Customer Reviews:
Power for the Powerbook.......2007-05-11
If you either need more power than one battery can provide, or you've found that the original battery for your powerbook isn't holding enough of a charge anymore, this is the officially branded replacement.
If you need to look up the details on your current battery before you decide, then click on the apple, select "about this mac" and then hit the "more info" button. Your battery's data is in the hardware section under power with the heading "Battery Information".
Apple Inc. provides a lot of information on the proper care of your batteries on their website. The basics are that if you're not planning to run your powerbook off of its battery for a while, you can store it (preferably at about 40% power) in a cold place to extend its lifespan. Additionally, about once every 30 times you use up the full charge of the battery and then recharge it (that's a total of 30 even if you do it in smaller increments, if you used up half of the battery each day it'd take 60 days, etc) you should keep it on battery power completely until it runs down to nothing and let it go to sleep due to lack of power before charging back up. This is just to give the battery an occasional chance to check on what its current maximum charge is, so that the time/percentage reported by OS X can remain accurate.
Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Apple screws me for first and last time.......2005-08-02
Well, I got the laptop on time from Amazon. Good job by them.
Ok, now to Apple. It's not even 1 month after I bought the thing and they upgraded it. That's lousy. I heard that upgrading a computer and selling it for the same price without warning is a constant "feature" of Macintosh computers. But..less than a month of use and already there is a memory, wireless, and video upgrade? That just plain sucks. How about charging more for more? Hello-If you like losing customers...Just keep up your current practices. I changed my mind from buying a PC for this Mac ...but I'll never do that again. Back to PC's for me. Great policy Apple!!
This is cool get it!!.......2005-06-11
This iBook is the best computer i have ever used. The os is great Much beter than xp. My dad gave me two getting an c- on the ITBS. Apple's great macintel !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shiny Apple.......2005-06-06
Elegant. That's the word I've used to describe this laptop since buying it. You can put Jane Hathaway in a ball gown, but she's still homely. This thing is more like Jackie Kennedy. It's got the ball gown, but it also speaks French and doesn't snort at dinner parties.
I've read quite a few of the reviews for the iBook 14". I, like many reviewers, I am a new convert to Apple. I used the old (first generation?) Macs in college in the mid-80's, and loved them then. PCs were just bulkier, uglier, and tougher to navigate. PCs have obviously come a long way, and so have Apples.
I bought my iBook at CompUSA, which had an 18 month no interest promotion on all computers, which got my attention. I'm not a huge nerd, but I do spend a lot of time online and do a lot of digital photography. I also am president of my homeowner association, so I do quite a bit of writing--meeting minutes, newsletters, etc. I talked with the nerds (IT guys) at work, telling them that I was about to buy a laptop. We use Dell at work, and I found a great deal on a Dell at Costco.com. I showed them the deal, and they agreed it was a good price, but I might need a few upgrades. Several of these IT guys mentioned an Apple as a choice. I didn't feel like learning a new operating system, so I actually placed the order for the Dell.
Believe it or not (and I hope this doesn't turn too many people off), it was Rush Limbaugh who made the best arguments for Apple for me. He was talking to a listener who had called him asking which computer would be best for his daughter who was entering graduate school. Rush (a technophile) suggested the PowerBook and went down a laundry list of reasons to choose Apple over PC. At the top of the list (like many of the lists here) is the fact that there are virtually no virus issues with Macs. I turned the car around and went to CompUSA to check out the (small and somewhat neglected) Mac department. I cancelled my order for the Dell and bought my friendly little iBook.
There's no vert like a convert, and I'm convinced. I've always thought Apple people were just a little too fanatic. Now I see why. Frankly, I wish Apple would just offer a serious money back guarantee. I'm convinced that once most people get one of these things home and find out that there's NOT much of a learning curve, and the lack of heat, exceptional speed (I did upgrade to 768 MB RAM), and available MS Office for Mac, they'd forget all about getting their money back and decide they got a realy good deal.
5 Stars, but this iBook Wants More Ram.......2005-04-11
I have a friend of a friend who works at an Apple store and just recenlty he let me play with all the new stuff, some old stuff too and here is my impression of the new, improved 14 inch iBook. First off, and I feel like shouting this, but I won't, how come Apple is still putting out iBooks without enough ram to run them properly? After all these years of releasing underpowered machines, they finally came 'round right with the PowerBooks by bumping up the ram to 512 megs instead of the lousy 256 they're pushing the iBooks out the door with. So add another 75 bucks to the price. Which is still a pretty good deal, considering now that Apple has built in Airport Extreme. This machine comes with the combo drive and unless you need to record video it'll do you fine and you'll save a couple hundred bucks to boot over the model with the Superdrive.
This G4 is way speedier than the old iBook 700 I'm still using. That old G3 processor just does not measure up to the G4. However the screen seems brighter and crisper.
I'd just love to give this computer a five star rating, but shame on you Apple for not bumping up the ram. You have made a darn fine machine, otherwise, and the ram required to run System X right would have made it just about perfect.

Don't make the mistake of the masses, switch to a Mac.......2005-03-26
After all of my life using Windows software, Windows-based OS, systems built for the flawed programs and having my computers overtaken with spyware, bugs, worms, viruses, adware etc... I did about a years worth of on-line research and took the plunge into buying a laptop that only 5% of the population acknowledges. I am thoroughly impressed and surprized at how happy this computer has made my computing needs enjoyable.
First off, as other readers have said 1.33 GHz vs. 2.whatever processer speeds don't really mean a whole lot. (compared it to friends 2.4GHz and my ibook was faster) So, don't let these well publicized numbers sway you
Second, NO VIRUSES! Let me say that again...NO VIRUSES! The platform apple uses for their OS is rock solid. Most Mac users use no anti-virus, spyware, adware etc. programs because there is not (to my knowledge) a way to infiltrate the system. NO VIRUS CONCERNS!!!
Third. The programs in the mac are so intuitive...The computer was built by Apple, the programs were built by Apple...so everything is where it should be. It is easy to find everything you want and nothing you don't. This part is hard to put into words. Basically, if you need a file you can find it, easy.
Fourth. Other computers may look initially enticing by their low prices...but buyer beware...don't compare apples to oranges. The only two purchases/upgrade I think are essential are to max out RAM (which should be done by yourself to save big $$$, which doesn't void your warrantee (apple actually gives you directions to do so and it's very easy)) and to buy Microsoft Office if you must comply with most who use Microsoft for easy cross communication between platforms.
I will NEVER buy another computer system which solely operates on Microsoft products, with viruses, files scattered throughout, crashing, etc...I wouldn't even consider it.
Do your research, talk to some apple owners, you won't miss you're PC for a minute once you have that beautiful mac in your possession.
So many other reasons to switch...once you own a Mac, you'll never go back.

Customer Reviews:
barely usable.......2007-07-08
After a lifelong predilection for Toshiba Sattelite notebook, I decided to make the switch.
I figured for $1000, I would get enough for internet, word processing and DVD playing and do the rest on my desktop PC.
Was I ever wrong.
The internet is OK. Fonts are displayed very poorly with quite a bit of washout.
Word processing is very, very slow - frequently the displayed words lag behind my typing - very annoying.
DVD playing is good and the battery life is impressive.
You are stuck with iTunes for music, although I was able to finally find a utility to let me play music without creating a playlist and manually sorting it, but all the millions of iTune lovers will probably disagree.
THE ABSOLUTE WORST PART OF THE MACHINE IS HOW SLOW IT IS. The operating system is constantly optimizing the disc without giving that process a lower priority then anything you need to do - as a result a simple close an active window can take up to a few minutes. The machine is doing disc writes as I am typing this - why?
OVERALL IMPRESSION: reliable mac software. completely inadequate hardware.
MY RECOMMENDATION: avoid this one like the plague and spend money on a much more expensive Mac notebook. Me, I am going back to Toshiba as soon as my iBook dies or gets thrown out of my window on 23rd floor.
very satisfied.......2007-05-15
I've been looking to buy an ibook for a while now. It far exceeds my Dell notebook capabilities in sounds and graphics. Garageband was one of the main reasons for switching to a Mac platform. It has given me a new world of possibilities for composing and recording adventures. The product was carefully sent in a safe and timely fashion. Thanks!
My favorite notebook........2006-12-27
I've owned many Macs, starting with an 040 Performa, and purchased even more when I taught high school journalism classes. Through the use and abuse of students and my own children, I have learned just how durable Mac hardware and software is, in comparison with products in the PC world. During many years of teaching, I had one visit from the IT dude, while my PC using colleagues vied for his services.
The G4 iBook replaced a Ti Powerbook with one of the notorious broken hinges, and I was unhappy with the Powerbook, because it had not been as reliable as my other Macs. However, my iBook has proven very reliable. The operating system (OS 10.3.9) has been seldom crashed, and the case seems really tough. I have enjoyed the built in Airport and Superdrive, and the iLife software included makes photography and video editing easy. Indeed, the only real problem has been the letters wearing off of the keyboard. Apple replaced the first one under the extended warranty (which is a good idea for a traveling notebook) and I will need another one soon. Most people don't type as much as I do, but as a writer, I really pound the keyboard, so five of my letters are no longer legible.
All in all, this has been my favorite Mac, because it travels with me everywhere I go, and it has been very reliable. I hope all of the newer Macs are just as good as this one!
Converted and Pleased.......2006-12-08
The Apple iBook G4 is possibly the best all-around laptop yet made. This would explain its extremely long lifespan as the entry-level portable Mac. The 1.42 GHz model with Superdrive was my first Mac and laptop, and is the machine on which this review is being written. Needless to say, I have enjoyed owning it, and will be upset to part with it in favour of a MacBook when the time comes.
Fragile - both the case and the service.......2006-12-07
I use a variety of notebooks. The iBook I owned had a very flimsy LCD screen. You can see this if you press on the case on the other side of the screen: the slightest pressure immediately distorts the screen. I don't see this effect on the Lenovo or Dell notebooks I use.
Not surprisingly, the iBook screen was damaged (hairline "cracks" in the LCD screen) in less than 6 months. I don't know how this came about but I know the case was intact so I didn't drop the machine or drop anything heavy on the case.
I purchased the Macintosh with a three year "AppleCare" warranty (at a very steep cost). Despite this, all Apple would offer me as a repair option was to replace the screen for $800. The new iBook was about $900.
So, caveat emptor. The recent Wall Street Journal article on fragile iPod screens prompted me to write this. Seems that Apple continues to prefer style over substance.

Customer Reviews:
Extremely Quiet, Thank Goodness.......2005-10-08
My main concern (and something which held me back from buying a Microdrive for years) was noise, considering that this is an actual miniature hard drive. It was extremely difficult to find real user information regarding noise on this. I hate hard drive noise, and for cameras with sound/video recorders on them, especially ones with good microphones, having componentry with moving parts could be a dealbreaker. I finally chanced it and wish I had done so long ago. The drive is extremely quiet in its standard spin noise. Standard spin noise is almost inaudible; I have to hold the camera up to my ear to hear it. It does not show up in my audio camera audio recordings. Head access and drive spinup is more audible, but still does not seem to create a problem (and I am a stickler for noise). It's almost comical to hear the drive spinup and head access noise, because it sounds exactly like a hard drive--much quieter, of course.
The drive gets quite hot on continuous use. Solid state can get hot, too. The drive cannot be used at elevations above 5,000 ft or the heads will crash. It is Type II CF (slightly thicker than Type I) and not as many devices take Type II. Having a small hard drive uses battery somewhat faster but it hasn't been a drag.
Heads auto-park when drive is not actively accessing. Drive is reputed to be MUCH more delicate than solid state CF. I don't know why the drive should be so fragile in its parked state, and don't worry about that much, but what I do worry about is something happening while the heads are actually accessing. I basically baby it and am extremely careful with it, especially when the camera is on. Even beforehand, though, I got in the habit of putting the camera's wrist strap around my wrist in case I dropped it or something happened. This could save not only your camera, but your expensive microdrive.
Microdrives were about half the cost of solid state CF. But recently, I've seen cheap (slow) CF memory on sale matching Microdrive price per megabyte. Good quality (fast, i.e. Lexar's high speed stuff) CF media is slowly closing the gap but still almost double the price per megabyte, unfortunately.
Although Microdrives are technically slower than the many of the quicker CF cards, they have a small (128K) buffer which can help with CF bottlenecks. I bought a Sandisk Ultra II CF card for 640x480/30 frames per second movies on my digital camera, and the Sandisk couldn't even get past 1 minute due to some bottleneck on my card. I should've gone with Lexar as I only later learned that Write Acceleration Technology was proprietary to Lexar (camera must be compatible with it, and mine was--I just thought it was a camera thing, not a media thing).
If you don't go with a Microdrive, or if you have the money to do so, I suggest Lexar Media's later high speed CF offerings.
I've also stopped pushing Seagate's ST1 (Microdrive equivalent) because they have disrespected their loyal customer base by making exclusive/full production contracts with OEM's for YEARS and not even releasing a few ST1's retail to the public, all the while telling customers who put off buying Hitachi Microdrives for literally years (like me) to keep waiting, giving them fake hopeful estimated release dates, only to never release the product and never contact the customer, and only to say "Oh yeah--we pushed the release date back again--now we're hoping next year at the earliest". OEM ST1's pulled from devices and sold on Ebay generally won't work because they are not fully CF compatible, meaning they will probably work in most card readers, but probably will not work in most cameras etc. This is intentional. Only the "Retail" drives will work in most devices (cameras, etc). OEM drives typically work on just ATA/IDE standards and do not respond to the full CompactFlash specification/command set. That goes for Hitachi Microdrives, too. Only buy from reputable sources like directly from Amazon (which also have generous return policies) where you know you're getting a retail and not OEM drive.
As a final note, Secure Digital (SD) memory does not seem to have the architectural bottlenecks inherent in CF cards & devices, and price/MB rates have tumbled shockingly (about half the price of CF media now?!). SD is MUCH smaller and the carrying cases are normally just retrofitted CF cases, but it emables the camera to be smaller. Available capacities are not as high as with CompactFlash, but 1 & 2 GB SD cards are now becoming common. So you may want to take that into account when considering your next camera.
Hitachi Microdrive 2GB, nice till it runs!!!!.......2005-05-30
I bought one of these last October 2004 in a package with my Nikon D-70... Perfect 'till a couple of days ago when the Camera said Error and the card reader goes crazy with lots of "clipping" sound and no info, no remouvable media.
So.... that my rate... Now you know why this company sells for less.
Super fast and affordable.......2005-05-23
i just got one of these for my Nikon D70. It costs the same as a one gigabyte compact flash card. It doesn't have quite as fast of a write speed but it does fine for the 3 pictures per second on the nikon d70.
