A nice system but..........2007-09-08

A nice system, very elegant design and performance...no complaints there. A bit costly and the HD DVD Drive has seemingly buggy audio playback with HD Disks. For the price, as with most electronic devices, you expect some baked-in price for the customer service that comes with the package. On this piece; you are throwing a fair percentage of that unit cost out the window. Have called TOSHIBA Customer Support 3 times on a single issue. System will not recognize the TV Tuner that is part of overall unit. Not a buy-up but; sold as 'part of the package'. I was transferred to "Level 2" support 3 times, waited on hold for 20 minutes 3 times and was promised a "call-back" within 4 hours. That has taken place over five days since I received the computer one week back. To date; nothing, no call back, no email. The last time I called, I mentioned that I was ready to return the system on a poor Customer Service basis alone. Same result; no call back. It is a bit disheartening.

Before purchasing this "baby" Qosmio I was online for 6 or 7 months looking to purchase my first laptop. I had basically determined that a Toshiba Qosmio was what I wanted,but the AV660 which was a big buck machine and way beyond my needs or capabilities seemed to be out of reach although I persisted trying to find a deal on ebay and other sites. After exhausting myself with ebay frauds, and used machines I was ready to move on a mid level tho quality machine in the Toshiba and HP line and found a suitable sub Toshiba unit, but then Toshiba released the "baby" and I immediately made the purchase! Being an audiophile the sound system was my #1 consideration with the gigs a close secondary. This line incorporates the latest Intel "Santa Rosa" platform and being an informed tho novice pooter user and taking all into consideration put in the order on Amazon. Now, realistically, a well informed and long term pooter user would take lightly anything a first time laptop buyer would recommend and that is quite understandable. But I can tell anyone who likes decent sound without add ons and a rip snorting processor, specs aside, check the Toshiba F45 "baby" Qosmio series out before you lay down your green and get back to me. I'm a bang for the buck kind of guy and this baby is my "Buckbanger".

Sub-standard Keyboard.......2007-08-05

PROS:
- Very clear screen.
- Very nice sound system.
- Huge hard drive (250 GB)
- The 2 GB RAM, Intel Turbo Memory somehow make up for the slow hard drive (just 4200rpm).

CONS:
- HD is only 4200rpm. Slow compared to other HD's with higher rpm (5400, 7200, etc).
- White keyboard. Hard to keep 'em clean.
- LCD Cover Color (Cosmic Black) would definitely have lots of fingerprint marks.
- Placement of 2 USB drives (total of 4) on the lower-right side. This is such a hassle when you use a mouse.
- Placement of the headphone port on the mid-right side. This is such a hassle when you use a mouse.
- IMPORTANT: Battery life leaves much to be desired.
- IMPORTANT: Have experienced screen display not being shown after sleep-mode activation (sleep-mode activated after you close the lid). Thus forcing you to restart your laptop by brute force (Read: no shutting down).
- IMPORTANT: POOR KEYBOARD!!! One key popped-out on my first use. I had to have it replaced because it gets popping out. Funny thing was that the same model being displayed at the store where i bought it, and it also had a missing key.

pretty good notebook.......2007-07-26

I bought this notebook a week ago, it is a good notebook, great performance, great processor huge hard disk and the intel turbo memory is really good. The weak point of this notebook is its battery life. I still recommend it for those who like to listen music while working with the machine, or videoaddicts, the harman/kardon speakers and subwoofer are amazing.

It is well equipped for office productivity software tasks, from complex spreadsheets to databases. A nightmare machine..........2007-06-09

Wow, ok,,well, I bought this 15 months ago at the then high price. Had I gotten it for close to $1000, I might not be so bitter..While in warranty, the power supply failed. That's when I learned that there was no local repair facility. I was, however mailed a replacement part, so that worked out. Then the regular warranty ran out and things began happening fast...Yes, I did buy the extended warranty through mac cam, but that turned out to be not all I hoped for. To begin with, I had to pay around $55 for shipping. Ok, I thought, at least I'll get back a smooth working laptop again and be back in business... no so. I had the little piece of plastic that keeps the things closed break off first. Plastic. Planned obsolescence. You know, dont you, that you cant glue or repair a plastic part, not to mention plastic is cheap and prone to breakage in the first place.... Well, that was just the beginning...I had two out of four USB ports non-functional. And the mouse pad was unresponsive at times. Oh, then there was the thing about the typing. I would be breezing along and look up and my email had been sent in the middle of the message. Or it would just start typing in the middle of the text at random places. Can you hear me screaming? Drove me crazy! Oh, and then when the tech guy tried duplicating the problem typing at his snail's pace, it would, of course, behave perfectly.. Ok, so there was have three problems, and two of them got fixed. I got my laptop back after being without for over two months, and at first it worked OK..a week into it, I started getting all these error messages, failure to write or some such thing, saying probably caused by hardware failure..Well, this got worse and worse until it stopped responding altogether. It is not back at the repair facility getting a new hard drive, and oh, forgot, the port where you plug in the power supply was loose so a new whole bottom had to be ordered.. The tech guy then calls me and asks me to please sent the restore disks so he can reinstall everything on the new hard drive..Ok, so I quick put in the mail priority mail, and a week later, it is gone. No trace of it. SO I called "customer service" today, and what a nightmare. I was finally told after a half hour of repeating myself and my request over and over that another restore disc could be had for free..just had to pay the shipping of $39.00! Huh? How is that free to charge me $35.00 more than Priority mail would have cost to send it? And so my story ends... Lousy Customer service, cheaply made machine that literally, for me al least, fell apart. And did I mention one of my main reasons for selecting this model was because it had a TV built in, or so it said.. great, so I got it and then discovered it had to be hooked up by some wire acting as an antennae, I presume to another tv to work..Huh? To sum it up, it's a nice machine as long as you dont need service and as long as nothing falls off it. Good luck to those who own one. To those considering one, I would recommend ANYTHING else...

So many features!.......2007-05-03

I give this 4 stars because it has so many features! You can use it as a DVR and a TV, the integrated wireless has never given me a problem, it's fast for a laptop. It handles abuse very well, I have dropped it and stepped on it, spilled water on it. It's great if you have any kids that will mess with it.

I docked my rating a star because this laptop has no Vista upgrades. My husband upgraded us to Vista and I'm sad to say that it lost it's DVR and TV capability, and the memory card slot no longer works. And all the buttons next to the power are not working either. Still, without it's other features the laptop works great.

Although another plus is that the drive partitioned without any problems and we're also running Ubuntu on this laptop.

Great Desktop Replacement.......2006-03-25

I was in the market for a good desktop replacement, something i could use on the go but yet be able to pretty much to anything i wanted on it. Well this fit the bill perfectly, i passed up an HP which had some of the same specs, althought only 1mb L2 cache, and a regular ole ATI Radeon 200M graphics card. I wasnt impressed with the the HP's preformance at all, especially when it came to multitasking. Even though this computer was about 400 dollars of so more i said well it'll be worth it, i was indeed correct, its awesome. The screen is what i've come to expect from Toshiba(ultra crips and bright) definately the best out there, (note i have an old Toshiba with a regular LCD display and its a beaut as well). The structure is very nice, grey exterior with a very nice black (bowling ball) type gloss finish on the inside, which makes the wow effect great. The Harmon Kardon speakers are the best, never heard speakers this loud on ANY other desktop, even ones that are at a higher cost, also you can actually feel the bass while its on your lap. The media center is quite nice also, very smooth, you get a giant remote thats basically as big if not bigger than most TV remotes, which for a "notebook" seems pointless but has its perks if your lying down. The Nvidia 6600 Go FX graphics card is incredible, i really didnt think at 64mb of shared video that it would perform as well as it does. I mostly play Indiana Jones(which actually for an older game is quite demanding)and it runs smooth as silk. Also when i decide to play say Doom 3 i can actually turn the resolution up to 1024 x 768 and set the detailing on low and it runs perfectly, no jitter or jerkiness at all(how many laptops can you do that on)? especially the ones that come with the very poor Media Graphics Accelerator 900, blahh. The DVD burner is as usual very good, burns nicely although most Notebook model DVD burners burn a few minutes slower than desktops, but hey whats 11 minutes compared to 8 really? So yes this baby has it all, stylish looks, powerful Intel Centrino Pentium M Processor, running at 1.86ghz, good graphics card(better than any that come "standard" in systems these days), DVD burner, Digital Video Recording, watching and recording live tv, etc etc. So if your looking for something to replace your desktop or just add for portability than this computer is for you. I must add the computer on the left side does run a bit hot, but thats where the heat sink and fan are, so naturally with a system of this size your gonna have some heat issues, but doesnt effect the performance at all. Also this thing size wise if a beast, not as bad as the 17 inch but you'll need that size bag to carry it in, being that its about 4 inches thick. But thats a small price to pay for what this baby gives you. I'll stick with Toshiba for years to come, because from what i've experienced they are making some of the best laptops on the market right now.

Overall a very good buy, super fast and responsive.
The only bad point so far has been the brightness control always resets itself to dark and you need to manually adjust it up to the brightest setting to view properly.

I bought last years version of this computer, The Qosmio F15-AV201 in September of 2005. The main differences are mine has a 80GB hard drive, 512 MB RAM, 4 USB ports and Harmon/Kardon Speakers. This new model Qosmio F25-AV205 has a 100GB hard drive, 1024 MB RAM, 3 USB ports and upgraded Harmon/Kardon Speakers. I could not be happier with mine. The screen the best picture I've seen on a laptop. The sound is the best I've heard on a laptop. Most sound like an old transister radio. Of course you'll get better sound with external powered speakers, but just the laptop alone sounds suprizingly good. The Windows Media Center is like having a TIVO without having to pay a monthly fee and the included remote control also controls your music, photos, DVD's, video's, TV and many other features. I also use it for work as well. I have my stores Database on it and do all my work on this computer. It is my work center and Entertainment center, that goes everywhere with me. The wireless works great as well. I wrote this review because The other review that was 1 star was for a computer that is a completly different series than these are and I wanted set the record straight. The only problems I've had with this computer were when I didn't know what I was doing and Toshiba Tech Support was very helpfull and answered my questions and got me straightened out very quickly and easily. I can highly recommend this to anyone who wants all these features in 1 laptop. I'm getting ready to order this newer model now.
