I recently upgraded from another Uniden set. I love them. Remote answering machine is great. Intercom is super. Reception is good. I definitely would buy this item again. I have four phone throughout my house. It provides convenience.
One of the things different about this set versus the older version is that the battery doesn't stay charged quite as long. But, only within a few (3-5) hours fewer than the older version.
Another difference is the size. It is a little larger, but makes it SO much easier to hang on to when using the phone.
Otherwise, I couldn't say enough good things about theses phones. They are a fabulous tool for communication!

Has a lot of features. The only deficiencies are the 12 minute recording time on the answering system with the option of limiting recorded messages to either 1 minute or 4 minutes. A longer recording time and an option of 2 minutes per message would have been nice. The tone quality is a little tinny but acceptable. The message alert sound feature is nice but it would be better yet if the LCD screen lit up when messages were waiting. Overall, this is a very nice 5.8 GHz phone for the money.

I have had many cordless phones and this is by far the worst cordless phone I have ever purchased. The phone works one day and not the next. I get "OUT OR RANGE" messages with the handheld just a few feet from the receiver. Numerous other unexplanable problems. There is a number to call for customer service, the problem is that so many calls are coming in you can't get through. It appears that Uniden is another victim of "MADE IN CHINA." I can't return the phone to Amazon since returns must be made within ten days. The good news is that I didn't throw away the old system that it was supposed to replace. From now on I'm sticking with Panasonic.

Does NOT work with Uniden TRU-9466.......2007-09-10
I had to return this item because it's not compatible as an additional handset for the Uniden TRU9466 phone system.
When I purchased the Uniden TRU9466 unit, the TRU9460 came up as a "buy this unit also" choice, implying that it worked with the TRU9466. Once it arrived, I found out that the TRU9460 was a standalone unit and would NOT associate with the Uniden TRU9466 2-line system.
The good news is that Amazon refunded my money, including shipping. I was pleased with that, even though frustrated by the inconvenience of not having an additional handset.

I wanted to get a simple 5.8 cordless phone. I have a Panasonic with an answering machine & pleased with it. This Uniden was right there with the Panasonic. It was very easy to program the phone book, the handset & the ring tones. I like the back lit numbers and the amber(?) color is real easy on the eyes. I don't use it far from the base, so I find no issues with the range. I definitly recommend this for anyone who needs a phone and maybe needs to expand it later.

We bought this set off Amazon a year or more ago. I wanted a cordless set I could add as many headsets as I wanted to and this one fit the bill. I even added the waterproof phone to use for the garage and yard.
I don't have any major issues with the system.
We've used the monitoring feature on this system a lot as a baby monitor, works great because I can just stick a phone where I need it to be and monitor it from anywhere else, where most baby monitors need to be plugged in, so this works quickly and conveniently.
I am going to recommend my parents buy the two line version of this phone for their home as their system is slowly dying.

I have two complaints. First the copy phone book feature is a bit awkward and not quite what I expected. Additionally, it would have been nice to update the phone book automatically any time a given phone added an entry.
Second, though the base package I found everywhere: Sams, Best Buys, etc. etc. the individual expansion phones I could only find on Amazon. Relative to the package deal, the individual phones are priced higher than I thought they should be.
Some callers complained about range. Range of operation to me was OK. As an Engineer I somewhat understand your frustration, but range is effected by a lot of factors. If possible you could try relocating your base station.

I had read a couple of bad reviews for this phone before I bought it but they were outweighed by the good so I took the plunge. I love this phone. It is light weight and small. No problem with static or reception. It also looks great, very sleek styling. I would recommend to this to a friend.

Easy to use, lots of nice features, just wish the cordless was better .......2007-09-20
I purchased three of these for use in our office. We are required to have 2-line phones, and this seemed to have the best options as there was corded and cordless handset option. It was even better that we all got to change ringtones so that we know whose phone is ringing.
Although it took some of the people in the office to get used to them, all in all, I've had no real complaints . . . save one: Every one of our cordless handsets have horrible reception to the base. There are a lot of "pops", "scratches" and "static". Now I realize that since we are all in the same office, there is the potential for cross-reception, however most other handsets allow you to change the "channel" to find an unoccupied frequency.
We cannot seem to find the channel button or how to change this in the setup to see if it can even be done. I think we are just going to have to cut our losses, but we all seem to prefer to use the corded base. I was thinking about calling customer support, but with all the negative feedback, I don't know if it will be worth the heartache or trouble. If it gets any worse, I might have to bite the bullet.
Also, we have a lot of calls going through our office. There have been many times that we are using two lines at once. I have never had a third caller bump into one of my other calls. I have been told by other callers that the phone line simply rings as busy and they weren't able to leave a message.

The TRU9496 works quite well, just as almost all of the other TRU8 and TRU9 devices, BUT ... do NOT buy this or any other Uniden phone BEFORE talking with their Tech Support people (and I use the word "people" very lightly).
If you make the mistake - as I did - of calling their Tech Support AFTER the purchase is made, they will scold you with such phrases as, "You should have called us before you bought it." In other words, they're saying, "You should have had the clairvoyant ability to anticipate that we would do NOTHING to help you, and your purchase would be a foolish one, because YOU are the idiot for thinking we'd help you out."
These vile, inept, do-nothing excuses for humanity are rude, patronizing and outright insulting.
After the third or fourth repeating of their mantra-like disclaimer of any responsibility for your problem, they say, "This call is over," and hang up!
They do not care about you or your concerns or problems. They care only about technical "hair-splitting" that is consistent with their CYOA philosophy.
I've used and loved Uniden products, but know now that if anything goes wrong I'm on my own and might as well toss my phones in the trash and buy something else.

KEEP YOUR RECEIPT - AFTER YOU WAIT FOR 30 MIN ON HOLD FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE THEY WILL DO NOTHING FOR YOU WITHOUT YOUR RECEIPT IT IS THERE ESCAPE CLAUSE FOR THE POOR QUALITY PRODUCT THEY PUT OUT. AFTER 6 MONTHS MY EXTRA HANDSETS STARTED CLICKING AND POPPING, I CONTACTED UNIDEN AND WAS FRUSTRATED BEYOND BELIEF, LUCKILY I HAD MY RECEIPT SENT THE PHONES (0N MY DIME) TO THEM AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS THEY SEND ME TO REFERBISED FACTORY PHONES, BOTH DID NOT WORK, CALLED AGAIN THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO SEND ME TWO MORE, THEY NEVER CAME, WHEN i CALLED THEY SAID THE SECOND ORDER DID NOT HAVE A RECEIPT ATTACHED TO IT SO THEY DID NOT SEND THE PHONES, PS HAVE NOT HAD PHONES FOR OVER A MONTH AND STILL WAITING FOR THE REPLACEMENTS.

The expandable handset has too much static and poor reception (out of range) even within 5 ft of the base. This problem persisted even after all possible sources of 'interference' were disconnected or turned off. This is supposed to be a replacement for my 2.4G 2 line Vtech, which has not given me this kind of problem except that their keypads are worn after 10 years of use.
2 Line office phone with all the right stuff.......2007-09-04
I was fairly happy with my 6 year old Sony 2 line phone but it finally gave up on me. I've found the new Uniden phone to be a huge improvement over what I was used to. I have a home office and use line 2 for my business and line 1 is the main family home line. I also have a separate single-line phone/answering machine in the kitchen for the family for line 1. I need a 2-line phone so I can pick up line 1 calls when I need to without running into the kitchen. What I really like about the system is its flexibility in how you set it up for EACH line and cordless handset. Specifically, when I pick up my phone in my office, I want it to default to line 2 not line 1. It can do that. I also don't want my 2-line system to answer calls on line 1 since I have a separate answering maching for that. It can do that. I also don't want other people to hear line 1 ringing when I'm on a call. It can do that. It also has a nice Do Not Disturb feature that throws calls straight to voice mail without ringing. Of course it has all the usual features like caller ID and call waiting. It also has excellent sound quality on the answering machine, speaker phone and the handpieces. I would say the range on the cordless phone is average. My office is at one end of the house (with lots of electrical stuff in it... computers, wireless devices, etc.) and the cordless phone does great everywhere in the house except in a bathroom at the other end of the house about 80 feet away. It still works there but I can hear some clicking like it's trying to find a good channel. If maximum range is your goal, another phone might be better. For my purposes, I'm extremely happy and can recommend the phone highly.

This is a great buy! Great clarity. The features are endless. One of my favorites: Transferring a new phone book entry between the base and handset with a simple push of a button. I researched a lot of phones and this one truly lives up to the hype. Lots of thought seems to have gone into the execution of this product. A worthy consideration for those looking for a full featured, expandable, 2-line phone.
Flawed.......2007-08-15
The TRU8866 looks great on paper. Here are the critical flaws...
Flaw #1) 5.8Ghz - Bigger is not better when it comes to the frequency band. The range of these phones is poor in comparison to 2.4GHz units I've used. Can't walk outside to the mailbox without the connection becoming extremely choppy.
Flaw #2) As mentioned by others, incoming calls on the 2nd line cause an audible beep which cuts off audio on line #1. This isn't very good, especially if (for example) you use line 1 for work and line 2 for home.
Flaw #3) There is considerable crosstalk if both lines are being used. That's real bad. I tested it with some friends, the good news is that the outgoing audio doesn't get much crosstalk (so, people your calling on line 1 can't hear what is being said on line 2), BUT, YOU can hear audio on both lines. It's faint, but very annoying.
Flaw #4) After about 1 year, plan on tons of noise as the radio's in the handsets start going out of tune. The higher the frequency band, the more susceptible radio circuits are to the effects of aging. I called Uniden about 14 months after purchase because one of my units has a very bad background hum, they would not repair. The 2nd unit developed the same hum after 16 months.
Into the garbage they go.
I will say that the features of these phones is great, the mechanical quality is good, battery life is good. But, the flaws outweigh that. I think I'm sticking with Panasonic in the future.

The phone works great. I have 2 lines. A traditional land line, and a voip line. The voip line is on line1 and the traditional on line2. I've not had single problem with it. It doesn't seem to be having an adverse affect on my other wireless gadgets (router and bluetooth), which I know is concern for some people. The phone has worked out of the box perfectly since day one, but I did spend quite a bit of time narrowing it down.
The "custom banner" feature seemed needless at first, but actually turned out to be quite useful for redial purposes, when trying to determine which handset I used to make a call, or simply to return the correct handset to its place.
It's been very sturdy. I've dropped or knocked it over it countless times, and there hasn't been a scratch, crack or change in audible quality or reception.
The only cons (which some might consider a plus) that I can think of:
1) lack of automatically shared address book. Contacts I update on one handset aren't automatically updated on all handsets. The same is true for redial. although entries can be manually "pushed" to other handsets. (individually, or all at once).
2) not quite enough redial entries. only 3

I've been using this system with 10 handsets for a year now, without problems. We use many of the features: 2-line phone, caller id, phonebook, intercom. Range is reasonable over 4 levels from one end of the house to the other, with a few exceptions on the fringes.
Overall I've been VERY pleased with this system and can highly recommend it.

Great unit...very strong signal throughout 2400 sq foot house and outside, well made and easy to use. Only downside is the buttons are a bit small. If that's not an issue for you, I strongly recommend.

Don't hesitate to buy this! I've been checking the market for over 2 years to find a replacement phone system to replace my 10+ year old one. This IS the one. Every feature works well up to expectations and then some. Good range from the base. Easy to use and well engineered. A very nice addition is the water proof accessory phone that is really built tough and solid. It will give you that one phone that you can take outside and not worry about getting wet. Check it out! So far, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Great phones for a great price.......2007-07-01
These phones did everything they set out to do, and they can take a beating. Never had a problem with reception, even outside, where you're pretty far from the base. The speaker function is great. The only thing I would have liked is if the intercom feature allowed you to speak directly to the other room, rather than making the phone ring in that room, and forcing someone to actually pick up. But this is a fairly minor point, and just a personal preference.
As far as taking a beating, my 1 year old has taken care of testing it in this department, and so far so good. Handsets have been dropped, thrown, and scrapped in the ground, without any negative effects on performance.
For the price, you really can't beat it. It's my first Uniden, but I can tell you it's far better than my previous Sony and Vtech phones.

We really love this phone system as it doesn't conflict with our wireless internet service. Reception is great, no static, range is great. I've taken one of the handhelds outside, across the street, and into the neighbor's basement without any problems. However, what perplexes me is,.. after that great performance, how can I pick up the handset from the main base (and from the main base where it has been charging for two days), dial a local number, get a ring or two on the other end, then get static and a message on the handset that the handset is too far from the base when I'm no more than 18 inches from the main base!?????!!!!!!!!!!????????? I'm taking a star away for that. Oh, and it has happened a couple of times, so it is not a once in a lifetime occurance.

I just love my new Uniden Tru9485-3 phone system. It has so many features that my old system didn't have. The Do Not Disturb feature is very cool. Just press one button and all of the ringers shut off all phones. 100 name address book is nice too. Also, very nice that you only have to enter all of the names once. They can be transferred to other handsets. The fancy ring tones are pretty cool too. The only thing that I can say that I dislike is that the message indicator light on the base is not illuminated. No big deal, but my other system's was. You can check your messages from any handset. No need to go to the base unit. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase. I know you will be too.

Excellent Handset.......2007-07-24
My last 3 or 4 handsets have been Uniden. This has been over the last 5 or 6 years, because they last a long time. My TRU8866 (correct #) is so good, I got new batteries.
Ordered this unit for my buddies big house, with 5 extra handsets because it was the latest and greatest. Gotta get 5.8 these days cause that doesn't interfere with home networks.
Good set - light, good reception, nice looking, built in speaker, small base unit. Highly recommended.

GREAT PHONE + LOTS OF FEATURES!.......2007-09-15
When I first hooked up this phone I was dissappointed because it was fading out a lot. But we determined that it was our DSL filter that was causing it! When we changed the base location to a phone jack without the DSL filter it worked perfectly! The sound is perfectly clear now and the features offered on this phone are great. I can't believe all the phones on the marked that have only cordless handsets on the base and there is no keypad or speaker on them either. If a call comes in and the handset is off the base you can't answer the phone until you find the handset! Since most people nowadays hang up if you don't answer by 4 rings, that results in a lot of missed calls. (At least that seemed to be my experience). Also, it's just plain annoying when you have a base ringing and you can't do anything unless the cordless handset is right there.
Thats why it was important to me to find a 5.8 ghz phone that has a corded base unit with speaker phone. The expandability is awesome and the handsets are not expensive. I did a lot of research and tried many phones before I decided on this purchase, so I really believe this is one of the best phones and best values out there right now!

I bought the 2 line version of this phone for my office and when I saw how great they work I bought this one for my home. Kids love it (too much). The phones work well. Great range we can go outside to the park across the street from our house and still receive calls. Setup is easy. Lots of useful features. Great sound quality. One of the main reasons for buying this system was the poor sound quality of all the last 4 cordless phones I had bought and I'm very satisfied with it. Phones seem durable (kids have dropped the cordless one a few times). I recommend this system highly.

`The ease of use is what I am most pleased about. The (DND) do not disturb button is a must for me, with all those early and late night telemarketers. The buttons on the phone feels good to the touch and I highly recommend this phone as a great value for all its features.
NOT wall mountable.......2007-05-11
We purchased this phone based on it being a version of the highest rated phone by Consumer Reports and "Good Stuff-noreasonableofferrefused's" stating that it was wall mountable. The latter was entirely false. In no way is this phone wall mountable - the only disappointment. So far our cats have not bothered it but we are wondering where we will put it if they do. Otherwise this is a pretty good phone with exceptionally good sound quality. The three-star review comes because the inability to wall mount it is a major drawback.

This phone is easy to install and set up, as are the extra hand sets - I bought 3 extra - and love the ring tones. Easy but time consuming to enter numbers into the memory, but what a convenience! One minor dislike: the symbols on the answering machine buttons are not familliar - took a few days of referring to the manual to remember which was for what. Have had no problems with this system and will highly recomend.

This phone doesn't work!! .......2007-09-13
I bought this niden 2-line wireless phone system with 4 phones, and only three work at a time, the 4th won't register no matter what I do. After a few months, I'm having trouble on all handsets with the volume suddenly dropping by 50% so that I can't hear who's on the other line and have to switch handsets mid conversation.
I am now shopping for another manufacturer as this phone is too unreliable for my business.
Very decent 2-line phone.......2007-09-10
After reading mixed reviews on this phone, I decided it still had the features I needed (2-line, expandable, cordless phone) at the price I wanted. After setting it up and getting an additional handset, I can say that it works as advertised.
The working range seems fine. I haven't had any drop-out problems, but my house/home office is pretty small (around 1100 sq. feet). But I have lots of RF sources (like a WiFi router, Bluetooth, etc.), and I haven't had any interference problems.
My only disappointment was that the phone does not associate Caller ID numbers with those in the Phone Book. That seems like a no-brainer, and most of the other competing brands have this feature. Otherwise, I'm very happy with my purchase.

Works great and is full featured. Easily expandable with the fairly inexpensive Uniden TCX905 Accessory Handset and Charger (Compatible with TRU9 series, TRU8 series, CLX series, Elite series, and the UIP18 series). I've added 3 additional phones so I have one in most every room. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of an occasional echo, but that may be due to the fact I'm using it with Vonage.

In reading the previous reviews, I was concerned using the phone with two lines - I use a conventional line for incoming calls and Voice over Internet Provider (VOIP via my Cable Modem). As it turns out, there was no cause for such concern. I simply set the default line to the Line 2 (VOIP) so all outgoing calls are automatically on the cheap line. Not that it was hard to chose lines a the top left button is Line 1 and the top right is Line 2. Overall, the only complain I had was the ring volume control - three settings (loud, half loud and off) and perhaps size - the hand sets are relatively small. Luckly the different ring tones are somewhat quieter. Overall they work well. I have four hand sets and they were really easy to set-up and use. I gave the product 4 stars only because of the ringer volume control.
Interchangability limited.......2007-08-22
I have a TRU 9485, and thought I would upgrade to a two line system. Beware, because Uniden has made the handsets not interchangeable. The add-on TCX-905 is, but the handsets sold with bases are not. So your ability to expand, combine or otherwise interchange handsets has been limited by Uniden.
BTW, no where in the Uniden literature did I find notice that the handsets are not interchangeable.

More than what I was looking for!.......2007-09-01
I bought these recently, after my three year old Panasonic died. We use Vonage, and I answer customer service calls from my home, so I needed multiple handsets with good sound quality. We got so much more! We love having one on each of our floors. The base is in the basement, the third handset in the bedroom on the top floor, and there are no dead spots or sound fading, like we had with the old one. I love that the phones are intercoms--works wonderfully with my kids in the basement instead of them yelling up the stairs. I can also listen in on what they are doing, two floors up, so I know they aren't getting into trouble. The handsets are small, but fit nicely into my hand and aren't a problem. I use my headset with them for work and have had no trouble. The batteries came partly charged and charged easily, and seem to hold a charge pretty well. I also love the unique ring feature--now I know without checking caller id if its an important call (meaning a family member) or one I can get to later. Really a great phone set for the price!
Reliable.......2007-08-16
We switched to VOIP almost a year ago, and, as per the reviews we could find, this seemed like the most reliable phone system. We've had no problems so far, and the price, though not the lowest, is very reasonable.
One caveat--if there's a way to access the answering machine from any location, we haven't figured it out yet. And if not, that can be one of the next things Uniden works on.

This is the worst set of phones I ever owned. I had to ship three phones back to the warranty repair (at my cost). The phones will soon be out of warranty. I suppose that is why they give you a set of 4 phones. By the end of the year, you might have one left working. So, if you are interested in having 4 working phones, you better buy 12 of them!! Save your money. Buy Vtech instead.
Feature Rich!!.......2007-07-06
I bought this set for two friends over the holidays and they love them! I've used theirs many times and was impressed so I bought a set for myself. I have recommended it to many other friends since then. The amount of features in this set go on and on. Besides being a cordless phone it can also be used as a Room/Baby monitor as well as two-way radios away from home. You can also use the handsets as an intercom system in your home or to transfer the phone call between handsets. Most options are programable from any handset and you can listen/clear your messages from any handset. You can also copy your phonebook between handsets. And a handy little feature when you want to be left alone... one touch "Do Not Disturb" that will prevent any handset from ringing with an incoming call. This is just a few of the things that impressed me. The only thing that I noticed that may be a problem is that sometimes the caller sounds a little muffled. I'm not sure if that is a problem with this phone system or not tho.

Don't even deserve one star.......2007-09-15
I buy this phone when we were moving to a new house, so I can use extra handset upstaires. I did not try it untill after a month, when I moved to new place I tried it. But the second handset doesn't work. It rings but when you pick-up the phone you will just here horrible loud sounds. I contect the staples, but it was more then a month they said they can't do anything about that. So I contected uniden's customer service. They had a horrible customer survice. When I buy this phone I think this was a good deal, but now I tossed it just in my basement. And may be next time when I clean my basement it's going to be in trash. his phone eeven doesn't deserve 1 star,but I can't give it less then one star. If you are planning to buy phone, just spend little more money and go for panasonic. I am using one for 4 years now, and I buy another one with extra handsets from panasonic, and it's working great.

I was worried these phones might be bad because of the low price but they are great. I use them in a single level home and I've had no problems and no complaints. Considering they cost way less than similar phones I'd recommend these to anyone who doesn't need an answering machine.

I've been through more cordless phones than you could imagine from every different manufacturer, and Uniden makes the best cordless phones. I have a Uniden phone currently and just recently purchased this due to my satisfaction with my other phone. Batteries last a long time (total life span) and are very durable. Excellent system for any rooms without phone jacks as well.
