Very nice!!.......2007-09-18
This thing is really cool! Yes, it does take about a minute for it to "turn on" and be ready, but that's only a minor inconvenience. The main thing is that when you're watching an HDDVD movie, the picture and sound are awesome! Of course, some disks look better than others, but that has nothing to do with the player. It is does an excellent job of upscaling regular DVD titles (again, depending on the disk). The one thing that could be better, I guess, is what happens when you stop and "rewind" (like when you missed something that someone said, and you want to just back up). It isn't very smooth when doing this. You get about 1 frame per second when scanning backward (and probably forward as well, although I can't remember for sure). I guess it is just a lot of data and probably just the nature of HD-DVD technology in general. That's the only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars. But I have to say that overall, I am not disappointed in this purchase!
HD DVD.......2007-09-17
Absolutely a great purchase as a gift or for yourself. I have owned both an HD DVD player and a Blu-ray player for over a year now and must say I am much happier with my HD DVD player and half the price.
Despite well managed advertising campaigns by the Blu-ray format, the facts are that there are more movies released and available for HD DVD then Blu-ray. The HD DVD versions are cheaper, have combo discs that allow you to also play them in a dvd player and have functionality that's not even available on Blu-ray.
Superb high tech overlay popup menus, picture in picture functionality, advanced audio tracks, interactive content and the players even connect to the internet to allow you to download live pre-views and other extra features on the newer movie releases.
Amazon is offering 3 free movies plus you get another 5 free movies in the mail in rebate for a total of 8 movies. If you deduct the amount you would have paid for these movies, the player is practically free.
Bonus this player has been reviewed and awarded as one of the best up scaling player available on the market. That means you can take any of your regular DVDs and it will upscale the image and give you an even better picture on your already existing DVD collections. Then go up even another level for superb picture quality of an actual full High Def movie.
This player is so great that I have been making this my primary gift to family members for b-days and holidays. I want all of my family and friends to enjoy the great picture it provides.
If you have a high def television and want to optimize it to give you the best possible picture you can get, this player is definitely for you.
Great hddvd player overall.......2007-09-16
The startup time for this player is still too long, even though it's faster than the old version. If you have a dic in the drive, and turn the player on solely for the purpose of removing the disc, you have to wait at least a full minute. It's very frustrating.
Otherwise, the video quality is superb. Even non-hd dvd's look better.
No 24p.......2007-09-14
With the release of the A20, this player is obsolete. The lack of firmware upgrade to 24p on the A2, makes this a no buy.
The fact that the player outputs 1080i instead of 1080p is not an issue for me. But 24p is extremely important if you have a large monitor or are using a front end projector. Without 24p, movements across the screen will judder (it is, the motion will not be smooth) when watching DVD movies.
That's too bad because otherwise it's really an excellent player with nice features. But pay the extra $50 for the A20 and get 24p capability.
Note: if your monitor or projector does not support 24p, then the A2 will suite perfectly. But if you are looking build a new home theater setup, make sure the monitor/projector, Audio Reciever and HD-DVD/Blue-Ray player are 1080p, 24p and HDMI 1.3 capable.
good for the money.......2007-09-13
Good price for getting into high-def DVD arena. Picture quality is very good for HD DVD, but had to spend some time getting my TV's picture settings right. Using it with a 1080p LCD (Toshiba Regza 47HL167) connected via HDMI, so the TV is doing the de-interlacing - the TV probably just does an average job... I would imagine this DVD player would be a great match for a HDTV with HQV video processing. Does well with standard DVD too, so at the very least you get a good upscaling DVD player. Other than occasional HDMI "handshake" mishap when switching inputs on the TV, no problems to speak of (running latest firmware upgrade).
Pros:
- good standard DVD upscaling
- ability to watch HD content on disk (1080i)
- toshiba 5-free DVD offer
- cheap
Cons:
- slow to start
- button layout on remote
- not 1080p (but this depends on how good your TV de-interlaces)

MULTI REGION CODEFREE DVD PLAYER WITH DivX. PLAYS PAL/NTSC DVDS.......2007-09-18
Make it Region free you will not regretted:
I bought two of these and was disappointed to find they were both Region 1 only...until I did this:
1. Make sure there is no disc in the player.
2. Turn power off and on again.
3. Open the tray.
4. On the remote, hit 9879 and then 0. This changes unit to Region 0, meaning it'll play all regions.
5. Hit OK on the remote.
6. The screen will display a massage
Excellent product, good price.......2007-09-17
I like Phillip's products. this DVD is fantastic because put together two machine in one, normal DVD and DiVX format. really i like so much.
DVD Player.......2007-09-16
This player is simple to install and works very well. Not too many features but it does the job.
works with low price.......2007-09-13
i purchased it because my other one broke down after a year. it is easy to use. i would like a larger control unit though. nothing fancy - it just does it's job. i am going to buy another as backup.
Works Great and is slim.......2007-09-12
We bought this as a replacement for our DVD player that broke in our room. It works great. The box itself is very slim and light weight. The remote controll is also nice with features that are easy to use.

Product Description
The OPPO DV-981HD is the upconverting DVD player for the ultimate home theater experience. Built upon the highly regarded OPPO OPDV971H, the DV-981HD is ideal for high definition TV's and home theater projectors. The DV-981HD excels at making standard definition DVDs look great at high definition resolutions through the use of advanced upconverting technology that outperforms most TV's built-in upconversion capabilities. The DV-981HD makes it possible for you to enjoy your existing collection of DVDs as well as new DVD titles that will continue to be released for years to come.
Amazon.com Product Description
The DV-981HD is the latest incarnation in Oppo's highly aclaimed line of upconverting DVD players. It offers an HDMI interface (HDMI Specification 1.1), with HD upconversion ouput resolutions of 720p, 1080i, and full 1080p. This is Oppo's most full-featured player yet, and as such, it's not a DVD player for people with regular analogue sets. While the DV-981HD doesn't offer component output, and doesn't output standard or native resolution, it does represent one of the best (if not the best) upconverting DVD players out there, and it's perfect for people with HDTVs up to full 1080p who aren't ready to jump on the HD DVD or Blu-ray bandwagen. In addition to excellent upconversion, the DV-981HD offers playback of a whole host of formats including DVD-Audio, Super Audio CS (SACD), Audio CDs, HDCD, WMA, Kodak Picture CDs, all version of DivX including DivX6, as well as Xvid, .SRT, .SMI, .IDX, and .SUB file formats.
Audio Features
The DV-981HD outputs audio in stereo or in 5.1 channel surround, either via HDMI, or through the included 5.1 analogue outputs. Other connections include S-Video out, and digital coaxial and optical audio outs. It features 24-bit, 192 kHz high resolution audio D/A converters, supports virtual surround in six settings, and has built-in equalizer, channel trim, and channel delay functions.
Farudgja DCDi Technology
Rather than trying to build their own upconversion technology for this machine, the Oppo DV-981HD the DCDi Faruja technology from Genesis Microchips. In addition to upscaling a DVD's native 720x480 interlaced video to 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, Farudja technology also detects content that has gone through 3:2 pull down to convert film content to NTSC for video, and recreates the original frames by blending the fields back together. It then processes for any edit mistakes and reconstrucs an accurate signal, producing an image free of motion artifacts. The unique DCDi algorithm can also identify moving edges within an image and adjust interpolation at a pixel level to create smooth edges for on-screen objects, eliminating the jaggy edges that commonly result from other upconversion techniques. Farudja processing also uses a proprietary "TruLife Enhancement" technology to identify transitions in the image considered to be details such as skin texture, freckles or hair, and enhance those to bring more detail in an image to life on the screen. This approach avoids image artefacts common with the peaking filter approach used by other systems for detail enhancement. The Farudja system uses temporal filtering for noise reduction, and can achieve 6 to 10 dB of Noise reduction without introducing artefacts or losing sharpness in the image.
Connections:
- HDMI - High Definition Multimedia Interface: 1
- Analog Stereo Audio (Mixed 2-Channel Left/Right): 1 group (2 connectors)
- Analog 5.1 Channel Audio: 1 group (6 connectors)
- S/PDIF (IEC-958) Coaxial Digital Audio: 1

No Component Video (YPbPr/YCbCr) on the DV-981HD model. This model is designed for use with a display device with HDMI or DVI digital video input.
Compared with Other Oppo DVD player models
At the time of this writing, Oppo also has the DV-970HD upconverting player, and their original OPD971H model. Of these three models, the DV-981HD is the only that upconverts to full 1080p, the other models offer upconversion to 720p or 1080i only. Both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD offer Super Audio CD (SACD) playback, the OPDV971H does not. The other major difference to consider is that the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H both use Farudja processing for video upconversion. The DV-970HD uses a different upconversion system that may not be as full featured as the Farudja. For this reason Oppo recommends the DV-981HD, or the OPDV971H for use with larger screen HDTVs 50 inches or greater, while the DV-970HD is only recommended for HDTVs smaller than 50-inches. Oppo recommends the DV-970HD for use with external video processors or scalers, and suggests careful calibration of both the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H when used with DLP HDTVs. Both of these players are good for use with DLP HDTVs, but for the best picture, some setup time is required. For disply with a DVI input on your HDTV, an HDMI-DVI adapter is required with both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD models.
What's in the Box

Customer Reviews:
Good product. Very happy........2007-09-17
I spent a while researching various products. I was almost ready to purchase a samsung upconvert, but after more research began to favor the sony. I did more research and eventually settled on the oppo.
What I like:
The upconvert works great. Regular DVD movies looked incredible.
The options/features easily outstrip other units.
Regular avi files are upconverted. For example, if you have an HD, Xvid, or divx avi it looks almost perfect under the oppo (minor pixelation in a few areas, but I believe thats do to the source file.
What I didn't like:
The remote's keys are tiny (but I use my logitech harmony now and so thats not an issue)
Stopping and removing the disc will not recall position of movie (my old sony would).
What you really need to know:
By default the oppo is at 480p, read the manual and perform the change to 1080p before inserting your first disk or you'll be disappointed
I'm very satisfied with this and recommend the extra few $ for the oppo. Especially if you have no intention of getting involved in the hd/bluray conversation.
Great Product!!.......2007-09-15
This Dvd player is the best upconverting player I have seen on the market.
It plays everything and does it very well.Very well priced and packaged
very well. This company is doing all the right things and I couldnt be more
pleased.Keep up the good work Oppo!!
The best DVD Upconverter.......2007-09-15
The Oppo DV-981HD is the best player. Upconversion is almost Blu-ray or HD-DVD quality. This was my second Oppo. Extremely satisfied.
WHAT A WINNER!.......2007-09-14
This is truly a "must have" for anyone who has a 1080p TV and a collection of DVDs.
I have watched old DVDs perk up with new vitality. The picture rivals that of the hi-def programming I see on DirecTV. I have even "A-B'd" movies in hi-def on satellite and movies I have on DVD in standard definition. The Oppo approached a VERY close-to Hi-Def image, with better adaptability to motion than the hi-def.
The sound is excellent on DVDs, CDs, DVD-Audio and SACDs.
All this plus the ability to skip over forced material at the beginning of DVD's, return to a specified spot on a disc after it has been removed from the machine to play something else, to play both NTSC and PAL discs from ALL REGIONS of the world, this has got to be one of the most versatile and easy to use DVD players invented.
Do yourself a favor before you jump into the Hi-Def DVD Wars: try this machine. If you already have a large collection of DVDs, this unit will make you think you just bought updated remasters of many of them.
Oppo 981 DVD player.......2007-09-13
This a great DVD player both price and functionaly. Its upscaling is outstanding. Its multi region, after setting the region code to zero and handles both PAL and NTSC signals displaying them on any screen.
HDMI conection is problem free and the service backup and information available from the oppo web site is great.
I highly commend this player to one and all.

Philips DVP5140 Progressive Scan DVD Player, can play CD-R/W, DivX, DVD, DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W DVD-Video, MP3, MPEG4, Picture CDs, VCD, and SVCD. That's right, all of this in one small package for an incredibly reasonable price. All while delivering quality picture and audio performance. Component video output lets you connect this DVD player to your high-end home television set to optimize viewing quality.
From the Manufacturer
192KHz sampling enables you to have an accurate representation of the original sound curves. Together with a 24-bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analogue sound wave form, giving a much richer audio reproduction.
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and listening pleasure.
12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.
The attractive enclosure has a very low profile.
DivX Ultra combines DivX playback with great features like integrated subtitles, multiple audio languages, multiple tracks and menus into one convenient file format.
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and viewing pleasure.
Picture CD is a CD-R or CD-RW disc on which you can store your MP3 and digital pictures. When inserting a Picture CD in the DVD player, a screen menu will pop up, showing your JPEG's and/or MP3 files on the disc. Just select the music and pictures files you wish to enjoy and press play or OK. You can watch your pictures on TV with your music playing simultaneously.
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.
Other standard features include:
- 192kHz/24-bit audio DAC delivers high-quality audio.
- 12-bit/ 108Mhz video DAC for sharp image with natural colors.
- Ultra-slim design.

Great Versatile DVD Player!.......2007-09-19
I bought this DVD player after seeing it in action at a friend's house. I have not been disappointed with my own player. It works great both with my normal DVDs and with data DVDs on which I've burned divx/avi files. My only quibble with it was that it took me a small amount fiddling before I figured out which buttons on the remote functioned as the fast forward and rewind buttons. All in all, I'm very pleased with this DVD player and would recommend it to anyone who has a lot of divx files they'd like to watch on a bigger screen than their computer can provide.
Plays Everything.......2007-09-17
This is good DVD Player. I have used the earlier DVP642 for about a year, but it won't play DivX6. DVP5140 plays DivX6, this player is a wonder it literally plays everything that you throw at it.
I am satisfied with this player. The only flaw i find is the build quality is not as good as the DVP642, it feels a bit vulnerable compared to the DVP642. The DVP642 appeared more robust. The second thing is, it does not have a volume control on the menu.
Other than that this player is good and for the price its a steal deal.
Highly recommended.
Great find!.......2007-09-16
I am so happy with this DVD player that I have recently purchased a second one! Great find for a great price.
DVD player.......2007-09-12
This DVD player is pretty good, and the good thing about it is that it is multiformat and can also be used to play DVD's from Europe or Asia.
Everything it says it is........2007-09-10
This DVD player is the best I've ever owned. The region-free mod and the ability to upgrade the codecs make it incredibly versatile. The sound quality and picture quality are great, and the remote [although some parts aren't clearly marked] offers all the functions I need. Philips offers another, more expensive "region-free" player, but as other reviews have mentioned, this a much better deal and has all the same functions. All in all, a really great deal.

plays it all.......2007-09-20
The product description claimed it plays it all. And it does!
The price appeared to be low. And it was!
I'm thrilled with the performance and the cost.
Buy it before the company figures out it can easily sell this thing for
a few times the price.
Great Value.......2007-09-15
This DVD player is very easy to use and the up converting to 1080p on our new 61" Samsung LED HDTV is awesome. Played my old "Independence Day" DVD with the new equipment for the first time and it is really like stepping into the scenes.
Love it, but I've had problems.......2007-09-13
The main reasons I bought this DVD player were the great reviews and the small size (I have it on a dresser in my bedroom and wanted it to blend in). The most important thing to me is the picture quality... and so far, I'm impressed. I would have given this 5 stars if it weren't for the other problems I've had. But I will say this is my first upconverting DVD player and it's connected to my first HDTV. So, anything would probably look better than what I had before.
The problems: Almost every time I stop a movie halfway through to watch later, something isn't right when I resume it. I hit "stop" and it says "the movie will resume at this point." Then I hit power to turn it off. The next day, I hit power to turn it on and it immediately starts playing where I left off... however, almost every movie has had issues when it resumed. 1: The Davinci Code - no audio at all when it resumed. I have my TV connected through HDMI and somehow the setting for HDMI audio switched back to off (no one touched it since I stopped it the night before). 2: Apocalypto - The subtitles went away when I resumed the movie. 3: Blades of Glory - This one was really strange. When I resumed, only the background music played... the voice and effects tracks were missing. Each time I was able to correct the problem by starting the movie from the begining and skipping to the chapter where I left off. But this is still very annoying! I think I have the latest firmware, but I'll check again.
If I never stopped and restarted a movie, I probably wouldn't have ever had this issue and would have given this DVD player 5 stars. But with 2 small kids and a new puppy that has to go outside regularly, it's rare I can sit through a 2 or 3 hour movie non-stop.
You get Too much for too little.......2007-09-10
I have no complaints for this player. I mean, how much can you ask for US$62?
It reads anything I throw at it. Xvid and Divx movies play without problems. Upscaling works just fine but sometimes it can make you feel a little dizzy.
USB port can do external hard disks if you take your time and do some testing first.
I would definitely buy Philips again.
Good for Temporary DVD Player.......2007-09-07
I bought this because I wanted a 1080p upconverting player for my new LCD TV. I plan to move it to our bedroom TV once some 5-disk carousel 1080P upconverting players come out.
PRO:
1. Cheap (Amazon has for $60 now...I paid ~75 a few months ago)
2. DVD Player plays everything so far, including home video DVD+R, my wife's Chinese VCDs, etc.
3. Picture looks fine as far as I can tell.
4. It has a nice memory feature that remembers where the disk was last stopped. But there are problems (see CONS).
CONS:
1. SLOW SLOW SLOW. It takes forever to load a disk, etc. Controls are very sluggish.
2. It has a nice memory feature that remembers where the last disk stopped. But if you have a disk that lets you chose WIDESCREEN or FULLSCREEN at the start, and you select the wrong one, it is VERY hard to get back to that menu, almost impossible, even by taking the disk out.
3. Flimsy tray.
4. Controls in general not intuitive.
5. USB works, but does stutter on video played from there and not very user-friendly. I don't think I'll use this much.
6. Did I mention it is slow?
7. Sometimes drops down to 480p for no apparent reason.
My 10 year old Toshiba DVD player worked much better, except it didn't upconvert of course.
I would give this 2.5 Stars, except Amazon makes us go to an integer.

Toshiba HD-A20 comes through!.......2007-09-18
I recently purchased the A20 through Amazon. Even though I took the super savings shipping, it arrived in 3 days. The packaging was done well, and inside was heavy brown paper for additional safety.
With all HD products, setup is extremely important. For the most benefit of this product, you MUST use an HDMI cable and a 1080P television. Toshiba makes another product for the 720P/1080I televisions that is a bit cheaper.
For my setup, I am using a monster HDMI cable connected to a 46" Sony Bravia XBR2 HDTV (1080P). I am also using an optical cable connected to a Dennon receiver for 7.1 surround sound. As a side note, the sound will play through both the HDMI and optical output at the same time, so no switching is necessary. However if you are playing through your receiver, turn the TV volume off so as to not interfere with you higher quality surround sound system.
High Def Disks: I will start of the review by saying "WOW". The picture is simply outstanding. I am extremely pleased by the quality of the image. The HD is truly superior to standard dvds. From color to depth to sound, all areas are dramatically increased in quality. For the people that say their $33 dvd players are just as good, I just shake my head. They either have the wrong TV or connections or glasses. The difference is amazing, and can only be appreciated by actually viewing it. The sound quality in particular is really demonstrated on high def. With the increased storage space, there is more room for surround encoding, and if your receiver can accept dolby plus or DTS or TrueHD, then you are in for a spectacular treat. The "turn that down" fights have already started at my house.
Comparison to Blu-Ray: I also own a Playstation 3. I have compared the A20 to it. Both units produce extremely high quality images and sound. And if you can afford both, you owe it to yourself to do so. I can say that there is a very small difference between their quality, and this is more based on the discs rather than the players. Some movies are made with higher quality masters or better transference methods, or have a higher quality sound encoding. This is true for both systems, so each will have a couple of movies that look better on it, than the other. There really is no going wrong here!
Standard Def: This is the real reason that I purchased the system. I wanted to get an upscaling dvd player for my 500+ dvd collection. I had originally decided on the Oppo 841 (an excellent player and reviewed as one of the best upscalers in the mass market category). Those $100 dollar upscalers give an ok picture, certainly better than regular dvd progressive scan, but they are limited. The Oppo player comes in at $230 (worth every penny), but the A20 was for sale on Amazon for $310. The A20 also has a special offer for 5 free HD-DVDs (about $100 if purchased). Since the A20 got good reviews for its upscaling, it was a no brainer. Good upscaling, opening up the ability for HD, and free movies to offset the price of a quality upscaling dvd player, I was hooked. How happy I am too! The quality of the upscale is so good, I am watching movies I don't even like because of how great they look. Although the upscaling can't achieve true HD, it is amazingly close. Sounds great also.
Comparison to other players. In addition to having a PS3 and the Toshiba HD-A20 hooked up to my TV, I also have a gaming computer attached (3.4 gHertz HT with 2g ram and 512mb g-force 7850 graphics set at 1920 X 1080 resolution). Now here, the A20 really shines. Although the PS3 is an amazing machine, it currently does not upconvert. So it was no comparison. Where I was suprized, was that my 4K worth of gaming computer did not look as good as the A20. I really expected that with the power of a computer and graphics card, that they would have been closer, however I was wrong. The A20 looked much better, and seemed more vibrant. The A20's sound was far superior to the computers (playing through the same denon receiver). Over all, the A20 wins hands down.
The downside. The machine has one flaw. It is slow. It takes about 30-45 seconds from power up to disc menu. Really not a problem because you have to get the popcorn anyhow, but needs to be mentioned. It is also slow for upgrading. If you attach it to a LAN, you can get firmware upgrades (and also online contect about the program your watching). This feature is great and was easy to set up. However, it was very slow, and there is little indication that it is working. It took about 30 minutes for the firmware upgrade (this was its first one though) and the last step took so long, I thought it had encoutered an error. It did not, but it made me nervous. Just set it to go, and leave for a while, it will be done when you come back.
I can heartily recommend the Toshiba HD-A20 1080P HD-DVD/Upconverting player. HD-DVD looks great, and your DVD collection will be brought back to life.
Thank you for reading my review
Full HD - 1080p.......2007-09-18
When you turn this player on and insert a disc, it takes a little longer than a standard dvd player to load and boot up. It is worth the wait. The 1080p picture is so good that I don't even want to watch anything else. The firmware update was not needed on my player. I have played several HD DVD's without problem. The manufacture date on my player is May 2007. Be sure your tv will display 1080p if considering this model.
All you need for HD-DVD, with caveats.......2007-09-16
I recently got a Panasonic 1080p projector with a 100" screen. The picture from a regular progressive scan DVD player was hard on the eyes so I looked into High-definition format players. Initially I was interested in Blu-Ray since it has more of my kind of movies. After much research, decided to forgo Blu-ray for now since the format is not yet settled and the competition is likely to quickly drive the price down. Instead of shelling $500- for a Blu-Ray, I can get HD capability for $300 with the Toshiba HD-A20 and early next year, I expect I can buy a Blu-ray for about $200-. Note also that most movies we're watching these days are still on standard DVDs, so a major criteria for any player is ability to play standard DVDs well. We also watch a lot of foreign movies so subtitle quality is important.
Setup for the Toshiba HD-A20 was really easy. The manual was short and clear, and the menus easy to navigate (some of the best laid out menus for any DVD player). Yes it takes 30 secs to start up and yes there's other quirks, but if you read the manual you will know exactly what to expect. The first thing I wanted to do was update the firmware. The device I got was shipped with firmware 1.0 and the latest firmware is 2.5. This is where I ran into trouble. Unless you are living in an apartment, the Ethernet port connect to the player is worthless. They should have shipped it with built-in wireless because - sorry - I do not want to run a 200' ethernet cable from the second floor computer room to the basement. Without the port you also cannot access the online features of HD-DVD disks, no big deal, just don't make the ethernet port be a deciding factor.
The big deal is that to do firmware updates, you need to be looking at a TV to navigate the menus while you are connected to the internet. That means I cannot just carry the player up to the computer room, hook it up to the internet and update the firmware. I tried to do it blind but it didn't work. They could have at least added a one-touch button for firmware updates, or used the built-in display for menu navigation, but no, you need a TV and internet in one room. Next I tried to go to the web and download the firmware to burn onto CD. Good luck navigating the Toshiba webpage. It took me a long time only to end up with a page not found. This is a far cry from Sony from whom I can download the firmware update for the BD-S300 right from the product page before I even buy the player. I contacted Toshiba and they did not respond. Later that day I was able to find the firmware update thanks to Google, burned it on CD and everything went well. All I can say is I don't look forward to the next update, and this is the main reason for the loss of 1 star.
With firmware 2.5, I have to say the picture quality is absolutely stunning. The first thing you want to do is set up the RGB colorspace to "Enhanced". This deepens the blacks and is absolutely critical for LCD projectors. Another feature added with the update 2.5 is ability to play 1080p at 24 Hz (film native format). From what I've read, that was the only difference between this and the HD-A30, due to be released in Oct. So, if that's what you care about, don't wait for the A30. Buy the A20 now, enjoy several weeks worth of use, save $100-, and get 5 HD-DVDs for free for buying before Sep 30. I have to admit not seeing any difference using the 24 Hz mode.
With an HDDVD (flags of our Fathers) the picture was just amazing. You can tell the difference easily between a standard DVD and an HD-DVD on a 100" screen. With standard DVDs and the player set to upconvert to 1080p, the picture was also good, but I could not detect any difference in picture quality between the A20 and a $40- standard progressive scan player. Basically upconversion is hype. When you play a standard DVD onto a 1080p projector, upconversion has to happen somwhere down the line. When I use a standard DVD player, the projector does the upconversion, and in my case it does it just as good as the HD-A20. Perhaps you'll notice a difference if you have a noname-brand HDTV doing the upconversion.
The one difference is that with the HD-A20 doing the upconversion, the subtitles do look better than through the standard DVD player. Still, whereas some Samsung models allow you to change the font and color of subtitles, the A20 has no such control, so I ended up watching a black and white classic movie with Yellow subtitles - very hard on the eyes. Another issue for foreign movie buffs is that this player does not play PAL DVDs. My $40- one does.
I did not get a chance to judge the audio since I only have a 2.1 speaker system with an old analog receiver. The sound from the HD-DVD with a Dolby Digital did sound very good, though, much better than the usual movie audio. I can't wait to upgrade my sound system. One thing to watch out for is that this player does not have HDMI 1.3, which means that Dolby TrueHD tracks will be downconverted to Dolby Digital, then sent through regular HDMI to the receiver. So you can listen to Dolby TrueHD discs but you won't be getting the full quality. The upcoming HD-A35 model will support HDMI 1.3, so perhaps that one is worth buying if you're willing to pay double the price.
Pretty Good HD Player.......2007-09-15
I just purchased the A20 and the Samsung lnt4065f 40" lcd. The HD DVD's I purchased like Planet Earth and Antarctica HD look really good, no pixels and very clear but my regular DVD's don't really look that good. Is there maybe a setting or some kind of firmware that will correct this? I also purchaed 300 combo disc and that didn't look that clear either. It had a lot of pixelation. I have it hooked to my TV through HDMI.
A FANTASTIC PLAYER.......2007-09-14
YES, "FANTASTIC' IS A SOMETIMES OVERUSED AND TRITE WORD BUT RIGHT NOW I CANNOT THINK OF ANY OTHER TO DESCRIBE THE A-20 HD DVD PLAYER BY TOSHIBA. I DECIDED TO BUY NOW RATHER THAN WAIT FOR THE OUT- COME OF THE FORMAT WAR, AS IT NOW APPEARS THAT IT MAY NOT BE DECIDED THIS YEAR. WHY BUY NOW? THE VERY LOW PRICE BY AMAZON HAS BEEN LOWERED AGAIN, THE FREE SHIPPING AND THE OFFER OF FIVE(5) HD DVDS BY TOSHIBA, WORTH AT LEAST $100. TO $125. AS FOR THE PLAYER, THE PICTURE IS SO CLEAR AND CRISP THAT I SIMPLY CANNOT VIEW A STANDARD DVD NOW, EVEN ON MY UPCONVERT PLAYER I PURCHASED THREE (3) MONTHS AGO. THERE IS NOTHING RIGHT NOW COMPARABLE TO THE 1080p PICTURE.THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE VERY CLEAR AND THE PLAYER IS EASY TO HOOK UP, THE SO-CALLED BOOT TIME IS ABOUT TEN (10) SECONDS. I MUST HAVE RECEIVED A RECENTLY MANUFACTURED MODEL, BASED ON THE EARLIER REVIEWS I HAVE READ ABOUT THE SLOW BOOTUP TIME. ALTHOUGH I HAVE NOT NEEDED THE FIRMWARE UPDATE THUS FAR( AS IT PROBABLY WAS ADDED AT THE FACTORY), I HAVE IT READY TO GO IF AND WHEN NEEDED. AS FOR HD-DVD DISCS, THE "PLANET EARTH","KING KONG" AND "THE SEARCHERS" ARE SIMPLY OUTSTANDING IN HD-DVD. THE TRAVEL DICS ON HAWAII, BRAZIL AND ITALY ARE ALSO OUTSTANDING, ESPECIALLY AS THEY WERE FILMED USING HD-DVD CAMERAS AND NOT SIMPLY REMASTERED. THE SPECIAL FEATURES BUILT INTO THE PLAYER ARE MANY AND, IN FACT, THERE IS THE ABILITY TO CLICK ON THESE FEATURES WHILE WATCHING THE FILM. IN A WORD, IF ONE IS INCLINED TO DO SO, NOW IS THE TIME.Toshiba HD-A20 1080p HD DVD Player

Very impressive player!.......2007-09-19
I bought this product with the understanding that it was an excellent value and provided stellar picture quality.
I was not disappointed!
I'm very pleased with the player and the upconverting on my 32" LCD looks unbelievable! I could never go back to standard definition.
Highly recommended.
+Amazing performance.......2007-09-18
I am using it as a transport only and it provides amazing performance with my high-end stereo components.
.
DVD player.......2007-09-16
So far I love it. It really does make my standard DVDs look fantastic. It doesn't seem to make as big of an improvement on newer movies as it does on older ones. I hope it is reliable, because this DVD player will keep from buying an HD-DVD or a Blu Ray player for quite some time.
A jewel of a DVD player!.......2007-09-16
This is no doubt an excellent product. I bought it after reading all the experts reviews I could get. At first, I thought it was pure hype from manufacturers-sponsored publications. I misjudged.
The Oppo dv-970hd is what the experts claim it to be -- it has excellent sound and image, lots of nice features like zoom in remote that allows the user to adjust the image to the exact screen size, plays back DVDs of any regions, simplicity and lots more. All this adds up to money well spent. For the price, it is unbeatable. Highly recommended.
Excellent quality!.......2007-09-16
I purchased this DVD player with some doubt over its abilities to perform as advertised. It's truly amazing how excellent the image quality is. If you have an HDMI input in your TV use the included cable because with this player you will want to see it in all its glory. I would recommend this player to anyone. Besides the oddly configured remote I have zero complaints about this product! It's worth every penny!

Amazon.com Product Description
Forget thinking outside the box--now you can stop worrying about the box altogether. Coby's DVD-224 is about the size of a hardcover book, so whether you're ferrying the player between the kitchen and the bedroom or hooking it up for periodic use by the kids, the DVD-224's small size permits enjoyment of DVD programs and music CDs in just about any room you want. While not portable in the traditional sense--the unit has no screen and requires AC power--the DVD-224 is much easier to move around, set-up, and use than a traditional component DVD player.
It handles not only your DVD-Videos (both NTSC- and PAL-formatted discs, depending on your TV), but it plays your music, too--everything from standard CDs to home-burned CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3-encoded CDs. Further, you can load a disc brimming with digital photos for custom slide shows in the comfort of your home theater.
An onscreen display simplifies setup and operation, and the unit comes with a compact, full-function remote control. Other features include parental controls (with PIN lock), frame-by-frame slow motion, picture zoom (2x, 4x), and multiple-angle viewing (with applicable discs).
Like to travel? The DVD-224 won't hog space in your bag, and an auto-switching universal power supply handles inputs from AC 110 to 220 volts (50/60 Hz) for use in most countries. Accordingly, the unit's onscreen display offers a choice of 5 setup languages: English, Spanish, French, German, and Italian.
A composite-video output ensures compatibility with nearly any television and many newer computer monitors. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (choose from either optical or coaxial) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A set of standard left/right RCA analog outputs simplifies hookup with traditional integrated amplifiers and most televisions.
What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.

Awesome!.......2007-09-16
This is a great little player. It's easy to set up and easy to use. Plays great.
Fine until it broke........2007-09-16
I understand that I should have low expectiations with the price, but I expected it to work longer then 45 days. When it was working the only drawback was the remote which has 56 evenly spaced buttons that are all the same size so you better have the lights on if you are trying to use it!
I'm happy with it........2007-09-14
This is a great bare bones DVD player. It doesn't have many bells and whistles, but is an excellant value. We've been using it regularly for over three months. If it breaks tomorrow, we will still have gotten our money's worth.
Satisfied with my first DVD player purchase ever........2007-09-12
Thinking it was about time I bought a DVD player I decided to go with this affordable one to start me off. Based on the reviews I knew what to expect. I've had this DVD player for about a month so far with light usage and I love it. The only 2 issues I have with it is that while it was easy to plug in, it wasn't exactly a cakewalk to try to get it to work at first. I needed to play around with my settings and I finally realized that I had to change my TV setting manually to video in order for the DVD to play. The instructions did not explain this anywhere, but then again my 24" Sony is over a decade old. The second issue I have is that there is no power button on the remote. Also, unlike my VCR which I can switch from cable/tv to VCR by remote, I have to actually get up to manually change the video setting on my TV and press the power button before watching any DVD. It gets a little annoying if you are snuggled in bed and need to get out just to watch your fav DVD that's already inside your player but other than that all the other buttons that you need while watching your movie are on the remote. Overall I am happy with my purchase and I feel it was worth the money. Shipping was longer than I expected from Amazon, but arrived on time.
Great little DVD player! Features just right........2007-09-08
I got this DVD player to fit in a narrow area next to our in-wall television to eliminate the need for tacky A/V room furniture and exposed wiring. The Coby DVD-224ss Compact DVD Player works great and has played every DVD flawlessly. It's small size, great price and features are just right for family DVD viewing. I would buy it again.

Oppo 980H.......2007-09-19
Wasn't initially blown away by the picture (using a 720p JVC 52" monitor). Have gone back a couple of times with the THX Optimizer disc to try to nail down a better picture and I am getting closer to achieving that. What blew me away last night was popping in Diana Krall's "Love Scenes" CD -- sounded magical, like she was right there in the room with me. I have a Yamaha YPS1000 (all-in-one speaker) and JBL sub. I have e-mailed Oppo support on a number of occasions and they have given me a speedy response (although it seems to be heavy on the techspeak). I think I'm going to be quite happy with the Oppo as soon as I spend more time with it. Love the fact it came with a HDMI cord.
excellent dvd player.......2007-09-19
Just to add my vote, this is an excellent DVD player. I use it with an older Sony LCD tv (XBR1, only goes to 1080i), and compared the picture, using a standard widescreen DVD, with my older Panasonic progressive scan Panasonic dvd player (480p output). The picture with this one is clearly superior.
As others have said, the whole thing reeks quality and attention to detail. A good quality HDMI cable is included, as well as standard video/audio cables in case you need them for troubleshooting. The packaging is a class above the industry.
If you want something for watching standard DVDs with a good HDTV, consider this one or the 981HD model.
Oppo 980 is the Excellent Plus.......2007-09-19
This is a superb DVD player. Image quality is excellent
and I really like the controls and feature set. There are
many upscalers that cost less, but I feel this player is
worth the money. Value +++

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding machine, but some limitations.......2007-09-16
Positive features:
Large screen, clearly visible from a broad range of angles. I can't comment on picture quality compared to other portable DVD players, as I haven't compared them carefully, but the colours displayed on this LCD are as good as those on a good quality CRT picture tube.
Feels solidly built. Although screen is hinged so that bottom may tilt out or so that screen may lay flat (LCD side up) against the machine, the hinge looks very solid. Basic on/off/play controls still accessible with screen laid flat over top of machine.
Two headphone jacks, so two people at once can listen to playback over headphones, such as two passengers in back seat of an automobile. Most DVD player cases permit suspending the unit centered between two automobile seats for viewing by two people. The wide viewing angle of this unit's LCD screen will permit both viewers a perfectly clear picture.
Output jacks for two headphones, video out, audio out (stereo).
LCD screen may be shut off, conserving battery power if player is connected to a television or computer serving as monitor. According to the manual, this extends battery life to several hours.
According to the manual, audio output is compatible with surround sound systems.
Resume function: only one button need be pressed to turn on player and resume playing where one left off the last time the machine was powered down.
Freeze, frame-by-frame, multiple speeds of fast and slow-motion playback available, including fast playback in reverse. Settings permit setting playback speed to slower or more rapid playback, with audio remaining audible, according to the manual. Slow-motion/ff playback quality is impeccable. Fast-forward playback in lowest speed includes playback of audio, but audio playback is choppy and marginally intelligible.
All special features and menus of this machine are available from the console; this unit does not include a remote, as none is needed. No risk of losing functionality due to a lost or broken remote. Menus are simple and intuitive to use.
Plays VCDs and DVD-Rs just fine.
Rechargeable battery is good for longer playback time than most other machines on the market.
Multiple parameters of picture quality may be adjusted.
Negative features:
Selecting track number to play on VCDs is a bit of a pain: two levels of menu have to be gone through and the track number selected by repeated presses on a navigation key. Only a minor inconvenience, however.
Although I can't verify whether or not this is true, instruction manual states that battery is good for 300 rechargings. This seems low given the quality of currently available rechargeable battery technology. Some extended warranties provide for replacement of batteries which have dropped in performance, so consider purchasing such a warranty if buying this unit (I'm presuming that the same would apply to any other such brands of portable DVD player).
Even on maximum setting, audio volume seems weak both on speakers and on headphones. It's difficult to imagine that audio could be clearly heard while operating this unit in a motor vehicle or any other noisy environment. Maybe some small in-line amplifier could be connected to headphones to correct this, though I'm not sure if such contraptions exist. Audio volume is fine when this unit is connected to a television set.
The lid which closes over the DVD seems thin and flimsy, unlike the remainder of the unit.
All in all, this seems like a smartly designed, feature-packed and high-quality unit. I'm very pleased with my purchase, as I have been with other instruments made by Panasonic.
battery life isn't what its cracked up to be.......2007-09-16
Just purchased this dvd player and was disappointed that the fully charged battery kept dying after 2 hours at medium brightness. I called panasonic and they said that I have to significantly lower the brightness to even get more time. Needless to say I travel quite a bit on airlines and therefore unless I spend $100+ to get another battery with more time I will not get the quality and time that I expected. I bought this based upon reviews and especially for its battery life. However, on the plus side the images are clear and its nice to have the adjustable screen.
Fine product!.......2007-09-14
I was debating on getting the Sony for few bucks less. But then I wanted the additional feature of playing DIVIX format. By paying a little more, I was quite satisfied with it. Thought the picture display quality is better than the Sony. Received it as expected.
Very happy with this product!.......2007-09-01
I had done a lot of comparison shopping before purchasing this product and was very pleased with the item.
The long battery life is SO worth the price over the cheap models with the shorter battery life. The player's screen can be tilted and angle adjusted and the picture quality is great! Using the settings you can even adjust the size of the image on the screen, depending on whether you like the picture widescreen, full screen, or other. The sound quality is great. I was concerned since the volume seems to be a concern on some models, including the sony, however we used this on a loud airplane ride with no problems. It has 2 headphone connections which is nice. If you need to hook up more headphones, I purchased a splitter at Radio Shack, and it worked great with this DVD player, allowing my 3 children to listen using headphones with no complaints! We also used the provided cables to hook it up to a tv and it worked wonderfully and the picture was still fantastic. Also, it does NOT have a remote, which was actually my preference. I did not want a tiny remote with such a small portable device. I would have been afraid to loose it, and then be stuck with a machine I could not use.
i should have listened.......2007-09-01
i usually read the bad reviews first since the good reviews might be written by employees of the product but i should have listened to the one star review. the screen image is NOT sharp, all the edges are indeed pixilated, and overly contrasty. and since this is about viewing a movie i have to give it low marks. also if you view at a moderate angle you lose the image. there is no remote, and if you tilt the screen you cant get at some of the controls. the tag says it has the divx codec so that is a plus, but i havent tried it yet. i usually use a small sony vaio computer about the same size as this panasonic dvd player to view my handheld movies and the screen on that is very sharp so my expectations might be too high but shame on panasonic, i have many of their usually high quality products and i expected better.
