Customer Reviews:
barely usable.......2007-07-08
After a lifelong predilection for Toshiba Sattelite notebook, I decided to make the switch.
I figured for $1000, I would get enough for internet, word processing and DVD playing and do the rest on my desktop PC.
Was I ever wrong.
The internet is OK. Fonts are displayed very poorly with quite a bit of washout.
Word processing is very, very slow - frequently the displayed words lag behind my typing - very annoying.
DVD playing is good and the battery life is impressive.
You are stuck with iTunes for music, although I was able to finally find a utility to let me play music without creating a playlist and manually sorting it, but all the millions of iTune lovers will probably disagree.
THE ABSOLUTE WORST PART OF THE MACHINE IS HOW SLOW IT IS. The operating system is constantly optimizing the disc without giving that process a lower priority then anything you need to do - as a result a simple close an active window can take up to a few minutes. The machine is doing disc writes as I am typing this - why?
OVERALL IMPRESSION: reliable mac software. completely inadequate hardware.
MY RECOMMENDATION: avoid this one like the plague and spend money on a much more expensive Mac notebook. Me, I am going back to Toshiba as soon as my iBook dies or gets thrown out of my window on 23rd floor.
very satisfied.......2007-05-15
I've been looking to buy an ibook for a while now. It far exceeds my Dell notebook capabilities in sounds and graphics. Garageband was one of the main reasons for switching to a Mac platform. It has given me a new world of possibilities for composing and recording adventures. The product was carefully sent in a safe and timely fashion. Thanks!
My favorite notebook........2006-12-27
I've owned many Macs, starting with an 040 Performa, and purchased even more when I taught high school journalism classes. Through the use and abuse of students and my own children, I have learned just how durable Mac hardware and software is, in comparison with products in the PC world. During many years of teaching, I had one visit from the IT dude, while my PC using colleagues vied for his services.
The G4 iBook replaced a Ti Powerbook with one of the notorious broken hinges, and I was unhappy with the Powerbook, because it had not been as reliable as my other Macs. However, my iBook has proven very reliable. The operating system (OS 10.3.9) has been seldom crashed, and the case seems really tough. I have enjoyed the built in Airport and Superdrive, and the iLife software included makes photography and video editing easy. Indeed, the only real problem has been the letters wearing off of the keyboard. Apple replaced the first one under the extended warranty (which is a good idea for a traveling notebook) and I will need another one soon. Most people don't type as much as I do, but as a writer, I really pound the keyboard, so five of my letters are no longer legible.
All in all, this has been my favorite Mac, because it travels with me everywhere I go, and it has been very reliable. I hope all of the newer Macs are just as good as this one!
Converted and Pleased.......2006-12-08
The Apple iBook G4 is possibly the best all-around laptop yet made. This would explain its extremely long lifespan as the entry-level portable Mac. The 1.42 GHz model with Superdrive was my first Mac and laptop, and is the machine on which this review is being written. Needless to say, I have enjoyed owning it, and will be upset to part with it in favour of a MacBook when the time comes.
Fragile - both the case and the service.......2006-12-07
I use a variety of notebooks. The iBook I owned had a very flimsy LCD screen. You can see this if you press on the case on the other side of the screen: the slightest pressure immediately distorts the screen. I don't see this effect on the Lenovo or Dell notebooks I use.
Not surprisingly, the iBook screen was damaged (hairline "cracks" in the LCD screen) in less than 6 months. I don't know how this came about but I know the case was intact so I didn't drop the machine or drop anything heavy on the case.
I purchased the Macintosh with a three year "AppleCare" warranty (at a very steep cost). Despite this, all Apple would offer me as a repair option was to replace the screen for $800. The new iBook was about $900.
So, caveat emptor. The recent Wall Street Journal article on fragile iPod screens prompted me to write this. Seems that Apple continues to prefer style over substance.

Customer Reviews:
Solid unit, would like to see macro functionality........2006-02-20
I've had this for three years now and have a lot of respect for the solid design and overall versatility of the unit.
I have also had to return the unit for service, due to a power hit - no fault of the Niles, I wish to make clear. I have comments on this too.
First, dislikes:
--No macro capability (well primitive). I would like to be able to pre-define a key on the touchpad, or use a shift-key function to trigger multiple events. Essentially, I need multiple macros on one source. Each macro can have as many as 12 steps. I solved this limitation by using a programmable remote that holds the key sequences. Be aware I am doing lots of programming of groups with a CD Jukebox. Using the jukebox remote is a nine step keysequence, so this is far more than just hitting play.
--One of the inputs is hardwired to be built in AM/FM tuner. I wish I could have the option to make it a switchable external input.
No optical input. In fairness, we are not doing audiophile quality here, just music thru the whole house; not that important IMO.
--Have to pick the devices you hook up to it carefully and do lots of planning. Not Niles fault here, it's the lack of standardazation in the whole AV community. There's a bunch of device codes out there and different IR signalling protocols. It makes every device a custom job and seriously hinders widespread acceptance of whole home audio IMO. I recommend using a pro installer unless you are a serious geek like me. This also means additional costs if you want to upgrade components that feed it periodically. True of all of them, I think.
Likes:
--Build/sound quality I compared to Russsound and several others, and found the engineering IMO to be overall superior. Component quality was very good and the flexibility of the unit was great. Pre-outs for several rooms as will as the ability to combine speakers from several rooms into one zone. Layout on the back has lots of options and well designed. Speaker clips are great.
--IR quality-Best darn IR transmitters/receivers I've ever seen. I have a CI solor IR behind a bunch of books and the thing still works. ANother is the MS-100 in ceiling. I can aim the remote any direction and it works. Apparently plasma TV's cause IR interference and this has the ability to avoid that as well as other forms of interference. These devices are nothing short of amazing. You should consider their IR devices if you are looking to relay IR around your home. They may seem expensive, but they work.
--Support, short hold times, toll free number. Friendly supportive tech folks who know their stuff and happy to help. What's not to love here?
Service-As mentioned before I had a power hit and it killed it along whit a bunch of other stuff. I sent it in, even though out-of-warranty and was bracing myself for a large repair bill, considering the initial cost of the unit. It was under $100. Delighted, shocked amazed... this is really one of the few companies whose support is as good as the product.
"Curb appeal"--CI solo looks good installed in the wall, the Gloria looks/feels well designed.
Versatility of inputs/outputs-- ANyting with an RCA jack is a source. Pre-outs for the study or other rooms where you want supplemental "kick".
Their stuff is not the cheapest, but it is well engineered and designed to years of use, not just until the warranty runs out. They've earned my loyalty.

Customer Reviews:
Work great, just don't get them wet!!!.......2002-05-21
We bought these so we could keep in contact with our kids at the greenbelt just down the street from our house. They worked great and the sound quality was good. Our only problem was my kids were there when the sprinklers came on, so they were playing in them. You guessed it, the unit was pretty soaked, so we let it dry out but it still doesn't work. The next pair I look for will be water resistant.
good radios but poor LCD quality control.......2002-03-27
I had to return a set because one radio display was bad. The replacement set has one radio that doesn't display the transmit and receive signal indicators. I kept this pair because of the range and price but quality control of the display could be better.
say no to motorola and yes to kenwood!!!!!.......2001-12-27
therese are the best and their cost effective in the frs two mile range these are number one avoid others it will take two weeks to learn to use them!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Product........2001-12-09
This is a very good product, but not a cool design. This is my opinion though. If you like yellow then this is the product for you! The range is good, the quality is good, but the style is not for me. Maybe for you but not for me.

The crossover network is constructed using premium components including Monster Cable Bandwidth Balanced wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and an air-core inductor all mounted on a high-quality fiberglass epoxy board. This combination ensures signal purity and proper driver integration. Amazon.com Product Description
The Klipsch RS-35 surround speaker employ more compact-sized horns, enabling a reduction in cabinet width. It uses Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST), which offers both rich, immersion surround sound and precise localization of individual effects from a speaker that has much more placement flexibility than conventional designs. Careful alignment of two controlled-directivity Tractrix horn tweeters, angled opposite one another on the cabinet flanking a central woofer, yields a 180-degree dispersion pattern, delivering a smooth, broad distribution of sound ideal for every surround-sound format and for music as well as movies.
Low frequencies are reproduced by a 6.5-inch cast-frame, cerametallic cone woofer. Flanking the woofer are twin 1-inch titanium dome compression driver tweeters with 4-inch square 90 x 60-degree Tractrix horns. By placing these horns at 90 degrees to one another, the WDST design yields a seamless, 180-degree coverage pattern for optimal surround performance. A side port further enhances the speaker's bass output, for a full-range surround-channel experience.
The crossover network is constructed using premium components including top-of-the-line internal wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and an air-core inductor all mounted on a high-quality fiberglass epoxy board. This combination ensures signal purity and proper driver integration. The RS-35 has a back-panel keyhole for flush mounting to walls and a threaded insert for attachment to popular adjustable wall and ceiling brackets.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Klipsch surround.......2006-12-07
Out of production, but in late 2006 can still be found new online. 96db efficiency, clean horn design, this was an upgraded version of the acclaimed RS-3 II.
Looks like this is the last of the line, as Klipsch only makes one triangular Reference surround model anymore (RS-10)whose specs (91db) aren't even close to the RS-35. Clean dynamic, and well built.
Verdict: hard to beat performance, price, and pedigree.
