvd's for myself to watch and I pay for the tv stations so I should be able to watch them and Samsung gives me that opportunity at my convenience.

The video quality from VHS to DVD or DVR to DVD is ridiculously better than the Toshiba and the Sony (Both over $240 each). It records every format it claims to record (unlike Panasonic which has great difficulty with +R and +RW). I am a +RW fan - if you haven't tried it because you think it is no different than -RW - you are sorely mistaken. Not having to finalize and "make compatible" or unfinalize to add something saves time and the discs still play on all of my DVD players. Not to mention more editing ability and reusing the beginning of the disc while there are shows still on the end (I have not figured this out on the Samsung yet - my previous LiteOn's did this quite easily and from all the features with +RW Samsung allows, I think it will do this also). I have used 8 different brands of DVD's (and have tried +R/+RW/-R/-RW/RAM and every single one has recorded and played back without a problem. From high end discs down to office depot generics. This is rare. In +RW mode it has the lovely feature called "Divide" also available on Sony and LG (not Toshiba). If you are transferring or recording and you let it run long or fall asleep you can divide at the end of your show and delete the part you don't want. You can do this with all the commercials also if you wanted to take the time. You get to use variable recording speed so if you are recording in SP but the last show you are adding to the disc is a bit longer, you can record the last show in LP so it fits. When you press Record mode to set SP SLP etc, it shows on the screen how much time you would have left on the disc for recording if you used that speed. So you don't have to open up the title list or figure it out yourself. There is much more and as I continue to use the Samsung, if there is anything important, I will add to my review. This combo is not perfect - there are more things I would change if the DVD makers would let me creat my own machine with every feature I want but so far this is surprisingly better than the Sony or Toshiba and beats the LG if you tend to record show or movies to watch on DVD later. I need two combos and this is good enough that if I can't find something that has the LG797 positives and the Samsung's positives - I will actually buy another one. I am very picky with my media and especially because the combos out there generally do not do what they say they do and that's heartbreaking when you are spending anywhere from $170 - $400. My three others were Liteon's and JVC and all three broke in less than 3 years.

IF you have right hookups and this combo has the features you are looking for, I can certainly say, it is excellent compared to the others I have tried.

4 out of 5 stars I need "Instructions for Dummies".......2007-08-03

We're very happy with viewing DVDs or VHS tapes and I've copied DVD to VHS but still haven't figured out how to record off the TV. I'm sure it will be find when I have time to study the instructions more.

4 out of 5 stars Too Early To Tell.......2007-08-01

So far the Recorder works as specified. It is easy to use and was no problem connecting and putting into service. How reliable the unit is has yet to be determined.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to use, good build, does what it's supposed to.......2007-07-30

Researched a bunch; all I wanted to do was get some old family vcr tapes burned to dvd, which was easy as pie to do with this machine. I don't care that it doesn't have a built-in tuner (as it clearly says on the box) because I have cable anyway. The upconvert playback of the dvds is impressive. Onscreen menus are easy and complete and intuitive. Looks nice and has plenty of inputs and outputs for my needs; hdmi, component and rca (composite) s-video; whatevery you need. Optical and digital audio too. Plenty. But about the remote; I hate it. It feels little, and flimsy to me. Could just be my preference; I'm used to big heavy clunky remotes with big lit buttons, etc. And, you have to be close and have a good aim when using the remote. My entertainment center has glass shelves and I suspect the signal bounces crazy off the glass which could explain the touchiness of getting the remote to work easily, maybe. Anyway, for less than $200 you can't beat it. It upconverts people. Nuf said.

Amazon.com Product Description

Slim down your home theater cabinet with the Sony SLV-D370P DVD/VCR combo player, which features component video ouput for vividly colorful progressive scan video. It plays just about any video disc format out there, from DVD-Video to DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW. The player also handles audio CD, VCD/SVCD, and CD-R/RW discs filled with MP3 music or JPEG image files. The front A/V inputs add convenience when you simply want to quickly view those newly recorded videos from your camcorder.

Its full-featured, hi-fi stereo VCR allows you to record your favorite shows while watching a DVD. Auto clock and channel set-up makes recording of your favorite TV shows easy--just pop in a VHS tape and press record. Other VCR features include 8-event timer recording, two record settings (SP/EP), quasi S-VHS playback, four 19-micron video heads (for optimized EP recording), and flash rewind.

Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive technology uses a 12-bit video DAC (digital-to-analog converter) with high-bandwidth, 108 MHz processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. That makes this player's picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because it uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle different pixel behaviors. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. The Precision Drive 3 feature provides a mechanism for reading DVDs that are in less than perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback due to imperfect, scratched, or warped discs.

The SLV-D370P offers a digital optical audio ouput, enabling Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound capability. Other connection options include:

You'll get great picture reproduction from DVDs using the three-jack component video (Y/Pb/Pr) output, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. Component video output is available only for DVD playback.

1 out of 5 stars Piece of junk.......2007-09-11

I bought this DVD player thinking that it had to be good, after all, its a Sony. I couldnt have been more mistaken. Granted, I have had this unit for a while...actually, convently, the warranty just ran out. The DVD portion of the unit wont play anymore. The dvd freezes and says "Disk cannot be played". DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. It seems I am not the only one that had this problem...read the others and ignore the few that got the "non-lemons"!!!

5 out of 5 stars DVD/VHS and No Tuner.......2007-08-31

This product is exactly what I needed. I wanted to watch DVD disks and to record programs on DVD disks for use when I travel and for my daugher who is deployed. It does those two things perfectly. It allows me to watch VHS tapes. As a bonus, I will be able to transfer, using one touch, my old, personal VHS tapes to DVD disks. If you use a satellite tuner or a cable tuner, the lack of the tuner is one less complication with which to deal. There is a function to allow this device to change the channel on the tuner, but I have not tried it because my tuner has a DVR, so I really don't need that function.

4 out of 5 stars Nice product.......2007-08-25

This is working great. It has a tuner, composite and s-video out and the old-fashioned RCA video output. The remote is kinda cheap. It rewinds VHS in about a minute. It's a good product. I really wanted a black unit, but at the time I bought this silver unit, there were no black units on line. Now I see black units. Overall, This is a great player.

2 out of 5 stars Plays well........2007-08-03

I've had this product for a while and I've never been able to get it to record a program. I've been connecting VCR's & DVD players in my house since they first came out. If I had tried the VCR recording operation within the first 30 days, I would have returned it to the store....live and learn!

It plays DVD's and tapes very well, and has automatic tracking for videos recorded on other VCRs. But if you like to fast forward through commercials - and we all do! - you will be frustrated with this machine. It doesn't stop anywhere even close to where you press the stop or play button, so you end up having to rewind.

The remote control will work for your TV if you leave this machine on. You have to set the slider to TV to turn on the TV, then back to DVD to change channels, and back again to TV to turn off the TV. But that's pretty much how any universal remote would work. If you watch a DVD, the whole sequence changes, and I've yet to remember the several button sequence to get back to changing channels. Sounds like a no-brainer, but I've used a lot of different remotes over the years, and this one is not what I'd classify as "user friendly." The "muting/zoom" button does not mute. And there is no channel "jump" or "back" or "previous" button to flip between channels when watching TV. You have to either use the channel up/down button or key in the channel and press enter. What a pain!

1 out of 5 stars Bad Quality.......2007-06-20

Not very happy with this purchase. Rewind is so loud you'd think a jet is flying through your home. Pause doesnt give a clear picture, its all lines across the top of the screen. As soon as you turn it on with Video enabled, your TV screens quality gets terrible. Also theres no tuner so i cannot record one thing while i watch another.
No wonder its so cheap. You get what you pay for. This will be a secondary player in the bedroom. Ill have to get another for the living room. Its not broken so i cant return it based on its crummy quality. Its cheap, and theres a reason for it. Now I know.

1 out of 5 stars Invincible Incompetence.......2007-09-06

9/5/07
Purchased the Samsung upconverting DVD/VCR in late Nov 2006. To date, Samsung has had the unit almost longer than I have. Worst product I have ever owned. Worst customer service organization at Samsung I've ever had to deal with! Seems more like "invincible incompetence!"

Unit did not work right out of the box. So much for Samsung's QC and testing of units prior to shipping them! The VCR ate the first two tapes we tried to play. I called Samsung and they had me send it back to them for repair, to an outfit called CVE. BEWARE!!!

My unit stayed weeks in their facility for "attempted" repair. CVE FINALLY shipped it back. Only one problem, STILL DID NOT WORK!!! Again, for the second time, no one at Samsung/CVE seemed to have bothered to test the unit to see if it worked after "repairing". Again, so much for Samsung QC & customer care!

Samsung now instructs me to send unit back to CVE, the SECOND time, since CVE failed to fix it the first time. I had to pay almost $13 to ship it back to them. This second time, Samsung/CVE has now had my unit for almost two months and they still haven't even started repairs.

Best of all, Samsung/CVE never bothered to tell anyone that my unit was just sitting there at CVE collecting dust. Apparantly, it would have sat there indefinitly had I not been again forced to follow up after this second repair was to have already been completed and the unit returned to me, but wasn't. Are these people Brain Dead?!

I've been on hold with Samsung for up to 45+ minutes far to many times. Samsung Regular Customer Relations (RCR) @ 1-800-Samsung is seemingly worthless---could not make any decision without Samsung Executive Customer Relations (ECR). Even when a supervisor at RCR finally said he had resolved, I was eventually (after almost two hours on the phone and yet another follow-up) told by ECR that he did it wrong and nothing was still happening! But, again, ONLY after I had to follow up for the second and third times to see why my unit wasn't returned yet as Samsung had promised!

Just today, this last of the many prior follow-ups, I had to make 4 phone calls to Samsung RCR, was transferred twice to ECR, was told once to call back since RCR couldn't reach CVE, was disconnected once and tried, myself, to call CVE three time but could reach no one at CVE either. Total time for only this last attempt approx. one hour and forty five minutes!!!

RCS continuously needs to transfer calls to ECR for help, but RCS doesn't have a direct phone number for ECS, only an extension. Problem is ECS didn't return my phone messages and you should be prepared to wait 20 to 50 mins for them to answer regardless of time of day or night called. I finally asked for the person the ECR rep worked for to try to get some results, she (the ECR rep) told me that she did not know who she worked for or how to get in touch with them! She even told me to look in Samsung's Annual Report for a contact! Is this the type of company, Samsung or CVE, that you want to do business with?

So far I have filed two VOC (voice of customer) complaints one with Samsung RCR and one with Samsung ECR, requesting a call back from an accountable decision maker at Samsung who is empowered to make decisions and/or in charge of customer relations. To date, NO ONE at Samsung seems to care as to how they treat customers. or how to improve that treatment or their products---NO CALL BACKS YET!

If you EVER buy a Samsung product, just remember: BUYER BEWARE!!! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!

1 out of 5 stars Lemon of a machine.......2007-08-30

I used the DVD player once and am now unable to get the DVD or VHS player to work. It looks like others have had similar issues. I wish I would have heeded their warnings. I am working with Samsung on getting it repaired but they are less than customer friendly. I need a new mother board for both the DVD and VHS - and they are on back order. I sent the unit in at my cost and have been waiting weeks on the parts. I would think that these parts would be kept in stock. I have asked for a new unit but they are unwilling to replace this defective one. I wish I would have gone through Amazon instead. Good luck to you if you decide to buy from Samsung!

4 out of 5 stars Great DVD Quality.......2007-08-19

Love the DVD player, don't use the recorder since my cable box doesn't have the RCA outputs. Still it was worth it for the DVD player. By the way, I'm watching on a 720p 30" LCD.

4 out of 5 stars DVD V9700 review.......2007-08-10

I bought this product due to the DIVX playback. It has worked well without any problems. Picture quality great with DIVX playback and without the upconversion. The quality of TV makes or break the picture.

4 out of 5 stars Good value for the product.......2007-07-27

Hi
this was much easier to setup than the last DVD/VCR combo that I had. The DVD quality is decent - not spectacular but well worth it for what i use the DVD player for - watching DVD's - mostly kids stuff.

Good luck

5 out of 5 stars Great Product! Just follow instructions........2007-09-14

We have Directv with Tivo, and it was filling up fast. after about 30 mintues of hardware set up, I was recording things off the Tivo and into DVD! I tested it on the portable DVD player we have. Now I have more than enough cartoons for my daughter; american Idol, so you think you can dance, rockstar supernova, oprah shows for my wifey; and more space on the tivo for my shows!
Set up, hardware: Easy, as long as you have all the cables ready.
Set up, DVD / VCR: Easy, as long as you follow instructions. Remember to finalise the disc before testing it on another system.

Seriously though, read the instructions through prior to setting up. It saves alot of time and frustration.

3 out of 5 stars Dubbing is not working for me.......2007-09-07

As other reviewers have said, this is a great value for the money. However the #1 reason that I bought it was to dub old (personal) VHS tapes to DVD, and that just is not working at all! Separately, both the VCR and DVD recorder are working fine. I have been able to record to DVD from my Direct-TV TiVo. But whenever I try to dub from VCR to DVD-R I get an error: "Can't record. TV system of input video has changed." That looks like a cryptic translation from Japanese to English. The unit actually records video to DVD for the minute or so that the error message is onscreen, so the signals are all connected, but then it just stays in dub mode without recording.

I am waiting for a response from Toshiba customer service, but if anyone else can help that would be great. Or if VCR to DVD-R works for you, just let me know.

Otherwise..
POSITIVES:
1) low price
2) nice appearance
3) no problem putting it between my Direct-TV receiver and my TV. Good for recording programs to archive permanently from my TiVo.

NEGATIVES & BUGS:
1) won't dub for me
2) using the text entry system with the remote to title discs and chapters is pure AGONY (slow & error prone)
3) there are two modes for watching the video output - VCR or DVD and the DVD mode introduces a delay on the audio so that you see someone's mouth move before you hear the words
4) there is some sort of undocumented sleep mode built-in. If I leave the unit in DVD mode for viewing regular TV, after some period of time the audio output is cutoff. I need to toggle between VCR and DVD modes to get the sound back. Hence, I must leave it in VCR mode to avoid having the unit go to sleep.
5) the remote is poor - not illuminated though dimly glows in the dark, multi-function button labels difficult to read, not a learning or pre-programmed remote - so add one more to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars All that I need it to do.......2007-09-06

I purchased the unit primarily to copy old VHS tapes to DVD format. The unit does all that I want it to do. I often hear that these combo units (with VHS and DVD) are troublesome, but I don't find this with the unit. I like of feature of adding chapters to the DVD recording at set intervals, so I can go back and write up an accompanying list of topic chapters. The only weakness is the time it takes for the signal from the remote to the unit. There is a slight delay if you are accustomed to punching keys in rapid succession. However, with patience and adjustment, I quickly became used to how it works, and I don't find it a annoying anymore. A nice feature is the DV port on the front panel allowing for direct transfer of movies from a digital camcorder or other devices. There is no tuner in this unit, so I have it directly connected to the cable digital box. Overall, you cannot beat the value for what you get. I did some research before purchasing this unit and chose it over the comparable Samsung.

4 out of 5 stars Works OK, Price competitive.......2007-08-04

We've had it for a week and it works OK for our intended purpose, which is to dub VHS to DVD-R. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it played a Region 0 PAL output DVD and a Region 3 NTSC output DVD I own. The manual says it only plays Region 1 and "ALL" (never have seen an ALL) DVDs and it specifically says it won't play PAL DVDs. It appears to be Multiregion and NTSC/PAL output capable. That alone make it a cut above other units of the same price. I did notice that it played Spiderman 1 DVD with the commentary pop-ups (special feature that sucks) even when I turned them off. Other than that, it plays DVDs nicely. It also plays DVD-Rs that I burned from Nero and JPEG picture CDs. People are correct when they say the remote is a bit slow. This is most evident when using the on-screen "keyboard" to rename the DVD and Title(s). Also, my unit seems to go to "sleep" occasionally when not being used. I guess I need to read the manual again to see what's up with that. I think it is just that the remote and unit are not in the same mode (DVD or VCR). It would be nice to have an internal tuner, but our government (FCC) has decided that we will only be high-definition by 2010, so the manufacturers don't want to bother with tuners.

3 out of 5 stars Works ok but controls are slow.......2007-07-12

Got the unit to replace a similiar Samsung unit that didn't work too well. The Samsung unit was easier to use -- one touch control to dub from VCR to DVD which is my main reason I needed this unit. However the Samsung had trouble setting the VCR tracking which resulted in unacceptable results for DVD dubbing and for output to a TV.

The Toshiba worked fine. However the controls are really slow. If you use the buttons on the front panel I recommend pressing the button for at least 2 seconds to get it to respond. The remote is really iffy. Also the controls aren't too user-friendly, you really need to read the manual to figure out how to dub from VCR to DVD.

If what you want to do is copy VCR to DVD or output to a PC through a device like DVD Express then this unit works fine. If you're looking for a user-friendly unit that is mainly used for playback I'd look for another unit.

3 out of 5 stars Confusing but.. it records!.......2007-07-08

Picked this up from BestBuy last night - should have thought twice as there was one on the shelf that had been returned already. It does not come with a tuner so without a cable or satellite box you're screwed.

My television lacks RCA jacks so I have an RCA/Coax converter. So far so good but the annoying part that I can't figure out is that I have to move the cables from VCR OUT to VCR IN when I want to record something, then back to VCR OUT when I want to watch!

The DVD part worked fine, no real problem there, picture quality looks good and the VCR recording quality looks great. The remote is a joke. You have to press combination keys to get things to work and it was very confusing to learn. It also hates to leave DVD mode. You cannot turn off the DVD side and only focus on the VCR ergo you'll be programming a timer or something and suddenly you're in DVD mode!

The other model at BestBuy was the Sony SLV-D380P. As far as I can tell it's just as bad but with an extra $10 Sony markup!

2 out of 5 stars Its not clear this unit requires an external tuner to record.......2007-06-24

Its not clear, until you recived this unit, that it reqruies an external tuner to record from tv. This should be clearly noted in the ads for this product.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad except for one thing........2007-06-05

I didn't have the problem with the 5 second delay. BUT this unit has no recorder and if you want to record content from your TV you MUST connect this through your cable BOX. There is no way to hook it up directly to your cable wire. Which was no big deal except I had to play "musical" DVD players because I bought it to put in a room with no cable box.
The picture quality is fine and so far it works well.

1 out of 5 stars I had to take mine back to Best Buy.......2007-05-10

The unit itself worked fine and seems like a good value for the price. BUT. The remote control requires a full 5 seconds after you press a button before you can press that button again, or any other button. That's a long slow count of 5 in between button presses. The manual warns of a delay in the fine print, but 5 seconds for each button press? It would have taken me a week to set the clock!

Perhaps my particular unit was an outlier in this regard (can they all be like this?) so if you want this product you should probably check out your exact unit right at the store before buying.

1 out of 5 stars Help -- how to record?.......2007-08-01

Has ANYONE figured out how to record from TV with this thing? We have tried every combination of cables with and without going through RF modulator. It plays videos or DVDs just fine but it's ridiculous to be unable to record TV shows. Wishing we'd read the reviews before ordering, but still thinking there must be a way and we just haven't figured it out yet. A clue, anybody?

1 out of 5 stars no internal tuner makes it hard to record from tv.......2007-07-27

Although it is not listed in the description for this item, there is no internal tuner in this unit. Therefore, before you can record a program from tv you must first hook up an external tuning device. I don't know about you but to me, what is the point of a recording device that doesn't easily record? There are so many choices out there and it is confusing enough without something like this being clearly identified in the description. Anyway, hopefully this review will help someone before they buy. It does play videos and dvds great---just hard to record.

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Panasonic DMR-ES45VS brings together a VCR and multi-format DVD recorder, enabling you to continue to enjoy your VHS video tape library as well as record TV programming and home videos directly to DVD disc. It includes easy-to-use front panel controls as well as an S-Video/composite AV input for connecting gaming consoles and video camcorders. This unit provides easy, one-touch copying of non-copy protected DVD disc material to VHS tape, and vice versa--great for archiving your old home videos. It also offers a FireWire port (also known as IEEE1394 or i.Link) for direct connection to a digital video camcorder, enabling you to download footage directly to disc. You can also view individual images and photo slideshows using the integrated Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot (compatible with JPEG and TIFF file formats).

This unit also includes an HDMI digital audio/video output, which can "up-convert" standard DVD movie discs to near HD resolution. Where standard DVD players (even progressive scan models) provide just 480 lines of resolution, the DMR-ES25S up-converts the picture up to 720p and 1080i high-def video formats--taking full advantage of your HD television's sparkling resolution. (Note that your TV must have an HDMI connection; HDMI cable not included.)

Choose from a full spectrum of recordable DVD media--write-once DVD+R and DVD-R discs or rewritable DVD-RW/+RW and DVD-RAM discs. (For temporary storage, such as your favorite weekly shows, DVD-RAM discs are a great choice as they can be rewritten more times than DVD-RW/+RW discs.) In addition to standard DVD movie and CD audio discs and its compatible recordable formats, the DMR-ES25S can play back CD-R/RW, dual layer DVD-R/+R, and VCD disc formats as well as JPEG, and MP3 digital formats.

Panasonic's Time Slip function consists of two features designed to give you added flexibility and control when making DVD recordings: Chasing Playback and Simultaneous Record & Play. With Chasing Playback, you don't have to wait for an entire program to be recorded before watching it from beginning to end. This feature allows you to watch a program that's currently being recorded from any point that's already been recorded--while continuing to record the live program in progress. Simultaneous Record & Play allows you to record a program onto a disc while simultaneously watching any other program that's previously been recorded on the same disc.

You can set your recorder to one of five different recording speeds, each varying in recording quality and length. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP & SP modes provide less recording time with higher quality recording, and XP mode gives you the highest quality recording. There's also the FR (Flexible Recording) mode that lets you record with the best picture quality possible for the recording time and remaining space on the disc.

The Direct Navigator feature makes it easy to find a previously recorded program on a disc. A list of recording dates, times, channels and (user-entered) titles are shown on screen. With the Playlist Playback function, you can perform simple non-linear video editing using, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, or copying selections

Jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or recording right away with the Rapid Random Access function when using DVD-RAM discs. Even if there is no sequential area of empty space available, this DVD recorder can record data on available space throughout the rest of the disc. You will also avoid searching for a blank spot to start recording, or accidentally recording over desired material.

Enjoy a great picture on you flat screen LCD or plasma HDTV using the component video output, and immersive surround sound via the optical digital audio output for Dolby Digital and DTS home theater effects. The full lineup of video and audio connections includes:

    Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections .

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 1080 lines.

Everything about this unit sounded wonderful, all the highlighted features, but it all faded away really quick as soon as I powered the unit on and tried to do something as simple as playing a VHS tape. It would not accept the VHS movies. You maybe thinking the VHS movies are too old and won't play. Unwrapped a brand new VHS tape put it in waited a couple of seconds spitted right back out. I tried the same tapes in my old stand alone VCR they all played fine. Menus are a little more complicated then most units. With this experience... I would probably never purchase another Panasonic player again, which is too bad because they use to make good electronic equipment!

    1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY PANASONIC!.......2007-07-28

Save your money, time and peace of mind!

I bought a Panasonic DVD/VCR recorder combo in the spring of '06. It worked "ok" for about 6 months. I then started noticing little "glitches". Nothing major, but off-putting just the same. While tech support at Panasonic were all very polite on the numerous times I called, they obviously had no clue as to correcting ANY of the problems my machine had (Uhhhhh, try a different brand of DVD. Or try unplugging the unit...)

It finally got to the point where the unit needed repairs, no more putting it off. This required taking a day off work, to drive across town to then drop of the unit and wait at least two weeks before a tech could even look at it. All this work I'm having to do because I bought a Panasonic product. After collecting my recorder from the repair shop, six weeks later, it still didn't work.

Panasonic, at this time said return it, we'll send you a replacement. HOOORAY!!! Great company, right? WRONG!!!! The replacement crapped out in less than two months!!!

Am told by Panasonic Management that the only option I have is to, again, have it serviced. WHAT???? The first unit wasn't serviced right, and now you want me to go through trouble of getting the new one serviced? (Shawn in management said this was my only option.) I said, I don't want it serviced, Panasonic is NOT a good product...I want to be compensated. Again, the only option I have is to have it serviced.

What is so insulting about this is that:

    1) Products, in my opinion, are junk.
    2) They took my money.
3? The expect me to spend time and effort (in addition to my money) to
chase rainbows to get products "repaired".

If you want to waste time and money, run around your block 5 times and throw handfuls of money down the sewage drain as you go by...

    5 out of 5 stars Panasonic DVD Recorder/VHS Combo.......2007-06-20

This is a really cool piece of equipment! Huge learning curve, but what a powerful tool! I record TV shows and edit the commercials out, then record them. Used the VHS feature to capture old shows to DVD. Has to be done in real time, but you can watch shows on the HDD at the same time. Recording from playlists puts everything into one huge chapter on the menu screen, so I recommend that you add episodes manually to record. During set up, use the manual feature for the unit to learn your channels...TV Guide, seach feature and recording set up are awesome! Be prepared to spend alot of time with the guide, but eventually you'll be able to use most functions in your sleep!

1 out of 5 stars Poor editing features, not user friendly.......2007-05-30

I was sold on all the advertised features but did not realize until after I purchased a unit that you can not edit RW discs. You can do no more than delete the entire recording. There is no VR recording mode for re-writable discs which means you can not edit out commercials. A waste of money for me. All the features in the world are useless if you can't edit what you record.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-25

I bought a refurbished unit for the sole purpose of transferring my old VHS's onto DVDs. My first attempt worked fine. However, after that I could never get it to record onto the DVD. I called customer service and had someone walk me through the steps again just to be sure it wasn't operator error. In short, the unit failed after one use.

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Panasonic DMR-ES35VS brings together a VCR and multi-format DVD recorder, enabling you to continue to enjoy your VHS video tape library as well as record TV programming and home videos directly to DVD disc.

    Tech Talk
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

    What's in the Box
DVD recorder/VCR, remote control (with batteries), AV cable, RF cable, power cord, one DVD-RAM disc, printed operating instructions

5 out of 5 stars Reliable High Quality - EZ convenient features for recording DVDs.......2007-09-08

This review is pertinent if, like me, you primarily want a DVD recorder to record stuff from a DVR unit or occasional rare VHS. I don't use or need many of the functions alluded to by other reviewers here, so if you're looking for advanced functions, skip to the other reviews.

I had previously owned a few Medion units, purchased together for the cheap price. They were flaky, and I ended up paying for my mistake with wasted disks and countless hours of wasted recording time. The disks that did succeed varied in playability on other machines.

Finally I gave up and after careful consumer research purchased a Panasonic DMR-ES35V. Although I read some reviews complaining that it was not very user friendly, for my purposes I have found it be extremely straightforward and logical. Very easy to use.

Unlike the Medions which only recorded on DVD+Rs (definitely not good; they are apparently much less compatible with other units) the Panasonic records on a multitude of media types, including both DVD+ and DVD- technology.

With +R disks there is a manual initialization required, but pop in a DVD-R and you are good to go almost instantly. One push of the big red record button and the unit starts recording in half-a-second. The pause function stops and starts the recording on a dime.

Finally, when all the recording is over, you only need to push the eject button to take you right to the finalization process. The display changes to a finalization message, prompting confirmation that you really want to finalize the disk. At which point you press the record button again, and the finalization process begins. Basically, you complete the entire process by pushing two big, easy to see buttons on the unit, and you're done.

In contrast, the Medions made you maneuver through a labyrinth of onscreen menus, and just starting the finalization process took minutes instead of the few seconds required by the Panasonic.

It is also a much more trustworthy unit. So far, I haven't had a single disk go bad in the recording process, or fail to finalize so it can be played on other systems.

This is my first Panasonic product and I am hooked. Since buying it I have added a new Panasonic phone to my home, and am just as impressed with it. As long as they keep up this quality in other products I buy, I will remain brand loyal for life.

1 out of 5 stars very disappointing!!! :-(.......2007-09-01

We brought this item because we wanted a dvd recorder/vcr combo to record from the vcr to dvd. And it is the worst. it freezes up all the time. wheather your trying to watch something you've recorder or a regular rental movie. Or it will take the movie and when you are finish it won't open to get the movie out. when you record something sometimes it plays on other dvd players and sometimes it doesn't. You never know what will play on other DVD player. it's so poorly made. it's not even worth it. it's better to pay a few extra bulks and get something that's actually works.

1 out of 5 stars Would not Recommend this product.......2007-08-14

I would not recommend this product to anyone. It does not create DVDs that are compatible with any other machine unless finalized. And it has an extremely high error rate which most likely will prevent you from finalizing your disks, making them good only for playback on the existing machine (half the time). The other half of the time, the error erases everything on the disk. So if you are taping your favorite weekly shows on the same DVD, by the time you get to the last recording, it can give you a U88 which will either wipe out everything you recorded on the disk up to that point or make it so it cannot be finalized and cannot be played back on any other machine.

I am sure there are better DVD units out there and I hope I get one the second time around. This one was not worth the money I paid for it.

5 out of 5 stars Panasonic DMR-ES35VS DVD VCR Recorder.......2007-08-05

Unit appears to be an excellent choice. Easy setup and very easy to program with 'on-screen programing'. Great copies & play back on both DVD's & VCR's

    1 out of 5 stars Dead in 6 months.......2007-07-01

DVD drive stopped working after 6 months. Numerous reset attempts did not fix the problem. Drive makes a clunking noise, fails to read any discs, and still gives me "NoREAD" errors even when the tray is empty. This is the second Panasonic product I've recently had stop working so unless their customer service people are willing to bend over backwards, I'll be spending my money elsewhere forever.

4 out of 5 stars Great, reliable player...but..............2006-10-14

I've had this player for almost 5 years now, and it's been very good to me since I originally purchased it. It hasnt had any compatibility issues, and usually played without skipping.

As of last week or so, I began having problems with skipping on dvds. I presume I'll have to open it and manually clean the lens. After 5 years, I cant say I dont expect it to some degree. I'm not too worried, I think a simple cleaning will solve the issue.

I do recommend you buy this, it's a reasonably priced vcr/dvd player, looks nice, and works pretty well. Take good care of it and it should last years.
